1 ANNOUNCEMENTS: Sunday, August 25, 1985 GREETING / VISITORS We're always delighted to welcome visitors to our services, and an invitation to worship with us again to find a Church home here with us is warmly and openly extended. Visiting friends are invited to share in the moments of warmth that we have every Sunday following the service downstairs in the Russell Room where some punch and cookies will be available. We invite you to sign a visitor card or to leave your name in one of the Guest Books as you depart. Be free in the sharing of your name and city address. You worship in a Church whose roots are deep in the soil of this part of NYC, a Church that has been serving the people of this neighborhood since 1837, a Church that ministers in the name of Christ we have been doing so for close to 150 years. It is in the name of Christ - in His loving spirit - that we bid you welcome on this Summer Sunday morning. REMEMBER IN PRAYER It is our custom to "lift-up" in prayer those who are ill, hospitalized, or shut-in at home. We invite you to remember in your prayers: John Risley Matilda Bernard Phyllis Darby Ellen Nicholson Gus Poulos Ada Kinney TODAY'S MUSIC We Ttrelcome Michael D. Reed to the organ console this morning in the absence of Lyndon Woodside, and also welcome Alphie Thorn as soloist for our service this morning. We're grateful to you Alphie for sharing your voice and blessing us this morning. And Michael - I understand this is your last Sunday with us and we pause to say how good it 1 s been to have you back with us again this Summer. You lift our Summer services and we are grateful. 11 A WORD IN EDGEWAYS" Work begins tomorrow on the September issue of our parish news sheet so share your notices and any person concerns you might have with Lucy Dinnes, our Co-Editor. Pass them on to her at the coffee hour, or put them in the Poor Box downstairs. NEXT SUNDAY Next Sunday is Labor Day Sunday and we shall welcome the Reverend Thomas Falshaw to lead us in the service as well as to administer the Sacrament of Holy Communion. I'm essentially back from my vacation and my Summer travels and plan to return to the pulpit two weeks from today, September 8th. Last Sunday, as some of you know, I was upstate in Clinton, New York and co-
2 officiated at the lovely wedding of Kristi Heintz and Kenneth Barclay. They were married on Saturday afternoon in the Hamilton College Chapel in Clinton, New York. TODAY This morning we are welcoming Thea Crites to our pulpit. As it says in your bulletin, Thea is a native of Connecticut, a graduate of Oberlin College, and is entering her third year of seminary at UTS here in the city. She also attended Law School in Brooklyn for two years prior to her entrance into the seminary. Thea is prearing for the Christian ministry. A member of our Church, she is looking to ordination in the United Methodist Church and hopes to serve as a Christian psycho~therapist. I've invited Joyce Gartrell, chairperson of our Pastor Parish Relations Committee to share with you a few words about the procedure into the ministry that one follows. And I think this will be helpful to you as we give Thea our support for this important step. Present to you Joyce Gartrell, a Trustee of our Church and Chairperson of our Pastor Parish Relations Committee. OFFERING Pope John, when he came to NYC a few years ago, said, "Show us how to give of our substance and not just of our abundance." Our Lord, Jesus Christ, said, 'It is more blessed to give than to reseive'. In this spirit, let us worship God with our morning offering.
3 J>ASTORAL PRAYER: August 25, LORD, YOU knmf the secrets of our hearts our innermost longings The concerns we carry around within us. The doubts that so often surface in our. minds. The guilt \ve cover up i'li th our good ltorks. The hurts that we harbor in our hearts~ The resentments buried in our souls. OH HOW WE NEED TO OPEN ourselves up to YOU, LORD GOD AND FATtiER OF US ALL To fully ea~erience YOUR love, to k~ow YOUR forgiveness. To confess who "re are., uwhat \ore are how often "m stumble and fall and fail oand fear. To feel YOUR nearness, YOUR peace ru1d power and presence. SOl'1E OF US ARE seated by our families. We ca:re about our wives, our husbands, our children. \ve ce,re about our mothers and fathers and all within the family circle. There have been times when we have failed those whom we love the most, times when we have been impatient. We ask for forgiveness. ALL OF US ARE seated now within the larger "extended" family of this parish. Again we would affirm that t-re are brothers and sisters 11 in Christ" ee. that our lives are linked togethere Help us to live as relatives in the faithuoin trust and warming, lifting friendship. Help us to share each other 1 s burdens, to share also each other's joy and sorrow., \ve pray especially for those in our church family who are hurting..,for those who this month celebrate a birthday, or an anniversary. Their names are known to YOU. SEND US FORTH from this sanctuary this day t-rith a new sense of joy and hope, and with a deepened commitment to Christ. Help us to get "outside" of ourselves., Turn us away from always taking our "emotional temperature" to find new and exciting ways of living "for others".. lord JESUS, HEAR OUR PRAYERS. How often we have called YOU and spoken of YOU as the "man for others". In our hearts, we know this is the way all of us should try to travel.uhelping others reaching out.,to strangers as well as friends, not only on an August Sunday, but throughout the days of each week in the coming months. Hake us deeply sensitive to YOUR spirit. All of this in the name of Christ, our Lord.
4 INTRODUCTION Let us enter into a time of silent meditation a time _in which we prepare ourselves expectantly that the Spirit of the Living God may be made real to us in this hour of worship. In silence, let each nat-r pray as the heart may prompt. MED I';' ATI ON "For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His steadfast love tow ard those who:-fear Him.. As far as the Ea<:1t is from the vlest, so far does He remove our transgressions from us." "In the name cd Jesus Christ, I share with you the Good News: t~e are.forgiven!" t lait on t~e Lord.
