1 by Erica Dalton The Walter Gilbert Award is given annually at a home football game to one of Auburn s prominent and distinguished athletic alumni which recognizes Auburn athletes who have distinguished themselves through achievements after graduation. Only varsity athletes who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen field by 20 or more years of superior performance will be eligible for the Walter Gilbert Award. This award is an opportunity to show what was learned at Auburn and how it has carried over into their professional careers. Auburn began giving out the Walter Gilbert Award in It is named after Auburn s only three-time All-American, who played center on the football team from A member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 1956, he is part of 11 total Auburn players and coaches to receive this honor. D. Gaines Lanier (#98) lettered at defensive tackle from while playing for legendary Coach Ralph Shug Jordan. After graduation Gilbert became the Vice President for Texaco s European Oil Operations. He resided in Auburn until his death in The 27th recipient of the 2007 Walter Gilbert Award is D. Gaines Lanier. Lanier, a native of Lanett, Ala., earned a football scholarship to Auburn in 1970 and lettered at defensive tackle from , while playing for legendary Coach Ralph Shug Jordan. He graduated from Auburn in 1974 with a bachelor of science in business administration. While playing football at Auburn, Lanier encountered some of the greatest influences in his life. He had a profound respect for his coaches such as Jordan and position coach, Joe Connally. Lanier had a great respect for Jordan not only as a football coach, but more so as a man. Coach Jordan, in my mind, was one of the greatest men that there ever has been, Lanier said. I m not talking about as a coach; I m talking about the character of the man. It would continue to show in later years just how much Auburn and football taught him. For Lanier, football was about working hard and not just being average, but striving to be better than the rest in order to get ahead. He maintained the same philosophy in his business. In the insurance world, we grow by either new clients or new businesses being formed, Lanier said. After graduation, Lanier s career started at Continental Insurance Company where he stayed until he joined his family s business in J. Smith Lanier & Co., which is now 139 years old, had gone through four previous generations before Lanier took over. In just 10 short years, Lanier was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer. In 1999, Lanier became President and CEO of the entire company. The most recent change came in 2005 when Lanier was promoted to Chairman and CEO. While leading the company, Lanier has grown it from a small local insurance agency into the 27th largest insurance brokerage and the 10th largest privately-owned broker in the United States. Lanier takes tremendous pride in the business that he has been part of growing. He makes it clear however, that everyone made it happen. We and I mean WE not me, have built a great insurance brokerage business, Lanier said. Lanier still strives to keep the same values that the family business was founded on in We ve been able to keep the culture, integrity and character of our business through all those generations, Lanier said. I am nothing more than a steward of my era. The list of things Lanier has done for the company is extensive. He takes pride in the D. Gaines Lanier fact that with each generation of the family, the business has grown to a new level. To be able to head this business that four generations before me have led, and each generation has taken it to a new level is probably what I am most proud about, Lanier stressed. In addition to forming this multi-million dollar business, Lanier has had many achievements and significant milestones throughout his career. Lanier s career has also included an impressive record of service. He has served as a member of various business and civic organizations and boards, including the Auburn University College of Business Advisory Board and the Board of Trustees for the Chattahoochee Valley Educational Foundation. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation and most recently, the Auburn University Board of Trustees. Aside from his large list of career achievements, Lanier takes significant pride in the Walter Gilbert Award. Coming as a surprise, Lanier truly realizes the Gilbert Award as a great honor. When he (Jay Jacobs, Auburn Athletics Director) called and told me this, it came to me not only as a surprise, but this recognition really made my heart pump, Lanier said. Lanier is the father of two daughters, Ashley and Lindsey, both Auburn graduates. He and his wife, Sonia, are members of Lanett s Springroad Christian Church Auburn Football 61

2 by Jessi Beshears Former New York Yankee Hall of Famer, Lou Gehrig and former Auburn defensive back, Lee Carpenter both are quoted as saying, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. Lee Carpenter was diagnosed in 1986 with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig s disease. Despite his 21- year battle with ALS, Carpenter is still able to fill people s hearts with hope and joy. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and gradually paralyzes the entire body. Even though Carpenter has battled the disease for 21 years (far longer than the average life expectancy of 3-5 years), his brain function is good and he can still see and hear. Carpenter was put on a ventilator in 1990, and his eyes are the only muscle he is able to control. Even with this obstacle in his life, Carpenter has accomplished so much. With today s technology and his ability to blink, he was able to earn a second master s degree online in Criminal Justice from Troy University five years ago. For the past three years, he has taught online courses at Central Alabama Community College. Carpenter was born in Ashland, and moved to Childersburg when he was 6 years old. He came to Auburn on a football scholarship in 1970 and lettered in 1972 and He played in the 1972 Iron Bowl Punt Bama Punt game. But beyond the game of football, he has been a great friend to many people. You have shining examples, a city on a hill so to speak, says former Auburn Athletics Director David Housel. Some of them are great leaders in politics and religion. Some of them are great leaders in pro football, but if you look at the way a man has lived his life, if you look at someone who is a profile in courage, dignity and respect, I think you have to start with Lee Carpenter. Carpenter played under coach Ralph Shug Jordan. Coach Jordan always talked about learning things that go beyond the playing field. Carpenter certainly learned things like effort and determination that have helped him throughout his difficult time. For someone to endure what Lee has endured, you know he has to be a fighter, said Housel. Carpenter wasn t the greatest football player, but he made the most of the talent he had. He learned to fight with everything he had and that has helped him defeat the odds by surviving the disease far longer than normal. Life didn t hand Carpenter the best hand of cards, but he hasn t seeked pity from anyone. His friends say that he has always stood for something, and they will do anything to help him and his family. The Auburn Football Letterman s Club (AFLC) celebrated its 25th anniversary this past August and incorporated a fundraiser to help Lee and his family. I think the way his teammates have responded to him, the way the Auburn Football Letterman s Club has responded to him, says more than anything else that could be said, says Housel, He is one of their own and they are standing by him and helping him. No matter how people remember Carpenter, his son Andy says, He s just dad to us, and Granddaddy to his six grandkids. We are pretty lucky to have him. Carpenter has been quoted saying, I believe God has a purpose in this for me. I don t think this is a miracle. I think this is the purpose of my life. It s not that I don t believe in miracles. I think this is my way to bring out the good in other people. Carpenter s optimistic attitude is not a showy, put-on for the press, says Housel, He is genuinely positive, genuinely optimistic. He has plenty of reasons to just moan about what he s been through, but he chooses to be optimistic, he chooses to be positive. A wise man once said, Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Carpenter has gone through and is going through pain, but he has chosen not to suffer and that is something that every one of all ages can learn from Auburn Football

7 With its reputation cemented as A Great American Public University, the University of Mississippi is building momentum to continue its leadership in education, research and service through the 21st century. Since Robert C. Khayat took over as the University s 15th chancellor July 1, 1995, enrollment has increased 41 percent, research funding has doubled and private gifts have soared. UM enrolled more than 14,000 students last fall in Oxford and a total of 17,326 students on all four of its campuses: Oxford, Southaven, Tupelo and the Medical Center in Jackson. Minority enrollment is 19 percent, and African-American enrollment is 14 percent. Ole Miss is a doctoral degree-granting university with nine academic divisions on the Oxford and Jackson campuses. Its research enterprise including programs in acoustics, atmospheric physics, remote sensing, Southern studies, space law and pharmaceutical sciences are renowned internationally. External funding for research, service and education projects on Oxford and Jackson campuses was $128 million last year. Helping to attract the region s finest young scholars are outstanding new programs, such as the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Croft Institute for International Studies and Lott Leadership Institute. With 2,369 full-time employees on the Oxford campus, including 697 full-time faculty, Ole Miss is the largest employer in Lafayette County. More than 83 percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. The student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1. The Oxford campus has been dramatically improved with more than $285 million in new or renovated facilities. The latest to be completed include Bryant Hall, Deupree Hall, the FedEx Athletics Academic Support Center and Nutt Auditorium at Scruggs Hall. Renovations should be completed soon at Bishop, Farley and Meek halls, and major expansions are under way at the Inn at Ole Miss, Thad Cochran Research Center and Oxford-University Stadium. Much of the credit for this transformation goes to a network of generous alumni and friends who support its work with $55 million a year in private gifts. The University s endowment has grown from $114.3 million in 1995 to $421.4 million last year, an increase of 269 percent, ranking UM among the best endowed public institutions per capita in the nation. Nearly 110,436 living Ole Miss alumni and friends represent every state in the nation and 80 foreign countries. The University awards approximately 3,408 degrees annually; nearly 150,000 degrees have been awarded during its 160-year history. Robert C.
