1 by Lauren Tatum Auburn University athletes had an enormously successful trip to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Thirty-one athletes representing the Tigers competed in an array of events and collected a grand total of 18 medals. Swimmers from the Plains finished the summer games with an astounding number of medals, 13 to be exact, which was more than any other school in the country. Thirteen different countries were represented by the Tigers, and their participation ranked Auburn at sixth place among U.S. universities in Forbes Magazine. Reaching the status of an Olympic athlete is an incredible achievement, but combined with the Tigers overwhelming accomplishments and their experience in Beijing, it was a once in a lifetime experience that changed their lives forever. It was such an amazing experience, Stephanie Horner added, a record-breaking swimmer from Canada who represented the Tigers. The whole team was together and everyone supported each other. The people of Beijing treated all of the participating athletes like royalty, and they made representatives from the Plains as comfortable and happy as possible. They had so many volunteers, Matt Targett, a bronze and silver medalist swimmer for Australia, said. They treated us like kings and queens. Even when we would try to put our trash away, they did not want us to touch the trash cans. I mean, they did everything for us. They went as far as standing at the refrigerators of yogurt to open the door for us. I was blown away. Just completely blown away. No matter how many accommodations were implemented, being in a foreign country can still make some miss the culture and food of their homeland. However, Beijing took care of the athlete s needs in every way possible so that the feel of home was always in reach. You could go to the cafeteria and get whatever you wanted, Horner said. They even had an international section with pizza and oatmeal. And if you thought of anything else that you wanted, all you had to do was go up to the person in charge and they would take care of it. The people of Beijing also made sure that unfortunate situations were handled promptly and with sincerity to make the From left to right: Brett Hawke, Fred Bousquet and Cesar Cielo athletes as comfortable as possible. Someone got the chicken pox there, Horner said. They took care of her and even sent her flowers. I thought that was so awesome. Luckily, Tiger athletes did not have to deal with any distractions during their trip to Beijing. I feel accomplished, because that is what I wanted to do, Targett said with a smile. It took a little while to set in that I won medals for my country. With the first medal I won, we had two guys that were thrown out from complete exhaustion after the race. We thought we were going to get the gold. We gathered our best effort, but we got the bronze. We were disappointed about that at first. But once I stood on the podium, I got to shake my childhood hero s hand. He congratulated me, and it all sunk in at that point. I realized how far I had come. Horner shared a similar feeling. At first, I missed breaking a record by 0.1, Horner reflected. I questioned myself about why I could not have just kicked a little harder. Then I swam the 200-meter freestyle and broke the Canadian record. Following that race, I swam first in a relay and broke the record again. It was the best time of my life, so I was really, really happy. Aside from competing, Tiger athletes were also rewarded with a bit of well-needed free time during the Olympics. They chose to use their breaks for resting and exploring the rich culture of China. I got to go to Summer Palace, Horner added. Summer Palace was probably my favorite. It was peaceful, beautiful and just so relaxing. Having family on hand certainly helped with the challenging feelings that come from world-class competition and living in a new culture that the athlete s experienced. My parents came over to watch, which meant a whole lot to me, Horner said with a smile. My coach was not there, so I had to do a lot of ing. But all the support was just great. Whether or not I did good or bad, people were there for me no matter what. Even with the help of family, the athletes had to ultimately rely on themselves to obtain their goals. I learned to stay positive and not freak out, Horner said. If I focused on what other people were doing, then it would mess me up. I just believed in everything I had done all along; I listened to my coaches and it worked out just fine. For Targett, the realization of the number of people throughout the world that watched the Olympic Games and had an interest in the Tigers accomplishments was unexpected. I got back to my room after receiving a medal and checked my and Facebook, Targett exclaimed. I saw how many people watched me achieve my goals, and I realized it was not such a private thing anymore. The whole experience was indescribable, and it exceeded my expectations in every sense. 7 The University of Arkansas, the flagship campus of the University of Arkansas System, resides on a former hilltop farm overlooking the Ozark Mountains to the south. At the University s founding in 1871, the site was described as second to none in the state of Arkansas. Located in Fayetteville, the university is both the major land-grant university for Arkansas and the state university. The university was created under the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862, whereby federal land sales provided funds for new colleges devoted to agriculture and the mechanic arts, scientific and classical studies, and military tactics, all designed for the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes. The university s founding satisfied the provision in the Arkansas Constitution of 1868 that the General Assembly establish and maintain a state university. Citizens in Fayetteville and surrounding Washington County raised $130,000 to secure the university s location in a statewide competition sparked by the General Assembly s Organic Act of 1871, providing for the location, organization and maintenance of the Arkansas Industrial University with a normal department [i.e., teacher education] therein. Today, the University of Arkansas encompasses more than 130 buildings on 345 acres and provides nearly 200 academic programs, more than some universities twice its size. At the same time, it maintains a low student-to-faculty ratio (currently 17:1) that makes personal attention possible. The university promotes undergraduate research in virtually every discipline and makes higher education affordable with competitively priced tuition and generous financial aid. Fayetteville is home to more than 62,000 residents, and growing every day. The city occupies the southern tip of a metroplex that runs northward 25 miles along Interstate 540 through Washington and Benton counties in northwest Arkansas. The metroplex is comprised by the municipalities of Springdale, Lowell, Rogers, Bentonville and Bella Vista, and is home to major international corporations: Tyson Foods, based in Springdale, is the world s largest protein producer; J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc., headquartered in Lowell, is a major transportation and logistics company; and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the world s largest corporation, has its home office in Bentonville. Recently, Kiplinger.com ranked Fayetteville as #7 in their list of Best Cities to Live, Work and Play. Fayetteville has also been named One of America s Most Livable Cities, one of the Top 10 Best Places to Retire, One of America s Hottest Cities, one of the nation s least stressful metro areas, and among the Best Places to Live in America by publications such as Frommer s Guide and Money magazine.
