1 by Wes McDougal Auburn graduate and Birmingham, Ala., native David Hardee turned a once-a-week internship in high school into a career that has carried him to the Scott Boras Corporation, one of the most powerful agencies in professional sports. Since 2003, Hardee has worked for the Scott Boras Corporation as a market and research analyst. While aspects of his work must be guarded, his job involves researching past and current contracts and analyzing the landscape of professional athletics. All of which aides in the negotiations of contracts for players such as Alex Rodriguez and Greg Maddux, just to name a few. Now living in Irvine, Calif., and working in Newport Beach, Hardee s career path began at the former Shades Valley High School. My high school, then known as Shades Valley RLC, had a program in which upperclassmen served internships one day a week, Hardee said. I worked at the media relations offices of both the Southeastern Conference and Samford University. When Hardee enrolled in Auburn University, he was hired as a student assistant in the Sports Information Office by David Housel. With a relatively small fulltime staff, students were counted on to assist with a variety of sports. Hardee worked volleyball, gymnastics and baseball in addition to extensive work with football and basketball. While the volume of work may be initially overwhelming for a student, it proved to be invaluable in preparing Hardee for the professional world. One of the things that was great about working at Auburn was how much responsibility student assistants were given, Hardee said. At some schools, students are just handed the jobs that no one else wants to do. But at Auburn, students were given important duties, whether it was dealing with the football media or handling a sport of their own. So by the time a student has spent a few years at Auburn, he or she is capable of stepping into a fulltime internship or job immediately. While the experience Hardee gained has served him well, it came with the price of consuming time that most others students were using to do what 20-year-old college students do, goof off with friends. Now that I am out of collegiate athletics, I am kind of in awe of people my age and older who still put in those crazy hours, Hardee said. But at the time I worked in media relations, I didn't really think about it. The work is just so much fun. You are, after all, getting paid to go to games. Not much, but you are getting paid. And the student-athletes are great to work with, particularly the ones in sports that don t always get the attention that football or men's basketball do. After graduating with a degree in journalism in 1991, Hardee got his first job in athletic media relations at the University of Virginia ( ). From there, he moved to Baseball America magazine ( ) and then Utah State ( ), the University of Arizona ( ) and New Mexico State University ( ) before accepting a position with the Scott Boras Corporation. Moving from one time zone to another, Hardee has experienced the flavor of many cultures in the United States. One of the great things about working in athletics is that you see different parts of the country when traveling with teams, Hardee said. Plus, I ve had jobs in seven different states. I have to say I've enjoyed living in Arizona and, now, in California more than anywhere else. I miss SEC football, but not enough to make me forget about Alabama humidity. Humidity aside, Hardee s time at Auburn stands out as a good example for others interested in a career in athletics to follow. I would not have been ready (for anything) without my experience at Auburn, Hardee said. Any student interested in a career in media relations would be wellserved to study journalism or communications, but what's most important is experience. Working in a sports information department of a school with a large athletic department is a great opportunity. As with anything, the broader your base of knowledge, the better. Familiarize yourself with as many sports as possible. Also, try to stay on top of the latest technologies Auburn Football Illustrated 61
2 by James Etter After a summer filled with tremendous success at the Olympic Games in Beijing, Auburn s defending Southeastern Conference champion men s and women s swimming and diving teams hope to ride their momentum far into the season. The men, who finished fifth at last year s NCAA Championships in Federal Way, Wa., are focused on success this year behind head coach Richard Quick. Quick, who served as Auburn s head coach from , returned to the Plains last year to guide the Tigers. Although the season will not officially begin for Auburn until mid-october, Quick sees promise in this year s squad. First of all, I like our attitude, Quick stated. This team has really bought into a team emphasis on success in both the SEC Championships and the NCAA Championships. So that s very exciting. Senior Emile Ewing Auburn Football Illustrated The attitude of the Tigers couldn t be better as they prepare for the upcoming season. Senior Matt Targett, who took last season off to train for the Olympics and won bronze in the 4x100 freestyle relay, is more than optimistic about the upcoming season. We have a lot of Olympians coming in, Targett noted. It s going to be very interesting. There s nothing really to predict at this time, but we have the potential to do very well. With three Olympians on this year s team, Jakob Andkjaer (Denmark), Gideon Louw (South Africa) and Targett (Australia), the Tigers look to learn from the experienced swimmers and continue to improve for the difficult months ahead. The great thing about having Olympians around is that they know how to function at the highest level of competition, Coach Quick remarked. They know how to prepare for that level of competition. Their wisdom is tremendous. The men s diving program, coached by Jeff Shaffer, will be led this year by All- Americans Kelly Marx and Dan Mazzaferro and senior Scott Morgan. The Auburn women have set their minds on a better finish than last year s runner-up showing at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. From an early-season standpoint, the women are thinking positive about what could come from this team. Senior sprinter Emile Ewing is happy about where the team is now and only sees better things in the future. I m really excited, Ewing said. The teams are starting to come together nicely. I feel like everyday, we re moving forward and that s what s really important at this time of year getting to know your teammates and finding different ways to get better. Auburn s co-head women s coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker is looking forward to another great year. With a large Senior Matt Targett freshman class, including two Olympians, she is seeing promise in the program. We have some rare experience, in that two of our freshmen were at the Olympic Games and performed very well, Coach Tierney-Walker stated. I think the varied range of experience is going to play into the total team chemistry very well. To help guide those freshmen are the two returning NCAA champions Rachel Goh and Ava Ohlgren. Coach Tierney- Walker noted that after Goh took last year off, she has shown a renewed energy and is now performing better than ever, while Ohlgren has developed into a very well-rounded swimmer. The women s diving team, lead by junior Courtney Brown, welcomes five freshmen divers including Jessica Froning, a former member of Auburn s gymnastics team who is a beginner to the sport. The men s and the women s swimming and diving teams open competion Oct.17, at the War Eagle Invitational in Auburn. Both the athletes and the coaches are confident this season will be yet another successful year. When the important meets have started, we are going to show our cards there and hopefully bring as many people as we can with us and bring home the title, Quick said.
