1 The Montgomery Presbyterian Church Newsletter THE CHIMES AUGUST 2018 UPDATE ON INTERIM PASTOR SEARCH We continue to make progress in our search for an Interim Pastor. We have reviewed Pastor Information Forms (PIFs the PC(USA) s required form for extended resumes), held phone or FaceTime interviews with the most promising candidates, and invited several candidates to visit MPC for in-person interviews. Please pray for the interim search committee as we seek the Spirit s guidance in identifying the person who will be best able to work with us to prepare to search for an installed pastor. In our last update, we provided a summary of the responsibilities of the Interim Pastor. Those responsibilities included not only many of the usual pastoral responsibilities, but also completing the Five Tasks of Interim Ministry: Celebrating the church's history Strengthening and continuing ties with the Presbytery, Synod and GA Leading the church to a renewed vision for their future Providing for smooth transition of congregational leadership Preparing for the welcoming of the new pastor The only way we ll be able to complete these tasks is through the principled, committed participation of the congregation. One thing we have discussed with the interim pastor candidates is how they would approach reaching out to the entire congregation, so that we might have broad, constructive engagement as we renew our vision of MPC s future. 4 MPC EVENTS Page 4 All women of the church are invited to the Ladies Circle meeting on Thursday, September 6 at noon in the MPC library. We will continue with the Horizons Bible study, Reconciling Paul, lesson 7. Let Sue Poulos know if you need a copy of the lesson. Please bring your lunch. The next Lunch Bunch will be Wednesday, August 8. Come hear General Presbyter Nancy Kahaian present an update on current activities for the Presbytery of Cincinnati. Committee Leaders Needed NEEDED: MISSION CHAIR. Not necessary to be on Session. NEEDED: CHAIR FOR MONTGOMERY WINTER MARKET Also not a Session appointment, but we need someone to be a liaison between MPC and the Market. The Chimes Blessing of the Backpacks The annual Blessing of the Backpacks will take place during the August 5 Worship Service. If you have backpacks for OGB (July Mission collection), please bring them in to be blessed. Our next book is Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, written as a letter from the author to his adolescent son. Informed by his experiences of race throughout his life, his thoughts range from American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son. We will be discussing this book on Monday, August 20, at 7pm at the home of Susie Lewis. Maintenance and Deep Cleaning at the Church On Saturday, July 28 the floors in the Fellowship Hall will be scrubbed and top coated. On Friday, Aug. 3 carpets in all areas of the church will be steam cleaned. (A few items such as boxes and files will need to be moved off the ground prior to this cleaning. If you can help with this prep work, please see Bertie Spicker after 7/29 Worship.) It is suggested that you avoid the church for meetings or volunteer work on these days. Choir rehearsals will resume Wednesday, August 29. One last unusual week of office hours for the summer: Cathy will work a full day on Monday, August 13 and half days on both Tuesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 16. The office will be closed Wednesday, August th Birthday Celebration Thank you for all of the wonderful birthday cards, the birthday song and good wishes. 5 AUGUST 2018 MPC EVENTS Page 5 MPC s annual picnic was held Sunday, July 9 at Weller Park. Fellowship and fun was enjoyed by all. Highlights from July 15 Session Meeting Session took these actions: Approved funding $20, a portion of the cost of the Managing Conflict in the Church, September , funds coming from CE. Approved returning Scott and Melani Atkinson to the active roll. Approved the transfer of membership for Scott and Melani Atkinson to Covenant-First. Approved the Finance and Stewardship Manual, with the proviso that the manual will always be a work in progress. Approved the 2017 Audit of Montgomery Presbyterian Church prepared by Sue Poulos, Karen Simpson and Dave Hartman. Recommendations: Complete Policy and Procedures Manual, including detail on process for generating semi-annual and annual donor statements, and perform a one-time check that Paycor is properly distributing payroll tax withholding to Federal, State and City governments Approved that realized gains from sale of investments be considered as income for distribution purposes as they are considered income under IRS laws. Attached with full minutes is clarifying language from the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue distinguishing between income and corpus in trust situations. Approved to accept the 2 nd quarter financial statements for Montgomery Presbyterian Church. Approved to Revoke funding from Mission to the One-Way Farm as this organization was dissolved June 1, 2018.

6 AUGUST 2018 PRESBYTERY, Page 6 The workshop will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Wilmington (840 Timber Glen Dr in Wilmington) on September 21 and 22. More details, including a form for registration, can be found in the Gathering Room. The cost is $45. MPC will pay $20 towards this fee. Bowling with Blue Ash Blue Ash Presbyterian invites MPC members to join them for a bowling group. For many years a group has been bowling at 10:00 on Thursday mornings and then going out to lunch (usually Skyline). Its not an official league, just a group of people who like to bowl. Their season is usually late September to late May. If interested, or to get more information, contact Bill at quinkell@cinci.rr.com. Bethel Murdoch Ice Cream Socials BMPC will hold their final ice cream social Saturday, August 11. This last social will feature a craft show and will be held from 3:00-6:30. You can get delicious ice cream to eat there or to go. BMPC is located at 9602 Murdock-Goshen Road in Loveland. For questions, call

7 THE CHIMES MISSION/PARTNERS Operation Give Back, in cooperation with the City of Montgomery, announces a new program, We Thrive! Residents of the City of Montgomery, particularly those with chronic diseases, have the opportunity to receive three free healthy food bundles (including fresh fruits, vegetables, a recipe and pedometer) in August, October and December. Registration is open through July 31. Fliers with more information are available in the Gathering Room. Or, for additional information or questions, call (513) Angel Tree I may be unable to chair the Angel Tree this year and hope someone will volunteer to take over this project. This would require contacting the Caring Place and Lighthouse in November. It would also involve setting up the Angel and Mitten trees, writing the wishes of the children on the angels and seeing that the gifts are delivered by members of MPC. Most of the work has already been done. The angels cutouts have been done and will be ready to hang after writing the gift wishes on them. I also have detailed stepby-step directions in a folder. I do hope someone will volunteer for this worthwhile and rewarding mission project. Sandra Bowen August Mission Collection In August we will collect shampoo, conditioner and deodorant for Lighthouse Youth Services. Page 7 Come join the fun of working on a Habitat for Humanity house. The next work date is Saturday, August 11. MPC is responsible for lunch that date, so there are plenty of ways you can get involved. Please sign up in the Gathering Room. Bocce Ball Court Coming to MPC Last year, Special Olympics (SO) approached Skyward Academy about installing a bocce ball court on the rear lawn of the church property. After seeking and receiving zoning approval from the city, a temporary court will be installed in August; SO will also provide all equipment. SO will run a program for anyone from Skyward or MPC who is interested. MPC members may volunteer (just help the athletes learn and play, making sure everything is good with the court before training) or they could become a Unified Partner. A Unified Partner is someone who would train alongside an athlete as a pair (and eventually compete together if they want). SO will recruit a head volunteer from their organization, or if someone from the church is interested in this role, just contact Cathy in the office. The summer/fall program is slated to run on Tuesdays from August 21 October 23 from 6:30-7:30pm. A sign up sheet will be left in the Gathering Room.
