Were it not for The VFW and The American Legion the next generation may very well forget those that gave their all in the protection of our freedom. And, Yes, we include all of our brother (and now Sister) Coasties in our memorial. A few words regarding our annual October reunion: Your Board of Directors, acting as the Reunion Committee, has selected The Holiday Inn Rivrerview as our host hotel. They provided our group the lowest rate in the area closest to our points of interest. As we have in the past, we will announce the chosen location of our 2015 meeting and take nominations for our 2016 meeting in our Membership Meeting.. As we all are well aware, everything is getting more expensive, including our reunions. It helps us keep our expenses down when you confirm your attendance early, please do! As you know, we elect our officers and directors every even year. All positions are open for nominations. The requirements are minimal, be a member in good standing, be internet competent and available to participate in our business via ( checking e- mails at least once every 24 hours ). Please, consider participating in our democratically operated association. In addition to our regular business meeting, we expect to have at least two guest speakers, one from Coast Guard Sector Charleston and Mr. J.D. McMullen, Esq. that has represented the family of one of our long time members that has Crossed the Bar. Charleston is without a doubt one of our more historic and beautiful cities. Too much to see and do in our short stay. We should consider extending our stay if at all possible. Now a few words about our web site and the great job Rick Gryder continues to do for us: New items of interest are added on a regular basis. Some of the most popular items are pictures of Then and Now. If you havn t sent yours in, please dig through the old boxes of pictures and consider contributing ( it s really surprising how good looking some of us actually were years ago). Also a lot of work goes into just maintaining this web site, just to consider listings are by Hull Number and by the known names of Lightship Sailors that served. This information is important historical information, particularly since it is the only known such record. If you have not visited the site lately, please do so: A huge BZ to all that have contributed to our organization, Keep the Light Shining, Larry

6 6 Roland Holloway, Director of Veterans Affairs To All LSA Members and Veterans: The VA has come under attack lately. We all know of the delays in handling cases and the rejection rate. The latest charges are an example of the incompetence of a few, not the VA as a whole. There are more good than bad things happening that are not making headlines. The web site is an example of where you can get more information than I can share with you. I encourage you to go to and read what is available to you. For example, blood tests and eye glasses. There is truly so much information to be found on this site. I also would urge all of you to read about asbestos and how mesothelioma can occur 50 years after exposure. Familiarize yourselves about this topic and our speaker at the Charleston reunion may be able answer any questions you might have. As of this writing I have had no new requests for hearing loss packets from members. I did give a packet to a former Coastie who has hearing problems from serving on the Diamond Shoals Platform that replaced the Diamond Shoals Lightship which also had a loud fog horn. J. D. McMullen, also known as The Texas Rattler : Has agreed to be our Key Note Speaker in Charleston. His topic of conversation and his expertise applies to each and everyone of us, plan on attending. Since 2005, Mr. McMullen has represented hundreds of civilians, veterans, and their families, all across our country, who have been victims of the asbestos epidemic, which was the result of corporate negligence, misconduct and greed. For over half a century, asbestos manufacturers hid the truth about the hazards of asbestos in order to maximize profits, which has resulted both in the death of our loved ones and the inability for them to live the normal lives that all citizens strive to achieve. He has fought vigorously and tirelessly to help mend the emotional and financial devastation suffered by these victims and their families, and continues to be an advocate for truth and corporate responsibility to help prevent other families from suffering the same fate. During his relatively short career, Mr. McMullen has achieved over $400,000,000 in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients, and was named one of Texas Top Outstanding Young Lawyers in Personal Injury Litigation for In addition, his peers in the legal community also selected him as a Texas Rising Star for 2013 and He is also a member of the State Bar of Texas, American Bar Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, and Houston Young Lawyers Association. Hope everyone has a great summer and look forward to seeing you in Charleston. Roland EDITOR S NOTE: The USCG Lightship Sailors Assoc Int Inc. has invited Mr. McMullen as guest speaker, this is not an endorsement and The LSA Will receive no compensation of any kind. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Only Irish Coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups Alex Levine Page 6

On 15 May, 1934, The Lightship was rammed by the Olympic, Sister of the famed Titanic. There were Four Survivors, The Captain, Radioman, and two Crew. Seven Souls lost their lives. Only one Body recovered, the other six, lost with the Ship. Please Note: As Chairman over the maintenance of the Lightship Sailor Memorial in New Bedford, work progresses and we hope to once again Have a gathering in recognition of those lost in the performance of their Duties again in the near future. Ron Janard / LSA Historian &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& For those of you interested in some of the details of the annual patch and how the finished design came to be: The Lightship Station was 8 ½ miles off of Ft. Sumter, established in 1894 as Rattlesnake Shoal, later re-named Charleston. A total of eight Lightships served on this station in the period of , The last Charleston Lightship was the LV 53 (after 1939 designated LV53/501 on Stonehorse Shoal Station). The hull color on Charleston is unknown, therefore we are showing white. The Cutter in the background is the 4 th of the new Legend Class Cutter, and the first to be stationed on the East Coast in Charleston, The USCGC Hamilton 753. Delivery has been delayed until approximately December I hope you enjoy the annual patch, Dennis Cosmo, Past President- Director Arts and Graphics Dennis &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& A politician (bureaucrat) is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country. 8 8 1st VP REPORT Bill Quiqley, 1st VP First VP/Director of Publicity Report Since the publication of the Winter Edition of the Fog Horn there has been some help rendered by some of the crew. Deb and Rick Dash and Ed Juratic have given assistance in getting the word out. Deb and Rick have volunteered to speak to several people in their area about the LSA in general. Ed belongs to a few military organizations that have publications where he has listed our reunion. I want to thank Deb and Rick and also Ed Juratic for their time and accomplishments. If any LSA member belongs to any military organization that has a publication please let me know. I will do my best to get our message published. An article about the LSA has been submitted to the American Legion Magazine. As of this writing I have not received any acknowledgment as to whether they will accept it for publication. When ever I see a USCG bumper sticker, window decal or a person wearing a cap with USCG on it, it gives me reason for conversation about the LSA. You might try that. I know that there are folks out there that do not know the LSA exists. For our enrollment to grow we all have to find new members. I hope everyone is looking forward to getting together in Charleston, seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I just know the Sea Stories will be better this year- they seem to grow every year. Charleston is a nice southern city with lots of character and charm. Try not to miss it. Bill B &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Page 8

That is good news for the lake shore and summer at the beach. I don t mean to bore you. Charleston is right around the corner. Make your plans now. Do not wait until the last minute.
