2 FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends, I hope you have had a great summer. As always it seems to have gone by far too quickly. I am excited for fall as we move past Labor Day and into our fall schedule of ministry and life activities. Sunday School will begin on September 11 th and will be held after worship this year. Youth Group will be on Wednesday evenings starting September 14 th and meet the 2 nd and 4 th Wednesday s of the month after Wednesday Praise Service. Choir starts after Labor Day as does the UMW. Many exciting aspects of our ministry get going again in the fall. What a great time of year! We need to remember our mission through the year is to Grow in love of God and our neighbor, to Reach new people with the Love of Jesus Christ and help Heal brokenness in our world. These are things we can and should be doing whether we are in worship, in a small group, at work, shopping or visiting family and friends. It is the command Jesus gave ALL who believe in Him to go and make disciples of all people and teach them to obey everything Jesus taught us. Too often we think it is someone else s job or responsibility to talk to another person about Jesus. But the reality is most people come to faith in Jesus Christ because of a friend. In the last 24todouble lesson we were reminded again of the fact that the way the largest number of people get connect to Jesus and the church is through a friend or relative. Here are the statistics of how people come to Christ: 1% Special need 2.5% Walked in 5% Pastor 2% Visitation 5% Sunday School 15% Evangelistic Crusade 3% Church Program 81% Friend or Relative So the most important thing we can do to grow the church, to fulfill our mission GROW/REACH/HEAL and to expand the Kingdom of God is to count on YOU! Each of us who say we are followers of Jesus has a responsibility to share our faith and invite and welcome others into the family of God. So how are YOU doing? A good question we each need to ask ourselves from time to time. Let s be faithful servants and share our faith. Peace in Christ! CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS COFFEE FELLOWSHIP AND BIRTHDAYS: The fourth Sunday of the month is designated to celebrate people having a birthday in September. There's just one twist. The birthday people are the hosts for that month. One person usually volunteers to be the team leader, and the others step in to help - bring treats, serve, cleanup, etc. With everyone helping, it makes the job easy for all. Thank you to everyone who has celebrated so far! SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAY PEOPLE: September 25 th is our Sunday to celebrate our birthdays during coffee fellowship. We are looking for someone to be the September Team Leader. Contact Karen Andersen if you would like to volunteer at (218) or to andersen.karen@mchsi.com. Set up of getting the coffee going, Koolaid & water in fridge, and any other prep needs to occur between 8:45-9:00 AM. If you can come a little early and help, please do. Just bring your treats to the kitchen. They should be pretty easy to set up on serving trays. Thanks again for helping with the Birthday Sunday. 6 FIRESIDE READERS...READ We meet each month on the 4th Monday of the month by the fireside at church at 6:30 PM. Membership is open to anyone who likes to read and wants to discuss with others. For Monday, September 26th, we are reading The Life We Bury by criminal defense attorney and Minnesota author, Allen Eskens. [18 copies within the Arrowhead system; paperback, ebook and CD] For Monday October 24th, we are reading A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. [12 copies within the Arrowhead system; paperback, audiobook and CD] Join us! FALL FROLICS SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School Rally Day is September 11 th! The new school year is just a couple weeks away. With that we begin a new year of Sunday School. Our first day is September 11 th with class taking place after church. Children will be released before the last hymn and class will end at 11:15. Children age 4 through 5 th grade are welcome to attend. At this time, we will be doing a one room classroom approach. If attendance proves necessary, we will divide by age into 2 groups. To make planning easier we are asking families to please fill out registration forms. They are not required for attendance but do help the teachers get ready for class. To make this year a success we need volunteers who are willing to teach. We understand that everybody has busy schedules. We are not asking for a full year commitment but only one week at a time. Please contact Sue Kolka ( or sjkolka@gmail.com) or sign up at the information booth if you are willing to help. BACKPACK PROGRAM 2016 COMMUNITY CONNECT Fall Frolic planning is underway. Lists have been made and invitations will be arriving soon. We are still in need of one more host. Think about teaming up with friends to make it more fun. You don t have to have it in your home. Maybe a park, here at church, or a local restaurant would work better. Gatherings take place in September and October. If you can host, please contact Sue Kolka ( or sjkolka@gmail.com), Jack Todd ( or lochsand@gmail.com), or Harriet Lucia ( ). Thank you to the GRUMC for participating in the Backpack Program sponsored by ADK [ L o c a l T e a c h e r Fraternity] an d the Salvation Army. With you and others in the community, over 500 students will have a backpack filled with school supplies to start the year with! You have made a difference in someone's life! God bless you! Carol Spooner
