Ephesians 4:1 Study Ntes Fr Ephesians (Chapter Fur) Paul being a prisner f the Lrd was in reference t his being jailed fr preaching the truth (Acts 16:16-25, Acts 28:17, II Crinthians 11:23, II Timthy 1:8, Philemn 1:1, and Philemn 1:9; cf. Mark 13:9). The term beseech is a statement f emphasis (i.e. Rmans 12:1, Rmans 15:30, Rmans 16:17-18, I Crinthians 1:10, I Crinthians 4:16, II Crinthians 10:1, Philippians 4:2, I Thessalnians 2:11 [exhrted], I Thessalnians 4:1 [exhrt], I Thessalnians 5:14 [exhrt], Titus 2:15 [exhrt], Hebrews 3:13 [exhrt], etc.). Walk wrthy (Clssians 1:10, II Thessalnians 2:12, and Revelatin 3:4). We always have t be cautius in nt allwing urselves t frget that we are wrthy because f Christ, nt urselves (Ephesians 2:5-10). There is the balance f walking wrthy withut having the mindset f I have made myself wrthy (Luke 17:7-10). *Mre n this in verse 2. Jhn the baptizer had the right frame f mind (Jhn 1:22-27 and Jhn 3:25-36). In cntrast, there is a walk nt as well (Ephesians 4:17-19). The vcatin [calling] (Ephesians 1:18 and II Timthy 1:9). Called (II Thessalnians 2:14). Ephesians 4:2 With all lwliness [ humbleness f mind ; Strng s # 5012] (Psalms 138:6, Prverbs 3:34, Prverbs 11:2, Prverbs 16:19, Matthew 11:28-30, Acts 20:19, Philippians 2:3-8, and I Peter 5:5-6). With all meekness [gentleness; mildness] (Psalms 149:4, Zephaniah 2:3, I Crinthians 10:1, I Timthy 6:11-12, and II Timthy 2:24-26). This is ne f thse pints where peple lse their minds. They think being meek is being weak in presentatin, presence, etc. Jesus was meek (Matthew 21:5). Hwever, Jesus was nt weak in presence, presentatin, etc. (Jhn 2:13-17). When Paul taught with gentleness (I Thessalnians 2:7). Yet, he never used flattery (I Thessalnians 2:5). Paul did nt weaken himself the face f cntrversy either (Acts 13:7-12, Acts 19:8-10, and Galatians 2:11-17). The attribute f meekness must be exercised when apprpriate, but sharpness must be used when such is apprpriate t (Titus 1:10-14). In cntrast t the wrthy walk, there is a walk nt t (Ephesians 4:17-19). With lngsuffering (Galatians 5:22-23, II Timthy 3:10, and II Timthy 4:2). Frbearing [put up with] (Clssians 3:13) ne anther in lve (Jhn 13:34-35, Galatians 5:13, and Hebrews 13:1). *Never cmprmising the truth (I Timthy 1:3-7 and II Jhn 1:9-11).
Ephesians 4:3 Endeavring [r being diligent] (I Thessalnians 2:17, II Timthy 2:15, II Timthy 4:9, II Timthy 4:21, Hebrews 4:11, II Peter 1:10, and II Peter 3:10-14). Endeavring t keep unity (Psalms 133:1, Matthew 12:30, Matthew 12:46-50, Luke 11:23, Jhn 17:20-23, Acts 2:46, Rmans 12:16, Rmans 15:6, I Crinthians 4:17, Philippians 1:27, Philippians 2:2, Philippians 3:16, and II Jhn 1:9-11). Unity takes diligent effrt because there are thse whm wrk t cause divisin (Prverbs 6:19, Acts 15:1-5, Rmans 16:17-18, I Crinthians 1:10-13, I Crinthians 11:16-19, Galatians 5:20, Titus 3:9-11, James 4:1, and III Jhn 1:9-11). Outside f divisin being sinful, divisin makes it impssible fr the kingdm t stand (Mark 3:24). Unity f the Spirit (Rmans 14:17 and I Crinthians 12:13). The bnd f peace (II Crinthians 13:11, Clssians 3:15, I Thessalnians 5:13, Hebrews 12:14, and James 3:17-18). Remember this verse, as it is the stage (s t speak) frm which the cming cntext is set upn. The subject matter is true unity. Ephesians 4:4 One bdy that is f Gd (Rmans 12:4-5, I Crinthians 10:17, I Crinthians 12:12, Ephesians 2:13-17, and Clssians 3:15). *Nte: the ne bdy is the church f Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23, Clssians 1:18, and Clssians 1:24; cf. Matthew 16:13-18 and Rmans 16:16). There is ne Spirit that is f Gd (Ephesians 2:18, Ephesians 2:22, Ephesians 4:30 [cf. Acts 19:1-7], and I Jhn 5:7) knwn as the Hly Ghst (Jhn 7:39). Remember, there were many spirits at wrk prir t the cessatin f miraculus gifts (Leviticus 19:31, I Samuel 28:1-25, Matthew 8:16, and Acts 19:11-20). The Apstles were given pwer ver the false spirits (Mark 6:7). Christians had t test spirits (I Jhn 4:1-6) and were given by the Hly Ghst an ability t help with such (I Crinthians 12:3-11). Hwever, remember that false wrkers whm had evil spiritual abilities were very capable f deceptin (Matthew 24:24). One hpe f yur calling (Clssians 1:5-6, II Thessalnians 2:14-16, Titus 1:1-3, Titus 3:7, I Peter 1:3-9, and I Jhn 3:1-3). Ephesians 4:5 One Lrd (Acts 2:36, Acts 10:36, Rmans 14:8-12, and I Crinthians 8:6). One faith (Galatians 1:6-12, Galatians 2:16, Clssians 1:23, I Timthy 4:1, II Peter 1:1, Jude 1:3, and Jude 1:20). One baptism (Mark 16:15-16, Acts 8:12-39, Rmans 6:3-6, Galatians 3:26, Clssians 2:12, and I Peter 3:20-21). This shws baptism f Jhn ceased (Acts 19:1-7).
This shws baptism f Hly Spirit (Acts 1:5-8 and Acts 2:1-4) ceased as such did nt save (Acts 10:44-48). This shws baptism f fire [I cannt 100% surely say what such is] (Matthew 3:11) ceased. If it still exists tday [i.e. persecutin (Matthew 5:10-12 and II Timthy 3:12)] yu cannt say that whatever that is pertains t the language f baptism f fire. It culd have, and I stress COULD, pertained t spiritual gifts (i.e. Acts 2:3) as such has ceased (I Crinthians 13:8-13). Ephesians 4:6 One Gd wh is the Father (Malachi 2:10, Matthew 23:9, Mark 12:32, Jhn 20:15-17, I Timthy 2:5, and James 2:19). The Father is abve all (I Chrnicles 29:11, Jb 33:12, Psalms 95:1-6, Isaiah 40:20-21, Isaiah 55:8-9, Daniel 4:34-35, Acts 16:14-17, and Rmans 11:33-36; cf. Luke 1:31-32). *Nte - While Jesus is given all authrity in Heaven and Earth (Matthew 28:18), that is temprary (I Crinthians 15:24-28). The Father is figuratively thrugh all and in all Christians (Jhn 14:23, II Crinthians 6:14-18, I Jhn 4:12, and I Jhn 4:15-16). Ephesians 4:7 Grace given by measure, especially due t ur cntext, is in reference t gifts in Christ f a spiritual [supernatural] nature (Rmans 12:6-8 and I Crinthians 12:3-11). T shw we are talking abut things cncerning the miraculus age tied t the Hly Spirit, cnsider what Jhn said abut Jesus (Jhn 3:31-36). Ephesians 4:8 Wherefre he saith (Psalms 68:18). Jesus [the next tw verses prve we re talking f Jesus] ascended up n high (Luke 24:46-53). He led captivity captive r tk captives culd have several applicatins (Luke 4:18, Clssians 2:14-15, II Peter 2:4 [cf. Matthew 8:16], etc.) r culd just be cited indirectly as Paul was partially quting a verse. In cnnectin with His leaving this wrld (Mark 16:15-20 and Acts 1:6-11) He gave gifts t men (Acts 19:1-7). Ephesians 4:9 Imagery f the death, burial, and resurrectin are nw mentined (Mark 9:31). At this pint the ascensin had ccurred (Ephesians 1:20, Clssians 3:1, and Hebrews 1:1-3). The lwer parts f the earth is imagery f Jesus burial (Mark 15:45-46).
The phrasing here is just t draw the distinctin frm abve t belw (cf. Philippians 2:10). Jesus went t paradise (Luke 23:39-44), in Hades (Acts 2:22-35), prir t His resurrectin and ascensin int Heaven. Ephesians 4:10 The heavens refers t the tempral sky we lk up at (Genesis 2:1, I Chrnicles 27:23, Psalms 19:1, Psalms 102:25, and II Peter 3:7-12). He is far abve all skies (I Timthy 3:16, Hebrews 7:26, Hebrews 9:23-24, and I Peter 3:20-22). That He might fill [fulfill] all things (Acts 3:18, Acts 13:32-33, and I Crinthians 15:3-4). Ephesians 4:11 (cf. Rmans 12:4-8 and I Crinthians 12:28). Gave sme apstles (Matthew 10:1-28, Acts 1:14-26, II Crinthians 1:1, Galatians 1:1, and I Timthy 2:5-7). Gave sme prphets (I Crinthians 12:28-31 and Ephesians 2:20-22). *The prphets had a rle, but hw the Gspel was delivered was nt likened thrugh the prphets f new in the same way as the prphets under the Old Law (I Crinthians 14:23 and Hebrews 1:1-2; cf. I Crinthians 14:28-32). Gave sme evangelists (Acts 8:5-40, Acts 21:8, and II Timthy 4:1-5). Gave sme pastrs [shepherds; cf. I Peter 5:1-4] (Acts 14:23). Gave sme teachers (Acts 13:1 and James 3:1). Understand, in the first century, the Hly Ghst was directly tied t the ffices in the bdy f Christ (i.e. Acts 6:1-8, Acts 20:28, and I Timthy 4:14). Nw, evangelists are taught t be such (II Timthy 2:2) and elders and deacns are appinted by evangelists based upn written qualificatins (I Timthy 3:1-15 and Titus 1:5-14). Teachers are a nw a result f grwth amngst members rather than appintment by the Spirit t an ffice (Hebrews 5:12-14). Ntice, sme f the Scriptures abve shw that sme ffices verlap. I.E. Paul was an Apstle, teacher, prphet, etc. (I Crinthians 13:2 and II Timthy 1:11). Ephesians 4:12 The purpse f the afrementined ffices and gifts were fr the perfecting [καταρτισμός; cmplete furnishing ; Strng s # 2677]f the saints (Ephesians 5:27, Clssians 1:28, and Revelatin 3:1-2). The purpse f the afrementined ffices and gifts was fr the wrk f the ministry [service] (Acts 20:24, I Crinthians 4:1-2, II Crinthians 4:1-7, and Clssians 4:17). The purpse f the afrementined ffices and gifts was fr the edifying f the bdy [church] f Christ (Rmans 14:19). *Mre n edificatin in verse 16. There was a different purpse fr sme spiritual gifts tward unbelievers (Mark 16:15-20) than fr the saints (I Crinthians 14:22-26).
Ephesians 4:13 Till There was a temprary nature t spiritual gifts (I Crinthians 13:8-13). Gd s direct invlvement in these ffices and gifts existed until the revelatin f the ne faith (Jude 1:3). As we ve cvered already, even evangelists and elders, at that time, were appinted supernaturally (Acts 20:28 and I Timthy 4:14). Cnsider, there was nt unity while there was still FULL cnversin frm ne law t anther (cf. Ephesians 2:11-17). They struggled with the cnversin frm the Law f Mses t the wrds f Christ (Acts 15:1-30, Galatians 4:9-11, Galatians 5:1-9, and Clssians 2:8-17). The Spirit and gifts given frm Him was cnfirmatin f the passing law and the new being in effect (Galatians 3:3-5). Cnsider, there was nt unity while there was still things necessary untaught (i.e. I Crinthians 11:34). The unity (Ephesians 4:3) f the [singular] faith (Clssians 1:23 and Clssians 2:6-8). Inspiratin equips [ἄρτιος; cmplete ; Strng s # 739] us in the making f the perfect spiritual man (II Timthy 3:16-17). Getting t the pint wherein man can measure up t the stature [maturity; grwth; age; cf. Luke 2:52 and Jhn 9:23 Pint f Ephesians 4:14] f the fullness f Christ (Ephesians 3:19 and Clssians 2:9-10). Whse steps are we t fllw (I Peter 2:21-22 and I Jhn 2:3-6)? Ephesians 4:14 N mre children (Psalms 119:97-101, I Crinthians 3:1-3, I Crinthians 14:20, and Hebrews 5:12-6:3). Nt being t be tssed t and fr (I Kings 18:21, Hsea 10:1-2, II Thessalnians 2:1-2, James 1:8, James 4:8, and II Peter 3:16-17). Nt carried abut with every wind f dctrine (I Crinthians 12:2, Galatians 1:6-9, Ephesians 5:6-11, I Timthy 6:3-5, and Hebrews 13:9). Nt carried abut with the sleight [fraud] f men (Matthew 24:4, Matthew 24:24, II Crinthians 11:13-15, and II Peter 2:1-3). Nt carried abut by the cunning craftiness f men (Matthew 7:15-20, Galatians 3:1-3, I Jhn 4:1-6, and I Jhn 2:24-26). Nt carried abut by thse in lie in wait t deceive (Jeremiah 5:26-31, Rmans 16:17-18, and II Timthy 3:1-7). Ephesians 4:15 Speaking the truth (Prverbs 8:7, Zechariah 8:16, Acts 26:22-29, Ephesians 4:25, I Timthy 2:7, II Timthy 4:2-5, Titus 2:1, and Titus 2:15). Speaking the truth in lve (Psalms 141:5, Prverbs 3:11-12, Prverbs 27:5-6, and Revelatin 3:19; cf. Jhn 3:1-21).
Cnsider hw the tw pints abve establish hw imprtant it is t have a teacher wh cares enugh t speak the truth in lve (Philippians 2:19-21 and I Thessalnians 2:1-12; cf. Jhn 10:11-13). Grwing up int Him in all things (as we saw in Ephesians 4:14). Christ is the head (I Crinthians 11:3 and Ephesians 5:23-25). Ephesians 4:16 The whle bdy is fitly jined tgether frm Christ (Ephesians 5:29-30 and Clssians 2:19). The pint being, whether individually, cncurrently, r cllectively; all we d aright cmes back t ur Lrd (Jhn 15:1-7). Every jint [each member, accrding t ability] supplieth (I Crinthians 12:14-27). Effectual wrking means efficiently r prperly wrking (i.e. I Thessalnians 2:13). Edificatin f the bdy ccurs thrugh every member f the bdy (Rmans 15:1-3, II Crinthians 12:19, I Thessalnians 5:11-14, and I Timthy 1:3-4). Ephesians 4:17 The wrd testify here adds emphasis (Acts 20:26 and I Thessalnians 4:6). Dn t be like ther Gentiles is nt t say that all Gentiles were all damned and withut hpe (Rmans 3:9-24, Rmans 3:29, and I Crinthians 12:13). The Gentiles did have, frm their cnduct being a peple utside f the Law f Mses, a histry f sinful behavir (I Peter 4:1-5). Thus, the qualifier f walking in the vanity f their mind is the significant lessn in this Scripture (Psalms 119:113, Isaiah 55:7, Jeremiah 4:14, and Mark 7:21-23). Thus, the pint f a Christian cntrlling his r her thughts is the pint (Ezekiel 18:31, Rmans 12:1-3, Rmans 13:14, II Crinthians 10:5, and Galatians 5:16-26). Ephesians 4:18 A darkened understanding (Rmans 1:21 and Clssians 1:21) ppsed t being enlightened (Ephesians 1:18). When smene desn t have an understanding the wrd f Gd is ineffective (Matthew 13:19). Alienated frm the life f Gd THROUGH [inferred willful] IGNORANCE (Prverbs 19:2, Acts 17:16-30, and I Peter 1:13-16). The why blindness f heart (Matthew 13:15). We believe frm the heart (Rmans 10:10). We bey frm the heart (Rmans 6:17). Thus, if the heart is nt right ne cannt believe r bey (Acts 8:21-22; cf. Luke 8:5-15). That is nt t say ne cannt leave darkness and walk in the light (Acts 26:18 and Ephesians 5:8). Ephesians 4:19 Past feeling meaning n lnger a wrking cnscience (I Timthy 4:1-5).
Thugh cnscience is nt a reliable standard t live by (i.e. Acts 23:1 and Galatians 1:13), a faithful Christian must have a gd cnscience (I Timthy 1:5 and I Peter 3:16). They had given themselves ver t lasciviusness [unbridled lust; wantnness] (Rmans 13:13). They wrked uncleanness [impurity physically r mrally] (Rmans 6:19, Ephesians 5:3, Clssians 3:5, and I Thessalnians 4:7). They did these things with greediness [cvetusness; greedy desire fr mre] (Luke 12:15). Ephesians 4:20 Christ hasn t taught us/them t walk as ther Gentiles walked (I Jhn 2:3-6). If yu learn Christ yu learn righteusness (Rmans 8:10, Rmans 3:22, Rmans 10:4, I Crinthians 1:30, and Philippians 1:11). Ephesians 4:21 Really hearing the Lrd s wrd is mre than just listening t wrds (Matthew 13:10-16, Matthew 15:10, and Hebrews 3:6-7). Really hearing the Lrd s wrd is abut relatinship (Jhn 8:31-44 and Jhn 10:25-27). This is nt teaching that these Ephesians literally heard Jesus when He was teaching n earth (Clssians 1:4-6). This cngregatin did nt begin till lng after Christ died (Acts 19:1-7). When ne hears the wrds f the messengers f Christ they are hearing the wrds f Christ (Matthew 10:40, Luke 10:1-16, and Jhn 13:20). Being taught by Christ carries an inferred desire t learn (i.e. Philippians 3:8-10). The truth is in Jesus (Jhn 1:14, Jhn 1:17, Jhn 14:6, and I Jhn 5:20). Ephesians 4:22 Put ff the frmer cnversatin [manner f life] (Acts 26:18-20, I Crinthians 6:9-11, Galatians 1:13-24, Ephesians 2:1-3, Hebrews 12:1-3, I Peter 1:18, and I Peter 4:1-5). Get rid f the ld man (Rmans 6:1-18). The ld man was crrupt (Titus 3:3) accrding t deceitful lusts (Jeremiah 49:16, Obadiah 1:3, and Hebrews 3:13). Ephesians 4:23 A renewed way f thinking (Isaiah 55:7-9, Jeremiah 4:14, Ezekiel 18:31-32, Rmans 12:1-3, II Crinthians 10:5; cf. Prverbs 23:7 and Matthew 15:18-20). Ephesians 4:24 Put n the new man (Clssians 3:1-17) is in reference t the spiritual man within us (II Crinthians 4:16 and II Crinthians 5:17). Created in Gd in righteusness (Ephesians 2:10 and Titus 2:11-14).
Created in Gd in true hliness (I Peter 1:13-16 and I Jhn 3:1-3). Fr the sake f clarity, Gd des nt make us hly r righteus. We need t becme righteus (Prverbs 21:21 and I Jhn 3:7-10). We need t becme hly (II Crinthians 7:1). That is NOT t say Gd desn t have a part in such either (Rmans 5:19 and Revelatin 1:5). Ephesians 4:25 Put away lying (I Kings 13:1-32, Prverbs 6:16-19, Prverbs 19:5, Prverbs 19:9, Acts 5:1-10, and Revelatin 21:8). Speak truth with yur neighbr (Prverbs 8:7, Prverbs 12:17, Prverbs 22:20-21, Zechariah 8:16-17, Acts 26:25, Rmans 12:17, Ephesians 4:15, and I Timthy 2:7). Gd wants everyne t knw the truth (I Timthy 2:4). Fr peple t be saved they have t knw the truth (II Thessalnians 2:10-12). Never suppress the truth (Rmans 1:18). It is very clear that members f the church are members f ne anther (Rmans 12:4-5). We must als understand that, thugh different than ur spiritual unity, there is a carnal unity with all f humanity (Acts 17:26-28). In this understanding, ur lving f ur neighbrs as urselves (Rmans 13:9-10) shuld mtivate ur desire t teach them all (II Timthy 2:24-26). Ephesians 4:26 Anger is dangerus (Prverbs 14:17, Prverbs 15:18, Prverbs 22:24, Prverbs 29:22, Ecclesiastes 7:9, and James 1:19-20). Hwever, this verse shws us we can be angry and nt sin (Jeremiah 15:17, Mark 3:1-6, and Titus 1:7). Yu just have t be able t cntrl that anger (Prverbs 14:29, Prverbs 16:32, and Prverbs 19:11; cf. II Peter 1:5-6). Dn t cntinue in a state f anger/wrath (Psalms 37:8). Ephesians 4:27 Matthew 4:1-11, Ephesians 6:10-11, James 4:7, and I Peter 5:8-9. Neither Satan himself r demns directly invlve themselves with us tday (Jude 1:6, II Peter 2:4, and Revelatin 20:10). The direct invlvement f devils in the 1 st century had a reasn (Luke 9:1-2 and Mark 16:15-20) that is past tday (I Crinthians 13:8-13). Tday, the children f Satan we must be aware f (I Crinthians 15:33) are sinners (I Jhn 3:8-10). Ephesians 4:28 Steal [think f the brad subject matter; theft f services, fraud, false business practices, debts, etc.] n mre (Exdus 20:15, Leviticus 19:11, Leviticus 19:13, Psalms 62:10, Jeremiah 7:9-10, Matthew 21:12-13, Rmans 13:9, and I Peter 4:15).
Wrk/labr fr what yu need (Prverbs 20:4, II Thessalnians 3:10, and I Timthy 5:8). Then, becme the persn wh can/will help thers in true need (Acts 20:32-35 and Galatians 2:10). Cnsider the direct applicatin here t the Christians in Ephesus. They lived in a city wherein peple came frm all ver t see the idl Great Gddess Diana (Acts 19:21-41). The Christians in Ephesus wuld have t make sure they had n part in fraudulent practices that culd easily cme frm idlatry (i.e. selling trinkets that prmised smething frm Diana, etc.). Ephesians 4:29 N crrupt cmmunicatin ut f yur muth is a very brad subject matter (Psalms 39:1, Prverbs 4:24, Prverbs 15:4, Prverbs 15:28, Matthew 12:34-37, Clssians 3:8-9, James 3:2-18, and I Peter 3:10-11). Rather, cmmunicatin that can edify (Prverbs 25:11-12, Rmans 14:19, and Rmans 15:2). Cmmunicatin that can minister grace t the hearer (Clssians 4:6). Fr discussin, cnsider hw many misunderstand what is edifying speech What it is (Acts 20:32). It is nt speech that makes sinners feel gd (Prverbs 17:15). Fr thse wh redefine edifying speech t mean nn ffensive, they must cnsider the wrds f Jesus. Jesus called men: hypcrites, dg, swine (Matthew 7:1-6), little faith (Matthew 8:26), faithless and perverse (Matthew 17:17), Satan (Matthew 16:21-23), blind guides (Matthew 23:16), fls (Matthew 23:17 and Luke 11:40), hypcrites (Matthew 23:23), expsed them fr fakes (Matthew 23:26-28), generatin f vipers (Matthew 23:33), called king Herd a fx (Luke 11:31-32), f yur father the devil (Jhn 8:44), liar (Jhn 8:55), damned (Mark 16:15-16), etc. Jhn the baptizer called erring men: generatin f vipers (Matthew 3:7 and Luke 3:7). Paul called men: child f devil and then struck him blind (Acts 13:8-11), ignrance (Acts 17:22; 30), grievus wlves (Acts 20:29), ignrant (Rmans 10:1-3), rebuked Peter fr nt walking uprightly penly befre all (Galatians 2:11-17), flish (Galatians 3:1-3), seducers (II Timthy 3:13), etc. The prphets f ld: called the children f Israel harlts (Jeremiah 3:1) and whres (Ezekiel 16:28) fr spiritual errrs, wild ass (Hsea 8:8-9), brutish (Prverbs 12:1), brutish and fls (Psalms 94:8), etc. Nte this: (10) Fr there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they f the circumcisin: (11) Whse muths must be stpped, wh subvert whle huses, teaching things which they ught nt, fr filthy lucre's sake. (12) One f themselves, even a prphet f their wn, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slw bellies. (13) This witness is true. Wherefre rebuke them sharply, that they may be sund in the faith; (14)
Nt giving heed t Jewish fables, and cmmandments f men, that turn frm the truth (Titus 2:10-14). Ephesians 4:30 The Spirit f Gd can be grieved [cause t be srrwed] (Isaiah 63:10). As discussed in this bk already, the Ephesians were sealed with the Hly Spirit (Ephesians 1:13; cf. Acts 19:1-7). Remember, this is in reference t their spiritual gifts (Ephesians 4:7-13), thus the applicatin t this passage is nt fr us tday (I Crinthians 13:8-13). Sealed unt the day f redemptin (Ephesians 1:14). Ephesians 4:31 Put away bitterness (Hebrews 12:15). Put away wrath (James 1:19-20). Put away anger (Prverbs 29:22) thugh yu can be angry and nt sin (Ephesians 4:26). Put away clamur [ut crying] (Acts 21:28-36). Put away evil speaking (I Peter 2:1). Put away malice (I Crinthians 14:20). Ephesians 4:32 Be kind t ne anther (Rmans 12:10, Clssians 3:12, and II Peter 1:7). Like many mistaken instructins, being kind t brethren is misunderstd t mean never rebuke, speak sharply t, etc. This wuld be wrng (I Timthy 5:20 and Titus 1:13). Jesus taught that kindness wasn t a give and take (Luke 6:35). Jesus als shwed that being kind desn t mean yu dn t say what is necessary when needed thught it may nt be cmmnly received as kindness (Matthew 8:23-27 and Matthew 16:21-23). Be tenderhearted [pitiful] (Prverbs 19:17, Matthew 18:21-35, and I Peter 3:8). Frgiveness (Matthew 6:14-15 and Luke 6:37) patterned after the manner in which Christ grants frgiveness (Luke 13:1-5, Clssians 3:13, I Jhn 1:9, and Revelatin 2:21-22).
