1 Ephesians 4:1-16 (study 7) We have been called t lve ne anther in the unity f the Spirit. We have been saved and given wrd gifts t encurage the whle church t serve s that the church can grw, in numbers, in faith, and in maturity nt drifting away, but maturing in Christ thrugh lving ne anther and thrugh wrks f service. 1 As a prisner fr the Lrd, then, I urge yu t live a life wrthy f the calling yu have received. 2 Be cmpletely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with ne anther in lve. 3 Make every effrt t keep the unity f the Spirit thrugh the bnd f peace. 4 There is ne bdy and ne Spirit-- just as yu were called t ne hpe when yu were called-- 5 ne Lrd, ne faith, ne baptism; 6 ne Gd and Father f all, wh is ver all and thrugh all and in all. 7 But t each ne f us grace has been given as Christ apprtined it. 8 This is why it says: "When he ascended n high, he led captives in his train & gave gifts t men." 9 What des "he ascended" mean except that he als descended t the lwer, earthly regins? 10 He wh descended is the very ne wh ascended higher than all the heavens, in rder t fill the whle universe.) 11 It was he wh gave sme t be apstles, sme t be prphets, sme t be evangelists, and sme t be pastrs and teachers, 12 t prepare Gd's peple fr wrks f service, s that the bdy f Christ may be built up. 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knwledge f the Sn f Gd and becme mature, attaining t the whle measure f the fullness f Christ. 14 Then we will n lnger be infants, tssed back and frth by the waves, and blwn here and there by every wind f teaching and by the cunning and craftiness f men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in lve, we will in all things grw up int him wh is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 Frm him the whle bdy, jined and held tgether by every supprting ligament, grws and builds itself up in lve, as each part des its wrk. 1-6 Live as yu ve been called, lving ne anther in the unity f the Spirit. 3 Ephesians 4:17-24 (Study 8) Hw wuld yu g abut tackling a persistent sin in yur life Hw wuld yu practically g abut changing that behaviur They must n lnger live separated frm Gd because f their hard hearts, blindly indulging all kinds f sin, but never being satisfied. Nw, knwing the truth in Christ they are t actively fight sin and learn t live ut wh they were created t be. 17 S I tell yu this, and insist n it in the Lrd, that yu must n lnger live as the Gentiles d, in the futility f their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated frm the life f Gd because f the ignrance that is in them due t the hardening f their hearts. 19 Having lst all sensitivity, they have given themselves ver t sensuality s as t indulge in every kind f impurity, with a cntinual lust fr mre. Spiritual blindness/separatin -> because hard hearts -> leading t numbness & indulgence that never satisfies. Bible Tls: Repeated wrds: Linking wrds: Cntrasts: Tense: They mustn t live as yu nce did, separated frm Gd, because f their hard hearts, blindly indulging in sins which never satisfy! What is the theme f this sectin? [Nt t live as yu nce did = alienated frm Gd, blind] [Nte: it describes Gentiles but this is wh we were] What s the biggest prblem fr the Gentiles? [Separatin frm Gd ] What s causes that separatin? [the hardening f their hearts makes them blind, ignrant, senseless ] And what des that in turn lead t? (See Table n wrksheet) What is Paul s desire fr them? What causes this separatin? What is the result? 20 Yu, hwever, did nt cme t knw Christ that way. 21 Surely yu heard f him and were taught in him in accrdance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 Yu were taught, with regard t yur frmer way f life, t put ff yur ld self, which is being crrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 t be made new in the attitude f yur minds; 24 and t put n the new self, created t be like Gd in true righteusness and hliness. Big Idea: They must n lnger live separated frm Gd because f their hard hearts, blindly indulging all kinds f sin, but never being satisfied. Nw, knwing the truth in Christ they are t actively fight sin and learn t live ut wh they were created t be But nw, knwing the truth in Christ, they are t actively fight sin, t live ut what they were created t be. What is the theme f this sectin? [T put n the new self t live ut what we were created t be] Hw did we cme t knw Christ? [Heard the truth that was taught] What are we t d with the ld life? [Put it ff] Why? [(1) Because it is crrupted by sin, (2) s that we can be made new in the attitude f ur minds. What des it mean in V24b that we are created t be like Gd in true righteusness and hliness? [We are made in the image f Gd, sin crrupted it, but nw we are in Christ we are a new creatin we must life ut what we are]. Why d yu think Paul uses Put ff and Put n language? [We must be actively ding it] [We must be aware f ur ld sins.. and fight them] Why is it s imprtant that Paul insists n it, in the name f the Lrd? [It separates us frm him v18] Sum: Hw did they cme t knw Christ? What are they t d nw they are saved? Why? APPLICATION: What is the prblem f sin left unchecked? Having finished the study, hw d yu think yu shuld apprach changing sinful behaviur? What des it mean t live ut wh yu were created t be? [Be like Jesus, life befre the fall sinless]

5 Ephesians 4:25-5:5 (Study 9) If we are saved by grace, why shuld we live as if we re still fllwing the Law? Paul tells the Ephesians t put ff sinful behaviur, and t put n hly behaviur, because they must live ut wh they are as saved peple and fr the sake f unity. 17 S I tell yu this, and insist n it in the Lrd, that yu must n lnger live as the Gentiles d, in the futility f their thinking. 18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated frm the life f Gd because f the ignrance that is in them due t the hardening f their hearts. 19 Having lst all sensitivity, they have given themselves ver t sensuality s as t indulge in every kind f impurity, and they are full f greed. 20 That, hwever, is nt the way f life yu learned. 21 when yu heard abut Christ and were taught in him in accrdance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22 Yu were taught, with regard t yur frmer way f life, t put ff yur ld self, which is being crrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 t be made new in the attitude f yur minds; 24 and t put n the new self, created t be like Gd in true righteusness and hliness. 25 Therefre each f yu must put ff falsehd and speak truthfully t yur neighbur, fr we are all members f ne bdy. 26 In yur anger d nt sin : D nt let the sun g dwn while yu are still angry, 27 and d nt give the devil a fthld. 28 Anyne wh has been stealing must steal n lnger, but must wrk, ding smething useful with their wn hands, that they may have smething t share with thse in need. 29 D nt let any unwhlesme talk cme ut f yur muths, but nly what is helpful fr building thers up accrding t their needs, that it may benefit thse wh listen. 30 And d nt grieve the Hly Spirit f Gd, with whm yu were sealed fr the day f redemptin. 31 Get rid f all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, alng with every frm f malice. 32 Be kind and cmpassinate t ne anther, frgiving each ther, just as in Christ Gd frgave yu. 1 Fllw Gd s example, therefre, as dearly lved children 2 and walk in the way f lve, just as Christ lved us and gave himself up fr us as a fragrant ffering and sacrifice t Gd. 3 But amng yu there must nt be even a hint f sexual immrality, r f any kind f impurity, r f greed, because these are imprper fr Gd s hly peple. 4 Nr shuld there be bscenity, flish talk r carse jking, which are ut f place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 Fr f this yu can be sure: N immral, impure r greedy persn such a persn is an idlater has any inheritance in the kingdm f Christ and f Gd.
