3 Anita s Announcements.. Anita Erskine at the Manawatu Conference. (photo: Liz Brook) In December 2007 the Southland branch had its 30th Anniversary dinner. At the Crorydon in Gore 46 past and present members had a wonderful time. It was great meeting past members, especially those who were present at the first ever meeting held in Lumsden in December When the minutes of the first meeting were read out at the dinner, one of the past members said that she could picture the people in the room and how the meeting went. It brought back a lot of great memories for the early Southland members. Everyone who was at the dinner said that they had a really great time. At the end of 2007 the BCSBANZ lost a wonderful member, Ron Allen. Ron s wife Barbara is currently the National Association s Secretary & Treasurer. Ron was her number one supporter. As was said at Ron s funeral if you thought of Ron you thought of Barbara and vice versa. They were a wonderful team, supporting each other in what they did. Ron was the Mid Canterbury branch President. He was the Interim Archivist, a councillor and an associate sheep judge. Ron will be very much missed by his wife, Barbara and their family. He will also be missed by their business Saxon Appliances and will be greatly missed by the BCSBANZ. At this time our thoughts go to Barbara and the family. Mid January was the South Island sale in Waimate. It was great catching up with people at the sale. I would like to congratulate Peter Gould on getting the top price at the sale. I have seen Peter take a number of knocks at past sales but he has come back from these knocks and this year he proved that he can produce top quality stock that people want. With this magazine you will receive a flock book return. It would be great if we could have every member list their flock in the flock book. If you are ever traveling the country, the flock book is one thing that you pack as everywhere you go there are bound to be members you can visit. Please make sure that you get your returns in as early as possible. I always try to work on it the day I put the ram out, as I know that day how many ewes I have, the sires I am going to use and I have a good idea of what lambs I am going to keep. Mid February at Westwood was a very busy time with shearing lambs and making hay or baleage. I also took some sheep and cattle to a couple of shows, so I had to find the time to train the cattle. We are so thankful that we are able to make winter feed. There are a lot of places in New Zealand that are going to have a hard time getting through the coming winter if some rain does not arrive shortly. Dad said If you go back to the 1970s we had dry summers then, like we are having this year. But today farmers are pushing to the limit their farms, so there is no room for a bad year, where as back in the 1970s farms were not stocked so heavily therefore allowing give and take in the dry summers and wet winters. It won t be long before we will all be heading to Timaru for the AGM and Conference. It is always a good time to catch up on old friends and make new ones. At the AGM on May 10th, we will be considering a change to the membership section in the constitution. Please take the time to read the proposed changes put forward by the executive, then come to the AGM and have your say. This year we have a few vacancies that need to be filled. We are looking for councillors and an Archivist. We are also looking for a new treasurer as Barbara feels that with Ron no longer there to help her behind the scenes, it would be better to concentrate on one job only. I am sure that there are members out there who can fill the above vacancy, they may just need a little encouragement to come forward. At this year s AGM I am sure that we are going to be a room full of very intelligent people especially after you read the thought I found. Intelligent people are always eager and ready to learn. Intelligent people think before they speak; what they say is then more persuasive. Looking forward to meeting up with as many of you as possible in Timaru come May. Anita Erskine No. 126 March

4 It is with great sorrow that we include the following eulogy for Ron Allen, who was President of the Mid Canterbury branch until his sudden and unexpected death on 28 December This eulogy was given at his funeral on 3 January Members of the BCSBA formed a guard of honour at the conclusion of the service. The Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association of New Zealand celebrates the life of a popular and valued member. We extend to Barbara and her family our sincere sympathy at this time of their great loss, and we share your loss, for we have lost a very good friend, a very good worker and a valued member. Ron and Barbara have been members of our Association for a good number of years now. At the time of his death, Ron was President of the Mid Canterbury Branch and also an associate sheep judge. He has been a National Councillor since 2004 and was also the interim archivist. These jobs were all willingly done in an efficient manner and we knew there was a competent person involved. A tribute to Rob Allen Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association of New Zealand Magazine behind the scenes. In 2004 New Zealand had the honour of hosting the World Congress for Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders, held in Christchurch. Ron was not on the organizing committee, but the time and effort he gave was immense. He had a business knowledge and local contacts which were invaluable. He made his business available for meetings, storage and a vehicle and time available to transport wool and stands. A comment heard several times from the organizing committee was I don t know how we would have got on without Ron, nothing is a problem to him. This attitude of will do, can do was a mark of Ron s positive nature. At the recent Royal Show we had a display in the RAS Marquee. Of course someone has to set these things up, and no-one was particularly forthcoming. A phone call to Ron concluded with Just leave it to me, we will jack something up. He did. Barbara has played a very large part in the running of the Association s affairs in recent years and I know that Ron has been very supportive behind the scenes. Over the years Ron has been a great worker for the Association, a man of great integrity, a guy who gets things done and has probably made his greatest impact Ron has been a tower of strength within our membership and will be sorely missed. So we say farewell, and we are very grateful for his considerable contribution. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the amazing support I received following Ron s sudden death during our family summer holiday. We have all been devastated. Thank you to all who sent cards and flowers, attended the funeral and a special thanks to those who took part in the Guard of Honour. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Reg Partridge for his eulogy on behalf of BCSBA. We feel incredibly blessed and proud to have had Ron as a husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He has left us with a huge treasury of memories. Ron was a man whose life touched so many, his smile, willingness to be there when anyone needed a hand and his huge capacity to love his family, life and friends will always be a part of us. With my love and thanks, Barbara Allen No. 126 March

5 Membership matters Subscriptions have been pouring in over the last few weeks, with well over half of the membership having responded already. If you haven t yet sent in your renewal, please do so in the next few weeks, to save me having to send you a reminder. Saves me a job and the Association the price of the stamp! The process of sending out renewals went much better this year, and I even managed to remember to include the green slips for website advertisements. Experience is a great thing! At this time of year there are a number of resignations. It is sad to see the names of old friends on the list of resignations, but many of the letters of resignation have expressed how much they have enjoyed their time in the Association and wished us well for the future. On the brighter side I can also report 5 new and 1 returning memberships. We welcome the following: New Members Gae and Craig Wilson, Hawkes Bay Maree Low, Auckland/Northland Katrina and Mike Harrison, Southland Robin McKinnon, Waikato Bay Jo Walker, Auckland/Northland Returning Member Kate McLachlan, Southland Resignations are received with regret from: Mrs J Galpin, Manawatu Mrs Nancie Allison Silverpeaks) Pat Melvill-Thomson Wairarapa Jenny Reynolds Hawkes Bay Ray Doughty Manawatu) Gordon Reid, Wairarapa David Hewson, South Canterbury-Waitaki Catherine Jane Membership Co-ordinator AGM Reports Membership (2007 Calendar Year) The year 2007 has seen falling membership again, with an overall loss of 11 members. We lost 24 memberships but gained 13; being 8 introductory and 5 returning. It is obvious from the figures that it is getting harder to get new members, with the number of introductory memberships falling dramatically. Three additional introductory memberships were gained towards the end of the year, but as these get 15 months membership, they will be counted as new members in 2008 (this is necessary to avoid double counting). However, while our membership numbers have fallen, it is important that we remember that sheep numbers in New Zealand are also falling, and probably at a much greater rate than our membership. It is encouraging to sign up new members, and my contacts with the wider membership over web site, magazine and membership matters makes me very aware that there is still a strong core of dedicated enthusiasts. Apparently my local Guild of Weavers and Spinners is signing up new and younger members again perhaps this will ultimately also benefit our Association. I m very hopeful too that the future International Year of Natural Fibers (2009) will raise awareness and interest, not only in natural fibres, but in natural coloured fibres. At the last AGM I requested clarification of some membership types, and this was discussed at an executive meeting during the year. Suggested changes will be put to the 2008 AGM. These changes are intended to formalise and clarify current practices, and make them better understood throughout the Association. At the beginning of 2008 the membership information was transferred to a new database system which is updated on the web. This means that information is accessible to a wider range of Association office holders; for example up to date payment information is available to the Treasurer, and I plan to make it possible for branch secretaries to access up-to-the-minute information about their branch membership. All information from the database is accessible by login, only to specified Association office holders. It can also be easily retrieved on request for office holders who do not have web access. In the future, it should be possible to allow individual members to login to see and update their own information if this is considered desirable. The database is easily exported to file for backup purposes or if it is ever necessary to transfer it to different database software. The role of membership co-ordinator is a challenging and busy one, but now I m more confident in the role, I m really enjoying it. It s a great way to get to know people and you certainly get a lot of mail! End of 2005 End of 2006 End of 2007 Membership lapsed Resigned Total members lost Total Introductory members Paid $55 / $ nd family membership ($35) Total financial membership Catherine Jane Membership Co-ordinator No. 126 March

6 North Island sale report 2008 Our 32nd Sale was held at the Pukekohe Showgrounds, South Auckland, on Saturday 8th December The Committee and I would like to express our thanks to Karen Barr who couldn t have been more helpful with assisting to organise this year as it is not easy in a completely different area. The venue was excellent. We used the South Auckland Goat Fibre Producers selling rostrum which was a raised rostrum in a good sized hall with covered pens outside so it was easy to run the sheep around. Note This year the North Island Sale Committee will be holding the annual meeting in the Waikato, hopefully on the Saturday 16th April. Committee members and Branches will be notified of the date, time, and place and any interested members are welcome to attend. There will not be a NI Sale meeting at the Timaru Conference this year. Although every effort had been made to cover local advertising with an article including a photograph, and a leader photo on the front page to say look inside!!!, there were not many public there at all, which was disappointing, but in saying that one couple were very keen to join the Waikato Branch, which was very encouraging for them. Eight vendors entered 34 sheep which came from Hamilton to Kerikeri in the North. This year the two tooth ewes led the sale followed by the ewe lambs. Ten 2th ewes were entered - 4 passed, 6 sold, the average price was $ The top priced ewe was a spotted Polwarth bred by Karen Barr of Pukekohe and sold to Kaye Bellingham also of Pukekohe for $ Of the 14 ewe lambs entered, 4 passed and 1 was scratched, the average price was $33.85 and Karen Barr sold the top priced lamb, $66.00 to Deanne Hall of Pokeno. She was a grey Polwarth It was a shame vendors sold 7of the 9 lambs entered below the upset price of $ With the current climate do we need to look at this???? 8 two tooth Rams were entered, 3 passed, 1 withdrawn, and 1 was moved to the mixed aged class. Of those sold 1 changed hands after the Sale (via agent) for $120.00, 1 for $195.00, and the top price of $ was secured by Caroline Swan of Raglan for a dark Romney, purchased by Jeanette Caldwell of Whangarei. All 3 of the mixed aged rams passed. Thanks to the Northland Auckland Branch members and the Inspectors etc. who worked at the Sale and to Steve from Elders Livestock which was a new participating company this year. Sue Fielder Convenor / Secretary Top prized sheep, 2007 NI Sale - Bred by (R) Carolyn Swan (Raglan), Purchased by (L) Jeanette Caldwell (Whangarei) South Island sale report 2008 The Annual South Island Black & Coloured Sheep Sale was held at Waimate A & P Show Grounds on Saturday 19th January. The Day was fine and warm and attracted a good number of interested people from Southland to North Canterbury. After the sheep had been inspected by a vet and breed inspectors, forty five were offered for sale individually through the ring. Entries were low in the ewe lamb and 2th ewe sections, but good entries were received for the adult ewes which sold steadily and two sought after ewes exceeded $300. A good entry of 2th Rams proved hard to sell with many sheep being passed in. The top price for the sale was $510 for a well grown 2th ram bred by Peter and Melva Gould which sold to a Southland Syndicate. The Auctioneers, Peter Walsh and Associates did a great job and were able to sell some of the passed in stock following the sale. Sale details 3 Ewe lambs 1 sold 2 passed in $80 to Leo & Karen Ponsonby for a Corriedale lamb. 3 2th ewes 1 sold 2 passed in $150 to Peter & Melva Gould for a registered Romney ewe. No. 126 March

7 17 Adult ewes 13 sold 4 passed in Top prices of $330 & $310 to Bruce & Ellen Anderson for registered Romney ewes. Average sale price $ th Rams 4 sold 18 passed in Top price of $510 to Peter & Melva Gould for a registered Romney ram. Average sale price $280 The South Canterbury/Waitaki Branch are once again to be congratulated and thanked for hosting a good sale which concluded with a BBQ at Stuart & Sue Albrey s Reg Partridge S I Sale Convenor Judging committee report 2008 Our Committee has not met since the 2007 conference but have been in contact on some matters. We welcomed Don Monk to our committee this year. Unfortunately Don s name was not included in the Flock Book, page 27, and I ask members to write this in. The Royal N.Z.Show, held at Canterbury Park, was again well supported and a great showcase for our Association. I would like to remind members that this show is NOT the Canterbury Royal Show or the Christchurch Royal Show but the Royal New Zealand Show It is our wish that this will remain the name and that it will again be rotated, at least between Islands. Judges for the 2008 Royal N.Z. Show have been selected. We are always on the lookout for potential Judges and Inspectors as more are needed in some areas. I believe our Judges are of a very high standard and when asked to judge interbreed classes at shows often have a better understanding of other breeds than some of the white breed judges. If any members have queries, complaints, or praise about any matters to do with shows or inspections, please talk to me or any member of our Committee. Anything of a sensitive nature can be kept In Committee if required, so don t be backward in coming forward. Finally, my thanks to the committee members for the past year. Dave Morrison Convenor Promotions Report to A G M 2008 As National Promotions Co-Ordinator I have mixed feelings about the operations of Promotions since our last AGM. I do feel that members engender a lot of enthusiasm and discussion at National AGM time and then go home and don t do a great deal further. However there are some real positives to be taken from our activities both at Branch and National Level. I was able to co-opt Hamish Black and Jacqui Fisher to assist with discussions regarding promotions. The info and contact asked for earlier was only returned by 5 branches. Our meeting in July was constructive and reported on in the September magazine. This is still worth referring to again! Jacqui has since resigned from our committee. Since our July meeting I have gleaned info from Branch Newsletters which have come my way and also noted Branch Reports in the Magazine. Some Branches are active and doing good things in their areas, others need to tell us they are still there. Silver Peaks had a very successful Field Day at the Taieri A & P Showgrounds. Promotions assisted them with $150 for grounds hire. To date this has been the only money spent from the $1000 allocated to promotions at the last AGM. Nationally we had a display at the R.A.S. Marquee at the Royal Show in Christchurch. This was not a site that the public found their way to readily and we could do a better PR job on another site. Creative Fibre did not have an event this year (2007), so we were unable to feature or sponsor prizes for them. Over 110 books of The World of Coloured Sheep have been sold. There is still a market for these books in NZ. All members need to work on this. Overseas orders are slow and there is some difficulty with communication. Again more effort is required. The website is an on going promotional tool and should be kept up to date and made use of at all times. Mary Knox is resigning as Webmaster for BCSBA effective from this AGM. A big thank you to Mary for the enormous amount of work, time, and enthusiasm you have put into this important part of promotions. I know that all Branches are doing their own promotions in their areas; at A & P Shows, newspaper reports, spinning weaving groups as well as other numerous local events. Keep up this good work. Could all Branches please ensure they have their Branch Promotions Person at the Promotions Committee Meeting in Timaru, Thursday 8th May 1:30pm. This will be an important meeting as we explore our future Promotions Strategy. Reg Partridge, National Promotions Co-Ordinator No. 126 March

Proposed Changes to the Constitution At the 69th Council Meeting in Palmerston North it was decided that The executive and Catherine Jane to form the working group to revise and clarify membership types for BCSBANZ. At the executive meeting in November 2007, Catherine Jane joined us. We looked at the different types of memberships that we have versus the membership types that are listed in the constitution in the flock book. It was felt that to revise and clarify the membership types correctly we needed to upgrade the membership section in the constitution. (Page 5 of the 2007 Flock Book.) At the executive meeting we worked our way through the different membership types. I then took this to Preston Russell Law, in Invercargill. The lawyer read the current constitution then had a look through the suggested changes, asking me questions along the way. The lawyer felt that some of the wording that the executive had come up with needed to be altered slightly. With alterations now done and the lawyer pleased with the wording, the proposed changes to the membership section of the constitution are ready for you the members to read, think about and then come to the AGM in Timaru on May 10th 2008 to have your say, after which the changes will be voted on. The lawyer asked that I also let members know that we have made an application to the Charities Commission so that we can keep our tax exemption status, and that the Commission may come back to us stating that some of the clauses in the constitution may need to be changed to comply with the new Charities Act. They may see nothing wrong, but I have noted this in case at some stage we have to call a special meeting for the purpose of altering the constitution to comply with the Charities Act On behalf of the executive I, Anita Erskine, move that we change the Membership Section of the Constitution in the Flock Book to read as follows. Seconded by Catherine Jane. No. 126 March

Anita Erskine President Around the branches Auckland / Northland The year is already racing along and as a branch we have been fairly quiet. Our last event was the N.I. sale at Pukekohe. After some teething hitches this ran smoothly thanks to those branch helpers behind the scenes. If accounts are all paid in full, we even made a profit for the sale committee. Some hitches here too it seems. Anyway all purchasers seem happy, even if you have had to chase your ram around the farm eh Sandra!!! Shows are upon us again, this time around the Auckland area.northern members traveling to Pukekohe, Helensville and Kumeu. In our shows in the North we have had 7 local exhibitors, so that bodes well for future No. 126 March

11 shows. Some of us are nearly past the showing stage as we get old and decrepit, so with younger exhibitors coming along all bodes well for future shows. Our summer weather has been kind to us with rain arriving every time we seem to need it so feed supply is good. Kikuyu grass is showing up in the paddocks making the North look very green. Rams are being put out with the ewes with great expectations for a good lambing as the ewes are in good nick for tupping. Breeding programmes having been well thought out so that this year that super special little B/C lamb may come along in the spring. We welcome new member Marie Low to our midst and look forward to her input into our branch. Conference 2009 is taking shape and we look forward to welcoming you to Whangarei. From our branch members to all BCSBA members best wishes for Helen Kinsella Wairarapa The Wairarapa Branch planned on starting off the new year with a picnic at Mt Holdsworth on Wellington Anniversary Day, but on the day the weather report was for gale force winds and heavy rain so, as it wasn't really looking too bad, we opted for a picnic in the park with an amble around the aviaries and the old pioneer cemetery. After lunch we went for a bit of culture and paid a visit to the Masterton Art Centre, Aratoi, right across the road from the park. As usual, the weather forecast was a false alarm and in spite of all getting our hopes up, we didn't get a drop of rain, but we did get a wander around the park which is something many of us don't do very often. February saw us back at the Masterton Showgrounds for the Masterton Show. We had a good display (see part of it on our webpage) and quite good sales, regardless of the very hot days not being the ideal situation for wool sales. In spite of the very dry conditions and the difficulty in keeping sheep in top condition there were a reasonable number of entries. Hopefully we will have rain and cooler temperatures before too much longer. Marlene Anderson Hawke s Bay On Sunday 28th October, 2007, eight members and one newspaper reporter gathered at the home of Craig Campbell in Dannevirke for the end of Spring field day. We all met a the wool shed to view the new improvements Craig has made to his fleece viewing room. 60 fleeces were on show and the response was very positive - well done Craig. While the weather was still settled, we took the opportunity to inspect the new yards that had recently been built. The responses were excellent with everyone trying the workings then onto the sheep section with lots of interesting discussion on various ways of showing your animals, to fleece selection and general health. We then retired before the next heavy shower arrived to the house where we shared a late lunch and afternoon tea combined with a very valued time to share our ideas and view for the future, a very positive and interesting day. What a great day at Morris and Sandi Meha s home in Waipawa on the 24th November. Morris had worked extremely hard to dig out and prepare a most delicious hangi for the end of year celebrations. 16 members started to arrive with their prized sheep and fleeces to take part in the competitions. Sheep all settled, we then gathered to celebrate and enjoy good friends and great food. After the morish main meal we strolled over to the wool shed to listen to the judging of the various sections. With a lot of expertise chatter, we gathered again to finish with tea/coffee and delicious desserts and present the various prizes, thank the judges and Morris and Sandi our hosts for a most successful day. Still no rain! Good luck to those entering in the A & P Show circuit that has now commenced. Barbara Little Waikato Since the North Island sale in December the branch area has suffered very dry conditions (a drought has been declared for the first time in Waikato) and this has caused members problems they re not much used to dealing with. However 3 members put sheep into the Franklin Show at Pukekohe. There was a good entry (30) with competition from Northland and BOP members which made results more meaningful. David Welch was the judge. Karen Barr did very well with first (Tag 043) and grand champion trophy in the ewe under 21months. Her other ewe in the class was third being separated by Caroline Swann s ewe. Karen also took out first places with a ewe over 21months and with one of her ewe lambs. Caroline had the champion ram (30/05) followed up by entries from Henry & Alma Harte from Te Puke. The reserve champion was a ram lamb (I Like) belonging to the Harte s with the other placings going to Jackie Broughton and George Caddie. No. 126 March

12 Karen was tied for the best woolled sheep until the independent judge gave the trophy to the Perindale. There were only 5 coloured fleeces entered with Karen gaining champion and reserve champion for her fine fleeces. George took first prize in the other 2 classes. The day was a good social occasion and a chance to meet people from other branches. George Caddie Mid Canterbury Our branch was very saddened by the sudden death of Ron Allen, our President on 28th December. Ron was a very keen and enthusiastic member of the branch and also of the National Association. Our branch extended their sympathy to Barbara and family by their attendance at the funeral service in Christchurch. Leo Ponsonby has stepped into the role as interim President until the AGM in March. On a lovely sunny day in February, 20 members gathered at Philip and Anita Smart s property for a field day. After lunch we sadly said farewell to Shirley, Martin and Hayden Wallace as they move from Mayfield to Motueka. Shirley's knowledge of wool and her work with the shows will be missed in the area. In appreciation for her services, three rose bushes were presented. We went to the sheep yards and looked at Philip and Anita s sheep. Comments were given and as a result, some have been culled. Thank you to Philip and Anita for a good day. March activities are local shows and the AGM. Alison Jones South Canterbury / Waitaki Once again the branch was responsible for the Annual South Island Sale at Waimate in January, and again we were pleased with the positive response from so many quarters regarding its success. As always, we are grateful to the stalwarts behind the scenes whose commitment and generosity are instrumental in making these events run smoothly and pleasantly. We have of course been very busy with the organization of the Conference to be held in Timaru in May. As everyone knows, there is a lot of preliminary work involved, in addition to all the discussions and decisions that need to be made, so that the experience turns out to be a memorable one for all who attend. We are proud of our region, and know that what we have to offer is both worthwhile and of direct interest and benefit to members. Fundraising, thanks to Anne Patterson in particular, has been ongoing for some time, and most members have been involved in one way or another. We are confident that this year s Conference will be both successful and enjoyable, and we look forward to receiving your registrations. South Canterbury and Waitaki have had (and are still having) their share of drought this year. Although we have been lucky with the rain arriving just as despair sets in, there is still a way to go before we can relax and look forward confidently to the products of the forthcoming autumn and winter. Members have continued to be successful with their entries at the various shows, and of course we are proud to be associated with them through our branch. Anna Hobday International Year of Natural Fibres (IYNF) The purpose of the International Year of Natural Fibres (IYNF) 2009 is To raise awareness of natural fibres, to promote efficiency and sustainability of the natural fibres, and to foster an effective international partnership among the various natural fibres industries. Since the 1960s, the use of synthetic fibres has increased, and natural fibres have lost a lot of their market share. The main objective of the International Year of Natural Fibres is to raise the profile of these fibres, to emphasise their value to consumers while helping to sustain the incomes of the farmers. Promoting measures to improve the efficiency and sustainability of production is also an important aspect of the Year. The idea came from a meeting of fibre producing and consuming countries in FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. At the request of FAO, the actual declaration was made by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 20 December The logo can be used by non-profit organizations, as long as the guidelines about its use are adhered to ( Logo_guidelines_1.pdf) A website will be launched in early Information taken from the FAO website: Thanks to Mary Knox for drawing this to our attention. 13 Nomination for a Merit Award for Max Affleck From 1998 to 2000 Max was the Southland Branch delegate for the National Association Council. Max was our National President s number one supporter from 2000 until Max has been busy helping the Southland Branch, but he has been equally busy helping out at National level. Max attended his first National AGM in 1982 when the Southland Branch hosted the Conference in Gore. In 1996 he found himself on the Registered Breeds committee, becoming convenor in 2001, a position he still holds in Max was on the South Island Sale committee from 1997 until 2001, he was convenor of this committee from 1997 until In 2002 he was appointed to the judging committee and is currently still an active member of this committee. Max also served on an ex-gratia review committee. Max Affleck after receiving his Merit Award from the National President, Anita Erskine. (Photo: received from Anita Erskine) The Southland branch of the BCSBANZ has a wonderful gentleman, Max Affleck, who we wish to nominate for a Merit Award. The first time Max s name was in the Southland minute book is in 1985, but he would have been involved with the association since the beginning of the 1980s, when his late wife, Lyn, first became a member. In the years that Max has been giving of his time and effort he has been on a number of committees and has carried out a variety of different jobs at both branch level and also at national level. In the Southland Branch, Max has been on the committee from 1989 until In this time he has filled a number of positions. Max was Vice President from April 1989 until April 1992, when he became the President. He was Southland President until March In his term as President the branch hosted the National AGM and Conference at Queenstown. After Max retired as President he stayed on the Southland Branch Committee. In April 2000 Max stepped forward to help the Southland branch out by taking on the job of branch secretary, or as he liked to be called, the Scribe. He was the branch Scribe until March 2001, when he moved positions and took over the Treasurer s job. He was Treasurer for the branch until he retired from this position in March In 1996 Max joined the judges list in the Flock book of the National Association. In 1999 he became a Registered Breed Inspector. Being a judge and also an inspector for BCSBANZ has taken Max to many different parts of New Zealand. Be it helping a younger or newer member pick out better sheep to keep, or judging at the local shows or a Royal Show, Max has been-there-done that for the Association. Max organised the live sheep display for the World Congress in Christchurch in He gathered together sheep of nearly every coloured breed in New Zealand, and they were penned in a marquee in the grounds of the Chateau on the Park Hotel. This proved to be a highly successful and popular part of the Congress. Max also had the post-congress bus tour visit the Affleck farm at Waikoikoi. Max is a person who any member could go to for help with picking rams or ewes at the South Island sale. Max was willing to help members go through their sheep, so that improvements were always being made in members flocks. The Southland Branch members feel that with Max Affleck having served on the Southland committee as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer; having also served at national level on the South Island Sale, Judging and Registered Breeds Committees and helped out at the 2004 Congress; given his time to judge sheep at a number of different shows around the country and also given his time to help newer and younger members, that he is a very worthy person to receive a Merit Award from the Association that he has given a lot of time and effort to. 14 Imminent Closure of Vital Wool Industry Infrastructure The CSIRO has, for many years, run a small research scour at its Geelong Textiles and Fibre Division. The scour has supplemented income to the CSIRO Geelong division, by taking in small lot commercial contract work when the machine was not being used for research purposes. In many cases this work was the type that larger Australian commercial scours refused to take on, as the lots were either too small for their machines, or contained coloured fibre which they would not touch for fear of contamination issues. The CSIRO scour therefore became an integral part of the development of the Rare Natural Fibre Industries; Cashmere, Alpaca, Mohair and Coloured and Fine wools. All of those Australian produced and Australian processed products made from these fibres, that we see in shops and stalls at craft markets, fairs and farmers markets, will have been scoured at the CSIRO scour before being further processed by small boutique Australian textile processors. The CSIRO is now determined to close down & sell their scouring plant. Representatives from the small boutique Australian textile processors as well as cashmere, alpaca, mohair, coloured wool & ultra fine wool interests, have united in the fight to keep the scour here in Australia; if possible at the CSIRO. The closure of this scour will impact upon thousands of Australian individuals and small businesses as well as a small number of large Australian Companies (who use the scour's research capabilities with pesticides and detergents). The fibre which is contract scoured by the CSIRO scour is made into high value goods, some of which is sold locally but much of which is exported to Europe and other high end markets. One of our members is a fine example of this, his Jemala ultra fine wool products sells luxurious jumpers for 1100 euro in Paris. According to our calculations there should be enough contract scouring work going through the scour for it to be a profitable business. The scour is NOT being closed down due to lack of future demand. The scour is closing down because there has been a massive reduction in funds coming into the CSIRO facility in Geelong over past years. Funds to run the CSIRO Geelong Textile and Fibre Technology division have traditionally come form levy money from wool sales matched by federal government grants. The wool clip has decreased rather dramatically over the past decade due to fewer sheep numbers (drought, low wool prices & Johnes Disease have contributed to reduction in sheep numbers). AWI (Australian Wool Innovations) is the body which currently decides how wool levy money will be spent. In 2007 AWI decided to greatly reduce the amount of levy money used for research & development & instead, in their wisdom, decided to use wool producers levy money to focus upon the marketing of Australian wool. This decision has further reduced research funds to the Geelong CSIRO facility.in order to survive the CSIRO has made a shift in focus from wool & animal fibres to high tech fibres. The Head of the CSIRO Geelong Division is advising Rare Natural Fibre producers to send their fibre offshore for scouring; amazing advice given that the introduction of product embedded carbon is imminent. If scouring is done overseas then it will logically follow that subsequent processing will be done overseas and local small fibre processors will be forced to close through lack of work. So not only will we lose the ability to buy Australian grown and processed natural fibre products, but we will also lose the technical knowledge required to preform processing tasks. Scouring overseas is not a sensible option. Australian fibre industries need the CSIRO scour to remain in Australia and to be accessible for both research and contract work. How can I help to save the CSIRO scour? Write to our government representatives expressing your concern over the closure of the CSIRO scour. You can write your own letter or use the template letter provided, adding to it or changing sections to suit yourself. 15 The ewes are looking a bit scraggy from the lambs jumping all over them, and I'll include a couple of lambs that I might Show, then they will fit the shearing time criteria. Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders Association of New Zealand Magazine Time to get the sheep shorn I was talking to my sister who mentioned that a friend of hers, who lived up this way, is a shearer and is such a nice person, so I thought I would give him a try. His wife answered the phone and took my details about number of sheep, address and phone number etc.. I mentioned my sheep were Gotland. "Oh", she said." Two words (Northern) shearers don't like to hear, Gotland and Merino". For those who are not familiar with the breed, they are a slightly lighter-weight sheep, and with their long skinny legs they are very agile and hate to be tipped up for shearing or other procedures. At shearing the wool tends to get kicked all around the board and they are at greater risk of getting cut. However, Kevin kindly said he would take on the 25 adult and 2 young animals and shearing day duly arrived- and yes, he is a very nice bloke. Shearing started with the usual minor battle to tip the animal over and then keep it in the desired positions, and kicking and struggling spread the fleece about. I wondered if blindfolding would quieten the sheep enough to make the job easier, so sent helpful hubby in to get some stockingette, usually used as support for tired old knees. He cut off a piece about 20cm long and we pulled it over the eyes of the next sheep instant stillness!! The Gotlands are bare-headed so the blindfold didn't get in the way of the blade, apart from the odd nick or two to the cloth at the neck edge. Kevin felt that the blindfold idea was well worthwhile, and put it onto each sheep as he went to catch it in the holding pen. It really did make the job a lot easier. If any animal did start struggling it was nearly always because the blindfold had slipped from the eyes due to the position changes necessary for shearing. The sleeve cut off an old sweatshirt, an old sock, or anything similar would work just as well. I would be concerned about the spread of infection if any of the animals had pink-eye, or a mouth or nasal infection, but that wasn't an issue in this case, so we were pleased with our little project. Thanks to our shearer for being so obliging in trialing this. Lynette Anderson Auckland/Northland Branch 7th International Congress of Colored Sheep September 04th to 09th, 2009 Esteio ñ Gramado / Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil The state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, will be home to the 7th International Congress of Colored Sheep during the 4th to 9th of September The Congress last took place at Christchurch, New Zealand, in The Brazilian Karakul Sheep Breeders Association, present at that last event, succeeded in bringing this new congress to Brazil, supported by other two Brazilian Sheep Breeder Associations, the Crioulos and the Border Leicester. The opening of the 7th International Congress of Colored Sheep will be very attractive as it will take place at the International Fair - EXPOINTER near the state capital, the biggest agribusiness show of the south of Brazil, where the participants will have the opportunity to appreciate the best of sheep as well as other Brazilian livestock genetics, and farm machinery. At this event the participants may take part in the wool workshops and handcraft competition, and assist the woollen outfits fashion show. The Congress will continue at the state hilly country, called Serra Ga cha, at the touristic Gramado and Canela counties, where some farms will be visited, and a farm day will take place. Workshops on History of sheep, Genetics and Preservation, Breeds, Animal Health and Production, Sheep Products (wool, fiber and skin), Marketing and Business and Handcraft techniques will be in the program. Tourism pre and post event also will be offered to the participants and their companions, as Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost state of Brazil, having its own beautiful places, bordering the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, famous for its beaches, and also having an international border with Uruguay and Argentina. English will be the official language with simultaneous translation into Portuguese.
