1 Inner Wheel Club of South Wairarapa Chartered 16 May 1993 June 2018 Newsletter President: Rosemary Newton Ph: Secretary: Liz Poynter Ph: Treasurer Kathleen Rushworth Ph: Hello Everyone Well, here we are again, back to editing our IWSW Newsletter. I enjoyed being President for a year but I have to say I am not missing the phone ringing so frequently. I have taken the liberty of attaching my President s Report for those of you who did not make the changeover/anniversary event on 16 May. As you will see the Club worked really hard and had a pretty successful year. We are even able to plant some trees at the Greytown Soldiers Memorial Park, and have ordered 6 Matai and 6 smaller trees, to fill a space near the fence- line on Kuratiwhiti St. This will be under Alisoun Werry s supervision and guidance and take place around 3 July. 2 If you were unable to come to our Changeover/Anniversary, you missed out on wonderful food, company and the Harmonies who entertained us with a great range of songs. Even though they were missing a couple of their members, you couldn t tell, they did so well, even getting a mention on the Brac and Bow Facebook and web pages. We were very privileged to have a number of the Charter members, Marion Patchett from Kapiti, Mary Mason from Rotary and the Mayor, Viv Napier present as well. Robin spoke about our origins and how we branched out from the Wellington club, following a meeting at Turkey Red on 17 th February On 16 May the same year, we became a chartered club. Robin was the Charter President and Rose the newly appointed treasurer. And their dinners cost them only $8! Two more Honoured Active Awards were made. our congratulations to both President Rosemary Newton and Doreen Badger. Two honoured Active awardees, our Charter President, one outgoing President and one incoming President enjoying the occasion. On a sadder note, the club sends its condolences to Rosemary whose husband, John, passed away peacefully on 6 June. Our thoughts are with her and her family at this time. Bereavement while being President must be a big ask, so I am sure we club members will support her in her presidency in any way we can. We do wish Rosemary the very best for her, believe it or not, third time as President. Her dedication to Inner Wheel is second to none, and her Honoured Active Award, so well deserved. And here are a few words from President Rose, written about a week prior to her bereavement.. 3 Anniversary. What a great year we had under Anne s leadership! Not an easy one to follow! She really did lead us into challenging but very worthwhile new territories. This year the Inner Wheel theme is Empower and Evolve with the social project being an emphasis on Caring for Women and Girls and I would like my emphasis to be Charity Begins at Home - that we look at where we can help most in our local and Wairarapa community. I am looking forward to another great year as your President and welcome any suggestions you might have. Yours in Inner Wheel Friendship, Rose. Harton Inner Wheel, UK Another important development is our sisterhood with Harton, South Tyneside, England. From now on we will be sending our newsletters to Harton, and we urge anyone from South Wairarapa travelling to the UK and in that vicinity to make contact with them. This will help us to get to know them and that part of the world. Similarly, we hope Harton IW will follow suit. Thank you for sending us the brochure about South Tyneside, which we will circulate at our next meeting. We look forward to receiving newsletters from Harton IW. 4 Story of the month The Old Lady and the Motorcycle. A customs officer noticed that every day an old lady crossed the border on a shiny- new red motorcycle with a large bag tied to the rear. Upon noticing this, he soon stopped her and asked her what was inside the bag. "It's only sand for my flower vases", she said. The officer didn't believe [her]. Ordered her to open it, and it was only sand. But the officer, after letting her go, realised that maybe she brought sand on one day and jewels or watches or whatever the next day. Next day she was there again. The officer stopped her and searched the bag. It was only sand again. "But, maybe, "thought the officer, "she waits a couple of days before bringing the goods". But the next the day it was only sand again. The officer was undeterred and kept searching her sandbag for months. It was always only sand. No smuggling scheme could profit with such a long interval between actual cargo being brought in. She should have gone broke months ago, but still he searched. One day, feeling defeated, the customs officer told the lady: "I promise you over the dead body of my dear mother that I will turn a blind eye on whatever you are smuggling (and for Jesus' sake I know you ARE smuggling something) if you just tell me what it is. I totally quit trying to figure it out. Tell me, what is it?" The old lady was unsure: "Are you sure? Will you still turn a blind eye to my smuggling?" "May God strike me with lightning the day I stop you again. Please tell me what is it that you are smuggling every single day since I have been at this control post." "Okay, son. I'll tell you, because I am quitting the job anyway, having paid my debts with the profits. I'll tell you, it is true that I have been smuggling something from the other country every day for months." "And what is it then?" "Red motorcycles, son..." "I hate you, madam!
