You have manned the club almost 24 hours a day in one capacity or another. Your generosity overwhelms and inspires me, and I strive to be a better person because of the example I see in you! My yellow vest seems to have taken on a golden hue; a beacon of hope and compassion. Thank you, each and every one of you for showing me the true essence of why we are Lions! WE SERVE! BUT WAIT---THERE IS MORE The ugly T word has surfaced again! (Think Music Man here) Capital T that rhymes with G that stands for GOOD! Yes, it s the TACO word! Lion Debbie will continue to serve tacos through the first Monday in November as we anticipate many more Christmas baskets will be needed this season. Trick or Treat Street on October 31 will also see many more goblins as this event brings joy to young and old alike, and we need some happiness in our foothills! Free hot dogs and a bag of candy should do the trick! Then we move right into our November Crab Feed to put some $$$ back in our community account. Raffle prizes are greatly appreciated by Chairlady Lion Susie!
3 Editor s Message Treasurer s Report Although it was with a heavy heart that I returned from the Cascade fire evacuation to find so many in Loma Rica had lost their homes and property, I was astonished by the countless stories of courage, resilience and kindness throughout our community and beyond. For some there were harrowing escapes. Individuals fearlessly risked their lives to notify neighbors as the firestorm engulfed their streets. Some left with nothing but the clothes on their backs, literally running for their lives. As the fires had subsided, there were heartwarming stories of individuals who, steadfast in their mission, tended to animals whose owners were unable to return. People communicated with one another through social media to offer assistance with animals, and donations began to arrive at local churches. Once evacuations were lifted, the Foothill Lions motto We Serve went full throttle the club becoming a community hub for emergency services, collecting and distributing donations, and providing meals to the community. It became a refuge for many who needed to talk, cry, and begin to come to terms with what had taken place. The fortitude of this community is nothing short of amazing. Loma Rica has illustrated a strength of character I have been so very humbled to witness. Not only do we belong to a club that serves, we are part of a community that serves. And just as the legendary phoenix rose from the ashes, our community will rise stronger and more beautiful than before. Lion Laurie High I encourage all members to submit pictures and articles for the Foothill Lions bulletin. Let me hear your ROAR! 4 November 2017 Lion Birthdays Ralph Farrell Leonard Lake Linda Saala Scott Schoue Charles Taylor Susie Trundy Lion Jerry Harger won the 50/50 at the October 5th meeting. Congratulations Jerry! 50/50 Winner! Please join us for your Birthday dinner celebration to be held the during the first General Meeting of each month. Birthday dinners for the Birthday Lions will be FREE! In Memory of Lion David Culp Lion David Hard Hat Culp was born on December 19, Dave perished in the recent Cascade Fire in the Loma Rica/ Browns Valley area in October He would have been 77 years old in December. Lion Dave joined the Loma Rica Foothill Lions club on September 4, 2008 and attended a lot of the functions. He was sponsored by Lion Delores Scott. Dave was a very private person who didn t say a lot about his past. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U. S. Army during the war as a Warrant Officer and a pilot of helicopters. He had a tough time getting back into life after returning from Vietnam. He lost a very good friend in the war and it hit him very hard. Lion Dave was a member of the Operating Engineers and worked construction for many years. His friends remember him as a quiet and troubled man. He lived at Ray Bradley s place for many years helping around the feed store. Lion David is survived by a brother, John Culp, of Yuba City, CA. Rest in Peace David may your next journey be a happier one. Submitted by Lion Sally White Cane Awareness White Cane Safety Day is an opportunity to increase awareness about the white cane. This signifies that the pedestrian using it is blind or visually impaired, alerts motorists of the need to exercise special caution and provide the user the right of way, and symbolizes the independence, confidence and skills of the person who is using it. On November 18th, several of our Foothill Lions will be stationed at various locations in our community to receive donations and pass out white canes to assist in increasing this awareness. Do you know of any Lions who could use a bit of sunshine? Please do not hesitate to reach out to our Sunshine Chairman, Lion Diana Wheeler at She d love to hear from you! Several of our members lost homes and property in the Cascade fire last month Lions Susan and Jim DeGraff, Lion Dave Thomas and his wife Liz, and Rex and Joni Patterson. Others had significant damage as well, making their homes uninhabitable Sally Carter and Korin Berryhill. We are thinking of you all as you work to rebuild, and we are here for you whenever and whatever your needs may be. Please do not hesitate to reach out!
5 The night of October 8 the north wind whipped and twirled at better than 40 mph and the fires started. Bangor, Browns Valley and Loma Rica were hit hard. Over 130 homes were lost in Loma Rica. To those who lost their homes, our prayers go out to you. Please know we are in this for the long haul, we are here for you, so please do not hesitate to ask for anything! During this disastrous time I have witnessed the greatness of human beings - People caring for each other. Our Lion members have been at the club EVERYDAY serving food, delivering food, and handing out supplies from the LIONS DISASTER TRAILER. Foothill Lions has been working with FEMA and Yuba County OES officials schedules so that the community can get the help and answers they need. Lions have been working around the clock to get WIFI to the clubhouse, as well as dumpsters, and storage for goods long term. Donations of food, clothing, water, cash, and gift certificates have been donated and given out. Critter food donations and deliveries. And then an ugly little bug starts worming its way into my brain as I suspect greed and see people taking advantage of the generosity and kindness of the giving. I think of the book GONE WITH THE WIND and some of the memorable characters and their reactions to devastation. Scarlett O Hara, a spoiled greedy brat who was forced into fight or flight mode. She was strong and hard, a survivalist, and used everyone and everything so that she would survive. Rhett Butler, a scoundrel on the outside with a big heart who had a knack for getting things done, getting supplies where they were needed, and he never took himself too seriously, but always delivered. Melanie Hamilton Wilkes, a kind soul, nonjudgmental, full of charity and grace. Forgiving and angelic. Although I have the traits of all three characters, it is Melanie that tempers that nasty suspicious bug eating at my mind. At the end of each day I hope it is Melanie Hamilton Wilkes who lets me see the good in people and not judge the ones who take advantage, for they must have their own demons and God will sort it all out-----not me! Submitted by President Linda Saala
