It s one more way to stay connected. We, the members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura, united by our liberal religious tradition, seek truths, and meaning, and commit to right action. We will nurture our congregation and carry our principles forth to better ourselves, our community, and our planet. To these purposes, we pledge our hearts and hands, our minds and means.

2 Minister s Column It s hard to believe that we re coming on a year together. There has been so much goodness and many things accomplished. A new ministry is full of changes. It s a time of transition, which has its challenges. We are on the brink of one of the biggest changes of all our beloved Becky Burnham will be retiring in a month. She has been the beating heart of this congregation for more than a decade. She knows every nook and cranny in the church. She knows where things go, where to find things when they re not where they re supposed to be. She keeps track of stacks of numbers. It sometimes feels like she gets tasks done five minutes before I even ask. Becky is a bright spirit who brings much humor and even playfulness to the world. Though I grumble about it sometimes, she almost always has something sweet to offer a bowl of candy at her desk, a clear Christmas ornament filled with candy. I treasure the sea glass necklaces she makes, and find myself trolling the beaches for tempest-tossed glass to keep her supplies fully stocked. By the time you are reading this we will have a new person hired and Becky will be training her or him. This is simply the kind of dedication and thoroughness she has always brought to her work at UUCV. I wish there were a way to download her institutional memory directly into the mind of our new administrator. We will miss her greatly, and we ll even feel a bit lost at first. We will find our way, in part because Becky has set up clear and efficient processes and procedures. As we will be welcoming two new staff people our new administrator on July 1 and our new DRE on August 1 we have some big thank you's to express. So be sure to come to church on June 4 when we will formally thank and acknowledge Becky and Acting DRE Joyce Faber for their service to the church. Neither of them wants any particular fuss made of course but I ve explained that we need to fuss over them at least a bit. We need to offer them our heart-felt thanks as much (or more) than they need to be thanked. It will truly be a new era in the history of the church. Both of their memories and their gifts will be a part of any success we have going forward. I wouldn t have made it through my first year here in Ventura without Becky s and Joyce s hard work and unwavering support. So much love to you both, Rev. Dana Welcome New Members by Beverly Jordan, Membership Manager Peggy Anders, Aubrey Jordan, Tanner Linden, Helen McPherson, Robert March, Mia Michaels, Brian Mitchell and Alan Peters! We are better together! News from Stewardship Team by Yukio Okano The Unitarian Universalist Church of Ventura is happy to announce two of our members, Krista Mendelsohn and Bob Newman, have made most generous donations to the church. Both Krista and Bob have been actively involved in church activities. Krista s gift of $20,000 was given in memory of her father, Jack Pease. Krista s donation will be used towards the rebuilding of the church s outdoor playground to create an Outdoor Sanctuary. Plans for this wonderful project will soon be shared with the congregation. Bob served as a member of the search committee to select a new Director of Religious Education. His gift of $20,000 has been designated to further develop children s religious education, especially to build programs for teenagers. Bob's gift will also be used to help the new Director of Religious Education move and settle into her new office. We thank Krista and Bob for their deep generosity and demonstration of love and support for the values and work of this congregation. ADULT PROGRAMS by Beverly Jordan, Membership Manager The newly formed Adult Programs Coordinating Team (APCT) includes myself, Xenia Young and Annette Gale. APCT oversees both the Spiritual Growth Programs and The Adult Programs. If you are interested in facilitating an adult program at the church, contact us for an application. On June 11 following our Sunday Service we will be holding our Annual Meeting. By now you should have received a packet in the mail containing informational materials on the issues we will be addressing and voting upon at the meeting. This is our opportunity to fulfill the Fifth Principle and consider in the process that this action is part of one s own spiritual practice as a Unitarian Universalist. In our society voting is an event that comes up often enough that many people do not even bother with the process. They think their vote does not matter or others will make the right decisions. On another level voting rights are under attack and it is all anyone can do to preserve them. Whenever you have the opportunity to have your voice heard please take the time to be informed about the issues and speak out with your vote. Much of the Annual Meeting is routine and yet essential to our Mission. There is a budget to be voted on by the congregation. The budget comes to us after having been prepared by a sub-committee. It was reviewed by the Finance committee and previewed by the Board for recommendations. After all of that it was then revised and finalized by the sub-committee and Finance Committee. Finally the Board gave its approval for presentation to the congregation. Our budget represents many hours of work by people who have thought deeply about the future of our church. It is easy to get caught up with details and minutia with a budget. I ask that you trust that portion of the process to those we have entrusted to do the preparing of the budget. Consider instead the big picture. Does this budget help us live out our values? There is a Slate of candidates to vote upon for positions on the Board, on the Leadership Committee and on the Endowment and Memorial Fund Committee. Even though these positions are filled by a democratic process, facilitated by the work of the Leadership Committee, the folks who will fill the vacancies are just like you. They are dedicated and willing volunteers who will be trying to help the UUCV fulfill its Mission and Vision. They deserve our support. We will be voting on a change to the By-Laws. This request is the result of work undertaken earlier in the year by the sub-committee on Major Maintenance. Based on that work the Ministry and Operations Team drafted a By-Law change that permits the Board to authorize projects to be funded with money from the Major Maintenance Fund. Currently there is a 2% cap on the Board s authority to spend any money without a vote of the congregation. A cap on discretionary spending makes sense for the Operational Budget of the church but not for the ongoing and repetitive maintenance of our facility. We are asking that the 2% cap not apply to the Major Maintenance Fund. These are only some of the issues we will be deciding as we prepare to begin the year. Thank you everyone for all you do to make the UUCV the beacon of light and prophetic voice that it is. See you at the Annual Meeting. Living in Paradise, Bryan Buck, President June On Common Ground UU Church of Ventura

4 Social Action Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness. Seneca Social Action News Edith Ball, Chair Ventura County Home Share Ventura County manages a home share program linking people with an extra room in their house to people needing housing. Simply put, HomeSharing is an arrangement where two or more unrelated people share a dwelling, each having her or his private space and sharing certain common areas. Both the provider and seeker of housing are screened by the Agency. Empty nesters widowers, widows, or folks with extra rooms may be interested in co-housing. The housing seekers could be college students, recently relocated professionals, newly divorced people, people needing low-income housing, etc. Some providers charge rent and other providers arrange for housing in exchange for pet/house sitting, maintenance chores, help with utility costs, after school care, etc. Some situations may even allow companion animals. This program is not intended to provide housing in lieu of medical assistance. Sign up for the program at Ventura County Home Share at ventura.org/vcaaa/homeshare or 805/ Monthly Dinner for Riverhaven Thank you to all who have contributed to the monthly dinner UUCV provides for Riverhaven residents. June Inreach/Outreach June 4: River Haven Transitional Housing Community Funds help with expenses the budget doesn t cover at this supportive community where homeless individuals can live in harmony and learn to overcome obstacles preventing them from maintaining housing. June 11: Ventura Homeless Prevention Fund Funds prevent families and individuals from becoming homeless due to a one-time event such as accident or illness and pay the rent so a temporary loss of income or unexpected expense does not result in loss of housing. June 18: LUYV: Park Outreach Team Funds make it possible for the team to continue outreach in the homeless community in Ventura s parks. June 25: UUCV Inreach/Outreach fund Funds assist those in our own local and church community when the need for help arises. Thanks for your donations, Anne Escobedo May Inreach/Outreach News What we spend, we lose. What we keep will be left for others. What we give away will be ours forever. David McGee In late April and early May your donations went to help families that care for foster and kinship children, homeless who live in our parks, individuals and families in danger of losing their housing, and those in our local and church community who need assistance. The congregation collected $664 for Heart 2 Heart, which will increase the supply of furniture items this Ventura County nonprofit has available to foster and kinship families who shop for items they desperately need to provide for the children placed in their care. The Park Outreach Team received $538 to allow these volunteers to continue outreach in the homeless community in Ventura s parks. The amount of $610 went to Ventura Homeless Prevention Fund to be used to prevent Ventura families and individuals from falling into homeless because of a one-time event such as an accident or illness. Funds pay the rent so a temporary loss of income or unexpected expense does not result in eviction. The offering of $1,163 was collected for the UUCV Inreach/Outreach fund which is available when need arises within our local and church community. June On Common Ground UU Church of Ventura

Two young Chicago women with troubled marriages take a road trip to New Mexico to work as belly dancers. Director Rachid Bouchareb. Closed captioned. June 9 In A Better World, 2010, R for violent content. Danish with English subtitles. This is a complex work, whose whole, including themes of peace and non-violence, is far greater than its parts. The basic plot is a familiar story: a new student is bullied. Another boy, also an outcast, helps the bullied boy to enact revenge against his main tormentor. The film s message examines the perceived necessity of violence vs the strength to walk away from volatile situations. Won Best Foreign Film Oscar. Stars Trine Dyrholm and Mikael Persbrandt. Director Susanne Bier. June 16 A Dog s Purpose, 2017, PG The premise, which sounds preposterous, is the story of a dog being reincarnated with different owners and families. In fact, it is an uplifting, beautifully acted, well-told story about what is important in life. Stars Dennis Quaid. Director Lasse Hallström. Closed captioned. June 23 Monsoon Wedding, 2001, R for language. The passionate nature of the Punjabi community in New Delhi is in full bloom during the organized chaos of the five days preceding the celebration of a wedding. June 30 What s Eating Gilbert Grape, 1993, PG-13. 8 Committee on Ministry by Gary Zinik T he purpose of this article is (1) explain the function of the Committee on Ministry (COM), (2) contrast it with the former Ministerial Relations Committee (MRC) that it replaces, and (3) inform members who we are and how we can be of service. These ideas come from the book Moving on From Church Folly Lane, by Rev. Robert Latham. The COM is comprised of church members who are appointed by the Minister and approved by the Board to serve a 2 year term. We meet monthly with the Minister to discuss church life and the health of the congregation. The COM replaces the Ministerial Relations Committee, which assumed the minister and other church leaders owned the congregation and its mission. In some churches the MRC served a public relations function to preserve the relationship between the minister and the congregation. It was therefore vulnerable to triangulation and an us versus them trap that could lead to taking sides and creating divisions. In contrast, the COM is devoted to the fulfillment of the religious mission of the entire congregation. The new COM model assumes the congregation owns its mission and ministry, and its purpose is to promote that mission to both the church community and the world at large. The COM is concerned with the spiritual health of the entire congregation. The Latin phrase Pars Pro Toto captures that wisdom, which means the parts exist for the sake of the whole. This wisdom defines the COM s existence and purpose. We serve an ombudsman function to support, advise, and problem-solve church issues and concerns. We are here to listen and mediate when disputes arise in the congregation, always with the aim to uphold our Covenant of Right Relations and increase commitment to our Beloved Community. The COM is also charged with conducting periodic assessments of the congregation and the minister to keep a finger on the pulse of the church s goals, needs, and concerns. This brings us to the question: What is the religious mission of this congregation? We ask you to ponder that question and at some point we may re-visit our Mission Statement to answer it. Please contact us if we can be of service. Kitty Merrill, , kitty_merrill@hotmail.com Dorothy Wootan, , dorothywootan@yahoo.com Gary Zinik, , gzinik@gmail.com Committee News Finance Facts from the Finance Committee May 2017 Our Celebration Sunday service, April 26 completed this year s annual pledge campaign.the celebration was for your generosity with your time and money for our congregational lives. This is the first year in many that we had a Stewardship Team, led by Maura Raffensperger with much help from Reverend Dana Worsnop, Kappy Paulson, Yukio Okano, and the Kitchen crew and other helpers. It was a great party! The financial results of your participation generated a net increase in annual pledges of 4.8%, or nearly $15,510 in increased annual pledges as of May 1, 2017 compared with annual pledges on record as of February 28, If needed, you can change your future pledge amount at any time by notifying Becky Burnham, UUCV Office Manager, at 805/ , ext.100, or office@uuventura.org. You can make one-time donations or set up automatic pledge payments at Click Give at the top right of the home page, then follow the instructions for single or scheduled payments, or contact David Smith at 805/ or davidpaseo@verizon.net. Membership Committee by Gudrun Eastham During the recent New Member Celebration held in Berg Hall, eight people signed the Membership Book, shared their views about what joining our church means, met several church Board members, received permanent name tags, enjoyed sweet treats and fruit, and prepared for the New Member Recognition Ceremony held during the May 7 Worship Service. The Recognition Ceremony was especially meaningful and memorable for all attendees because the children were again invited to stay and witness new members ceremoniously lighting candles and hearing the new member litany. I thank each of you who participated in helping to launch this recent new members group, facilitating and speaking at the Pathway to Membership workshops and New Member Chats, setting up/taking down furniture, bringing refreshments, cleaning up, photographing new members, braiding blue ribbon leis, and making visitors and new members feel welcomed. Look at the New Member bulletin board in Berg Hall where photos and brief bios are posted. Chat with our new members, who are wearing blue and white name tags just like you as well as blue ribbon leis, and, if being on the Greeter Team has ever interested you...now's your chance to volunteer to perform welcoming tasks before, during and after the Sunday Worship Service.
