2 The Passover Feast of Redemption Tower of David Jerusalem The First Passover Now the LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man s need you shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it. Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted in fire its head with its legs and its entrails. You shall let none of it remain until morning, and what remains of it until morning you shall burn with fire. And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD s Passover. For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. So this day shall be to you a memorial; and you shall keep it as a feast to the LORD throughout your generations. You shall keep it as a feast by an everlasting ordinance. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. On the first day there shall be a holy convocation, and on the seventh day there shall be a holy convocation for you. No manner of work shall be done on them; but that which everyone must eat that only may be prepared by you. So you shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this same day I will have brought your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as an everlasting ordinance. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twentyfirst day of the month at evening. For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land. 3 SEDER Plate Symbolism: Shank bone נטויה :זרוע The shank is the strongest bone of the animal and symbolizes the strong hand of God by which the Israelites were delivered from bondage in Egypt. The shank of a lamb is typically used; also symbolizing the Passover sacrifice. If a lamb shank is not available, the leg of a chicken may be used. Bitter herbs מרור (some use lettuce, others horseradish or both): A reminder of the bitterness of the Israelites in slavery under Pharaoh. Roasted egg :ביצה (hard boiled is often used): The food of mourners. As in many Jewish occasions, here too an element of mourning is added to commemorate the destruction of the Holy Temple of God. Hyssop כרפס (usually substituted by parsley or celery): Leafy branches the Israelites used for spreading the blood of the Passover Lamb on their doorpost (Exodus 12:22). Vinegar חומץ (salt water is also used): The tears of affliction shed in Egypt. Charoset :חרוסת A spreadable mixture of dates, chopped apples, nuts, and wine or grape juice a reminder of the mortar mix used by the Israelites to make brick. Matzah מצה : The bread of affliction. Bread without yeast which the Israelites were instructed to prepare before the final deliverance from slavery. It was to be taken and eaten along the way. 3

The house is cleaned and all remains of bread, cake and food containing yeast or leavening are removed. Traditionally, the last bit of leaven is ceremonially burned; at this point, the seven days of purification begin. Recite as the last leaven is removed or burned: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to remove the leaven. Had Lakat Hanerot Lighting Candles Lighting the Candles The first day of the Passover celebration is considered a holy convocation a Sabbath day (Leviticus 23:3 & 7) a day where we shall do no regular work. Sabbath candles are therefore lit before the Passover Seder begins. Woman of the home recites as she lights the candles: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and allowed us to light (the sabbath and) the festival candles. Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made (Genesis 1:31-2:3) On weekdays begin here: These are the feasts of the LORD, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the LORD s Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall have a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it. But you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD for seven days. The seventh day shall be a holy convocation; you shall do no customary work on it (Leviticus 23:4-8). Continue. Pour the first cup and say the blessing of Kadush: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, The Creator of the fruit of the vine. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has chosen us from among all nations and sanctified us with your commandments. You have lovingly given us, Lord our God, (the Sabbaths for rest) times for gladness, festivals and set seasons for rejoicing (this Sabbath day and) this day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the season of our Liberation (in Love) and a holy assembly as a memorial of the exodus from Egypt; for You have chosen us and sanctified us above all peoples, You have given us the heritage (in love and favor) in joy and gladness your holy (Sabbath and) festivals. Blessed are you, O Lord who hallows (the Sabbath and) Israel and the festive seasons. On Sabbath the following is added: Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, The Creator of the light of the fire. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who makes a distinction between sacred and profane, and between light and darkness, and between Israel and all other peoples, and between the seventh day and the six days of work. Blessed are You Lord, who distinguishes between holy and holy. Continue. URHATZ Washing Wash hands without saying blessing. KARPAS Parsley Leader recites blessing. Everyone dips a sprig of parsley in the vinegar (or salt water) and eats. YACHATZ Splitting Leader breaks the middle matzah in half, leaving one half between the two whole ones, then hides the larger half as the Afikoman. After the meal, the Afikoman is found, divided, and partaken in the Tzafoon portion. MAGID Telling Narration of the Exodus story begins. The matzah are uncovered, the ceremonial dish is raised and the leader recites the following: This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Whoever is hungry let him come and eat; whoever is in need let him come and celebrate the Passover. Now we are here, but next year may we be in the land of Israel. Now we are slaves, but next year we will be free men. Second cup is poured: Here the child asks (as he recites it is a song): Mah Nishtana? How is this night different from any other night? On any other night we eat leavened and unleavened bread, why on this night only unleavened bread? On any other night we eat any kind of herbs, why tonight only bitter herbs? On any other night we do not dip our herbs into anything even once, why on this night do we do it twice? On any other night we eat either sitting upright or reclining, why on this night do we all recline? The response is the telling of the Exodus story: 7

We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt; but God took us out from there, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. And had the Holy One, blessed be He, not taken our ancestors out of Egypt--we, our children, and our children s children would still be enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Therefore, even if we are all wise, all men of understanding, all well versed in the Torah--we would still be commanded to tell about the Exodus from Egypt; and whoever tells about it at length is worthy of praise. Once Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon were all celebrating the Seder in B nai B rak. And they told the story of the Exodus from Egypt the entire night, until their students came and told them, Our masters, the time has come for the morning recital of Shema`! Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah said to them, Behold, I am a man seventy years old, yet I never understood why the story of the departure from Egypt should be related at night, until ben Zoma explained: It is written, so you may remember all the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Egypt (Deuteronomy 16:3). The days of your life, would have meant the days only, but, all indicates the nights also. The Sages further maintain that the days of your life, refers to this world while all the days of your life, is taken to include the days of the Messiah. Blessed be be the place, blessed be He. Blessed be He who gave the Torah to his people Israel. The Torah speaks of four sons one wise, one wicked, one simple, and one who does not know how to ask. The Four Sons: The wise one, what does the wise son ask? What do the testimonies, and the statutes and the judgments mean that the LORD our God commanded you? (Deuteronomy 6:20). So you tell him about the laws of Pesach, that one may not eat anything whatsoever after the Pesach sacrifice. The wicked one, what does the wicked son ask? What does this service mean to you? (Exodus 12:26). To you, and not to himself he excludes himself and thus denies God. Refute his argument and tell him: This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt. For me, not for him, implying that if he had been there, he would not have been redeemed. The simple one, what does the simple one ask? What is this? Tell him, With a powerful hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of slavery (Exodus 13:14). As for the one who does not ask, you must begin for him, as it is written: You shall tell your son on that day, saying, It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt (Exodus 13:8). 8

And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward shall they come out with great possessions (Genesis 15:13-14). And this promise has been with our fathers and with us in every generation. Many have risen up against us to destroy us; in every generation. But the Holy One, blessed be He, delivers us from their hand. Go out and learn what Laban the Aramean wanted to do to our father Jacob! Pharaoh condemned only the newborn male children to death, but Laban looked to destroy our whole people. Rabbi Eliezer asked: How do we know that each individual plague which the Holy One, blessed be He, brought upon the Egyptians in Egypt consisted of four plagues? It is said: He cast on them the fierceness of His anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, by sending a band of angels of wrath among them (Psalm 78:49): According to this, each plague included anger, - one; wrath, - two; indignation and trouble, - three; and sending a band of angles of wrath - four. Thus you must now say that in Egypt they were struck by forty plagues, and at the Sea they were stricken by two hundred plagues. Rabbi Akiva asked: How do we know that each individual plague which the Holy One, blessed be He, brought upon the Egyptians in Egypt consisted of five plagues? It is said: It is said: He cast on them the fierceness of His anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, by sending angels of destruction among them (Psalm 78:49). If He had lead us into the land of Israel, and not built the Temple, it would have been enough! How greatly the goodness of the Almighty has been doubled and redoubled towards us! He has brought us out of Egypt, and carried out judgments against the Egyptians, and smote their gods, and slew their first-born, and gave us their wealth, and divided the sea for us, and took us through it on dry land, and drowned our oppressors, and supplied our needs in the dessert for forty years, and fed us with manna, and gave us the Sabbath, and brought us near to Mount Sinai, and gave us the Torah, and brought us into the land of Israel and built for us the Temple to atone for all our sins. Rabbi Gamliel used to say: Whoever does not say the following three things on Pesach has not fulfilled his obligation: The Paschal Lamb, the unleavened bread and the bitter herbs. Leader points to the shank bone without lifting it and says: Why did our fathers eat the Paschal offering, during the days when the Temple existed? Because the Holy One, blessed be He, passed over the houses of our fathers in Egypt, as it is written, you shall say, It is the Passover sacrifice of the LORD, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians, and delivered our households. 18 צ פו ן - ב ר ך Tzafoon-Barech A fikoman& Grace Traditionally, after the meal, the children are sent to find the Afikoman, which was hidden during Yachatz portion. It is then brought to the leader, who gives a token gift to the finder. The leader then divides the Afikoman and a small portion (the size of an olive) is given to all participants. It is to be eaten in the reclining position and should be done before midnight. This is the Tzafoon portion of the Seder. Following this is the traditional Barech (grace) portion, as it is written: When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you (Deuteronomy 8:10). The Messianic Passover As part of the Traditional Seder order, the children are now sent to find the Afikoman, which was hidden earlier. The leader of the Seder then redeems that piece for a small token. The Messianic Passover is divinely attached to the traditional elements. In the Yachatz portion, observed before the meal, we pulled out the middle of the three matzah. The matzah, which is by nature pierced, was also broken, then wrapped in cloth and hidden. The Messiah, hung on the cross between two sinners on Golgotha. His body was pierced, then wrapped in linen and hidden in the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem. His resurrection brought forth our redemption. The Third cup is now poured. The Israelites were instructed to choose the sacrifice in preparation for Passover. In the same way, God Himself chose the perfect way to redeem mankind with the sacrifice of His own Son, Who entered Jerusalem, by His own will for that purpose, in preparation for the Messiah s Passover. Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: Hosanna! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel! Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt (John 12:1, 12-15). The Israelites were instructed to cleanse their homes from leaven before Passover. In the same way, Jesus cleansed His Father s house before His Passover. So they came to Jerusalem. Then Jesus went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. And He would not allow anyone to carry wares through the temple. Then He taught, saying to them, Is it not written, My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a Den of thieves (Mark 11:15-17). 18

19 The Passover was observed; the meal was eaten; and a whole new dimension was added to the Passover. When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. Then He said to them, With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God. Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this and divide it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you (Luke 22:14-20). We are now ready to celebrate The Lord s Passover to its complete meaning. The last cup of the Seder is the cup of Elijah. This cup is partaken in anticipation of Elijah s return. Elijah in the Hebrew scripture is considered the forerunner of the Messiah. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers (Malachi 4:5-6). It is tradition that at this point in the Seder, a young child is sent to the door of the house to look in anticipation for the beginning of the Messianic Era, as should be manifested by the return of Elijah. Should Elijah appear at this point, he is welcomed to take the seat of honor reserved for him. Should he not, we continue to await his return, which will preceed the return of the Messiah s reign. Recite the blessing over the cup of Elijah, in anticipation of his soon return. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, The Creator of the fruit of the vine. Drink in reclining position.
