1 שירים של פסח Compiled for the 2007 HRSF Seder by Mauro Cutz Braunstein 06 Introduction This compilation of the music of Pesach took many hours tt I could ve spent working, sleeping, or playing Final Fantasy 4, and it s intended to help those who don t know how to sing the songs and blessings. This set of people includes me, of course, so this required several trips to the music library and some use of I hope tt some of the people making use of this document are nonjews who want to experience a seder, and those people ve a much smaller cnce of knowing Hebrew; those people should find this document especially helpful. For those people, however, a pronunciation guide is in order. I took the transliteration directly from the Hebrew text. There are no diphthongs in the Hebrew pronunciation I use, so each vowel s its own sound: a as in part, e as in bet or bit, i as in leaf, o as in pole, and u as in poof. The apostrophe is generally an e like in bit, or sometimes just a voiced consonant. If you see a vowel followed by a y or i, the y or i is meant to be a consonant, and it shouldn t cnge the sound of the vowel. For example, if you see lay, you should pronounce it like you d pronounce the English lie, not the English lay. The sound ch is made by making an h sound with your throat (bring the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth). The sound tz sounds like lots. Tt about does it, I think. few notes: there are two dir Hu s because one s the whole acrostic (I condensed it to three verses to save y all the pain) and the other is just awesome. Both should be sung because they re both cool. lso, I chose the four most common verses of Dayenu, because even if I d chosen only three and d not chosen a fourth, it would ve been enough. Mah Nishtanah is partly in compound meter because it sounds better tt way, dammit. I wrote a fourpart men; tt should be read in soprano rather tn tenor clef men should sing it an octave up. Finally, a careful reading will give you the right way to sing Cd Gadya and Mi Yodea, but it s to be RELLY careful because the way I wrote it is pretty confusing. It s not confusing to sing, just to read wt I wrote. Donald Knuth wrote a paper on repetitive songs tt may be relevant; search for The Complexity of Songs. Cg sameach, and l snah baah biruslayim!
