1 Today s chuckle: This explains so much. Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what's known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale. It's not aging, it's that crazy door! Whew! Thank goodness for scientific studies. THE OATH Scripture reading: Matthew 5:33-37 P.M. SOLOMON S WISDOM Today s recipe: Ingredients: CHICKEN SPAGHETTI 1 whole raw chicken, cut into 8 pieces 1 pound thin spaghetti, broken into 2-inch pieces 2 1/2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar 1/4 cup finely diced green bell pepper 1/4 cup finely diced red bell pepper 1 teaspoon seasoned salt 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Two 10 3/4-ounce cans cream of mushroom soup 1 medium onion, finely diced Salt and freshly ground black pepper Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the chicken pieces to the boiling water and boil for a few minutes, then return the heat to medium-low and simmer, 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the chicken and 2 cups of the chicken cooking broth from the pot. When the chicken is cool, remove the skin and pick out the meat (a mix of dark and white) to make 2 generous cups. Cook the spaghetti in the same chicken cooking broth until al dente. Do not overcook. When the spaghetti is cooked, combine with the chicken, mushroom soup, 1 1/2 cups cheese, the green peppers, red peppers, onions, seasoned salt, cayenne, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Stir in 1 cup of the reserved chicken cooking broth, adding an additional cup if needed. Place the mixture in a casserole pan and top with the remaining 1 cup cheese. Cover and freeze up to 6 months, cover and refrigerate up to 2 days or bake immediately until bubbly, about 45 minutes. (If the cheese on top starts to get too cooked, cover with foil).
3 PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY The Bible declares that all have sinned and have come short of the glory of God. Sin is more than just a mistake or a boo-boo. Our sins are serious business. Jesus went to the cross because of our sins. So, let's see sin for what it is - the destroyer of lives. I sin. You sin. We all sin. Being wrong is never right. A sage once said, "A man may fall several times, but he isn't a failure until he starts saying that somebody pushed him!" Another said, "Passing the buck has become a national pastime." This solves no problems - it is only a diversion. Some folk are more concerned about "saving face" than they are with being saved. Any wrongdoing that has not been cared for PROPERLY has not been cared for AT ALL! Let's learn to admit our mistakes. Feeling vindicated is not the same as being vindicated. We all appreciate someone with an honest heart. True blue. No baloney. Accepts the facts. Deals with what is. Fixes what's broken. They can say; "You're right - I'm wrong - I did it!" At that point the healing begins! - Tom Butterfield ****************************** RESPONSIBILITY Life is a lifelong Balancing act Time that's wasted Never comes back But hear my quandary It's really quite queer What happens when my job Conflicts with my career? What happens when my schooling Disrupts my education? When federal government policies Keep me from graduation? What happens when my GPA Keeps me out of universities? What happens when what I need to do Conflicts with my responsibilities? 4 WILL YOUR ANCHOR HOLD?? By Bill Spindler Roving Reporter If we all can do as well as Job did in his severe testing we will come out victors! God has blessed me with abundance and long life for which I am grateful! But now if God takes away my possessions and children, then my health, will my anchor slip and I lose my faith? Would I CURSE God? Let him that thinks he stands take heed lest he fall! (1 Cor. 10:12) Job lost everything, even his family. His wife suggested Job curse God and die! Yet Job responds, Naked I came from my mother s womb and naked I will depart may the name of the Lord be praised! (Job 1:21) Wife, You are talking like a foolish woman. Will we accept good from God and not trouble? Job retained his integrity in all he suffered! It is amazing to me as to how we all care for our bodies! We search for the best doctors and pay high prices for medicines. People move to better climates for health reasons. In our church services we spend a good amount of time announcing and praying for our physical ailments. We ask for healing if it is God s will! A big part of Jesus ministry was spent in healing people who flocked to Him. Everyone, including Job desires to be in Good health. When our prayers do not remove our medical problems will our anchor hold or will we make shipwreck of our faith and HOPE? Job came through his test even in spite of negative friends! Remember our helpers like strong elders, the Holy Spirit and mature brothers and sisters are true friends and encouragers! Our anchor will hold!!! True love never fails! A NEW FRIEND Yesterday I was on the treadmill at Planet Fitness when a young guy got on next to me. He looked like a lot of guys there with many tattoos. I smiled and it wasn't very long before we started to talk. I questioned him about his tattoos and he laughed when I said I bet I'm the only one here without one. I was curious how painful they were to get. He grinned and said it depended on where they were put. I told him I saw one I might like. It went alongside the foot and it would read, "Walk By Faith." He let me know that would be painful! It wasn't long before we were talking about other things too. I inquired how long he had been a member of the gym. He shared he had been there a few years. When our treadmill time was over I asked his name and I gave him a hug. Then Josh stated something that kinda surprised me. He said, "It was great talking with you. Do you know that you are the first person to talk with me here? Most people are intimidated by the way I look." I made a new friend. I've learned a long time ago you can't judge a book by its cover. THE TRUTH MIGHT SURPRISE YOU A few years ago, a 24 year old boy seeing out from the train s window shouted Dad, look the trees are going behind us! As his Dad smiled, a young couple sitting nearby, looked at the 24 year old s childish behavior with pity, when suddenly he again exclaimed Dad, look the clouds are running with us! The couple couldn t resist and said to the old man Why don t you take your son to see a good doctor? The old man smiled and said I did and we are just coming from the hospital, my son was blind from birth and he just got his eyes today. Remember: Don t judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you.
5 I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. Police were called to a day care where a three-year-old was resisting a rest. To write with a broken pencil is pointless. When fish are in schools they sometimes take debate. A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months. A thief fell and broke his leg in wet cement. He became a hardened criminal. Thieves who steal corn from a garden could be charged with stalking. We'll never run out of math teachers because they always multiply. When the smog lifts in Los Angeles, U.C.L.A. The professor discovered that her theory of earthquakes was on shaky ground. The dead batteries were given out free of charge. If you take a laptop computer for a run you could jog your memory. A dentist and a manicurist fought tooth and nail. A bicycle can't stand alone; it is two tired. A will is a dead giveaway. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana. A backward poet writes inverse. A chicken crossing the road: poultry in motion. Show me a piano falling down a mine shaft and I'll show you A-flat miner. When a clock is hungry it goes back four seconds. The guy who fell onto an upholstery machine was fully recovered. You are stuck with your debt if you can't budge it. A calendar's days are numbered. A lot of money is tainted: 'Taint yours, and 'taint mine. A boiled egg is hard to beat. He had a photographic memory but it was never developed. When you've seen one shopping center you've seen a mall. When she saw her first strands of gray hair, she thought she'd dye. Bakers trade bread recipes on a knead-to-know basis. ********************************* A man was on his way home with a new car, which was absorbing all his attention, when it struck him that he had forgotten something. Twice he stopped, counted his parcels, searched his pockets, but finally decided he had everything with him. Yet the feeling persisted. When he reached home his daughter ran out, stopped short, and cried: "Daddy, where's Mommy?" 6 COUNTERPRODUCTIVE By John Kerr Sedentary Reporter Today s sermon outline: THE OATH A man was complaining about his grass growing so fast that he had to cut it more often than he wanted. I asked what he had scheduled for the day. He was going to fertilize his lawn. I guess that somehow that makes sense. The word counterproductive came to mind. It is defined as having the opposite of the desired effect. I thought about some of the times I have practiced things that may seem counterproductive. I hate to admit most of them, like having so many tools and supplies that I can t find what I need at the time. Tools and supplies (junk) get in the way Shortcuts can be another counterproductive exercise. Most of us have taken a shortcut one time or another to save some time. There may be construction or some other obstacle that makes the shortcut longer than the original route. Some of us decide to take a shortcut without knowing where the road leads and find out that we have taken what we call the scenic tour. Our Christianity becomes counterproductive when we try leaving Jesus Christ out of it. It is tempting to help God and use other methods and tactics, but they are only counterproductive. Our Christianity must be about Christ and his Holy Spirit must produce the fruit. John 5:36 I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. 39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life. Scripture reading: Matthew 5:33-37 I. The enlistment oath Forever II. The Christian and oath making What exactly is it? Is it right or wrong? What oath have you taken? III. God s confirmation by an oath He can t lie It was to fill our need of being assured IV. It is nice after so many years to be appreciated NOTES:
