The son of a loving deli owner and an overbearing mother, Cantor Mendelson paints a picture of a bygone day in Jewish America when Jews would flock to synagogue to hear the golden voices of cantors as if it were a concert hall. He recounts a relatable story of a childhood riddled with anxiety and doubt, mixed with joyous memories of music and celebration all told with the expertise and comic timing of a master storyteller. Electronic invitations are coming in January. This event celebrates our generous community and your contributions to the Annual Campaign! CONTACT US AT (650)

2 From Rabbi Jennifer Clayman Chag HaMaccabim (Festival of the Maccabees) The Maccabees are the good guys of the children s version of the Chanukah story, but in the grownup version, they are pretty complicated. When we tell the story of Chanukah to younger children, it sounds something like this: Once upon a time, in the ancient Land of Israel, an evil king named Antiochus ordered the Jews to stop being Jewish. They could no longer keep kosher or celebrate Shabbat, and the Temple in Jerusalem was filled with idols. The Jews were told that if they did not obey Antiochus, they would be killed. One family, led by the priest Mattathias, rebelled. They gathered Jews who were loyal to Judaism and fought against the great army of Antiochus. Even though their numbers were small, the Maccabees, as they were called, won, and when the war was over, they rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem to the service of God. However, when they went to re-light the menorah, there was only enough pure oil left for one day. A miracle happened, and the oil lasted for eight days, long enough for more pure oil to be produced. And so we celebrate Chanukah for eight days beginning on the 25th of Kislev, the day that the Temple was rededicated. Like so many stories and ideas in Judaism, it is important to begin teaching our children about Chanukah at a young age. It is also important to keep adding depth to their experience of the story as they grow older. And as adults, it is important for our own spiritual well-being to continue to dive deeper into the texts and rituals that underpin our lives as Jews. This year, as the winter season approaches, I find myself thinking about the Maccabees. They are the good guys of the children s version of Chanukah, but in the grownup version they are pretty complicated. Here are a few examples of why: The Maccabean revolt was not simply a rebellion of an oppressed people against its oppressors. It was also part of a civil war between fundamentalist and Hellenized Jews. As far as we know, the Maccabees practiced a kind of guerilla warfare that might be labeled as terrorism today. It could be argued that the revolt was self-serving for the Maccabees. After the war, they put themselves in power and established their own dynasty. In violation of biblical law, the Hasmonean dynasty the legacy of the Maccabees consolidated religious and secular power, eliminating checks and balances. It was the Hasmoneans who allowed Rome to establish foothold in Judea, ironically setting the stage for the ultimate collapse of Jewish sovereignty. For these and other reasons, the Rabbis of antiquity were uncomfortable with the legacy of the Maccabees. They chose to exclude the Books of Maccabees from the Hebrew Bible; instead, the books became part of the Christian canon and were preserved (ironically, in Greek, not in Hebrew) in a part of Christian scripture known as the Apocrypha. This early rabbinic discomfort with the Maccabees persisted for much of next two millennia. How, then, did the Maccabees become the heroes of countless Jewish storybooks? One answer has to do with the rise of Zionism and the modern Jewish struggle for self-determination. In light of this struggle, the Maccabees began to seem less dangerous and more heroic than they had throughout the centuries of rabbinic tradition. Indeed, many Zionists identified the rabbis fear of militant action against oppressive governments as a major element of exile mentality to be transcended in rebuilding the Jewish people. Thus... the Maccabees advanced in attention and popularity from about 1890 on. (Arthur Waskow, Seasons of Our Joy: A Celebration of Modern Jewish Renewal, 93) In pre-statehood Israel in the 20th century, there was even a movement to rename Chanukah Chag HaMaccabim (Festival of the Maccabees). Proponents wanted to shift the emphasis of the holiday from the religious idea of chanukat habayit (the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem) to the secular nationalist idea of a military victory that reestablished Jewish sovereignty. Today, my own thoughts about the Maccabees are ambivalent. I understand our people s deep need for a story with warrior-heroes who took up arms in response to a clear threat to their survival. We want so much for the current situation in Israel to be clear that we impose clarity on the past. I am uncomfortable with this, but I understand it. I m also uncomfortable with the fact that if the Maccabees were alive today, they probably wouldn t approve of Reform Judaism. They like many in today s ultra- Orthodox communities would see us as Hellenizers whose acceptance of modernity makes us heretics. But perhaps I m wrong perhaps they would understand the difference between being forced to abandon Jewish practice on pain of death, and the choices that contemporary Jews make as we seek to balance tradition and modernity. In spite of the ambiguity, I will continue to read Chanukah books to my kids, and, as long as it s appropriate, I will continue to refer to the Maccabees as the heroes of the story. As with so much of Jewish history, tradition and literature, the fact that the grownup version of the story is complicated does not mean that the story shouldn t be told. It just means that we have to pay attention to the developmental needs of the listeners, and make adjustments with each retelling. I hope we all have a joyous Chanukah, and I look forward to seeing all of you when I return from sabbatical in March. PAGE 2

6 BUILDERS CIRCLE MEMBER PROFILE: Diana Guthaner Bringing a family legacy to Beth Am Like many European Jews in the 20th century, the Guthaner family forged a circuitous route to freedom and ultimately to a safe Jewish community. Journeying from Germany to Australia to Los Altos Hills, the Guthaner name has found its permanent home and legacy at Beth Am. Diana Guthaner is the last living Guthaner not just in her family but in the world. It s a reality that carries a certain responsibility for Diana, to ensure that the good name she was given is honored, now and into the future. In creating the Ernst Guthaner Fund at Beth Am in memory of her father, Diana honors her family name by enriching our community now and into the future. Through her planned legacy gift to the Fund, Diana hopes to endow it in perpetuity, to permanently benefit our congregation and pay tribute to the man it honors and his interests. I always try to suggest interesting Guthaner fund programs that I know my father would have wanted to come to. This is how I honor the legacy of the Guthaner name. Read more about Diana s story at The Beth Am Builders Circle is the group of members who have included a legacy gift, such as a bequest, to Beth Am. For more information about making a bequest or other planned gift to Congregation Beth Am, please visit or Director of Development Mandy Eisner at mandy_eisner@betham.org, (650) MAXIMIZING YOUR Social Security Benefits Learn how to make the most of your retirement income options SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 2 TO 3:30 P.M. ROOMS 5 & 6 We think we know all about Social Security, but many of us don t know the ins and outs of maximizing the benefits that are available to us. To learn more about your retirement benefits opportunities, members of all ages (but especially those who are approaching retirement age) are invited to a free session by Beth Am member and CPA Jerry Spector. Bring your questions! Light nosh provided. Free of charge. End of Year Giving Our Annual Campaign Thermometer is Filling Up! There are many ways to make tax-deductible year-end gifts to Beth Am. Thank you very much to the 185 households who have already contributed to this year s Annual Campaign, bringing our fundraising total to $164,000 (as of press time). We hope that you will take advantage of our year-end match incentive generous donors will double all gifts of $500 or more, up to $20,000! This is a great reason and opportunity to put Beth Am on the top of your giving list at this busy time of year. Why support the Annual Campaign? Because Beth Am is here for you at every stage of your life to educate, inspire and care for you and your family. And because, despite wonderful contributions from members through their dues, there is always a gap between what we receive in dues and what it costs to run the congregation. And because in order to sustain our core value of never turning anyone away for financial reasons, we must do additional fundraising to close the gap. Your gifts to Beth Am ensure a thriving, enriching community for all! Thank you for your generosity. To learn about ways to give, please visit Questions about making a gift to Beth Am? 7 Home & Hope Welcoming the Homeless ENABLING AN SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7 TO SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13 SOCIAL HALL Beth Am is continuing its partnership with a local nonprofit organization called Home & Hope. For one week, our synagogue will host a few homeless families on the road to long-term self-sufficiency. Each day, we will cook them a hot dinner, provide them with a safe place to sleep, and play with and help their children with their homework. At its day center, Home & Hope provides job training and teaches financial literacy to adults who need a new start; it also offers homeless children tutoring and the use of computers. The families rotate to different churches and synagogues throughout the area as they work toward becoming independent. In order for this project to be a success, we need lots of volunteers. Volunteering is easy, meaningful and fun, and is great for individuals, families and people of all ages. For more information or to sign up, please visit or contact Rabbi Jon Prosnit at rabbi_prosnit@betham.org, (650) A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT How Does a Search Work? We ve started the process to find a way to replace our beloved Cantor Lauren Bandman. How does Beth Am even start to fill the gap left when a clergy member leaves? In my online column at I describe the process from characterizing our community, through creating a job description, identifying candidates, processing feedback and making a decision that (we hope) results in a successful engagement and long-term relationship. L Shalom, Ben Lloyd President@Betham.org A Community Organizing Initiative Update In her Kol Nidre sermon, Rabbi Marder announced that Beth Am was launching a social justice initiative called Equal Start. Equal Start is engaging a large number of congregants who are working to increase the access to affordable early childhood education (ECE) for all children in our community, especially those children who live in disadvantaged families. Over the past two months there have already been several Beth Am events to increase awareness of ECE issues. Equal Start teams have been formed in three areas and will be focusing on: i) Advocacy, ii) Training and Education of teachers and caregivers, and iii) Partnering with existing schools to add staff, volunteers and facilities for children in ECE. These teams have now begun establishing the priorities and planning actions that focus Beth Am s efforts on the issues where we can have the greatest impact. As the teams continue to refine their priorities and specific actions, updates will be posted at the Beth Am Equal Start webpage. Our focus on ECE and the specific objectives of Equal Start evolved over the last two years from our alliance with the IAF, an organization committed to relationship-based community organizing, and from hundreds of conversations with congregants and those in the greater community directly engaged in addressing social justice issues. These conversations allowed us to strengthen connections within Beth Am and to form deeper relationships with like-minded people in the area. We believe that Equal Start will be a catalyst for social change by building relationships between Beth Am and other religious institutions and community organizations. If successful, Beth Am will contribute not only to ECE, but also to a broader host of issues impacting families in our community. Now that the Equal Start initiatives are underway, additional Beth Am house meetings and conversations will be scheduled in the coming months. These events will enable everyone to stay abreast of the latest developments with Equal Start and, for those who want to get more involved, to discover matches between the needs of the program and their own interests, abilities and time. To learn more, ask questions or volunteer, send an to equalstart-info@betham.org or contact one of the clergy who will put you in touch with a congregant already working on Equal Start. PAGE 7

Hunger and Homelessness Drive Please Give Generously This Holiday Season As Chanukah, our festival of light, approaches, we think of the numerous people in our community who are struggling to make ends meet. It has been our long-standing tradition at Beth Am to donate money to organizations dedicated to improving and saving the lives of the hungry and homeless in our community. The organizations that benefit from our contributions are facing extremely difficult challenges, and times remain tough for many. According to a 2013 report by the Center for the Next Generation, one in five children in our state live at or below the poverty threshold. In the past, Beth Am has contributed to worthy organizations, including the Ecumenical Hunger Program, Home & Hope, American Jewish World Service, and Jewish Family and Children s Services. Please look for a letter in the mail with more information about how you can help. We ask that you dig deep to help the most vulnerable. Additionally, you can donate online to our Hunger and Homelessness Fund at (select Hunger and Homelessness Fund from the listing). Gifts of any size are welcome and appreciated.
