1 10/25/13-21 Cheshvan 5774 Parshat Chayei Sara Candle Lighting: 5:45 pm Find us on Facebook Halacha - Keeping Shabbat on Sunday Follow us on Twitter It may seem obvious that Shabbat falls out on Saturday; however, the 11th/12th grade Applicable Halacha Elective recently learned that it is not always that simple. Using the Google Earth and world clock apps, the class realized that if one were traveling west, there needs to be a point on this earth where time ceases moving backwards. This demarcation point was placed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is known as the International Date Line. The question we had to grapple with was does halacha agree with the placement of the date line? There are three schools of thought on the matter. To keep thing simple, Rav Tzvi Pessach Frank agrees that we keep the date line as the non-jews have it; the Chazon Ish places the line further east; while Rav Yechiel Tuchitchinsky places it west of the date line. What results is that according to the two latter opinions, there are places on the globe where one would keep Shabbat on a Friday or a Sunday. The class now knows that Shabbat may not be on Saturday when traveling to Alaska, Hawaii or Japan. Rabbi David Schlusselberg
2 Math Exciting and inspiring topics are being studied in the RKYHS Math Department. Presently, Algebra One students are learning about solving equations. To master this concept, the students engage in repetitive practice by competing in "Equation Relays" with their classmates. Students are also learning to use equations to solve word problems. Geometry students are working on improving their logical reasoning skills by writing two-column proofs. These proofs require the students to use deductive reasoning to create an argument of statements and rational in order to prove that a mathematical theorem is true. Algebra Two students are studying linear equations and inequalities. They are learning to graph equations and inequalities as well as write equations of lines. Students will apply this topic to word problems that involve linear growth models. Pre-Calculus students are studying graphing higher order functions by comparing the way functions shift, reflect, and stretch in the coordinate plane. Further, students are examining the domain, range, maximums, and minimums of functions. Calculus students are working to understand limits and derivatives. Each of the students applies these concepts to real-life optimization and related rate problems such as finding the optimum dimensions for a shipping container. Statistics students are exploring displaying and describing quantitative variables. Additionally, the classes are beginning to extend their study to two variables. The students now understand the substantial differences between correlation and causation; this facilitates the application of lurking variables that might be the true driver behind a relationship. Ms. Rachel Cole
3 Athletics Swim We are proud to announce that for the first time in RKYHS history, there is now a boys and girls swim team. Practices will take place at Gold s gym in Whippany. Over 25 students are participating. Upcoming Games 10/27: Kushner- 4 P.M. ( boys jv basketball) Frisch- 4 P.M.- ( girls jv basketball) 10/28: Kushner- 7:30 ( girls varsity basketball) 10/29: MTA- 8:00 ( boys jv hockey) Frisch- 7:30 ( girls varsity volleyball) 10/30 Kushner- 6:30 ( girls jv basketball) Kushner- 8:00 ( girls varsity basketball) Kushner- 7:15 ( boys jv basketball) SEED For SEED this week, the 10th and 11th grade viewed a short film by Oscar winnin director, Warner Herzog. The film, From One Second to The Next, is a powerful documentary about the dangers of texting and driving. In the film Herzog hauntingly and painfully documents the tragic testimonies of individuals who have shattered lives and have had their lives shattered as a direct result of texting and driving. The project, part of AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign, was distributed to over 40,000 high schools across the country. "There's a completely new culture out there," Herzog told the Associated Press. "I'm not a participant of texting and driving or texting at all but I see there's something going on in civilization which is coming with great vehemence at us."
4 Teens on-line: Parental guidance suggested By Eliezer Rubin / The New Jersey Jewish News After being tormented and harangued online by her peers, 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick of Winter Haven, Fla., took her life, as reported in The New York Times on Sept. 14. This loss should give us pause about the deleterious effects of the unseen and unknown teen cyber world. Our hearts go out to her parents as we pray for them to find strength during their period of grief. For educators and parents of teens, Rebecca s loss provides an opportunity for us to consider the new norm generated by on-line communication. The Internet has provided instant information using multiple platforms that we never could have imagined even 10 years ago. The Internet has expanded our knowledge base and created a global communication network which can foster understanding and collaboration across continents. Continue Reading at the New Jersey Jewish News RKYHS Students Particpate in New Startup Program in Israel Young American entrepreneurs see another side of Israel and get a firsthand experience in Zionist ingenuity. By Elia Berger / The Jerusalem Post At a bustling university campus, on the second floor of the visitor s center, a confident, energetic teenager in jeans and a checkered shirt clicks away at a remote, gliding through the presentation he s worked on for the past three-and-a-half weeks. As the images shift on the giant screen suspended from the ceiling, a business product is unveiled to a four-judge panel of entrepreneurs, investors and experts watching from the first row. The team on stage is part of a four-week entrepreneurial program dubbed the Science and Start-Up Initiative (SSI), which brought 21 9th-11th graders to Haifa s Technion- Israel Institute of Technology. The university partnered with Jewish Journey, an educational company that organizes trips to Israel, on an innovative pilot program for modern-orthodox high school students from the US. While it may not be rocket science like the space shuttle, the start-up, the Spaceshift, displays some down-to-earth ingenuity. This is a college dorm beanbag that transforms into a coffee table/foot rest, without wasting too much space. It helps college kids who have very limited space to have seats for everyone, says Dina Raab, 16, of Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School in New Jersey. This helped me understand the process and challenges of entrepreneurship. Continue Reading at the Jerusalem Post
