(2) She is a child who was abandoned OR found lying asleep in the shadow of the big stone pillar (1) by Monsieur (1). 2. How did Desiree end up and specifically with Madame Valmonde? (2) She has been sent to her by a humanitarian Providence to be the child of her affection, (1) seeing that she was without child of the flesh. (1) 3. What made Armand Aubigny softening his arrogance towards the slaves? (1) Because of his marriage to Desiree and the birth of his son 4. In your view explain why Desiree husband changed his love towards her (2) Because of an unexpected visits from their neighbors (1) who might have poisoned him with black skin hatred (1) 5. Mention two points that Monsieur Valmonde was concerned about the marriage between Armand Aubigny and Desiree. (2) The girl s origin (1) and she was nameless. (1) 6. Why do you think Desiree remained motionless at a certain point in time? (2) She remained motionless because she was shocked to hear the guadonboy s mistress to order him out from the room where the baby was sleeping. 7. Mention any two points Desiree uses to convince her husband that she is white. (2) Her brown hair / her grey eyes/ her skin fair (any two) 8. Why is Armand burning things at the end of the story? (2) Because of the secret he read from the letter (1) that his mother was not of the white origin (1). 2

9. Would it be accurate to say that Desiree and the baby are victims of racism? Justify your answer. (2) Yes. (1) Her husband who is the father of her son let them (Desiree and a baby) leave the house because of the color of the skin. (1) OR when the neighbours visited, they could have told Mr Armond that his wife is not white, which maybe made him feel that being married to Desirre was taboo against other white people.(1) 10. Prairie a. cliff b. steppe c. savanna 3. Obscure a. known b. ambiguous c. unintelligibly 3

4. Nameless a. anonymous b. shadowy c. known 5. Conviction a. principle b. sentence c. uncertainty This section was not very well answered. For example, the first question, it was expected of you to give the answer as it indicated above. Question 6, not many students got it right. You did not read the paragraph to understand what it implies, please look at the answer. Also you are referred to answers for Questions 9 and 10. SECTION B: GRAMMAR (25) Answers: Sits- sat, hangs hanged, lay laid, stands stood, have been fixed had been fixed, feels felt, looks- looked, cannot - could not, gathers gathered. It is really saddening to see that students at the university level cannot conjugate words in to Simple Past tense. Those are correct answers. 2. Reported speech Write the following paragraph in reported speech (10) Answers: Desiree said that she (1) had known (1) I (1) would be astonished at the way he had grown(1) and the way he cried (1) was (1)deafening. Armand had heard (1) him. Madam Valmonde 4

acknowledged that the child had grown (1), had changed (1). She called him Armand in a voice which had stabbed (1) him if he had been (1) a human. You all need to go back to your study guide and revise how reported speech is formed. In the reported speech, quotations are not used. Also, if something is said in the past tense, when you report it, move one step backward that is, use the Past Perfect Tense. In addition, I suggest that you attend vacation school. Conditionals Read these scenarios carefully and come up with sentences in third conditionals. Do not change the meaning (8) 1. Negrillon pretended to rest from work. If Negrilon had pretended to rest from work, he would have. (any past participle that fits) 2. Marriage and later the birth of his son softened Armand Aubigny's authoritative and exacting nature greatly. If it had not been marriage and the birth of his son, Armand would not have softened his heart. 3. Desiree got lost that is why she was found by Monseiur who was riding by. If it had not been Monseiur, Desiree would not have been found If Desiree had not gotten/ got lost OR had not been abandoned, she would not have been found by Monseiur. 4. God arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that his mother belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery." If God had not arranged our lives, Armand would have known that his mother belongs to race that cursed with the brand of slavery. 5. Armand s racist remarks made Desiree and her son to return home. If Armand had not said racial remarks, Desiree and her child would not have returned home OR Desiree and her child would have stayed. Most of you students, did not read and understand these scenarios before you write them in the third conditional. A lot of the meanings were lost in your answers. Some of you do not how to write sentences in the third conditional. I suggest you need to attend the vacation school. 5

SECTION C: CRITICAL READING 20 MARKS Passage 1: adapted from an essay by D H Lawrence Answer all questions based on the two texts (13) 1. It in line 1 refers to a feeling of (1) A. foreboding B. fear C. depression D. malaise E. relief 2. The author of passage one makes his point mainly by the use of (1) A. metaphor B. repetition C. accumulation D. irony and satire E. objective observation 3. The extensive use of the pronoun you in passage one indicates that the author (1) A. is speaking to one particular person B. is describing the experience of someone else C. believes that his feelings will be shared by many others D. wishes to add variety to his style E. is distancing himself from the experience he describes 4. Lawrence apparently believes that the nightmare (line 26) is (1) A. uniquely caused by city life B. only over when he leaves the country C. made worse by the weather 6

D. dispelled by a longer stay in London E. something that is never entirely concurred 5. The word that James uses in Passage 2 that best conveys Lawrence s poky is (1) A. diminutive B. cheapest C. dreariest D. stodgiest E. low 6. The second paragraph of Passage 2 in relation to the first does which of the following? (1) A. analyses a problem raised in paragraph one B. continues the delineation of limitations C. counters a negative impression D. enlarges the viewpoint with the aid of wider examples E. describesmorespecificlocations. 7. The word atmosphere (line 55) refers to (1) A. the mood of the place B. the London air C. artistic impression D. the author s mood E. surroundings 8. By the use of the word congregation (line 61) the author suggests that the parks are (1) A. numerous B. religious C. too crowded D. unlimited in text 7

E. superior attractions 9. James mentions Notre Dame (line 85) in order to (1) A. provide an example of a monument finer than anything that London has to offer B. highlight the impressive nature of a certain London building and its setting C. give an example of a sight more suited to a town or city D. make the image more realistic to the reader E. prove that London and Paris are both attractive cities 10. It can be inferred that James would be less likely than Lawrence to: (1) I complain about the weather II rejoice on leaving the city III find the English countryside dull A. I only B. II only C. I and II only D. II and III only E. I, II and III 11. The contrast between James and Lawrence revealed by the passages involves all of the following except: (1) A. a London lover versus a London hater B. concern with architectural impression versus apparent indifference to architecture C. concern with visual impact versus effect on an individual s state of mind D. appreciation of quiet places and scenic walks versus need for excitement E. taste for the quaint and limited in scale versus dislike of dreariness and pokiness 12. To counter Lawrence s charge of one vast complex of dullness, James would most likely point out that London (1) A. is bright and vast 8

B. offers vistas unmatched in the rest of Europe C. is always romantic and pastoral D. juxtaposes the ugly and the visually attractive E. is uniformly attractive 13. The tones of the two passages differ in that Passage 2 is (1) A. less forceful B. less contemplative C. less mellow D. more subjective C. more emotionally charged 14. Outline any three remarks the first text s author makes about London (3) Life in London is dull Streets and places are dull The climate is not good 15. Outline any four remarks the second text s author makes about London (4) Ugly architectural General greatness of London The atmosphere The parks The view (any four) This section was poorly answered by most of you. But few of you did well. You are going to receive questions of this kind in critical reading, so familiarise yourself with these kind of questions. You need to read the text thouroughly, try to understand it, the questions are based on the text. 9

SECTION D: ESSAY WRITING It seems that you are not reading your study guide properly. Many of you still do not write or come up with thesis statement in the introduction section. Once the thesis statement is not there, you are moved to a lower band. You are also not using linking words between and within paragraphs. Every paragraph must begin with a linking word. The conclusion should summarise the ideas discussed in the body paragraph and at the end of it leave a reader with something to think of, in case of an opinion essay. Most of you are still copying the essay from internet as if you think your own opinion would not count. Most of you went on line and copied the same information. We, the marker know whether you copied and pasted the information. In this way you lose marks. Use your own opinion. Write in proper paragraphs. Other students do not even answer all questions despite you are given ample time to complete your assignment. We want to see some improvement in the second assignment. THANKS COMPILER: Dr FRANS 10
