Powell A pastor boarded a plane in a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt. He sat down next to a well-dressed business guy reading the Wall Street Journal. They exchanged the usual pleasantries, and then the pastor asked the guy what he did for a living. With obvious pride, he said, I m in the figure spa business. We can change a person s entire self-image by changing their body He was young guy, so the pastor asked him if he had been doing it long: No I just graduated college with a business degree, but they ve already given me so much responsibility that I m hoping to manage the eastern part of the operation within a couple of years, he said. So you're a national organization? Oh, yes, he said, We re the fastest growing company of our kind in the nation. Then came the inevitable question, the young man asked: And what do you do? It s interesting, the pastor said. We actually have similar businesses. You re in the body-changing business, and I m in the personality-changing business. The pastor went on, In my field, we apply basic theocratic principles to accomplish indigenous personality modification. The young guy had no idea what that meant, but he said, You know, I ve heard about that. Do you have an office here in the city? Yes, we have offices throughout the state, the pastor said. He continued, In fact, we ve gone international; management has a plan to put at least one office in every country by the end of this business era. The pastor paused, and then asked, Do you have that in your business? The young guy said, No, not yet, but you mentioned management. How does that work? The pastor said, It s a family business. There s a Father and Son who run everything. The guy said, Wow that must take a lot of capital. The pastor replied, Yes, it takes a lot of money, but we never worry about finances. We have a saying about our Boss: He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. Ah, so he s into ranching, too, the young guy said. Then the young professional asked, What about the employees; how are they? The pastor said, They re something special. They have a Spirit that pervades the organization; it s really more like a family. The Father and Son love each other so much that it filters down to everyone else. The pastor then added, I know this sounds unbelievable, but I know people in our organization who would die for me Do you have that in your business? No, the young man said laughingly, but there are some people we d like to kill. Then he asked, What about benefits; are they good? The pastor replied, Good? They re amazing! I have complete life insurance, fire insurance, all the basics. You might not believe this, but I have a mansion being built for me right now for retirement. Do you have that in your business? By this point the young man was feeling like the spa business wasn t exactly the place to be. Finally, he asked, But can the operation last? I mean, companies come and go. The pastor said, Oh, I think we ve got a pretty good future. After all, we ve got a 2000-year run going. And that, my friends, is the Church, the Ekklesia: a group of people called out for God s special purpose of making disciples! The Church has been at the forefront of God s plans from the beginning of time. It has remained at the center of God s plan throughout history. What we are invited to be part of is central to everything else in the entire universe. It s a great privilege, yet it s also a great responsibility. The Church s job is to bring the power and presence of Jesus to the world; we are the hands and feet. Kentucky District family, we are the Church, the Bride, the Body! Our mission field is the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The harvest is plentiful and it s our job to raise up more laborers by following the leading of the Holy Spirit and intentionally making disciples that make disciples that make disciples May God continue to use us to renew, equip, and connect local churches to make Christ-like disciples in the Commonwealth and beyond! This amount is on top of 408 kits that were sent to the South Texas 230 cases from the Kentucky District (1,380 crises care kits), and 50 PAL Paks 222 cases from the Eastern Kentucky (1,332 crises care kits) For a total of 2,712 kits heading to Fort Lauderdale on the Southern Florida District. 5 Clergy Appreciation Month is a special time that congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors and pastoral families for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings provided by these special people. The nature of the service provided by pastors and their families is unique. God has entrusted to them one of the most precious of assignments the spiritual well-being of His flock. Pastors and their families live under incredible pressures. Their lives are played out in a fishbowl, with the entire congregation and community watching their every move. God has instructed us to recognize His servants. The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching (1 Timothy 5:17). Make a difference! Clergy Appreciation Month is a way we can encourage our spiritual leaders with the positive affirmation they need. Don t your pastors and their families deserve this kind of recognition? 6 Mid-Winter Retreat is now... Mid-Winter Retreat has become a tradition on the Kentucky District. This year we are taking it to the next level. The Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky Districts have decided to partner together for what we re calling the BLUEGRASS AWAKENING. The Bluegrass Awakening will include meaningful times of corporate prayer, inspiring times of worship, visionary plenary sessions, and dynamic workshops led by a host of anointed leaders in the Church of the Nazarene.
