READLUKE13:10 17 Lastweekwetalkedaboutfaith.Itriedtopaintapictureoffaithasajourneyas opposedtoadumptruckwithananswerboxontheback. WetalkedaboutthehonourrolloffaithinHebrews11 aboutalloftheheroesof Israel shistorywhofollowedgod.wetalkedabouthoweachoftheseheroeswasa flawedhumanbeingwhodidn tknowenoughordoenough,butwhononethelesswere heldupbythewritertothehebrewsashavingexemplaryfaith. Wetalkedabouthowthejourneyoffaithrequiresthatwegetour truenorth rightand abouthowwehavetobewillingtofollowourpioneerandtodoourbesttostudythe mapswearegiven. Ithinkthestorywejustreadgivesusareal lifeexampleofwhatwetalkedabout lastweek. Ithinkithasalottoteachusaboutourtruenorthandaboutwhatfollowinginhis directionlookslike. WORLDVIEWS Ithinkitalsohasalottosaytousaboutworldviews.Nowperhapsthisisawordthatis unfamiliartoyou.itisatermborrowedfromthedisciplinesofanthropology,sociology, andphilosophy.atthemostbasiclevel,itreferstothemapofrealitythatwelivewith. Here sadefinitionfrommissionaryanthropologistpaulhiebert: 1
2 Worldviewsarewhatpeopleinacommunitytakeasgivenrealities,themapsthey haveofrealitythattheyuseforliving. AccordingtoHiebert,worldviewsserveanumberofimportantculturalandsocial functions: 1. Worldviewsprovideanswerstoourdeepestquestionsabouttheworld. Questionslike: a. Whatistheworldlike? b. Whatdoesitmeantobehuman? c. Howdoweaccountfortheevilandbrokennessintheworld? d. Whatisthesolutiontothedeepestproblemsweface? 2. Worldviewsgiveusemotionalsecurity a. Thereisalotinlifethatwecan tcontrol peopleturntotheir worldviewsforcomfortandsecurity 3. Worldviewsvalidateourdeepestculturalnorms a. Theyprovideuswithourideasofrightandwrongandhowtodealwith them 4. Worldviewshelpusintegrateourcultureandmonitorculturalchange a. Whatdoweallowin,whathastostayout?E.g.,howdoweliveas Christiansinaworldwheretechnologydominates? 5. Worldviewsprovidepsychologicalreassurancethattheworldistrulyaswe seeitandasenseofpeaceandofbeingathomeintheworld AccordingtoPaulHiebert,thisistrueforallworldviews Christian,Hindu,atheist, Buddhist,pagan,anything. Whateverviewwehaveoftheworld whetheritiscarefullythoughtoutandwell constructedoritisjustakindofdefaultapproachwehavetakenwithoutmuch considerationoritisamixtureofawholebunchofthings itdoessomethingforuslike thejobdescribedbyhiebert. Thisistrueforus,butitisalsotrueofthepeopleintheScripturewejustheardread. ACAREFULLYCONSTRUCTEDWORLD Let slook,first,attheleaderatthesynagogue.whatwerehis givenrealities? What kindofa mapforliving washeusing? Well,theword synagogue tellsusthatweareinthecontextofjewishworship. 2
3 Eversincetheirdaysinthedesert,theJewishpeoplehadbeenapeopleoftheLaw. Lawgovernedeveryaspectoftheirlives. But,JewishworshipwasalsofocusedonthetempleSolomonhadbuiltinJerusalem (sacrifices,holydays,etc). AfterthedestructionofthistempleandastheJewishpeoplebegantobeoccupiedby foreignpowersandtakenfartherandfartherfromjerusalem,theyneededtohave placesandformsofworshipthatdidnotrequirethetemple. Sosynagogueswereborn.Jewishworshipbecamemoretext focusedworship,more focusedonlawandapplicationofthelaw. ThisiswherethePhariseescamefrom thiscommitmenttounderstanding, interpreting,applying,andenforcingthelaw. So,fortherulerofthesynagogue,Ithinkwecansafelyassumethathisworldwould havebeenahighlystructured,meticulouslymanagedsystem. Whatwaswrong?TheJewswereanoccupiedpeople.Theydidnothavecontrolover Jerusalemandtheirownpoliticalaffairs. Howwasthebroaderculturetobeintegrated? Itwasn t.thejobofthejewishpeoplewastosimplyliveaccordingtothelawinexile. Theywerenottobecontaminatedbytheirforeignoccupiers.Theyweretobepure andsetapartandtheirobservanceofjewishlawdidthis. Followingthelawwaswhatsetthemapartandpreservedtheiridentityasaminority groupinamassiveunfriendlyromanempire.itwasnotoptional.thelawwasallthey had. AndofcourselawsabouttheSabbathwerepartofthispackage. ThelawsagainstworkingontheSabbatharefairlywellknown.Passagessuchas Exodus20:9 10;Deuteronomy5:13 14makeitclearthatsixdaysareforworking,the seventhisforrest. Butbythefirstcentury,afairlyelaboratesystemofrulesaroundwhatconstituted propersabbathobservancehadbeencreated. Deliberateactivity/skillincraftsmanshipwereprohibited notjustwork.therewere39 categoriesofforbiddenactivity(i.e.,ploughingearth,sowing,reaping,baking,washing 3
4 wool,separatingtwothreads,tying,untying,sewingstitches,tearing,trapping,writing twoormoreletters,erasingtwoormoreletters,building,demolishing,extinguishinga fire,kindlingafire.). That sjustafew.andeachofthe39categorieshaddifferentvariations! It seasytolookatthisandthink,howbizarre! Butremember,interpreting,applying,andenforcingthelawwasaformofworldview maintenance.theydidn tjustcomeupwiththesethingsarbitrarilyforfun. Theselawswerepartofawayoforderingaviewoftheworldduringdifficulttimes. Itwassimple.TheJewswereGod speople.godhadgiventhemlawsforliving.their jobwastoread,interpret,andimplementthelaw.thatwashowthingsworked. Fortherulerofthesynagogue,thisworldviewwouldhaveprovidedemotionalsecurity andpsychologicalreassurance.itwouldhavemeantpredictability,manageability, relativesecurity,andstability. Itwasawell ordered,carefullyconstructedmap. AFRAGILEWORLD Butnotallworldviewsaresoneatandtidy. Howaboutthewoman?There agoodchancethatherworldviewwasafragileand shakything.eighteenyearsofadebilitatingillnesswilldothat. Sufferingisalmostalwaysthebiggestchallengetoanyworldview. TheEnglishtranslationsdifferwhenitcomestoLuke13:10.Mostrefertosomekindof a spirit thathadcrippledthiswomanfor18years.afewsimplysaythatshehadbeen crippled. Eitherway,inthecultureshewasapartof,thiswomanwouldverylikelyhavebeen marginalizedandviewedwithsuspicion,contempt,orjustplainoldapathy. Shewasanobody. Her givenrealities wouldlikelyhavebeenthattheworldwasaharshandmerciless place.itwouldhavebeenseenasthreateningandhostiletoherdesiresforwholeness andpeace. 4
5 Sheprobablyacceptedtheworldviewpresentedtoherbypeopleliketherulerofthe synagogue,butitwasnotasourceofsecurityorreassuranceforher. Itmightjusthavebeenonemorepieceofevidencethatwhateverthepeoplewhowere moreknowledgeableandpowerfulthanherdecidedaboutthewaytheworldwas, thingsjustdidn tworkoutforpeoplelikeher. Perhapsherworldviewwasfatalistic.Therichandthepowerfulprosper.Theweakand thevulnerablearecastasideandmistreated. Badthingsjusthappentogoodpeopleandthere snothingthatcanbedonebutendure and,oneday,escapethroughdeath. Thiswomanprobablylookedattheworldthroughtheeyesofherpain.Shewassimply lookingforreleasefrombondage. WHOISGOD? Sowehavetwopeople,twodifferentwaysoflivingwithworldviews. Ithinkthatinthisstory,Jesuschallengesthemboth. InhealingontheSabbath,Jesuswaschallengingtherulerofthesynagogue s assumptionsaboutthewaylifewassupposedtowork,andwhogodwas. Jesuswaschallengingaworldviewthathadbecomesorigidandmechanicalthatit couldn tevenallowroomforhealingtotakeplaceoutsideitsboundaries. Hepointsthisoutveryforcefullyandangrilyin13:15: ButtheLordansweredhimandsaid, Youhypocrites!Doesnoteachofyouonthe Sabbathuntiehisoxorhisdonkeyfromthemanger,andleaditawaytogiveit water? 16 Andoughtnotthiswoman,adaughterofAbrahamwhomSatanbound foreighteenlongyears,besetfreefromthisbondageonthesabbathday? Lastweekwetalkedaboutthefaithbox abouthowwesometimesthinkoffaithasa possessionratherthanajourney. Jesusisshowingjusthowridiculousourreligiousboxescanbecome. Hewasshowingthatnomatterhowcarefullymanagedourwayoflookingattheworld is,nomatterhowmanyruleswehave,andhowcarefullywedefinetheboundaries aroundwhatcanorcannothappen,nomatterhowreligiouslywefollow,nomatter 5
6 howmuchwedenyourselves,nomatterhowcommittedwearetospeakingtheright wordsaboutgod,togod,forgod thatsettingpeoplefreeisgod stoppriority. InhealingthiswomanontheSabbath,perhapsJesuswasalsochallengingher assumptionsaboutthewaylifewassupposedtowork,andwhogodwas.shewas notanobody.goddidcare.peopleweremoreimportantthanlaws. JesuswasusingtheSabbathforwhatitwasalwaysintendedfor:re creation(whereour termrecreation)comesfrom.hewasrestoringandredeemingandremakingawoman whowassuffering. Hewasthrowingopenwidethedoorstoaworldviewthathadbeencharacterizedby resignation,fatalism,despair,andhopelessness. Hewasshowingthattherewasreasonforhope,thatgoodnessandlifeweremore powerfulthandiseaseanddarkness. HewasshowingthatwithGod,therearesurprisingtwistsinthestory. AndthatGodisinthebusinessofsettingpeoplefree. ANDUS? Ithinkwecanseeourselvesinbothofthesepeople,bothperspectives. 1.Perhapsyouseeyourselfintheleaderofthesynagogue.Perhapsyoulooktoyour carefullyconstructedworldviewforreassuranceandstabilityandmanageability. Perhapsyourmaphasbecomeabox. Thisisatemptationforme.ItcanbeveryeasytorelyonideasaboutGod,systemsand theologicalstatements,anddenominationalapproaches,andinterpretationsof ScripturecancometodominatetothepointwhereIdon tseeclearly. IfI mhonest,idoubtthatjesusisveryimpressedbymytheology.idoubtthathe thinksasmuchofitasido. IthinkJesuswouldbemuchmoreimpressedifIsimplysharedsomeone sburden. AmIpreparedtoallowJesustochallengemyworldview?Toshowmethata nobody bythestandardsofourworldmattersmoretogodthanmycarefullyconstructedand maintainedworldview? 6
7 ArewepreparedtoallowJesustoalterourconceptionsofwhoGodisandhowhe worksinourlives? 2.Or,perhapsyouseeyourselffromtheperspectiveofthewomanthismorning. Perhapsyourworldviewisafragileandshakythingthesedays.Perhapsyourmap doesn tseemtobefittingyourexperience. Perhapsthereareburdensinyourlifethathavecometodominateyourabilitytoread themapandfollowthecompassandyoucan tseetheworldasasafeorhopefulplace. Weallhavestrugglesthatwehavelivedwithforyears;patternsofliving,physical, spiritual,relational,emotionalailments WeneedtohearthatJesuscananddoesheal. SometimesJesushealsdramatically,likeinourpassagethismorning.Someofyou haveseenjesushealpeople,andtakeawaytheirburdensinawaysimilartothe passagethismorning. Butnoteverybodyishealed.Someburdensmustbeborneforyears,evenlifetimes. Whiledramatichealingslikethisonedohappen,moreoftenthehealingpresenceof Jesusisfoundtodayinyouandme.WearethebodyofChrist.Werepresenthimto oneanotherinhisphysicalabsence. Wecanbearoneanother sburdens.wecanshowcompassionandgrace.wecan,like Jesus,chooseforpeopleinsteadofformaintainingrulesandworldviewsandfaith boxes. Whetheryouseeyourselfintherulerofthesynagogueorinthewomanwhowas healedorsomewhereinbetween,ithinkallofusneedjesustocontinuallyreshapeour viewofwhogodisandhowgodworks inourlivesandinourworld. TherulerofthesynagogueneededtoseethatGodwaslessconcernedaboutorderand powerandcontrolthanhewasaboutmercyandrestoration. HeneededtoseethatGoddealsharshlywiththosewholoadpeopledownwithheavy burdenspeoplethattheycannotlift(luke11:46). Thecrippledwomanneededtoseethatshewasnotanobody,thatherburdensdidnot gounnoticedbyadistantandseverelawgiver.thatgodcaredforher. SheneededtoseeaGodwhodealsgentlywiththeweakandtheoppressed. 7
8 Inbothcases,JesuswashelpingpeopletoseewhoGodismoreclearly. FREEDOMWINS Thetitleofthissermonis freedomwins. Nomatterwhereyouseeyourselfinthismorning sstory,thereisfreedomtobefound. FreedomwinsifweallowJesustoupsetandreorientourworldviews,justashewas tryingtodofortheleadersofthesynagogue. Sometimesitispainfultohaveourassumptionschallenged.Itdoesn tfeelgoodwhen theverythingthatwehavetomakesenseoftheworldandourselvesisyankedaway likearugunderneathourfeet. Itcertainlydidn tfortherulerofthesynagogue. ButifhewouldbeenwillingtoseethatJesuswasofferingsomethingbetterandmore life givingthanthecarefullymanagedworldviewtheyhadcometodependon,he wouldhavefoundfreedom. Sadly,hisresponseinthetexttellsusthathechosetopreservehiscertaintyinhowGod worksandtheprecisedetailsofhisworldview,ratherthanthefreedomofagodwho wasworkinginnewandexcitingways. Freedomalsowinsifwe,likethewoman,embracethehealingGodwhotakesour burdensaway. Freedomwinsifwecometoseethatthoughlifeissometimeshardandnotalwaysfair, eventhoughwehaveburdens(evenfor18years!),eventhoughsometimesitseems likerightispowerlessinthefaceofwrong,thatthereisahopethatisreal thatjesus cansetusfreefromthesinandevilthattrapandburdenus,andsetusfreeforalifeof loveandservice. Inshort,freedomwinsifwestickwithJesusonthejourneyratherthanretreating tothecertaintiesorthefragilitiesofourworldviews,ifweallowjesustoreshape ourideasofwhogodisandwhatgodwantsfromhischildren. Thereisathirdperspectiveinthisstory onethatihavenotmentionedthusfar.the crowd. Whatcanwesayaboutthem?Theyhadworldviewstoo,afterall.Likemostpeople, theirswereprobablymostlyareflectionofwhatwascommonatthetime.they 8
9 probablylookedtothelawtoprovidestability,reassurance,andpredictability alens throughwhichtounderstandandinterprettheirsituationasoccupiedpeople. Andliketherulerofthesynagogueandthecrippledwoman,theysawamanwhowas sayinganddoingsurprisingthings.amanwhowasabitunsettling,abitunpredictable, kindofhardtofigureout. Theysawsomeonewhowasnotsafeorpredictable,someonewhotickedpeopleoff, whoconfusedandfrustratedthem.buttheyalsosawamanwhohealedandrestored andprovideakindoffreedomandhopethattheyhadneverseenbefore. Theysawsomeonewhodidn tneatlyfitintotheirworldviewsbutwhoseemedtostand abovethem. Whatwastheirresponse? Justonelineinverse17tellsus:TheyrejoicedatthewonderfulthingsJesuswasdoing. MayGodmakeuspeoplewhoareopentodivinesurprises.Mayweneverclingso tightlytoourviewsabouthowtheworldworks abouthowgodworks thatwefailto seeopportunitiestobringhealingandhopetothosearoundus. AndmaywerejoiceatthewonderfulthingsJesusdoesinandthroughthelivesofhis people. Amen. 9
