1 Mark 10 PREVIEW: In Mark 10, Jesus teaches about divorce, receiving the kingdom as a child, the importance of leaving all to follow Him, eternal rewards, His forthcoming death, and what it takes to become great in the kingdom of God. He also heals a blind man named Bartimaeus. Marriage and Divorce - Read Mark 10: The Pharisees came to Jesus to test Him again this time on the subject of divorce. What question did they ask Him and how was their question a test (v. 2)? 2. Jesus answered the Pharisees question by asking them the question (v.3), What did Moses command you? What was their answer (v. 4)? Was their answer correct? (See Deuteronomy 24:1-4.) 3. Why did Moses command this (v. 5)? 4. Was Moses command God s original intent for marriage (vv. 5-9)? 5. Mark 10:6-8 can be used to disprove the Mormon claim that polygamy is biblical. Instead of answering their test question with a yes or no, what did Jesus use to answer their question (vv. 4-6)? (See also Genesis 2:24 and Malachi 2:16.) Children and the Kingdom - Read Mark 10: The word they in the Greek is masculine, implying that the fathers brought their children to Jesus for a touch. 3 12. How did Jesus respond to what the disciples were doing to those who were bringing their children to Him? Why do you think He responded this way (v. 14)? (See also Mark 9:36-37.) 13. Jesus gave a prerequisite to entering the kingdom of God (v. 15). What is that prerequisite? What did Jesus mean by this prerequisite? (See Matthew 18:3-4.) 14. Although the disciples rebuked those bringing their children to Jesus, He blessed them. The intensive compound verb blessed (kateulogei) occurs in the New Testament only here. The word emphasizes the warmhearted fervor with which Jesus blessed each child who came to Him. How might we obtain a blessing from God? What should we do once we have received it? (See Deuteronomy 28:1 2 and Luke 24:50-52.) Rich Young Ruler - Read Mark 10: A young man ran to approach Jesus in order to find out how he might obtain eternal life. What is the inherent flaw with his question about what is needed to obtain eternal life (v. 18)? 16. Mark 10:17-20 is used by some Jewish apologists and scholars to demonstrate that Jesus says that you have to keep the law in order to get to heaven. Jesus listed the commandments the young man should keep (v. 19). The young man claimed to have kept all these since his youth (v. 20). What did Jesus say the young man still lacked in order to obtain eternal life (v. 21)? (See also Mark 8:34-37.) Mark 10 Page 3

4 17. Mark 10:18 is used by the Jehovah's Witnesses to claim that Jesus denied being God when He told the rich young ruler that there is no one good but God. Jesus challenged the man s incorrect perception of good as something measured by human achievement. This young man needed to see himself in the context of God s absolute moral perfection (good). How did Jesus look at him? How might the rich young ruler have felt when Jesus told him what he still needed to do to obtain eternal life (v. 21)? 18. The young man needed to let go of his riches, for they were keeping him from following Jesus. What was the young man s response (v. 22)? 19. Like the rich young ruler, we often want to follow Jesus ways and obtain a closer relationship and knowledge of Him. What did Jesus say is required for those to happen in our life? (See Mark 8:34 37.) Difficulty of Riches - Read Mark 10: After the rich young ruler departed, Jesus looked around to His disciples and asked about the difficulty in entering the kingdom of God. How hard is it for a person who trusts in the riches of this world to enter the kingdom of heaven (v. 25)? (See also Matthew 19:24, 1 Corinthians 1:26, and 1 Timothy 6:9.) Mark 10 Page 4

5 21. The Jews believed that riches were a sign of God s blessing and favor upon a person s life. This belief caused the disciples to be greatly astonished by Jesus answer because He was saying it is impossible for a person who trusts in riches to enter the kingdom of God. In their astonishment, what did the disciples say among themselves (v. 26)? 22. Even if a person completely trusts in riches or the things of this world, is their salvation impossible (v. 27)? 23. What is required for salvation? What must I do to be saved? (See John 3:16, Acts 16:30-31, and Romans 10:13.) 24. How do you know that you know that you're saved? (See 1 John 3:24, 1 John 4:13, Ephesians 1:13-14, 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, 2 Corinthians 5:5, Romans 8:9, and Romans 8:16.) Eternal Reward - Read Mark 10: Peter stated that the disciples had left all to follow Jesus. His statement is an inquiry to find out what their reward would be for leaving all they had left to follow Jesus (v. 28; see also Matthew 19:27). What did the disciples leave to follow Jesus? 6 26. What is the cost of being a disciple of Jesus Christ and following Him? (See Mark 10:21, Luke 14:25 33, and Philippians 3:7-8.) 27. Jesus gave a list of things a person might have to leave to follow Him (v.29). What is the reason He gave for leaving those things (v. 29)? What is the reward He promised to those who leave those things (v. 30)? 28. What do you think Jesus meant when He said, But many who are first will be last, and the last first (v.31)? (See also 1 Corinthians 1:27 and Luke 13:24-30.) Coming Crucifixion - Read Mark 10: As Jesus went before His disciples up to Jerusalem, what were the disciples feeling (v. 32)? 30. Jesus took the disciples onto the roadside to explain again what was about to happen. He had explained this to them before (see Mark 8:31 and 9:31). What was about to happen? 31. 7 Whoever Desires to Become Great - Read Mark 10: James and John come to Jesus to make a request (v. 35). Who actually made the request? (See Matthew 20:20.) 33. What did James and John hope to obtain from Jesus (v. 37)? (See also Mark 9:33-34.) 34. What do you think Jesus meant by the question He asked James and John (v. 38)? 35. Jesus foretold James' and John s deaths (v. 39). (See also Acts 12:2, John 21:20 23, and Revelation 1:9.) What did He explain to them about the seating arrangements in the kingdom (v. 40)? 36. The other ten disciples were greatly displeased with James and John for asking to sit on Jesus left and right hand in the kingdom. Jesus used Himself as the model for the disciples to follow in attaining greatness in the kingdom of God. What is the model to be followed (v. 45)? Blind Bartimaeus is Healed - Read Mark 10: As Jesus, His disciples, and a large multitude went out of Jericho, a blind man named Bartimaeus, the son (Bar) of Timaeus (defiled one) was sitting at the roadside, begging. By what title did the blind man cry out to Jesus (v. 47)? What does this title refer to? 40. In those days, blindness often happened as a result of eye infections at birth, and was impossible to cure once complete blindness set in. What did Bartimaeus do when he heard that Jesus was passing by (vv )? How is this something we too ought to do in our difficult, dark, blinding situations? (See Psalms 18:6, 34:17, and 57:2.) 41. As the people surrounding Bartimaeus attempted to silence him, what did he do (v. 48)? How is that something we too ought to do? (See Luke 18:1, Matthew 7:7, Psalm 50:15, and Proverbs 8:17.) As Bartimaeus was sitting by the road, how did he know that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by since he was blind and could not see that it was Jesus (v. 47)? 47. Read Romans 10:17. 10 48. When faced with situations in which we're unable to see a solution, we, too, ought to cry out to our compassionate Lord for a touch and for vision. Once He grants us sight by showing us what to do, what should we do that the seeing Bartimaeus did (v. 52)? 49. Perhaps you have an impossible, dark, blinding situation in your life, like Bartimaeus did. How might you, by faith, cry out to Jesus for mercy? Will you arise and walk by faith when called?
