Disciple Becoming Disciples through Bible Study The Old Testament Rev. Dr. Robert E. Young, Instructor
Wednesday Prayer, Praise & Bible Study Opening Song: I Have Decided to Follow Jesus Prayer Scripture: Mark 8:34-38, NIV Moments of Spiritual Formation
Scripture Mark 8:34-38 NIV 34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father s glory with the holy angels.
Syllabus Course Title: Disciple I - Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study Semester: Fall Dates: November 11 th - December 30 th Instructor: Dr. Robert E. Young Class Schedule: Wednesday s 11:30am- 1:00pm and 7:00pm-8:30pm
Course Description: DISCIPLE I Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, is a thirty-four week course that prepares the student to grow in understanding their lives biblically as they respond to the invitation to become committed disciples of Jesus Christ. Christian discipleship is developing a personal, lifelong, obedient relationship with Jesus Christ in which He transforms your character into Christlikeness. Discipleship changes your values into Kingdom values and involves you in Christ s mission in the home, the church, and the world.
Required Text Books: Disciple I- Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study, Study Manual, Second Edition. Recommended Bible Translation: The New Revised Standard Version. Course Objectives: To study to show yourself approved unto God. To develop a personal, lifelong, obedient relationship with Jesus Christ To transform your character into Christlikeness. To change your values into Kingdom values.
Course Objectives Continued: To become actively apart of Christ s mission in the home, the church and the world. To establish a disciplined pattern of study. To choose and stick to a particular time and location for daily reading, writing, study, reflection and prayer. Student Outcomes: The Student will be able to: Identify theme words, scripture verses and the sequence of the biblical story. Express a common human experience and provide perspective from which to read and listen to Scripture
Student Outcomes Continued: Make notes about the scripture s key ideas, persons, events, and new insights through daily bible reading assignments. Draw practical meaning from the scripture through bible teaching. Identify particular characteristic of disciples and think about ways their life and the life of their congregation can reflect those characteristics. Locate additional resources and reference material to aid in biblical studies.
Principles for Bible Study The Word of God is Jesus Christ, and the words of the Bible tell us about that Word. Therefore, when we study the words of the Bible we always look behind, in and through those words for God s Word-Jesus Christ. No Christian has a monopoly on understanding either God s Word of the words of the Scripture. This includes biblical scholars and the most unlearned Christian. All of us must listen to one another as we seek to understand the richness of God s gifts.
Principles for Bible Study Continued While we accept differences, we do not feel that those differences are unimportant, or that they should be ignored or treated as if they did not matter. Different biblical understanding can remain among us, but we can still be warm Christian friends. In fact, as we grow to better understand our differences, we can grow in our appreciation of one another.

Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Preview Session 1 Day 1 Hold the Bible in your hands, remembering that it is many books by many writers who were inspired by God. Study the listing of the books of the Bible to get a feel for the titles. Look through the entire Bible, paying attention to the content headings. 22 Litany of Discipleship John ; Luke ;Matthew LEADER: If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. PEOPLE: By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
Litany of Discipleship LEADER: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. PEOPLE: These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
Litany of Discipleship LEADER: Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? PEOPLE: Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish.
Litany of Discipleship LEADER: Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? PEOPLE: So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
Litany of Discipleship LEADER: After he was raised, Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. PEOPLE: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. ALL: And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
