1 WELCOME TO BARON HIRSCH Annual Program / 5771

2 Baron Hirsch Congregation Baron Hirsch Congregation traces its roots back over 140 years as one of the first synagogues serving the Memphis Jewish Community. For generations, Baron Hirsch has been a place where Jews have gathered to learn and grow in Jewish practice and knowledge, and countless families have become more connected to their heritage and to the community because of their relationship with Baron Hirsch. The Baron Hirsch Congregation of today is a vibrant, modern Orthodox Zionist congregation that seeks to engage its membership in experiencing all aspects of Jewish life with a strong commitment to the Jewish people, the State of Israel and our Torah. To accomplish this goal, we focus our concentration in four major divisions: TABLE OF CONTENTS The Baron Hirsch Educational Institute forms the core of the synagogue as a Bet Midrash, Study Hall, that offers learning opportunities for all backgrounds. We offer a variety of class settings where everyone can find a venue of interest, including discussion groups, guest lectures, callin classes, lunch & learns and living room classes. Religious services form the core of the synagogue as a Bet Tefillah, House of Prayer. Our services are warm and spirited, and we go to great lengths to make everyone feel welcome. Our Building Relationships initiative to create stronger member bonds focuses on both major events for everyone as well as smaller groups. Major events such as Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, trivia nights, young family events and many other socials attract hundreds of participants who come from different backgrounds, but enjoy celebrating together. Our clubs span every segment of our congregation, from young couples to seniors, and focus on education, entertainment, and togetherness. The Baron Hirsch Youth Department (BHY) offers programs and services from toddler to collegiate. Our Shabbat & holiday programs, NCSY, youth lounge, teen events, and Camp Darom, our summer camp, are just a few examples of the importance we place on the futures of our community. 3 Welcome From the Rabbi Shalom: Bet ha-keneset, if understood as a house of prayer, is an institution; however, if understood as a house of gathering it becomes a place where people from all different walks of life can bring their challenges, their aspirations, their experiences and their families to grow and to connect to G-d. When I look around Baron Hirsch I see how unique our shul is. We are one of the only shuls in the United States that has so many Jews from so many different backgrounds. We all feel comfortable in the shul, like a family knowing that each one of us has his own wishes, dreams, goals and hesitations but we have a common thread, that brings us all together to grow and to connect to our shul, Baron Hirsch. Baron Hirsch offers a full range of services and classes for adults, teens and children. Our class topics range from the Talmud, Halachic questions, Jewish Philosophy, Ethics and Jewish History. Our Scholars-in-Residence weekends throughout the year provide Shabbat enrichment and real opportunities to explore different areas of our tradition. Adult Education opportunities abound with the Israel Affairs class, Mini Lecture Series, Education Minyan, Women s Parsha class, Living Room classes, Jewish History class, Lunch and Learn class, Shabbat Afternoon class, Sources: The Jewish History Book Club, our new two-year Tanach program and so much more. Seniors always enjoy the monthly Kol Rena So-Shuls luncheon. The Baron Hirsch Sisterhood, Men s Club, Chesed Committee, Kiddush Corps and Knitting Group all offer numerous volunteer opportunities to help make our shul and our community a better place. The Baron Hirsch Youth Department features a wide array of activities for children of all ages, including our new Tot Shabbat, the increasingly popular Shoa and Tkuma Program, Kesher Konnection, as well as Torah study and more. We are proud to present to you this Guide for your growth, which contains virtually everything you need to know about Baron Hirsch: our Educational Institute, Scholar-in-Residence Shabbatot, holiday and congregational events, general information, and the Youth Department. We would be thrilled to see you and your family at our programs throughout the year, and we look forward to the opportunity to serve your needs. The events and programs presented by the synagogue have only one requirement they need attendance to ensure our continued growth and diversity! We invite you to scan these pages and discover which window leads to your Jewish community experience.
