Message from Laura Kloot, on behalf of Shosh, Paul and Debby In Memory of our Father and Husband T o the Mizrachi community, which was such an important part of Dad s life please accept our family s heartfelt thanks for your support throughout Dad s illness. Your prayers, visits and friendship were deeply appreciated by Dad and by us all, and will be remembered with gratitude. **** I d like to present a picture of Dad, perhaps a bit different to the Dr Kloot that everyone knew via his work in Melbourne s shules and communal organizations. Before he was Dr Kloot, Dad was a young man in Melbourne, from a nominally traditional home, drawn to the field of science, yet equally drawn to a deeply spiritual Jewish life. After completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at the University of Melbourne, Dad moved to Adelaide to do a Masters of Agricultural Science. So at the age of 21, a religious Jew alone in a new city, he found himself invited to a bar mitzvah. There he was introduced to Shoshana Willinger, the daughter of one of Adelaide s only kosher and shomrei Shabbat families, and as he once told me fell madly in love with Mum. So began a strong and devoted partnership that endured for 46 years. Settling in Adelaide s tiny Jewish community of just 1000 people, Dad found employment in the South Australian Ministry of Agriculture, and at the same time, began to sow the seeds of a life dedicated to communal service. In 1971, Dad established the first Jewish kindergarten in Adelaide, followed by the day school, Masada College. On its first day, the school had just three students. Yet thanks to Dad s determination and industriousness, Victor Ades Memorial Kindergarten and Masada College provided Jewish education to an entire generation of Jewish primary schoolchildren in Adelaide. Once again driven by the importance of Jewish education, the family moved to Melbourne in 1983, when a high school was needed. Dad was unable to find suitable work in his field in Melbourne, so he continued to live in Adelaide, and would visit us in Melbourne on weekends. During those years, until he began working at Mizrachi and moved permanently to Melbourne in 1987, Dad also completed his PhD. Dad s contribution to Botanical Science in South Australia is recognised until today. His research involved comprehensive cataloguing of noxious weeds native to South Australia. I remember he used to say a rose in a potato garden is a weed. As always he appreciated and was able to communicate in a succinct and meaningful way, the broader implications of life s smallest details. Dad s life was devoted to Torah learning, strict commitment to Halacha, and the advancement of communal religious life. However Dad was also very much immersed in the joys of the everyday. An early morning swim in the beach off Moonta Bay in South Australia, where as kids we would watch him from the balcony of our holiday apartment. Listening to Mozart, savoring a piece of dark chocolate, chuckling to episodes of Yes

Minister and Mr Bean, scouring second hand bookstores on weekend trips to the country, a game of Scrabble with Mum, delivering a hilarious speech with his deadpan manner on a Shabbat getaway with good friends. This was Dad full of love and faith in Hashem, an unquenchable thirst for Torah and Avodah, yet with a deep appreciation of and connection to the rhythms of the world he lived in. Dad, although we miss you very much, it helps to think that surely your good neshama is now finding its full expression, free of the troubles of this world, safe and comforted in the arms of Hashem, where all your life you so longed to be. Message from Ari Schachna It is almost an insurmountable challenge to summarise my thoughts of someone with the attributes of Dr Peter Kloot z"l. Clearly, others will do so far more eloquently in this worthy publication. However, as someone privileged to experience different aspects of my father-in-law, I would be remiss if I do not even try. Growing up in Mizrachi and Bnei Akiva, my perception of Dr Kloot was the same as everyone else. A deeply devout and serious man, an administrator who was efficient and made Mizrachi run smoothly. Someone who, if I am being honest, was quite intimidating- a big beard, large hat and no time for small talk. Especially to me- I fully intended to marry his youngest daughter. I first experienced the esteem in which Peter was held in the entire Jewish community shortly after Debby and I were engaged. My sorely missed grandmother, Alice Farkas z"l, had the tradition of visiting Rabbi Groner every Erev Yom Kippur and that year I accompanied her. The room was teeming with people and after paying his respect to my grandmother, Rabbi Groner ripped off a chunk of Lekach, handed it to me and gruffly asked: "How many children do you have?" "None" "Are you at least married?" "No.. but I am engaged" "To who" he asked "Debby Kloot" "Peter Kloot's daughter?". He looked me square in the eye. "Peter is a good man. A very good man. You have done well". Once I married Debby and spent more time with her father, my admiration for Peter grew. For me, he personified yahadut. He was a man of absolute integrity. I never heard him utter a word of Lashon Hara or gossip- and he made clear his displeasure if others did so.

He taught me that religion is not something you experience in Shule or go and learn at the Beit Midrash. Rather, you live it. It permeates your very existence- it impacts your every word, thought and action. He would not preach to or criticise others. Rather, he was the personification of a "dugma ishit"- a personal example. He also taught me absolute love. He was besotted with Shosh and she with him. Even after so many years of marriage, they would sit on the couches in their front room and talk and laugh for hours, often late into the night. Of course, as with all father-in-law and son-in-law relationships, there were the awkward moments. We were at the Kloots the first Friday night after we were married and Peter handed me a drinking glass full of Chivas Regal and said that we had to speak privately in the other room. I took a long gulp and followed meekly. He turned to me and said "We have to discuss what you are going to call me now that you are married to Debby" "I was thinking Peter" "You can't" he replied "It's not permitted halachically. I suggest Abba" "Sorry" I stammered "I can't see that happening" "Abs?" he suggested hopefully "Um... In the end we resolved it. I called him "Please". As in "Please pass the potatoes" or "Please can I speak to Shosh". But then we had children. And everything changed. Because he was no longer Dr Kloot, Peter, Abba or Please. He was Pappa. He loved our children unconditionally. And they him. He took a keen interest in their school work, their lives and their feelings. He beamed with pride when they sang Ma Nishtana (even from under the table) and would have them sitting on his lap, talking about a Chag and quizzing them on school or the parsha. We have a photo on our wall of Peter blowing a Shofar for my daughter Carmelle's kinder class- and Carmelle and her younger brother Tal are beaming at him with a mixture of pride, awe and love. My children adored him. The night that my wife left to Israel for the levaya, I heard six year old Tal talking to someone in his room. I peeked inside. He was holding my iphone and tearfully asking "Siri, why did Peter Kloot have to die?" And they learnt from him. Little Leezy, who is four, upon learning from Tal that Papa is in heaven with Hashem, commented "He can now do lots of davening, yeah? He will be happy". I along, with the entire community, will miss Peter terribly. I will miss Dr Kloot who had such a marked impact on the broader Jewish community through his work at Mizrachi, the Bet

Din, the Torah Centre and the Eruv. I will miss Pinchas ben Tzvi Hacohen, a devout man who considered himself blessed- who, every year on the anniversary of the aneurism that almost killed him many years ago, had a Kiddush Hodaya to thank Hashem. I will miss Peterdevoted husband, loyal friend and proud father. I will particularly miss Please- who had become my confidante and with whom I had developed a strong bond. But most of all, I will miss Papa. And I will miss that my children will not continue to experience his warmth, affection and unconditional love and cannot continue to learn from and be inspired by him. Message from Ian Waller President of Mizrachi D r Peter Kloot z l served as Executive Director of the Mizrachi Organisation for 18 years between and During that time Peter worked with six Mizrachi Presidents: Bernie Pushett z l; Robert Fixler; Danny Lamm; Warren Zauer; Malcolm Slonim z l and Sam Seigel. Peter s commitment and loyalty to each of them (and the Executive and Committee which they led) was consistent and unwavering. Prior to moving to Melbourne, Peter had been an accomplished scientist and a capable public servant with the South Australian Department of Agriculture. Upon moving to Melbourne, although Peter embarked on a new career as a Jewish professional, he brought to his work as Executive Director of Mizrachi a disciplined approach and well-honed administrative skills. But the qualities that most characterised Peter s service as Executive Director of Mizrachi were integrity, dignity, humility and menschlichkeit. After Peter retired as Executive Director he continued to serve the Melbourne Jewish community in various roles: as Administrator of the Melbourne Eruv, as Foundation Registrar of the reconstituted Melbourne Beth Din and also assisting the Torah Centre. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Mizrachi Organisation, Peter was made an honorary life member in Until his recent illness, Peter maintained his close connection to Mizrachi. He was a regular mitpallel and ba al tefillah, as well as occasional ba al koreh and magid shiur. I had the z chut of attending Peter s levayah in Modi in two weeks ago. In accordance with Peter s request there were no hespedim. Instead his son Paul recited Perek Shira, an ancient text containing 85 sections in which elements of creation use biblical and rabbinic verses to sing Hashem s praises. Paul informed those present that his father would recite Perek Shira daily. The medieval philosopher Rabbi Joseph Albo wrote that whoever recites Perek Shira is guaranteed a place in the World to Come.

The three teenagers who were kidnapped and murdered a year ago are also buried in the Modi in cemetery. In the years to come many people will no doubt visit their graves. When they do so they will see the kever of Pinchas ben Tzvi Hakohen which is situated just metres away, the final resting place of a remarkable individual who devoted himself tirelessly to his family, his community and Klal Yisrael. In addition to everything else he accomplished in his life, Dr Peter Kloot z l will be remembered for the exemplary contribution that he made to the Mizrachi Organisation. May his memory be a blessing and a comfort to his dear family and to all of us. Yehi Zichro Baruch. Message from David Prins Ifirst got to know Dr Peter Kloot through Mizrachi, in his capacity as Executive Director, fellow mitpallel, and magid shiur. I soon discovered that Peter was respectful of all, and respected by all. Peter had a rare combination of talents. Among them, he combined knowledge, experience, wisdom and modesty, in his service of G-d, as well as in his service to Mizrachi and the wider Jewish community of Melbourne. I saw a further side of Peter when I married Romy, and Peter became so to speak family, as mechutan of my parents in law. I now had the great privilege of sharing formal and informal semachot and Shabbat and Yom Tov meals with Peter and Shosh. I saw Peter as devoted husband to Shosh, and father and grandfather to his children and grandchildren. I saw the same aspects of integrity and compassion, along with a practical outlook and a deep understanding of the priorities in life. Our last simcha together was the siyum sefer torah which took place in Israel honouring Peter s 70th year, when Peter fulfilled to its fullest the last mitzvah in the Torah to write a Sefer Torah. Just over two years ago, we established a third strand to our relationship. I was honoured to be approached by Peter to be his successor as Administrator of the Melbourne Eruv. I again witnessed his patience and understanding as he explained to me from first principles what he knew in detail from his almost 20 years service to Melbourne Eruv. Peter had been instrumental in the creation of the eruv, and then served as Administrator from the eruv s inception in 1997, until he handed over to me. I came to understand even more clearly just how much Peter had achieved for the Melbourne Jewish community, and how Peter had personally put in place the infrastructure that the community now took for granted. I also learnt from my work with Melbourne Eruv how loved and respected Peter was in the wider Melbourne community. Our eruv contractor, and our eruv partners in the utility companies, spoke only highly of Peter in all contexts, and were deeply saddened to hear of his illness and subsequent passing. Peter s legacy includes his family who are left behind who should be spared more sorrow, and enjoy only happy occasions. His legacy also includes many aspects of Jewish communal

welfare in Melbourne, and his great good name. We say of someone who has passed away that their memory should be for a blessing. Peter s life was and is for many blessings. Messages from Jerry Van Leeuwen, Rocco Gerardis, Ted Blackburn and Ian Taylor Past and present contractors to Melbourne Eruv As contractors to Melbourne Eruv, we had a very close continuous working relationship with Dr Peter Kloot over 16 years, from 1997 when the Melbourne Eruv was being considered for construction, until his retirement two years ago. On-site construction can be stressful, particularly when working on major roads, with fast moving traffic. We were learning on the job the eruv construction standards, while also working within industry rules and regulations. Peter s manner was very composed and polite. He was a pleasure to have on site. He taught us all that we needed to know about eruv construction and maintenance, and his presence and words always had a calming influence on us. When the contractor team grew and changed, Peter was very welcoming. He took the time to get to know our new personnel. The present eruv contractors have fond memories of Melbourne Cup Day 2012, when we were discussing eruv matters with Peter, and were invited to a magnificent lunch at the home of Peter and Shosh. Peter treated us with full respect at all times. He made it clear to us that he viewed anything we raised with importance, and always took the trouble to consider everything in detail to make sure it was fully correct. We will forever remember Peter fondly. He is sadly missed by us all. Our best wishes to Peter s family and friends. Message from the Board of Melbourne Eruv T he Board of Melbourne Eruv wishes to express its great sadness on the passing of the founder administrator of the Melbourne Eruv - Dr Peter Kloot - Pinchas ben Tzvi Ha- Kohen z"l. Dr Kloot provided almost 20 years service to Melbourne Eruv. He was instrumental in the creation of the eruv, and then served as eruv administrator from the eruv's inception in 1997, until he stood down from the position just under two years ago. Our thoughts are with Dr Kloot's family at this time. May they be spared more sorrow, and enjoy only happy occasions.

Message from Stephen Shnider Chairman, Kosher Australia F or me, it is an impossible task to attempt to capture in words, the qualities of Peter Kloot ;ע ה a man I worked alongside for many years and someone I, together with Anne, had the very great privilege to consider to be a very close and true friend. It was no surprise that Peter requested no hespid be made, because I believe he did not consider what he did to be out of the ordinary. Yet for me and for many others, Peter Kloot embodied the qualities which I believe Hashem had in mind for man. Someone who dedicated his life for the benefit of others and whose words were always measured, to ensure they were of kindness towards others and most importantly words of Torah. Let me share one of many times I spent with Peter. Shortly after I became the Chairman of Kashrut, I met with Peter in his office at Mizrachi. At that time he was both the Executive Director and Kashrut Administrator. I sat across the desk from Peter and observed how he seamlessly moved from one issue to the next, never getting flustered and giving everyone who had sought his help, respect and the courtesy of listening to the matter they raised, and as only as Peter could, the solution required. I asked him if he had any advice for me as the incoming Chairman. His response has remained with me and has guided me throughout my time as Chairman of Kosher Australia. As always Peter selected his words carefully and only after thought. He looked around his office and said words to the effect that I should always remember that we are here for the benefit of others. He told me that I have the privilege to help others to keep kosher, to keep a mitzvah every day of their lives. He then went on to say that the people we serve may be people we know, but most likely what we do will be to help people who we will never know. He paused and thought, and said importantly you will have the unique opportunity to help the young married couple who is setting up their kosher home from which they will teach the next generation. He told me that I am a part of the chain which will ensure that Yiddishkeit will last and grow stronger far beyond our involvement. As I write these words, I am replaying in my mind his calm voice, and, can recapture the sincerity of Peter s advice. His words were on one level a very simple and obvious message, yet on another level were very deep and meaningful. It was just so Peter. It summed him up. He dedicated his life to truly serve the community; he directed all his efforts to make it possible for others to keep mitzvot. In short he always thought of others first. The message he gave me, no doubt applied equally to every area of communal life Peter immersed himself in, be it Mizrachi, Kashrut, Eruv, Beth Din and lately his time at The Torah Centre. He worked tirelessly for Kashrut during his time as its Administrator. He saw opportunities to make it grow and took them; and he laid the foundations which have secured all of the progress made by Kosher Australia. After he retired from Mizrachi, he never stopped his involvement in Kashrut. He joined the Board and shared his knowledge and experience, but most importantly, he always offered me his wise counsel and did whatever he could to assist. Even during his illness, I would sit with him and discuss the latest Kashrut challenges. As his health deteriorated and his ability to discuss with me his thoughts became more challenging, he still managed to find a way to

express to me his thoughts. Indeed when I sat with him just a few days before he was niftar, we discussed one of the latest issues at Kosher Australia. Somehow I felt that even with his physical limitations he was still helping me through the matter. On behalf of Rabbis Gutnick and Barber, the Board, each of the Chairmen of Kashrut who preceded me and who worked with Peter, the staff of Kosher Australia and from Anne and myself, we pause to recognise the indescribable and immeasurable contribution which Peter Kloot has made to Kashrut, not only in Melbourne but throughout Australia. When the history of Kashrut in Australia is written, the name of Peter will justifiably feature with great prominence. To dear Shosh, Laura, Paul, Debbie and families, you can gain comfort that Peter has left an enormous legacy which cannot be simply put into words. In adopting Peter s own words, his dedication and service to Kashrut has been felt by so many people and most importantly, will for generations to come. He certainly has shaped my life. His Memory is a Blessing. Message from Harry Gelber and Menachem Broner On Behalf of the Trustees of the Rabbi Abaranok Award for Torah Studies in Israel As Executive Director of the Mizrachi Organisation Peter Kloot זצ"ל oversaw a range of activities. In working with Peter on the Rabbi Abaranok Award for Torah Studies in Israel, we personally witnessed how he conducted the administrative oversight of this with the same professionalism, dedication, sensitivity and integrity that characterised everything he did. However we believe what underlined this particular aspect of the role was the enormous respect Peter had for Rabbi Abaranok זצ"ל which was entirely reciprocated by the Rav. Rabbi Abaranok זצ"ל believed that Peter represented the best of what Mizrachi stood for. This sense of mutual respect between these two special men was ongoing until the Rav passed away in Rabbi Abaranok s judgement about people was always impeccable and in the case of Dr Peter Kloot, his judgement was exceptionally accurate. יהי זכרו ברוך

Message from Rabbi Hillel and Rosie Bick Peter,ז ל first and foremost was a very good friend. He was someone we admired for his honesty, intelligence, sense of humour and integrity. He was amazingly successful in whatever he chose to do and numerous religious institutions benefited greatly from his endeavours. Everything was accomplished in a modest way leshem shamayim without any thought of reward or kovod He will be sorely missed. יהי זכרו ברוך Message from Rabbi Boruch Zaichyk, abbi Shimon said in Pirkei Avot, there are three crowns, the Crown of Torah, the Crown of Priesthood and the Crown of Kingship. But the Crown of a Good Name surpasses them all. R In the years of the friendship with Peter and working together and learning together with him, I found him to be approachable, friendly and with a serious and deep understanding for learning. Our relationship remained the same even though we lived in different parts of the world. Therefore, I believe he possessed the three crowns that Rabbi Shimon said, the Crown of Torah, for he loved learning and immersed himself completely when we learned together. And not only showed his knowledge in learning, but his humor as well. The Crown of Priesthood, he was a Kohen and took very seriously the laws pertaining to be a Kohen. The Crown of Kingship, our sages explain are people who are Talmedei Chachamim and Peter was that, as he attended many of my shuirim, plus the time we spent learning together privately. That is why he had this crown as well. But the Crown of a Good Name surpasses them all, and that I believe is the reason, because of his other attributes that I just enumerated, he had a Good Name among all who knew him. He will therefore be greatly missed. May his memory be a blessing to his dear wife Shosh, his children and grandchildren as well as to all his friends.

Message from Leon and Agi Anaf How can one capture the essence of a great man and much loved friend, in just a few words? How can we even begin, writing of Peter separated from Shosh? They were the ultimate team, reading each other s thoughts, his wonderful dry wit rounding out Shosh's innovative ideas for fun and celebrations. Peter was the supportive young father during his wife's medical training, devoted to family and thoughtful of their needs, ready to move interstate to meet their standards for Jewish education. The distance between Melbourne and Modiin was rendered non-existent to the end by bilateral regular visits to share smachot and chagim and be there as needed. The trip for the siyum Sefer Torah six months ago was one that he cherished always. With extraordinary effort Peter made the journey with his family's support and participated with enthusiasm. As a private man he was loving, kind and considerate. As a public person he was well respected as a man of dignity and integrity; respected for his intelligent and diligent contribution to the many projects to which he directed his talents and energy. Peter will be much missed not only by his loving family but also by his many friends and colleagues. Yihyeh zichrono baruch Message from Hanna Leah Baum ODE TO PETER KLOOT News of your passing sent me a jolt I halted burst into tears like a bolt I didn t know you were sick For so many you were a robust wick Lighting sometimes a dark world You were a solid nugget of gold Peter you helped so many of us You helped me no one will know All with characteristic minimum of fuss Peter I shall never forget your mediation For that I am indebted to you forever We will always remember your traits Which we would like to emulate Emotional Intelligence in abundance Bountiful Hesed Tzniut of attitude and manner

And a deep understanding and a true smile And a courage and fortitude beyond the mile Message from Rita and Menachem Broner T he quiet dignified gentlemanly demeanour that typified Peter Kloot z l to the casual acquaintance was the exterior persona of a person of great intelligence and principles, wit and zeal. We came to admire Peter over the years for his strength of character and great learning. His early morning Shiur connected with Megillat Rut was a Shavuot delight. When he sponsored a Kiddush after the Hashkama minyan davening on Shabbat, one knew they were in for a treat because Peter would speak, combining a relevant Dvar Torah with loving remembrance of a departed relative plus a sprinkling of his wonderful dry humour. He was a gentle and supportive mentor to Menachem when he took over as Gabbai at Hashkama, and frequently Menachem would ask Peter s advice regarding various matters related to the Minyan. Peter had strong opinions on various matters but voiced them only when he felt the occasion warranted it. It is a manifestation of the regard in which Peter was held that his loss is so keenly felt among so many people with whom he came into contact, be it in relation to Kashrut or the Eruv or so many other projects he was involved in, and who now feel such a great void with his passing. May his memory and his many good works be a blessing to his family, and to all who gained by having known this special man. May his devoted tireless Shosh and loving family know only Smachot from now on. Message from Benjamin Cohney Ifirst met Peter coming to settle in Melbourne some 16 years ago. Thereafter we met regularly on a daily basis at Minyanim and shiurim & for the last 3 years he was a valued member of our Daf Yomi Group. He was the quiet & gracious achiever, respected by all for his knowledge & was always ready to help in so many ways. As administrator in his many roles, he was efficient & courteous & his guiding hand will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy to Shoshi & family on the loss of a loving husband & father

Message from David & Eva Cook My personal association with Peter stretches back almost 50 years, to the time when he first went to Adelaide to complete his bachelor's degree in Ag Science, before joining the SA Department of Agriculture as a botanist. His need for kashrut led to him accept the occasional meal from the Willinger family, parents of Shosh and Rachel, and the attraction soon extended beyond Mrs Willinger's kneidelach. Almost as soon as he arrived Peter began forging a strong bond with the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation. Those two associations were the bedrock of Peter's life during his many productive years in the Adelaide Community. He, of course, married Shosh and they had three lovely children, Paul, Laura and Debbie. They were outstanding parents. Shosh balanced parenting with completing her medical degree and practice, and Peter became an expert in agricultural weed control. His work on the Ranunculus earned him a PhD through the Waite Agricultural Institute of Adelaide University. As a senior scientist, he continued to work in the Department in the early years after the family moved to Melbourne, commuting weekly. Peter's devotion to Yiddishkeit was total and all of his spare time seemed to have been spent in communal and congregational issues. He was a longstanding member of the AHC Board of Management and as a Baal Tefila he was always a delight to hear. He was undoubtedly the driving force in the establishment of Massada College, which, from the mid-70s, provided a good Jewish and secular education at primary level to a large cohort of the community's children. He was intellectually sharp, modest, hardworking, reliable and generous. An aspect of his persona that may surprise those who did not know him well was his mischievous wit, which made for some of the funniest "after dinner" speeches one was ever likely to hear. The move by the Kloot family to Melbourne in 1982 was part of a general winding down of Orthodox Jewish life in South Australia as families sought more secure futures for their children in larger Jewish communities. On a personal level my family and Peter's were close. We were friends. We served on various committees together, most notably the AHC and Massada College, and weather permitting, our children regularly played together on Shabbat afternoon while the adults, Peter, Shosh, Eva and I studied Parshat HaShavua together. We maintained that closeness after "Adelaide" and our children have continued the bonds that they forged back then and developed further as adults. I was privileged to be able to spend some time with Peter on the afternoon before he lapsed into his final coma. We recalled some of our life back when our children were young, and the joy of grandchildren. He was comfortable and still able to smile at some of our shared memories; I can still feel the squeeze of his hand. It is difficult to grasp that Peter has succumbed to his final illness. He was such a constant part of my family's life, now his memory will be a blessing that will endure with us always.

Message from Leon Duval W hen Dr. Peter Kloot accepted the position of executive director for the Mizrachi Organisation he initiated the start of a distinguished career as a professional Jewish community administrator, and ended another distinguished career as an internationally recognised scientist. The decision to make this transition like everything Peter always did was carefully thought through, and included discussing the issues involved with the people he most trusted. I was fortunate to be one of the first lay leaders in the organisation to work with Peter during his initial orientation period which was then followed by a wonderfully productive time as he gradually ensconced himself into the role he fitted so perfectly. Always the diplomat, and always prepared to listen to both positive suggestions and the all too frequent kvetches, Peter endeared him to all and sundry, not only in the Mizrachi organisation but also within the wider Jewish Community. Everyone who ever dealt with Dr. Peter Kloot immediately recognised that here was a person of the highest integrity, who not only wore a black kippah, but strived to live by the ideals and standards it represented for him personally and to the outside world. Peter inherently understood the role of a professional leader in a community organisation, always maintaining strict professional neutrality whenever any machloikes flared up, even when this put him in a difficult position with close friends. Those who understood just how important this neutral stance was, and how it enabled an organisation to continue functioning in difficult times, were extremely grateful that we had a professional of his ilk in the driver s seat when times were tough. So many people in the Mizrachi organisation and in the wider community have lost a friend, a confidant and a person who always got the job done quietly and efficiently. It is a consolation to Peter s family that their much loved husband, father, father in law, and pappa, left behind the most valuable yerusha of all, a Shem Tov. Message from Viera & Robert Eichel W e got to meet the Kloot family in Adelaide in the 1970 s How we met them comes straight out of Pirkei Avot, as R. Hillel says in a place where there are no men strive to be a man. The Kloot family, despite having a new baby and both having full time professions were pillars of the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation. Their Hachnassat orchim made us comfortable in a town where we know nobody, Peter introduced himself, said welcome on the first Shabbos we were in Adelaide and we never looked back. Peter worked tirelessly for the Shul and the community, nothing was too much trouble, nor was Peter reticent in highlighting issues that effected the community.

Peter learned regularly in Adelaide where precious little Torah learning went on, his influence helped us spiritually, it would have been just too easy to slowly slip down the ladder a thousand miles from home. Peter was a mensch in the full Yiddish meaning of the term, we are forever grateful to Peter for his friendship, his sage advice and the pleasure of his intelligent well informed company. We miss you Peter. Message from Rosie Elsass Ihad the privilege of working with Peter for many years at Mizrachi. He was a man of infinite compassion, thoughtful, wise, fair, kind and respectful of others, an honourable and tireless worker for the Mizrachi Organisation and later on, beyond. Without doubt his passing is a loss most deeply felt by Shosh, Paul, Laura, Debby and their families but also to many friends and colleagues whose admiration of him was unquestioning. Message from Belinda & David Fisher It is with sadness but pride that I share my feelings on the recent passing of Peter Z L He was my Sunday School teacher in Adelaide over 45 years ago. The classes were inspiring and he was very particular about our exact reading in ivrit from the siddur. Peter also taught our year of girls their Bat Mitzvah, providing us with a wealth of knowledge and advice that we would utilise though out our lives. He was a dedicated, warm and special person concerned about each student in his charge. I remember walking to his and Shosh s home when Paul was a baby for Shabbat lunch. They had the whole class, this was as you can imagine a unique experience in our little Adelaide community! No one other than the Rabbi and the Kloots walked anywhere on Shabbat!! He was a wonderful role model of chessed and kindness. Many years later Peter rang me one evening before Yoni s Bar Mitzvah, and he asked us If David and you don t mind, he would love to teach Yoni his leining or help with the dvar torah or halachot regarding tefillin. He said that when he went upstairs, he wanted to be able to say that he had taught two generations of the same family. Peter, our teacher and role model of a mensch, you have taught more than two generations in our family. David and I wish you could have taught our grandchildren as well. We will miss you. We wish Shosh, Paul, Laura and Debbie and extended family and grandchildren strength and good memories. Hamakom yenachem etchem b toch shaar avalei tzion v Yerusahalyim

Message from Danny Ginsbourg One of the ' highlights ' of the Yom Kippur תפילה is the piyut ' מראה כהן ', which describes the joyous scene when the Cohen Hagadol completes the day's avoda. בן צבי הכהן ז ל by,הכנסת ספר תורה We experienced the same type of joy at the in Modi'in a few months ago. Especially apt since the area has a close link with earlier פנחס heroic,כהנים the Macabiim - the very place which was to be his final resting place. Whilst Peter was unable at this occasion to express his joy in words, his face literally glowed with joy. All who had the זכות to be present felt that they were experiencing a unique moment in their lives, and not just Peter's. The ראשונים teach that ' אין שמחה כשמחת מצוות ' - there is no joy comparable to the joy of performing a mitzvah'. Peter ז ל was meticulous in his מידות ועבודת ה - how fitting that he had the zechut to perform the last of the מצוות given in the Torah, which not all merit: the writing of a sefer torah! Whilst sadly Peter was taken from us on Erev Shavuot, this too has a special significance; we are taught that קדמה דרך ארץ לתורה, loosely translated as ' good. Torah' precede the מידות Peter was a living example of a mensh - impeccable in his midot, towards Hashem and, perhaps rarer, towards his fellow man. How appropriate therefore that he should be called to של מעלה,הישיבה on the eve of Place. received the Torah anew in his Eternal Resting דרך ארץ - the model of זמן מתן תורתנו His memory is truly a blessing to all who had the זכות to know him. Message from Ron Goldschlager It has been my absolute privilege to have known & to have personally worked with the late Dr Peter Kloot. It was also my honour to have had the zechut to have been able to attend Modi'in last Tuesday & to have participated in his burial, together with his close family & friends. The Pessukim which Paul shared with us all at Modi in, being his Dad's favourites, say it all!!! May I please share, that in my experience in life, there are "few Peter Kloots Peter was blessed to be a tremendous Mensch & Shosh & their three children reflect his Middoth. Over the years from 1988 till only very recently I always knew & could also feel what a special human being Peter was & had been, throughout his life. Peter is now in Gan Eden, actively mediating for us & doing his Teffillah with great Kavanah for Am Yisrael. May we all be Blessed with Good Health & Mazel.

Everything he did, his very being was filled with tremendous נ ו ה,ע humility. He was such a gentle, kind, thoughtful and patient man. My father's seat in Shule was directly in front of his and for many, many years I had the Zechut of davening directly in front of him. You can learn a lot from someone observing how they daven - I certainly learned a lot from him. No matter the distraction around him - people coming and going, wrapping their teffilin or talking, he remained focused and steadfast in his Teffilah. He always shared a short vort on the Parsha with me whenever I davened at the the Hashcamah minyan on Shabbat. Torah learning was very central to his life. I was also fortunate to work alongside and interact him regularly throughout my teen and college years in both Bnei Akiva and Kosher Australia. A very fine professional as well, always patient and caring with a genuine desire to help anyone. Peter also always greeted you when you saw him. It wasn't just a hello; you felt a genuine interest and care. 22 Message from Michael Neuhauser Peter Kloot, Z.L was a dedicated, decent and respectable person. It was a compliment to know him. His religious admiration to Judaism was exceptional. His daily Shiurim and every aspect to learning Talmud was well known. May his Neshama rest in the Gan Eden Message from Kasriel Oliver It was my great pleasure and privilege to work for many years together with Dr Peter Kloot - Reb Pinchas ben Reb Tzvi hakohen a"h. He was the epitome of a manager who is simultaneously a leader and high achiever, as well as a humble and unassuming team player - there was no "I" in his management of our kashrut team. His demeanour and his approach to work was simultaneously seriously conscientious as well as cheerful and pleasant. I always admired his "Yirat Shamayim", and his strongly ethical approach to all issues of managing Mizrachi Kashrut. He was a true "Mensch" - a man of total integrity. If there was ever an issue that involved a suggestion that may compromise kashrut standards or standards of ethics, that suggestion was out of bounds in Peter's world. Peter consistently sought to make a "Kiddush Hashem", and to avoid a "Chillul Hashem" at all costs. My exchanges with him were always mutually respectful, and I was enriched by having been his colleague. I learnt a great deal from him, and for that I thank him. He was a truly great man. Peter was highly skilled in administration and management. Thus, he was instrumental in creating the appropriate infrastructure to transform Mizrachi Kashrut, which was then renamed Melbourne Kashrut, into a professional provider of accredited kosher certification to the food industry. Kosher Australia would not be the flourishing Kashrut organisation that it is today, if not for the quality and quantity of Peter's immense contribution. King Solomon said (Kohelet 7:1) "Tov sheim mishemen tov" - a good name is better than a good oil. May the good name and example that he showed us continue to be an inspiration for us. My hope is that in "Gan Eden" he is deriving much nachas from our achievements in the field of kashrut, in which he worked so tirelessly, with total dedication. Yehi zichro baruch.

Message from Dr. Moshe Pinchuk Seventeen years ago the Pinchuk family arrived at the Mizrachi Congregation to serve a three year shlichut and found the Mizrachi Bet Medrash. This was our first time out of the Warm-house of the Yeshiva and naturally had no inkling of the ways of the outside world. I cannot imagine us surviving, much less succeeding, without the constant warm guiding and calming hand of Peter Kloot z l. Peter was always there to give good and sound advice how to achieve goals that seemed frustratingly impossible. On this occasion I would like to reiterate a few words I said at our farewell at the Mizrachi in 2001: Peter Kloot A Tzaddik in our time. What this tsaddik does quietly with dedication and love for the Mizrachi congregation goes beyond words. I have never seen him angry, never heard a denigrating word leave his lips. His sensitivity to the other is acute and sharp. It has been a pleasure and an edifying experience to work with him during these years. I truly hope some of his wonderful attributes have rubbed off on me in the course of this time. יהי זכרו ברוך Message from Jeremy Rapke Peter was a man of enormous intellect, vitality and commitment, whose contribution to the Jewish community of Australia will be everlasting. He was imbued with great wisdom, integrity and ahavat Yisrael and was utterly incapable of speaking ill of anyone. As was said of David Hamelech, so may it be said of Peter he walked before Hashem with truth and justice and uprightness of heart. We have all lost a noble and decent man. May his memory be a blessing. Message from Shmuel and Shavi Slodowitz Peter was the perfect example of honesty, warmth & Middot Tovot in all areas of his life. He was what we all should aspire to. be. He will be missed by all whose life he touched, those memories may stay with us.

Message from Eva & Ben Slonim He embodied chessed and showered time, energy and treasure upon countless institutions and the community at large. He lived with integrity, principle, generosity, love of Zionism, and devotion to education and the Jewish community. Message from Theo and Sue Tempelhof Peter Kloot (z'l) was the epitome of Mentchlechkeit. He and his wonderful family impacted all around them. Their home was a refuge for visitors from around the world. With Shosh's natural ability to be a relaxed hostess, all felt very welcome to their Shabbat table. Peter's counsel was always wise. He had a unique ability to stay calm in a crisis- and during his time as CEO of Mizrachi, there were many. Our community is the poorer for his passing, and we have lost a true friend. We wish family Kloot Yamim Aruchim, and pray they all enjoy continued good health for many years to come.

COMMUNITY STATEMENT RE INCREASED SECURITY 17 June 2015 Over the past two months there have been two terrorist plots thwarted in Melbourne and other counter-terrorism activity around the country. It follows 12 months of heightened activity in which law enforcement agencies have conducted raids, made arrests and charged Australians with terrorism-related offences. CSG has uncovered new & current intelligence which indicates that a radicalised person may attack the Melbourne Jewish community. No particular facility or organisation has been identified and no particular timeframe has been specified. CSG conveyed the information to Victoria Police and other Australian security agencies and is working in collaboration with those organisations to verify its authenticity and respond accordingly. Prior to last Shabbat (12/13 June) CSG enacted its internal escalation plan. A number of actions were taken including upgrading operational coverage, briefing community leadership and issuing an initial security bulletin to community organisations which requested increased vigilance from all community members. CSG s increased operational coverage will continue as the investigation into this matter is ongoing. We are now looking to you, our community members, to take measures to ensure our community remains safe. You can do this by: Increasing your awareness of any form of suspicious activity; Reporting this activity to CSG via the 24/7 emergency hotline; Giving consideration to upskilling yourself via one of CSG s security awareness programs visit We wish to reassure community members that with CSG s increased security presence and the vigilance of community members, Jewish community activities will continue as normal.
