1 The Beth Israel Bulletin A Publication of Beth Israel Synagogue September 2016 ~ Av/Elul 5776 G E T R E A D Y! The first day of Rosh Hashanah of October 3. Get ready with Rabbi Ari s High Holiday Prep Classes. See Page 4 for the class schedule. Rabbi Ari Dembitzer, Rabbi Summer is ending and we once again return to the rush of the new school year and the upcoming high holidays. The Hebrew month that comes before the high holidays is "Elul". The rabbis tell us many different ideas about the name of this month. The most famous is "ani l dodi v dodi li" - I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me. As we approach the holidays we have to take that step to come close to our creator. We have to reaffirm our commitment to understanding the point of our lives. We brought Rabbi Shlomo Abramovich to Omaha to help us reach more people and to reach people more deeply to make each of us understand how and why to be a Jew. I invite you all to take advantage of the myriad of classes and opportunities offered at Beth Israel by Rabbi Shlomo and I. If you have ideas for classes, please let us know and we will make every effort to accommodate your request. May we come close to our beloved, who in turn will come close to us. Rabbi Shlomo Abramovich, Visiting Scholar This is my first article for the Beth Israel Bulletin, so I first I want to introduce myself. I am Shlomo Abramovich. My family and I moved here in early August from Israel. We lived in Akko, and I was a rabbi in the Yeshiva of Akko. I have a semicha from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, and have PhD in Jewish history. I am working as a visiting scholar at Beth Israel, and will be teaching several classes in addition to helping with youth programming. My wife, Hodaya, worked in Israel as an educator counselor and an English teacher in high school near Akko. She has MA in educational counseling. Hodaya is working as a Jewish studies teacher at Friedel Jewish Academy. We have three boys: Shilo, in the 4th grade and Oz in kindergarten, both at Friedel. Malachi, age 2 1/2, is attending the CDC. In Hebrew, the word Jew - Yehudi, is connected to the word Toda, which means thanks. To be a Jew means knowing how to be grateful. We can learn from the large number of blessings we have, which are our way to say thanks to G-d for what he gives us. At that point, my family and I want to say great thanks to all the good people of our community who have helped us so much to feel at home, here in Omaha. There is an entire holiday season dedicated to the process of Teshuva. Selichot (apologies) The high holidays officially begin the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. Selichot is perhaps the most spiritual event of the year and sets the tone for the entire season. Kever Avot (Kever - graves; Avot - ancestors) We visit the cemetery before the Yamim Noraim to ask Hashem that in the merit of the righteous, He grant us a good year. (See box to left for service times.) Rosh Hashanah (Rosh - beginning; Hashanah - the year) The day that commemorates Adam and Eve s creation. The beginning of a year is a time to reflect on the year past and to make resolutions for the year to come. Tzom Gedaliah (Tzom - fast; Gedaliah - man s name) This day commemorates the tragic events that led to the end of the last semblance of Jewish sovereignty after the First Temple s destruction. Aseret Yemei Teshuvah (Aseret - 10; Yemei - Days; Teshuva - Repentence) The ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur are to be spent asking Tashlich (to throw) Around the time of Rosh Hashanah, it is a widely accepted custom to go to a river and recite a few selected prayers. The practice has come to be known as Tashlich because we recite a verse from the book of Micha where the prophet says, And cast (Tashlich) into the depths of the sea all of their sins. Yom Kippur (Yom - day; Kippur - atonement) The day commemorating Hashem s granting us atonement for worshiping the golden calf. A spiritual day when we shun the physical by fasting and immersing ourselves completely in prayer. Sukkot (Sukkah - temporary home) This festival commemorates Hashem s constant protection for forty years in the desert. We eat in the sukkah and pray for rain with the Lulav and Etrog. Hoshana Rabbah (the great Hoshana) The day we commemorate the festive circuits observed when we have a Beit Hamikdash. Shemini Atzeret (Shemini - eight; Atzeret - festival) The Yamim Noraim come to a close with the final day of Sukkot. During the holiday season, we are closer to Hashem than at any other point in the year. Shemini Atzerest is Hashem saying to us, Before you leave, please, just spend one more day with me. Simchat Torah (simchat - happiness) This holiday celebrates the completion of the yearly Torah reading cycle. 5
