1 The Beth Israel Bulletin A Publication of Beth Israel Synagogue November 2017 ~ Cheshvan/Kislev 5778 Rabbi Ari Dembitzer, Rabbi Nebraska winter is nearly upon us. In Hebrew, winter is called "choref, which also means to sharpen. The nights are longer, we spend more time indoors, gathering our thoughts, and sharpening our minds and hearts. Let each of us this winter make use of this opportunity and take advantage of all the learning opportunities our holy shul has to offer. Let us sharpen our minds and soften our hearts. Blessings for a cozy winter with much growth, Rabbi Ari Rabbi Shlomo Abramovich, Visiting Scholar Rav Kook had a special moto, a short sentence, for each Hebrew month. His moto for the month of Cheshvan was When the spirit shines, even foggy skies make pleasant light. At this time of the year, the days are getting shorter, the weather is starting to be not so pleasant, and everything might look quite gloomy. This is the time to remind ourselves that it all starts from within, and when it looks dark outside, it is time to light the inside. The fall and the winter are times for growth, for working on our internal sources of energy, and for learning more Torah, in order to inspire and light ourselves. Rabbi Shlomo We apologize for an October bulletin not being produced. Please note this publication includes birthdays and anniversaries for both October and November and thank you s, mazel tov s, and donations made from August 24 through October 25. For any questions, please contact Mary Sue Grossman. To Our Friends at Beth Israel Mere words cannot adequately express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the kindness shown to our family from Our Friends at Beth Israel. We were so very honored and moved upon learning that Our Friends at Beth Israel so graciously sponsored our meal of condolence after the funeral in blessed memory of our daughter, Jennifer. We thought we had a small family, how wrong we were. We are so fortunate to have the Beth Israel family in our lives. As we stated in the Jewish Press: As Beth Israel s slogan says, If you can t live in Israel, second best is Omaha. We feel it should be reversed. We have always felt, for the 32 years we have lived here, that we were living in the best Jewish community. Family of Jennifer Beth Kay, Les, Helen, Joanna, Ben, David and Matt 2
