35 A Message From Rabbi Kurland Throughout the history of the Jewish people, leadership has been lauded and respected. Some say that Judaism has always overly expressed it admiration in order to motivate future generations of leaders. There is profound meaning in this statement. Few jump at the opportunity to lead since leadership includes enormous personal sacrifice and challenge. There are so many who turn down the request most likely because they know that a good leader must take people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be. This is the greatest difficulty in the job. Therefore, our literature extols leadership hoping that the appreciation might serve to inspire. If we were to inquire of our honorees, I would not be at all surprised if many of them had to be asked more than once to take on the presidency of our Men s Club. Whatever the circumstances, we will be forever grateful that each one of them accepted the mantle. In fact, several of them accepted beyond one term and served many years. I have been blessed to have gained great insight into the history of our fine congregation. I have come to learn of the role each of our Men s Club presidents played in guiding that organization. I would assume that each one could relate to the profound words of Oliver Wendell Holmes who said, People can be divided into two classes: those who go ahead and do something, and those people who sit still and inquire, why wasn't it done the other way? And I have enjoyed the fruits of the labors of the doers from all of our Arms who helped make Nanuet Hebrew Center the wonderful congregation it has always been. And its beauty continues to be seen in so many ways. I wrote years ago that God s presence only fills the world when we pay attention and live as God s partners. It is clear to me that People to People and Diane Serratore and the entire staff and Board have been such partners. As it says in their mission statement, For decades, People to People has been assisting our community s most vulnerable families, anxious seniors and worried veterans. All of us at People to People believe that by helping our neighbors meet their basic needs, we make our a world a better place. This is exactly what it means to be God s partners. We gather today to celebrate commitment, dedication and devotion to the Nanuet Hebrew Center and to the greater community. This celebration and all celebrations should always honor those who labored to keep goodness alive in the world. We have been blessed by so many in the past. May we all remember to be part of the blessings of the future. Let our actions show our commitment. Simply put, there really are just two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. We should all try to be in the first group. After all, there is much less competition.
36 Where is the heart and soul of a synagogue found? A Message From Cantor Kanarek It's not the clergy. Not the President. Not the religious school. And not the board. No, the heart and soul of a synagogue lies in the people who make it happen- and those people are found in the auxiliaries: Sisterhood and Men's Club. Being Men s Club President is a tough job. At the risk of being sexist, let me say that overall men are not quite as sociable as women. The job of the Men s Club President is to make it worthwhile for guys to get involved. It's no easy task! And yet, over the years, we have seen the growth of the Men's Club. This is the result of the dedication and hard work of our Men's Club Presidents. Kol ha kavod (all the glory)! Because of you, our heartbeat is stronger. Speaking of dedication, the work that People to People does epitomizes that of a hardworking, caring community. From food pantry to clothes to making sure everyone can get Thanksgiving meal, People to People continues to make a difference in Rockland County. Congratulations to Executive Director Diane Serratore on receiving the Stanley Blumenthal Community Service Award. L shalom, Cantor Barry Kanarek
