Please call e office so we can welcome em, or call Anne Elovic, Chesed Fund Chair, at (847) DVAR TORAH Selichot, prayers of forgiveness and atonement, are recited at midnight, while Ashkenazic Jews recite em for at least four days prior to Rosh Hashana is year, we will begin Selichot on Motzai Shabbat, September 4, Today, because being up at midnight for so many nights is difficult, many only recite e first Selichot service in e middle of e night. The focal point of Selichot prayers is e recitation of e 13 attributes of G-d. Tradition teaches us at reciting ese attributes evokes Divine mercy. G-d Himself bestowed is tradition to Moshe Rabbenu when he ascended to e heavens to receive e Ten Commandments, Torah and Oral traditions. Rosh Hashana will begin Wednesday night September 8, and Yom Kippur will be Friday evening and Shabbat September 17 and 18. We make an Eruv Tavshillin before candle lighting on September 8, 22 and 29. This allows us to warm up food on Yom Tov for Shabbat, which begins immediately after Yom Tov. A special bracha is made over two rolls or matzot and a cooked food, commonly a piece of fish or chicken. The Bracha, which can be found in e ArtScroll Siddur (p. 654), is Baruch Ata Ad-nai (G-d s Name) El-heinu melech ha olam asher kidishanu b mitzvotav vitzivanu al mitzvat eruv. The accompanying B din Eruvah declaration should also be recited. This food must be set aside and eaten on Shabbat. Rosh Hashana - September On Friday evening, September 18, we begin e Jewish New Year of We also begin e period known as e Aseret Yemay Teshuva, Ten Days of Repentance. A most solemn time, Rosh Hashana commemorates e anniversary of mankind s creation after e creation of e world six days earlier. During e two days of Rosh Hashana, G-d judges e entire world and inscribes e fate of all life. As Jews, we recite various prayers to express our aspirations, and we eat many symbolic foods in hopes of bringing special blessings. During Rosh Hashanah, we observe e custom of Tashlich, in which we go to living bodies of water and recite prayers, us symbolically casting off our sins. A major focus of Rosh Hashana is e blowing of e shofar. One hundred kolot, or notes, blown during various portions of e service remind us of e Almighty s coronation as King of e Universe, awaken our sleeping hearts from eir leargy to return to e Almighty and help us recount e story of Abraham sacrificing a ram in place of his son. Our sages teach us at e ashes of e ram of Isaac are maintained in a bag undernea e rone of Almighty G-d. Whenever e Jewish people are in danger of being punished by e Almighty, He looks at ese ashes, remembers e actions of Abraham and Isaac and grants e Jewish people forgiveness and mercy. We pray for G-d s mercy and hope at we, like Isaac, will be spared. We also pray for forgiveness for e previous year s transgressions and implore e Creator for a year where we will perform Mitzvot unstintingly, a year of good heal, peace and prosperity on e merit of our teshuva - repentance. Tzom Gedaliah - Sunday, September 12. The fast day of Tzom Gedaliah usually takes place e day after Rosh Hashana except when, like is year, at day is Shabbat, and en we fast on Sunday. The fast commemorates e murder of Gedaliah ben Achikam, who was a Jewish leader appointed by our conquerors after e destruction of e First Temple in 586 B.C.E. Wi his assassination by one of his countrymen, Jews lost eir stake in self-rule even in e Diaspora. The fast begins at 5:16 am and ends at 7:36 pm. Yom Kippur - September Yom Kippur is e unique day of e year dedicated to forgiveness, mercy and conciliation between G-d and e Jewish people. This year it begins on Friday evening, September 17, wi e ceremony of Kol Nidre, a prayer to annul any unfulfilled oas or vows. Speech is e attribute at distinguishes man from e rest of e animal kingdom. Accordingly, we

4 are very concerned wi e punishments at may occur for deliberate or accidental transgressions concerning our speech. The holiest day of e year, Yom Kippur, commemorates G-d s forgiveness of e Israelites, whose sin was e worship of e golden calf after ey received e Ten Commandments. It is a day when we are commanded to shed our early limitations and aspire to emulate e angels. Accordingly, we abstain from eating, drinking, wearing leaer shoes, anointing, washing and marital relations. By observing ese prohibitions, we transcend our physical existence and are elevated to a higher spiritual state, so we are better able to pray for ourselves, our loved ones, our families and for all of Israel. On Yom Kippur, G-d evaluates our actions during e Ten Days of Repentance and determines wheer our actions were sincere or empty. On e merit of repentance, prayer and charity, we are able to avert e severe decree at may have been ordained during Rosh Hashanah. As we have been forgiven in e past rough positive and sincere acts of repentance, may we be forgiven in e future. We pray for a new year filled wi all of G-d s blessings for us, our extended families and for all our people. Sukkot begins Wednesday evening, September 22, and continues rough September 30. It commemorates e time when G-d took e Jewish people out of Egypt and housed em in e Annanei Hakavod - Clouds of Glory at protected e Jewish people; erefore we dwell in sukkot, or temporary huts. Sukkot is e holiday of perfection, completion and e Jewish people s greatest joy. The first two days of Sukkot are known as yom tov (holidays) where most melechah (creative activity) is prohibited. They are followed by Chol Hamoed (Intermediate Days), which are hybrid, in at ey have aspects of bo holidays and regular week days. Sukkot is also called Chag Haasif - Festival of e Gaering, when we look back at e recently concluded growing season and take great pride in our achievements. However, even ough Sukkot is a most joyous time, it is also a time of great spiritual danger. Jews must never believe at e great bounty and blessing bestowed upon em was achieved solely rough eir efforts, or at e bounty is e ultimate goal. It is e Almighty who bestows such abundance for e purpose of enabling our spiritual development and perfection. Accordingly, we leave our comfortable homes and make e succah our permanent dwelling for an entire week. We leave e abundance of harvest time to eat and sleep in e succah, which helps us remember e Exodus from Egypt and e seven Divine clouds which enveloped e Jewish people from e nor, sou, east, west, above, below and in front, at sheltered us during our travels in e wilderness. By leaving our homes, we realize at unless e Divine presence is ere to protect us, we are not safe even in e largest, most fortified castle. When eating in e succah, we invite seven Ushpizin or guests. These guests were e essential leaders of e Jewish people: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron and King David. We invite ese guests because each represents one of e seven spiritual attributes needed to perfect our souls in service of e Creator. Jewish mysticism explains ese characteristics to include: kindness, valor, splendor, eternity, glory, foundation, and kingship. Every day of Sukkot, wi e exception of Shabbat, when ey are not touched, one blessing is recited over e four species - e Etrog, Lulav, Hadasim and Aravot. The first time we take em on e holiday, is year e second day, we also recite Shehechiyanu. The four species are also used in e Hallel prayer, which is a prayer at praises and anks e Almighty. Prior to e conclusion of e morning prayers, a Torah is taken out of e Ark and brought to e bimah - central podium. Congregants recite special prayers while holding e four species in eir hands and make one complete Hakafa (revolution or circuit) around e Torah and Bimah in commemoration of e circuits at were made in e Temple. On e last of e intermediate days, known as Hoshanah Rabbah, seven circuits are made, after which willows are beaten on e floor to symbolize e end of e high holiday period of judgement. Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah September 30, October 1 and 2 - At Sukkot s end, Jews immediately celebrate e holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. The Midrash, or Bible commentary, teaches at on Sukkot we are concerned wi all humanity because in e Temple we offered 70 sacrifices during Sukkot, corresponding to e 70 nations of e world. However, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah is a holiday just for e Almighty and e Jewish people. The holidays remind us at material needs and wants are fleeting illusions; e realm of e spirit is e only true and permanent domain. We recite e Yizkor, or memorial prayer, during Shemini Atzeret to remember ose who have gone before us and set out pas for us to follow. On Simchat Torah, Jews dance and rejoice wi eir entire being as we conclude e reading of e Torah, and en, immediately begin reading e Torah once again. In spite of tremendous adversity, oppression and exile, we have been promised at e Torah will always guard and protect us. Even if all else is taken away from e Jewish people, e Torah will always remain. And Repentance, Prayer and Charity remove e unfavorable judgement Kesser Maariv Pushkas (Tzedaka Boxes) Are Available. Call e Office to pick one up. We would like to ank all of our hard-working volunteers for e tremendous efforts you show and for all of e hard work at you do. Our Shul is lucky to have such capable people willing and ready to help. äáåè äðùì
