3 RABBI S MESSAGE Israel: Time for a visit! by Rabbi Cory Weiss Ihope everyone had a refreshing, relaxing, and adventurous summer! I, for one, spent a few nights in Stratford at the theatre with Karen; studied for a week in Cincinnati (along with visiting my son Michael who is studying at Hebrew Union College); and took Karen to NYC to see The Band s Visit, this year s Tony winner for Best Musical. The show was wonderful, and when it comes to Toronto, you must go see it! As always, I spent a week at Camp George on faculty one of the highlights of the summer (see the photo of the first session campers and staff, below). As the holidays approach, we are working hard to offer you beautiful and meaningful worship and the opportunity to think and grow on our Jewish journey. Part of that journey is to consider our love and relationship with Eretz Yisrael. It has been a challenging year for the Jewish state: politically, militarily, and Jewishly. I ll be speaking about some of those challenges on Kol Nidre this year, so stay tuned. I also realize that it s time for Temple Har Zion to make a visit. We had very successful congregational trips in 2008, 2010, and 2014, and many of you have asked when we can go back. The answer is soon! I d like to schedule a trip for November-December 2019, and would love to see a full bus of Har Zionists join Karen and me in the Promised Land. We will see all of the important sites, and I hope we ll have a chance to get a close-up look at what s happening in Israel: our growing Reform Movement, the security situation, working toward peace and, of course, the beautiful landscapes and history of our people. Details of dates and costs will follow, but I would love to know that you re interested in joining us. Please get in touch with me if you d like to be on our list. And if you d like to help as an organizer, I would welcome that too. This trip will be a great one for first-timers and for many-timers too. And thanks to visiting our son Michael a couple of years ago while he was in his first year at HUC, I know a lot of the great secret places to eat in Jerusalem I promise to take you for some great eats! Shanah Tovah um tukah a good and sweet New Year, Rabbi Cory Weiss First session THZ campers and staff at Camp George. September 2018, Elul 5778/Tishrei 5779 Page 3

4 EXECUTIVE MESSAGE Our individual and collective responsibility to Holocaust survivors by Dan Goldberg, vice president Many of the fortunate among us celebrate Rosh HaShanah with family and friends in comfortable homes, around a dining room table full of delicious food. The High Holy Days are a wonderful time of year to be self-reflective and grateful for all that we have. It is also a time of year to see what we can do to better ourselves both individually and as part of a community. Last year, the Toronto Star published an article addressing poverty among Holocaust survivors in the GTA. I was both shaken and heartbroken by the breadth and depth of this poverty in our own community. In researching this issue, I learned that one quarter of survivors in Canada and one third of survivors in the United States live in poverty. All of these individuals are living out their remaining years juggling their resources to pay for food and rent. Most are in declining health. While there is some aid for these individuals, it is far from adequate. As we know, Holocaust survivors have suffered mentally and physically in various ways. One of those ways was the deliberate stripping of their dignity. It is up to our community to not allow this loss of dignity to perpetuate. The survivors should not have to again survive the indignity of poverty and hunger. I hope that you agree that we can and must do better individually and as part of the Jewish community toward fellow Jews who have experienced significant lifelong challenges. The food collected during this year s High Holy Days food drive will, once again, go to the Markham Food Bank. After this time, all food collected at our Temple will go to the Kosher Food Bank. Many of their clients are survivors. So if you wish to donate dry and canned foods after the holidays, please ensure that your donation is marked kosher. If you wish to make a monetary donation to Holocaust survivors, you can do so by placing your donation in the Tzedakah box in the Temple lobby and/or donating to the Temple Har Zion Kosher Food Fund, either online or by calling the Temple office. Monetary donations can also be made to the donations line at Jewish Family & Child Services ( ); please specify that your donation go exclusively to Holocaust survivors. As we celebrate the new year, let s remember those in our community who truly need us. Let s show these individuals that we have not forgotten them and that we never will. Shanah Tovah Bringing current Israel to THZ by Benjie Gruber Shalom, friends, I am writing to you after spending two amazing weeks at Temple Har Zion. It has been truly wonderful. I was so happy to be back on the bimah with Hazzanit Tara Abrams to worship with many friendly and familiar faces, and to witness that indeed you really have a summer here in Toronto! Leading services outside in the Davis-Yacht garden was beautiful. In fact, it was the first time I have experienced the need to wear sunglasses during a service! One of my favourite activities at THZ is Torah Study, and I was very happy to once again study with a fantastically enthusiastic group of people. We discussed Israel and Diaspora relations, Reform Judaism in Israel and the similarities and differences between being a Jew here and being a Jew there. I am so grateful to Brena Taylor for having the vision to make this visit happen and for taking care of all of the logistics. Steve and Marie Borlak, Ubby and Evelyn Krakauer, and David and Robin Teeger were extremely generous and gracious. I could not have had these two special weeks here without their support. I would also like to express gratitude to Shelley and Ken Glick for sponsoring the Shabbaton, at which I was honoured and privileged to teach side-by-side with Rabbi Stroh. Apparently we do not have a definitive answer about God, but we agree that we are on a journey to understand it all. Thanks for the journey. I now head back home with a smile on my face and great memories. Come see me in Israel. Benjie Page 4 September 2018, Elul 5778/Tishrei 5779

8 SISTERHOOD NEWS Exciting news by Elaine Stein As you know, our Sisterhood is part of a greater body not only part of Temple Har Zion, but also part of the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ), an organization with members across North America and affiliates around the world. On Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, WRJ Northeast District is having an Area Day in Toronto at Holy Blossom Temple. The women of Temple Har Zion are invited to attend. You do not have to be a member of our Sisterhood. The day is titled Kol Isha The Voice of a Woman. It will be an opportunity to meet other women from reform congregations across the GTA, as well as New England and New York. One of the activities will be a discussion of the role of women in social justice, featuring speakers from WRJ, Religious Action Centre and National Council of Jewish Women Canada. More details to follow. Our Sisterhood has been busy, too! We held a successful evening on August 14 that started with chair yoga, moved on to refreshing smoothies and concluded with an informative board meeting. The summer is a time for planning, and we have some great programs lined up. On Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, we will have Osnat Lippa speak on Chaim Soutine, a Jewish Russian-French painter who made a major contribution to the expressionist movement while he was living in Paris. This evening is being held as a tribute to Carol Austin, Z L. On Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, we will present Eve Townsend, speaking about costume jewelry. Do you want to become more involved? We are happy to have you join us on one of our committees or to help with a specific event. We can be contacted at sisterhood@harzion.ca, or you can call the Temple office at , and we will get back to you. Shanah Tovah, Elaine Stein Page 8 September 2018, Elul 5778/Tishrei 5779

12 SOCIAL ACTION Charity and justice by Fran Isaacs There were a couple of articles in the CJN recently that brought to light the importance of both charity and justice. In one article, the kosher food bank at Pride of Israel announced that it was in danger of closing due to lack of community support and funding. In the other article, the Jewish women s group, Act to End Violence Against Women, formerly Jewish Women International of Canada, was closing its doors at the end of August. Both of these organizations were started to fill a need in the community that was not being met. In the case of the food bank, it cites the following statistics: Close to 25,000 Jews in the GTA, including more than 5,000 seniors and 3,500 children, live in poverty (numbers come from United Jewish Appeal). Pride of Israel serves many elderly Russian immigrants, but it does not ask whether they are Jewish. Anyone who is in need can pick up food on Wednesday mornings. Pride of Israel estimates that it needs at least $800 per week to remain viable. Over the years, many of its kosher food suppliers have moved down to the United States. Pride of Israel has sent letters to 30 Jewish institutions, including Temple Har Zion, for help. In the case of Act to End Violence, the organization reached out to UJA Federation and Jewish Family & Child Services (JF & CS) about integrating some of the agencies work, but funding is an issue. The charity part is that we can help with the food bank by having food drives and making monetary donations. The same with the shelter. Monica Auerbach, director of JF & CS says that lack of funding is the issue. She went on to say that the shelter that the two agencies run will close at the end of September. Auerbach says, It s based on Jewish values (the shelter), so it s easier for women who have been victims of domestic violence to receive support where their culture and religion are understood and respected. It s a huge loss. The justice part is raising your voices, whether by phone, or letter. Our politicians need to know that you want food security for everyone. Families need to have enough money to pay their rent and eat. There is a need for education about violence against women, and to provide help to those women who are suffering abuse and need a safe place to turn to and aid in navigating the legal world. Shelters must get adequate funding. This October there are a couple of opportunities to help us raise our voices. On Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, all women are invited to the Women of Reform Judaism Northeast District Area Day for Kol Isha The Voices of Women Together for Social Justice at Holy Blossom Temple. You do not have to be a Sisterhood member to attend. See the flyer below. Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018 marks this year s Peace Meal event, to be held at Temple Har Zion. We will be exploring the themes of charity and justice. We will hear from organizations that try to provide both. This is open to everyone. Bring a vegan dish to share. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, a.m. to 2 p.m. Annual Food Drive The High Holy Days are fast approaching; don t forget to bring non-perishable items with you from Erev Rosh HaShanah through the afternoon of Yom Kippur to be donated to the Markham Food Bank. See the flyer for more details. High Holy Days are earlier in the month this year so your donations will have a great impact in helping to keep the shelves stocked until Thanksgiving. Mosaic Interfaith Join us on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, from 2 to 5 p.m. for the Annual Peace Meal, Charity and Justice, at Temple Har Zion. How are these concepts different? Why do we need both? How do we move from charity to justice? Why do we need to move from charity to justice? What does moving from charity to justice look like? Join us on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018, from 2 to 4 p.m. for From Abraham Three Faiths: Can the Violence in Our Scriptures Justify Violence in Today s World? Our annual presentation features Rabbi Michael Stroh, Rev. John Hill and Dr. Liyakat Takim. 13 SOCIAL ACTION An important community announcement Pride of Israel Kosher Food Bank Dear friends, For more than 20 years, and with the support of key benefactors and the work of volunteers, Pride of Israel Synagogue has operated a kosher food bank providing nourishment each week for up to 150 families and individuals in need. Many of these individuals are Holocaust survivors who are living in poverty. Unfortunately, many of the key benefactors have been unable to continue their support and the Kosher Food Bank is in dire need of kosher food and the funds to purchase them. Although it is fully understood that not every one in the Jewish community adheres to the laws of kashrut, it would be a failure of our community if the needs of those who seek kosher food are ignored. It is important to recognize that, even in our diversity, we are all brothers and sisters, and the importance of being tolerant of other practices and views is necessary to sustain a strong, healthy and united Jewish community. Temple Har Zion would like to help those less fortunate in our community who rely on Kosher food items. There are three ways to help: (1) Please put donations in our Tzedekah Box, located in the main lobby. (2) Please donate to the Kosher Food Fund. Donations may be made on line or by calling the Temple Office. (3) After the High Holy Days, when you make food donations at Temple, please ensure that they are Kosher-only items. We appreciate your consideration. Let s work together to keep our community alive! For many years, Temple Har Zion has supported the Markham Food Bank through our Yom Kippur food drive, and we will continue to do so. They rely heavily on our contributions.
