First of all L Shannah Tov to all, and to your families. It should be a year of peace, health and happiness to all around the world. While we are on the topic of peace, Temple Beth Ami and the BVM Catholic Church (both located at Welsh Road & Old Bustleton Avenue) will again be doing a joint candlelight vigil and service on Monday, September 11, 2006 at 7:00 PM. This will be the 5th anniversary of this event so please attend if you can. This is the start of our 70th year, so let s make it a banner year. I know that Howard Rabinovitch is lining up some excellent speakers for our meetings this season. Mike Roeshman and Frank Squillace (who has now been promoted to Lieutenant) will be doing our annual Fire Prevention month demonstration at the October meeting. Now all you have to do is just come, and oh yes, tell a friend too. I also want to thank Mike & Josephine Gilbert for a most wonderful job on the banquet last June. It was a very heartfelt banquet. We honored Captain Brian Weiss of the New Orleans Police Department and his lovely wife Brooke who is very active in the Jewish community helping to rebuild the city. And we must not forget our longtime friends of Shomrim, Bob & Shelby Ford for their generous gift in funding our scholarships. Bob & Shelby will be our Humanitarian awardees for our 2007 banquet. And last but not least, the honoring of our own chaplain, Cantor Alan Edwards, our recipient of this year s Humanitarian award. I suggest we do the Mench of the year so we can honor Alan every year, not only for the work he does in our community, but for the world. We will be sponsoring, along with National President Mike Gilbert and Chaplain Alan Edwards a trip to New Orleans to help rebuild the Jewish community in that town. The dates are Sunday, October 22 through Thursday, October 26, For more info, contact me or Mike. Our numbers are in the Herald. We need a count ASAP so we can arrange for a block of rooms at a government rate. Transportation will be on you. Delta & Air Tran have the best prices and times and both go through Atlanta. Earlier this year I made a comment about Zulima Farber and her baggage, being appointed to the post of Attorney General of N.J. She ended up embarrassing Governor John Corzine, who then asked for and got her resignation. The new Attorney General, Stuart Ravner, should be a fine Attorney General for the citizens of N.J. and the law enforcement community. Thank you, Governor Corzine. The Family Day Picnic this year has been scheduled on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. I was told that it was a terrible mistake, but due to commitments, it could not be rescheduled. Can you imagine if we scheduled an event on Easter or XMAS!!!!!! We have been having a little success in signing new members. Jerry Marks has been on the phone finding and resigning some former members who had dropped out for one reason or another and I have signed a few from the Atlantic City area. I m asking all members to try to find at least one person in Public Safety or anyone who would like to be an associate member and lets try to sign them up. We need to get some young blood in the organization to keep it going for another 70 years! In closing, I want to again wish you and yours a Healthy and Happy New Year. L Shannah Tovu, tike savu. See you at the meetings, be safe - Merrill

4 Message from our Chaplain, Cantor Alan Edwards: High Holiday Greetings: As we prepare to usher in this coming year of 5767, we thank G-d for having sustained us and kept us in life to reach this day. For some of our members, this has been a year of joy and happiness; for others, of sorrow and sadness. Yet each and every one of us has indeed so much for which to be thankful. In Jewish tradition we are bidden to thank G-d each and every day that we can experience the world and its pleasures. Baruch Hashem Yom Yom - Blessed is G-d each and every day. With Spirit, as we begin this New Year, we pray for a year of health, happiness and prosperity. May this year see an era of peace come to our people in Israel and to all humanity. May we, individually, be thankful for life and its manifold blessings. O harken to the call of the Shofar! Heed the message of G-d, Torah and tradition! Listen to the voices that speak to us, each in our own way! Seek faith and light wherever it may be found! For yearning is the price of admission and salvation the promise of a new day! On behalf of my dear family, we wish all our members and their families a year filled with health and happiness and a very sweet year. Chaplain Alan Edwards. Helpful suggestions: (From the net -) Forwarded by Merrill Kelem: If you get a permanent marker stain on appliances or counter tops just use rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and rub it out. Blood stains on clothes? Pour a little hydrogen peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe it off. If it s a perp s blood, go to the nearest hospital and have the Haz-Mat team remove soiled articles of clothing, then make sure you get deloused. BOUNCE this along: The U.S. Postal Service notified all letter carriers to keep a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets as this will keep yellow jackets away. Also use them when working or playing outside. It really works. 1. It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet down near them. It also repels mice. 2. Spread sheets around foundations, in trailers, or cars that are sitting. It keeps mice from entering your vehicle. 3. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don t get opened too often. 4. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season. 5. Eliminate static electricity from your TV or computer screen. 6. Wipe your TV screen with a used sheet to keep dust from resettling. 7. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of bounce. 8. To freshen the air in your home, put a sheet in in a drawer or hang in a closet, 9. Put a sheet in the vacuum cleaner. 10. To prevent thread from tangling, run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew. 11. To prevent musty suitcases, place a sheet inside empty luggage before storing. 12. To freshen the air in your car, place a sheet under the front seat. 13. To clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan - put a sheet in the pan, fill with water and let sit overnight and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan. 14. To eliminate odors in wastebaskets, place a sheet of Bounce in the bottom of the wastebasket. 15. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet will magnetically attract all the loose hairs. 16. Eliminate static electricity from venetian blinds. Wiping the blinds with a sheet will prevent dust from resettling. 17. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand-papering. A used sheet will collect sawdust like a tack cloth. 18. Eliminates odors in dirty laundry. Place a sheet at the bottom of the hamper or laundry bag. 19. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Put a sheet in your shoes or sneakers overnight. 20. Put a sheet in your sleeping bag or tent before folding and storing them. Page 4
