1 Acharei Mot-Kedoshim April 28, Iyar 5778 Torah portion: Acharei Mot: Page 480 Kedoshim: Page 497 Haftorah: Page 509 SHABBAT SHALOM A warm welcome to our guests ACHAREI MOT-KEDOSHIM Leviticus 16:1 20:27 We welcome you and are pleased that you have joined us to worship. We hope you will feel welcome whenever you are in town. If you are a new resident to our area, please introduce yourself so we can properly welcome you and tell you more about our wonderful congregation and community. SCHEDULE Candle Lighting 4/27 7:37 PM Morning Service 4/28 9:30 AM Shabbat Ends 4/28 8:39 PM Candle Lighting 5/4 7:44 PM DAILY MINYAN If you are in need of a Minyan for a Yahrzeit for a loved one please contact Paul Walsky at or him at paulwalsky@yahoo.com or call Jody Goldsmith at or him at jody_goldsmith@hotmail.com. VOLUNTEERS Since we are short staffed in the office, for the time being, anyone willing to help out with answering the phone and letting people into the building, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Just a couple of hours would be a great help. If you are willing to help out, please call Shirley Aronson at Following the deaths of Nadav and Avihu, G d warns against unauthorized entry into the holy. Only one person, the kohen gadol ( high priest ), may, but once a year, on Yom Kippur, enter the innermost chamber in the Sanctuary to offer the sacred ketoret to G d. Another feature of the Day of Atonement service is the casting of lots over two goats, to determine which should be offered to G d and which should be dispatched to carry off the sins of Israel to the wilderness. The Parshah of Acharei also warns against bringing korbanot (animal or meal offerings) anywhere but in the Holy Temple, forbids the consumption of blood, and details the laws prohibiting incest and other deviant sexual relations. The Parshah of Kedoshim begins with the statement: You shall be holy, for I, the L rd your G d, am holy. This is followed by dozens of mitzvot (divine commandments) through which the Jew sanctifies him- or herself and relates to the holiness of G d. These include: the prohibition against idolatry, the mitzvah of charity, the principle of equality before the law, Shabbat, sexual morality, honesty in business, honor and awe of one s parents, and the sacredness of life. Also in Kedoshim is the dictum which the great sage Rabbi Akiva called a cardinal principle of Torah, and of which Hillel said, This is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary Love your fellow as yourself. 1
2 REFUAH SH LEIMA (Speedy Recovery) Amira Goldsmith, Cheryl Morgan, and Michael Snyder May the Holy One, Blessed is He, be filled with compassion for them, to restore their health, to heal them, to strengthen and revivify them. May He send them a speedy and complete recovery from heaven, a recovery of the body and a recovery of the spirit, swiftly and soon. Amen. RABBI PANITZ Rabbi Panitz will be leading services on the following Shabbatot: April 28 June 2, 23 May 5, 19 July 14, 28 * We will be having a special Shabbat service on May 12 th As an ongoing addition to our Shabbat experience on the dates when Rabbi Panitz is here, Rabbi Panitz will be conducting a fascinating and insightful study session following the kiddush. 3 MERGER COMMITTEE UPDATE The Joint Merger Committee did not meet this week while it reviews its understanding of the services the chosen architect will provide. While the Committee has tentatively chosen an architecture firm, the process of architect selection did bring to light potential issues regarding building code and environmental requirements like storm water management and fire suppression that the architect wouldn t initially address. Thus, the Committee wants to explore potential requirements the City (for the KI building) and County (for the KS building) might impose on renovating either building to determine if we need to hire additional engineering consultants to determine the cost of implementing such requirements. At present, the Committee will delay contracting with the architect until we have met with the jurisdictions. This approach further delays the beginning of the architectural process. However, we don t want to start the architect thinking about designs without knowing how the jurisdictional requirements can impact available budget for either renovated building.
