1 ב"ה SHABBOS, 10 TISHREI - FRIDAY, 16 TISHREI, 5778 FRIDAY, 10 TISHREI, 5778 NIGHT OF YOM KIPPUR For local candle lighting times visit THINGS TO DO If you have enough time before Kol Nidrei, say viduy (Ashamnu, Al Chet, etc.). 1 We say kapitlach of Tehillim. Kol Nidrei (At least) three Sifrei Torah are removed from the aron kodesh. The individuals holding the Sifrei Torah stand next to the chazzan. 2 We say the kapitel of Hashem Malach, saying the possuk Or zarua latzaddik out loud. 3 The chazzan says Al daas hamakom three times in a muted tone, but loud enough for those standing next to him to hear. 4 Say Kol Nidrei along with the chazzan quietly, but loud enough for those standing next to you to hear. 5 The chazzan says Venislach three times, followed by the congregation. In the next paragraph, the congregation concludes Vayomer Hashem salachti kidvarecha three times, followed by the chazzan. 6 The chazzan says the berachah of Shehecheyanu slowly. The congregants say the berachah quickly, so they finish before the chazzan does and can answer Amen to his berachah. 7 Those who said Shehecheyanu when bentching licht should not say it now. 8

2 We return the Sifrei Torah and close the aron kodesh. Maariv We begin Kabbalas Shabbos with Mizmor Ledavid. 9 When saying Shema, we say Baruch Shem out loud. 10 In Shemoneh Esrei, we insert the additions for Shabbos. (See last week s Luach for more on the viduy said during Shemoneh Esrei.) After Shemoneh Esrei and before selichos, we say Vayechulu and Magen Avos, saying Hamelech Hakadosh instead of Hakel Hakadosh. We don t say Avinu Malkeinu. Selichos are followed by Ledavid Mizmor, Kaddish Shalem, Mizmor ledavid Hashem ro i, Chatzi Kaddish, Borchu, and Aleinu. After davening, men say the first four kapitlach of Tehillim, having in mind the nonstandard nekudos of Hashem s name as printed in the Machzor. The Rebbe instituted the custom to recite the entire Tehillim after Maariv. 11 When visiting the restroom after Maariv, touch something unclean so you will be able to wash your hands (until the knuckles). However, when visiting the restroom before Maariv or on Yom Kippur day, you may wash your hands (until the knuckles) even if you have not touched anything unclean. 12 When saying Krias Shema Al Hamitah, say Baruch Shem out loud. Omit the paragraphs omitted on Shabbos and Yom Tov. 13 Before going to sleep, say kapitlach of Tehillim. 14 SHABBOS, 10 TISHREI, 5778 DAY OF YOM KIPPUR THINGS TO DO When arising in the morning, wash negel vasser until the knuckles. 15

3 When saying birchos hashachar, omit the berachah of She asah li kol tzarki. 16 From the age of nine or ten (depending on his or her strength), we educate our children to delay their meals today. 17 There are sources that state that the fast of Yom Kippur should last for twenty-six hours. 18 However, the Rebbe writes that one can fast a little over twenty-five hours, and those few minutes can be considered as a complete hour. 19 Shacharis When saying Shema (during karbanos and Shacharis), we say Baruch Shem out loud. In Shemoneh Esrei, we insert the additions for Shabbos. We don t say Avinu Malkeinu. Krias hatorah When the aron kodesh is opened, we say Vayehi Binsoa Ha aron, the Yud-Gimmel Midos Harachamim (three times), the Ribono Shel Olam for the Yamim Nora im, and Berich Shemei. For krias hatorah, two Sifrei Torah are removed from the aron kodesh. From the first Sefer Torah, we read five aliyos in Parshas Acharei (16:1 34). The second Sefer Torah is then placed next to the first one, and Chatzi Kaddish is recited. This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the first Sefer Torah. With the exception of Maftir, the Torah is read with the special tune of the Yamim Nora im. From the second Sefer Torah, we read Maftir in Parshas Pinchas (29:7 11). This is followed by hagbah and gelilah of the second Sefer Torah, after which the haftorah is read (Yeshayahu 57:14 58:14). Krias hatorah is followed by Yekum Purkan and Yizkor. Those whose parents are alive leave the shul during Yizkor. 20 During the first year of mourning, the mourner stays in shul but does not recite Yizkor. 21

4 Musaf We insert the additions for Shabbos. If the floor of the shul is made of marble or rock, put down a towel or other separation before bowing during Aleinu and Vehakohanim. The Kohanim duchen during chazaras hashatz. Before duchening, the Kohanim wash their hands as usual (until the wrist). 22 Musaf is followed by the Tehillim of the day, as well as kapitlach We also say the Sheish Zechiros and Velakachta Soles. 23 We do not say Ein Keilokeinu and Aleinu. We make sure to take a break (for at least forty-five minutes) between Musaf and Minchah. 24 Minchah Minchah begins with (karbanos and) krias hatorah. We do not say Ashrei, Uva Letzion, or the possuk Va ani sefilasi. Krias hatorah of Minchah is read with the regular tune. Three aliyos are read in Parshas Acharei Mos (18:1 30), and the third oleh reads Maftir Yonah. In Shemoneh Esrei, we insert the additions for Shabbos. Chazaras hashatz is followed by Ledavid Hashem Ori (but not Aleinu). We don t say Avinu Malkeinu. Ne ilah Ne ilah begins a short time before shekiah. 25 The aron kodesh is opened before Ashrei, and remains open until (after the tekiah at) the end of Ne ilah. 26 According to Minhag Chabad, the chazzan says Le eila ule eila twice: in the Chatzi Kaddish before Shemoneh Esrei and the Kaddish Shalem after chazaras hashatz. 27 וחתמנו, וכתוב with וכתבנו Replace.ונחתם with ונכתב and,וחתום with Ne ilah means to lock. During this tefillah, all doors are locked, and no one is allowed inside: the only ones present are the Jewish people and Hashem Himself (Likkutei Sichos vol. 4, p. 1154).

5 Insert the additions for Shabbos. In the last paragraph before 28.שבתות קדשך, וינוחו בם Retzei, say After chazaras hashatz we say Avinu Malkeinu (for the first and.חתמנו with כתבנו only time this Yom Kippur). 29 We replace We then say Shema once, Baruch Shem three times, and Hashem hu ha Elokim seven times. The chazzan says Kaddish Shalem. Before the words Tiskabel tzlos hon, we sing Napoleon s March, after which a single tekiah is blown. 30 We call out Leshanah haba ah birushalayim, and the chazzan finishes the Kaddish. Although the tekiah may be blown even if it is still before nightfall, 31 the Rebbe was particular that it should be blown after tzeis hakochavim. 32 We then say Ein Keilokeinu, Aleinu, and kapitlach of Tehillim. 33 Motzoei Yom Kippur Before Maariv, remove the tallis from your head and let it hang over your shoulders, and put on a hat. Continue wearing the tallis and kittel. 34 During Shemoneh Esrei, say Atah Chonantanu. We no longer add the additions for the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. If you mistakenly said Hamelech hakadosh or Hamelech hamishpat, do not go back. 35 However, if you said the word vechasveinu (in Zachreinu lechaim), finish Shemoneh Esrei, and then daven Shemoneh Esrei again as a voluntary tefillah. 36 After Maariv, wash your hands three times alternately until the wrists, without a berachah. 37 Kohanim should do so as well. 38 Additionally, rinse your mouth and change into your regular shoes (if possible). 39 On motzoei Yom Kippur, we wish each other, Gut Yom Tov! 40 Havdalah is made in shul, followed by kiddush levanah. Havdalah is made with besamim and a candle, as on every motzoei Shabbos. 41 However, the candle used must be one that was burning from before Yom Kippur. 42 If you have such a candle at home (e. g., a yahrzeit licht), use it for havdalah. Preferably, light another candle from it and make the berachah on both of them. 43 If you do not have such a candle

6 at home, light a candle from a candle that was burning from before Yom Kippur (e.g., a neighbor s yahrzeit licht) and make the berachah over it. 44 Havdalah is made while still wearing a tallis and kittel. 45 After havdalah we say Viyitein Lecha. 46 We eat a meal on motzoei Yom Kippur. 47 We dip the piece of bread/challah upon which we said Hamotzi into honey. 48 On motzoei Yom Kippur, we begin (planning) to build the sukkah. 49 SUNDAY, 11 TISHREI, 5778 THINGS TO DO Today is known as Beshem Hashem or G-tt s nommen. 50 Today we make a point to go early to shul. 51 SUKKOS PREPARATIONS Sukkah Each family should do their best to build their own sukkah. 52 We place a large amount of sechach on the sukkah. 53 The Rebbe once said that one can fulfill the obligation to see the stars through the sechach by inserting a pole into the sechach and then removing it, thus creating a hole through which the stars can be seen. 54 However, do not place so much sechach that rain cannot enter the sukkah. 55 It is not our custom to hang noyei sukkah. 56 See below, Hosafos, for additional halachos related to building a sukkah. Arba minim We are mehader to use an esrog from Calabria. 57 Esrogim from Calabria are preferred over Calabria-breed esrogim from Eretz Yisroel. 58

7 The esrog should be yellow. 59 Do not take more than one esrog, one lulav, and two aravos. However, we do add to the number of hadassim. 60 The Rebbe once mentioned that at least three additional hadassim should be used. 61 The hadassim and aravos must be a minimum of three tefachim high (9.5 in. or 24 cm.), and the spine of the lulav must be at least four tefachim high (12.6 in. or 32 cm.). (This shiur does not include the leaves that extend above the spine.) 62 If the hadassim or aravos are higher than the above shiur, the spine of the lulav must extend at least one tefach (3.15 in. or 8 cm.) above them. 63 If possible, buy a kosher set of arba minim for each son from the age of six and older. 64 TUESDAY, 13 TISHREI, 5778 ON THIS DATE Today is the yahrzeit of the Rebbe Maharash. He passed away in 5643 (1882) and is buried in Lubavitch. The Rebbe would farbreng on this day. WEDNESDAY, 14 TISHREI, 5778 EREV SUKKOS THINGS TO DO Give extra tzedakah today. 65 Additionally, give tzedakah for the two days of Yom Tov and for Shabbos. 66 Do not eat bread during the last three halachic hours of the day, so you will have an appetite when eating in the sukkah tonight. Limited quantities of other foods may be eaten. 67

8 Binding the arba minim It is customary to bind the arba minim together today, and to do so in the sukkah. 68 Make sure to remove all strings/rubber bands from the hadassim and aravos before binding them to the lulav. 69 Bind the lulav itself with two rings (made of lulav leaves). Position them that they will be covered by the hadassim and aravos. Try to ensure the top ring will also be covered, at least partially. 70 Additionally, bind the hadassim and aravos to the lulav using three rings, all positioned within one tefach. 71 Make sure the hadassim and aravim are bound in their upright position. 72 With the lulav s spine facing you, position one hadas to the lulav s right, one to its left, and one in the center, bent toward the right. Position one aravah to the lulav s right and one to its left. 73 Try to ensure the aravos aren t that conspicuous. 74 Bind the hadassim and aravos at the bottom of the lulav, so that when you will hold the lulav, you will hold them as well. 75 Eruv tavshilin Since Yom Tov leads directly into Shabbos, it is necessary to make an eruv tavshilin to enable preparation on Friday for Shabbos. Take a loaf of bread or challah (at least the size of a kebeitzah, i.e., 2 oz.) and a piece of fish or meat (at least the size of a kezayis, i.e., 0.9 oz.). Give them to another adult (if possible, an individual who is a non-dependent 76 ) and say the sentence of Ani mezakeh (as printed in the siddur). Next, the other person lifts the bread and cooked dish a tefach high (approximately three inches) and returns them to you. Finally, make the berachah and say the sentence of Bedein yehei shara lana (as printed in the siddur). 77 If you do not understand this final sentence in Aramaic, say it in English 78 (for the English text, visit The bread and cooked dish should not be eaten until all the necessary Shabbos preparations have been completed. 79

9 If your sukkah is equipped with a cover for rain, leave it open when Yom Tov begins, to allow the kedushah of Yom Tov to rest on the sukkah. 80 If your sukkah is equipped with a cover for rain that is located below the sechach, or if it is above the sechach but a tefach of space separates it from the sechach, when rolling up the cover make sure at least one tefach remains unrolled. This will allow it to be opened on Yom Tov. However, if the cover is directly above the sechach, it may be rolled up completely. 81 Before Yom Tov, light a long-burning candle, from which the Yom Tov and Shabbos candles can be lit tomorrow night and Friday night. Ideally, women and girls should light candles before shekiah. 82 Two berachos are said: Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov and Shehecheyanu. If possible, the candles should be lit in the sukkah 83 and should remain there for the meal. 84 HOSAFOS Building a Sukkah The sukkah should be placed directly under the sky (without tree branches or the like in between). 85 A sukkah should not be built on public property. 86 The sukkah should preferably consist of four complete walls. 87 The walls of the sukkah should be strong enough not to move because of the wind. 88 If building a sukkah on grass or earth, the floor should be covered, to avoid the issur of watering when drinking in the sukkah on Shabbos and Yom Tov. 89
