It can be recited until 7:19 p.m. 5 MONDAY, 16 KISLEV, 5778 At Maariv Monday night, begin replacing vesein berachah with vesein tal u matar levrachah. See below, Hosafos, for the laws that apply if you said vesein berachah instead of vesein tal u matar levrachah. WEDNESDAY, 18 KISLEV, 5778 Today we complete the annual cycle of the study of Tanya (and Hayom Yom). Make sure to conclude the masechta you selected last year for chalukas hashas. 6 During Minchah, do not say Tachanun. 7 Gut Yom Tov! 3 THURSDAY, 19 KISLEV, 5778 CHAG HAGEULAH, ROSH HASHANAH LACHASSIDUS ON THIS DATE Today marks the anniversary of the passing of the Maggid of Mezritch in 5533 (1772). His resting place is in Anipoli. Additionally, today marks the anniversary of the release of the Alter Rebbe from his first imprisonment in 5559 (1798). Yud-Tes Kislev is referred to as the Rosh Hashanah of Chassidus, 8 Chag Hachagim, 9 and the Matan Torah of penimiyus hatorah. 10 We do not say Tachanun. 11 Wear Yom Tov clothing (for married men a kapote). 12 Farbrengens The main Yud-Tes Kislev farbrengen 13 generally takes place in the evening between Yud-Tes Kislev is the holiday in which our souls were redeemed in peace, and the light and chayus of our souls were given to us. 4 when he left the house of the misnaged. 14 However, the Rebbe encouraged farbrenging on the night of Yud-Tes Kislev as well. 15 The Rebbe mentioned that in a year like this one (when Yud-Tes Kislev occurs on Thursday), one should participate in (at least) three farbrengens: on the night of Yud-Tes Kislev, on the night of Chof Kislev, and on Shabbos. 16 During the farbrengen, the famous niggun on the words Padah veshalom nafshi is sung. 17 It is customary to eat buckwheat (shvartze kashe). 18 Regarding Shabbos, the halachah is that if one person is unable to perform a melachah alone and he does it with another, they are both liable as if they had each done the entire melachah. Similarly, when joining a chalukas hashas, it is as if each participant has studied the entire shas! (Sefer Hasichos 5752, p. 495) Chalukas Hashas Participate in a chalukas hashas by selecting a masechta to study over the course of the year. 19 If you are unable to participate in a local chalukas hashas, select a masechta in the central chalukas hashas by visiting www. chalukashashas.com. 5 We also begin studying Hayom Yom anew. In a letter to someone who asked what to study on Yud-Tes Kislev, the Rebbe wrote that he should study the Alter Rebbe s teachings, namely Chassidus Chabad. This can be done by studying either the Alter Rebbe s own sefarim (such as Tanya, Torah Or, and Likkutei Torah), or the maamarim and sichos of the Rebbeim (which explain his teachings). 20 The Rebbe once said that today s learning should begin with texts that explain the greatness of Yud-Tes Kislev, starting with the letter of the Rebbe Rashab printed in the beginning of Hayom Yom. 21 FRIDAY, 20 KISLEV, 5778 CHAG HAGEULAH Today is celebrated as a Yom Tov as well. The reason is because the geulah of the Alter Rebbe was only complete on Chof Kislev, when he left the house of the misnaged. 22 Additionally, Chof Kislev is the date when the Tanya was printed for the first time, in the year 5557 (1796). 23 We do not say Tachanun. 24 HOSAFOS Vesein Tal U matar Levrachah The following laws apply if you said vesein berachah instead of vesein tal u matar levrachah: If you remembered before saying Hashem s name at the end of 20 אג"ק ח"כ עמ' סא. 21 שיחת ליל י"ט בכסלו תשמ"ט ס"ב )'תורת-מנחם - התוועדויות' ח"ב עמ' 4(, ועיי"ש במעלת לוח זה בכלל. 22 'בית רבי' ח"א פי"ח. 23 היום יום כ' כסלו. 24 ספר-המנהגים עמ' 16 ועמ' 92.

6 Bareich Aleinu, say vesein tal u matar levrachah and continue with al pnei ha adamah etc. as usual. 25 If you remembered after concluding the berachah but before beginning Teka Beshofar, say vesein tal u matar levrachah and continue with Teka Beshofar. 26 If you already began Teka Beshofar, continue until Shema Koleinu. After the words reikam al teshiveinu, insert vesein tal u matar levrachah and then continue with ki atah shomeia etc. This can be done as long as you remembered before saying Hashem s name at the end of Shema Koleinu. 27 If you remembered after concluding Shema Koleinu but before beginning Retzei, say vesein tal u matar levrachah and continue with Retzei. 28 If you remembered after beginning Retzei, go back to the beginning of Bareich Aleinu. 29 If you remembered after saying the second Yihiyu Leratzon, go back to the beginning of Shemoneh Esrei. 30 If the time of the next tefillah has already arrived (e.g., if this took place during Shacharis and you only remembered after chatzos), daven the next tefillah twice, the first time for that tefillah and the second time to make up for the previous tefillah. 31 If you forgot to say vesein tal u matar levrachah during Minchah of Erev Shabbos and only remembered at night, do not daven the Maariv of Shabbos twice. 32 For the first thirty days, if you are uncertain whether you have said vesein berachah or vesein tal u matar levrachah, it is assumed you have said vesein berachah and you must go back (following the laws enumerated above).
