5 RODEPH SHOLOM CHRONICLE Five GIRL SCOUT TROOP A very interesting Troop Committee meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon, October 1 st, to plan for the ensuing year, Mrs. Edwin Porges presiding. Mrs. Leo Diamond, Commissioner of the West Side District and a former member of this Troop honored the group by her presence. Plans are being formulated for the organization of a Senior Troop. As Scouting is becoming more and more popular, and as most groups have reached their full capacity, it is important that more leaders be trained. Any young woman over the age of 18 who is interested in taking a Scout Leadership Course is asked to communicate with Mrs. Philip Stern in the Temple Office. Our Troop has resumed its regular meetings on Wednesday afternoons under the leadership of Mrs. Guy Wood. OUR YOUTH CONGREGATION The Youth Services, held during the High Holydays under the direction of Rabbi Avraham Soltes, evoked an enthusiastic response on the part of our young people. There were present at these Services a number of students from out-of-town who are attending local colleges. The arrangements, ushering and Responsive Readings were planned and carried forward entirely by our Youth Council with the cooperation of Mr. Samuel Falk, Chairman of the Education Board of the Temple. Mr. Falk is to be commended upon the excellent standards established at these High Holyday Services, and we are sure that this initial project will usher in a season of valuable participation and cooperation on the part of the youth of our Synagogue. We have already had a number of inquiries from neighboring Synagogues regarding this unique Youth activity. To Cantor Bernard Loth, to Miss Margaret Havey and to the Choir at the Youth Services, we express our deep appreciation. OUR SUKKOTH SERVICES One of the truly enjoyable fealures of our Festival is the traditional celebration of the harvest. The beautiful Sukkah which adorns our Pulpit is a colorful part of the Holydays. We invite gifts of canned food and contributions of money for the decoration of the Sukkah. The canned articles will be sent to the S.O.S. for European relief. Erev Sukkoth Services will be held on Wednesday evening, October 9th at 5:30 and Thursday morning, October 10th, at 10:00 o'clock. Rabbi Newman will preach at the morning Service. Children e -invited to visit the Sukkah. PROCESSION OF THE SCROLLS Thursday morning, October 17th, at 10:00 o'clock, the traditional Service of Procession of the Scrolls, in tribute to the influence of the Torah, will be observed. Men of the Congregation are invited to participate in this beautiful ceremony which, in our Liberal ritual, is held on Shemini Atzereth. Since Yizkor Services were held on Yom Kippur, only a Commemorative Prayer in honor of the Departed will be recited before the Kaddish at our Festival of Conclusion. We look to the men of the Congregation and members of their family to be present in large numbers on the morning of the 17th. "THE MEANING OF LIFE" Rabbi Newman's Rosh ha-shanah Morning discourse "The Meaning of Life" is being made ready in mimeographed form for distribution on request by Congregants and friends. It is hoped it will be possible to make available also the several High Holyday Sermons of Rabbi Newman in booklet forms, including: "The Endless Struggle," "'God Forgive You and Me for That Man's Sins' "; "The Evil Impulse and the Good;" "Keepers of the Light" and "What Immortality Have We?" Rabbi Soltes' discourses can be secured in copy on request to him.

OUR USHERS AND CO-WORKERS Weare immensely appreciative of the service rendered by our Corps of Ushers at the High Holyday Services. We extend our cordial appreciation also to Mr. Samuel S. Sampliner, Chairman of the Ushers Committee, and his splendid group of co-workers in the Temple; to Mr. Samuel Falk, Chairman of the Education Committee of Rodeph Shalom, and to Mr. Benjamin Sellinger, Principal of our Religious School, who cooperated in the Youth Services at 4 West 76th Street; to Mr. Harold W. Levy, Mr. Leon Weit Mr. Philip M. Stern and Mr. Julius R. Steinhardt who served as officials on the Altar throughout the High Holydays at the Auxiliary Services; to Mr. Julius Gluck, former Principal of our Religious School, who conduded the Children's Services on Yom Kippur; to James W. Falk, who blew the Shofar at the Youth Services; to Mr. Joseph Pulvermacher, President of Rodeph Shalom, Mr. Jacob S. Manheimer, Vice-President, to Mr. Henry Hofheimer, Treasurer of our Congregation, Mr. Ernest J. Wile, Honorary President, and Mr. Alexander Pfeiffer, Honorary Trustee, who cooperated in the reading of our Yom Kippur Services in the Temple. Weare grateful to all who cooperated so faithfully and helpfully during the High Holydays. OUR AUXILIARY SERVICES For the first time in Rodeph Shalom's history, we have conducted a complete High Holyday Service in our Marcus Loew Auditorium. The response to this innovation was most encouraging, and we hope that these Services will become a permanent institution of our High Holyday worship in order to accommodate those many families for whom we are unable to find places in our main Temple. To Rabbi Saadia Gelb, to Cantor Irving Alwes, to Mr. Sidney Sukoenig, the Organist, and to the members of the Choir, we express our appreciation. OUR CHARITY FUND Weare grateful to our Congregants for their generosity in responding to the Charity Appeal at Yom Kippur Services. Weare happy to state that the offertory this year was the largest ever contributed in our Temple. We rejoice that we can donate in large proportion to the 52 charitable and welfare groups who are the beneficiaries of our Charity Fund. Congregants who may not have been present at the Service when the Appeal was made are earnestly invited to make their gifts to the Temple Office, so that we may thus have a full representation of our Temple membership, with its consequent increase of gifts for the needy. BOOK OF LIFE Weare grateful to the families of the late Sigmund Gutfreund and Bella Hirschberg for their gifts to the Memorial Fund for the inscription of a Page in the Book of Life in their memory. The Page of Sigmund Gutfreund will be dedicated on Friday evening, November 15th.
