He founded and leads the Tzohar Rabbinical Organization, which is committed to making religious protocol in Israel more welcoming to Jews of all backgrounds. Rabbi Stav serves as chief rabbi of Shoham and co-chancellor of Ohr
10 Torah Stone (with Rabbi Shlomo Riskin) and was a leading candidate for the position of Chief Rabbi of Israel in the most recent election. 11 ******************************************* ******************************************* GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK brought to you by David Kahn Quiet Lawn Mowing Many yards are small enough that a hand-powered lawn mower does the job. Hand-powered lawn mowers are very quiet, replacing the roar of a power motor with the quiet whir of the lower-tech model. If you have a larger yard or one that requires heavier maintenance, research electric lawn mowers which make less noise and have a lower environmental impact. ******************************************************** ARTS AND LEISURE
12 On View The Power of Pictures: Early Soviet Photography, Early Soviet Film Through February 7, 2016 "[S]tunning photography from the 1920s and '30s... showcases outstanding artistic accomplishments." The Wall Street Journal Covering the period from the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution through the 1930s, this exhibition explores how early modernist photography influenced a new Soviet style and how photography, film, and poster art were later harnessed to disseminate Communist ideology. The Power of Pictures revisits this moment in history when artists acted as engines of social change and radical political engagement, so that art and politics went hand in hand. The 180 works on view include photographs, publications, and film posters. Films by major directors of the era are also screened in the exhibition galleries on a daily rotation during Museum hours see the film calendar here.
13 Becoming Jewish: Warhol's Liz and Marilyn Through February 7, 2016 "How Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe Became Jewish Through Andy Warhol's Eyes" The Forward This intimate exhibition examines Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe's conversions to Judaism through photographs, documents, and ephemera alongside Andy Warhol s iconic portraits of the screen stars. Becoming Jewish draws parallels between the actresses religious identities and Warhol s exploration of celebrity through his image-making. Masterpieces & Curiosities: Alfred Stieglitz's The Steerage Through February 14, 2016 "An incredible tale about the unreliability of photography as a witness to history and the truth." WNYC The Steerage is often seen as the quintessential image of American immigration. Through vintage ephemera and contemporary artwork, this exhibition explores how The Steerage came to be so iconic, yet so misunderstood, and why it continues to resonate deeply especially with Jewish Americans today. The Television Project: Picturing a People Through February 14, 2016 The first in a series drawn from the Museum s National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting, Picturing a People features clips, ephemera, and works of art and considers how Jews have been portrayed and have portrayed themselves on American television from the 1950s to the present. **************************************************************************************************
