Salutations and peace be upon Muhammed صلى الله علیھ وسلم whose life style is a source of guidance for us. Ramadan Mubarak to all. I wish you the most beautiful times as you delight in worship this month. Ramadan is the best opportunity where we can learn to be more caring while dealing with people of all faiths, cleanse our hearts and tongues and perfect our daily dealings. As we all know, improving ourselves in these areas is critical to attaining Allah s pleasure. Let us strive Eid Al Adha (Subject to moon sighting) Friday the 1st of September 1

to make improvements in our daily lives during this blessed month, and work to keep the good habits alive once the thirty days have passed. When our beloved Prophet (peace be up on him) was asked, What deeds are most pleasing to Allah? he replied, The most regular, constant deeds - even though they may be few. (Bukhari) Islamic Reminders Hadith Ibn Mas ud Radiyallahu anhu narrated: Allah s Messenger Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said: Ask Allah for His blessings, for, Allah loves that He should be a sked. And, the most excellent worship is to wait for relief. (Tirmidhi, Ibn Abu Dunya) Etiquettes of Dua/ supplication Ensure that his sustenance is from Halal source. Be sincere in your dua. To start and finish dua with praising and glorifying Allah Ta ala and Salutations on the Prophet Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam. To face the Qiblah To raise hands up to the shoulders To have firm belief that it will be accepted. To ask three times To say Ameen at the end To wipe both hands over the face after saying Ameen. Should not be disheartened if one sees delay in acceptance of dua. Mrs Zulfiquar Islamic Studies and Hifz Coordinator We organised for the whole Quran to be recited in Taraweeh Salat as we did last year. Alhamdulillah, we completed the recitation of the Quran on the night of 27 th of Ramadan. I would like to wish all our staff, students and community members a very happy and peaceful Eid. May Allah ج""""""ل ش""""""أن""""""ه accept our good deeds. Please enjoy these amazing days and remember those who need our help. Wassalam, Kind regards, Zulfiquar Ali Principal From the Office School Matters In order for a smooth-running school, we require cooperation from parents, students, staff and the community at large. Below are some general reminders. It would be much appreciated if these guidelines are followed for a smooth transitioning throughout the day. Parents are NOT allowed to go to classrooms. On late arrival, parents are NOT allowed to drop their children directly to class. Students are required to obtain late pass from their respective offices before entering class. Parents are NOT allowed to pass lunch items or any necessary belongings directly to the children into their classrooms. Parents are required to make an appointment to meet teachers. 2

We would also like to bring fidget spinners as a topic of attention for parents. Many schools in Victoria have already banned them as they are a distraction to learning and can be dangerous. Thank you for your co-operation! We would also like to say Jazakumullah to all the parent volunteers who have helped us out with various activities and we wish you all a very happy Eid, inshaallah. Office Admin From the Quran and Tarbiyah Departments Tarbiyah Tarbiyah has been quite rewarding this term. Students were introduced to new topics and Islamic concepts. Some of the major areas covered in Tarbiyah this term were Hadith and Aqaa id. As part of the curriculum, all students were required to memorise a series of ahadith on etiquette and good character, both in Arabic and in English. High Achievers in Hadith Memorisation At the end of the term, each student was tested on all the ahadith they memorised throughout the term. MashaAllah, the students have shown great zeal and effort in this area. Some students were able to read all the ahadith without any prompting and were awarded a certificate for their perfect memorisation. Parents are encouraged to ask their children to share the ahadith they have memorised this term with them and also motivate them to put into practice what they have learned into their daily lives. Next term, students of all grade levels will be introduced to Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) and Islamic History. In Fiqh, the main focus will be on Hasna Nawaz Sheza Mehrish Tahsinul Islam Wudhu and Salaat, which the students will learn practically in class, inshaallah. Hifz (Girls Wing) Zainab Abdullah Ammar Ahmed Noor Ahmed Fathima Ali Maryam Ali Rahma Mussa Omer Alizai 100% 97-99% Ahnaf Abdullah Osaid Ali Almas Kazi Aroush Usman Joud Aljofan Nuhad Nuzair Sumaya Putra At the beginning of term 2, Hifz girls were given set memorisation goals tailored to suit their specific abilities and memorisation skills. While a few of the students managed to reach their goals, others made tremendous effort working towards theirs but were not able to reach their target due to shorter school hours in Ramadan. May Allah Ta aala reward them for their efforts and we hope to see more students reach their memorisation goals next term, inshaallah. 3

The Hifz students have also been having one period of Tarbiyah per week this term, alhamdulillah. They are currently studying the Major Signs of the Day of Judgement and Hadith on good character. All in all, it has been quite a productive term for the Hifz students by the Grace of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta ala. Five Minute Madrasah Alhamdulillah, the Five Minute Madrasah on the Girl s Wing is proving to be very beneficial as it gives mothers, female guardians and teachers alike a very good opportunity to refresh their knowledge and learn new concepts pertaining to current and upcoming Islamic events. It has been especially helpful in revising day-to-day requirements of Islam. This term, we covered the following topics in these five minute sessions: Dua Merits of Shabaan Merits of Ramadhan Merits of Shawwal Around the School School Events Mrs Zulfiquar Islamic Studies and Hifz Coordinator End of Term 1 Activities (A Re-cap) Team Building Games All s well if the end is well and all s fun if the end is fun. The last day of term 1 was the most exciting day for everyone at school. All the Green Card recipients in the Girls Wing were given a special treat through a team building activities session, which built upon their teamwork and enhanced the rapport amongst them. Students went through a series of activities at different stations in groups, according to their buddy classes. The ideas of competition lead to the sense of achievement, 4

sportsmanship and acceptance. The winning teams were awarded with ribbons immediately after each game. It was indeed a very successful session reflecting the energy gathered by the Al-Imanians during the past whole term. Socceroos Tournament Ms Roszana Ramli Student Well-being & Discipline Coordinator At Al Iman College, we develop strategies for students that build skills of productive collaboration (Principle of Learning and Teaching 2.2) through many activities. This End of Term -1 Socceroos tournament has strengthened the relationship between learning communities within and beyond the school. All the students from Primary boys side were encouraged to participate in the tournament. School provided refreshments for all students during the final sessions. HPE teacher Ustaz Khairul led the tournament with the cooperation of Ustaz Abdullah, Ustaz Monsur, Ustaz Shoaib and Ustaz Sharief. The students have shown awesome resilience throughout the tournament. Br Monsur Mohammed Grade 4 Teacher (Boys Wing) Al Iman College 2017 Earth Day & Earth Hour When it comes to make an impact on the community and participation, Al Iman College is not left behind. Earth Hour in Australia and Earth Day worldwide were celebrated on 25 th March and 22 nd April, respectively. At Al Iman College, the events were commemorated on Friday, 28 th April The children in the Girls' Wing were introduced to these important events and encouraged to implement daily practices to save the Earth in general, during morning assembly. To further create the awareness of the importance of taking care of our Earth, students carried out various activities in class during lessons. 5

In Period 6 of Friday 28 th April, students were encouraged to limit the use of electricity in the classrooms (turned off the lights & rolled up the blinds to get as much sunlight as possible into the classroom, kept the heater working at a temperature of not more than o C, ensured that the lights were turned off before leaving the classrooms, etc.). Students were also encouraged to conduct the Earth Hour' on the following day with their families. We hope, everyone bears his or her share of making a positive impact on earth. Ms Roszana Student Well-being and Discipline Coordinator Iftar Program 2017 The feeling of togetherness is an important ingredient for the recipe of success. Al Iman College hosted its maiden iftar session especially for the Secondary girls on Wednesday, 21 st June. The programme started with an interesting activity of designing a modest dress. The teamwork and sportsmanship was amazing and none of the students were able to hide their overwhelming enjoyment. Later, a speech competition was a strong learning experience for them. They participated in activities that enriched them spiritually as well as built upon their camaraderie or team spirit as a class. Most importantly, the event has instilled a sense of belonging as well as strengthened relationships amongst the students and staff. It was a wonderful experience exploring each other. After taleem, the students had an opportunity of breaking fast together with their peers and teachers. It was a memorable and enjoyable evening indeed. Ms Roszana, Student Well-being and Discipline Coordinator Ramadan-Eid Class Decoration Contest To continue to liven up the mood of the month of Ramadan and the upcoming Eid, the students were involved in decorating their classrooms to keep them hyped up and be reminded of the goodness of these blessed months. In doing so, the students used the opportunity to enhance their teamwork and sense of belonging as a class, 6

on top of showcasing their creativity, taking pride of their effort and ultimately enjoying themselves in beautifying their individual classes. It was also another good time for the buddy classes to work together, with the older students assisting the younger ones in decorating their respective classes. The classes would be judged on the criteria provided prior and the most well decorated class will be announced as a winner on the first day back to school in Term 3, inshaa Allah. Ms Roszana Ramli Well-being & Discipline Coordinator Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge is now open and Al Iman College is excited to be participating. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or experience 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 8 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form and return it to your school. Special Needs Department At Al Iman College, we strive to meet the needs of students of all backgrounds and abilities. In order to give children with special needs that extra boost, we provide them with one-on-one assistance though the Speech Therapy Assistant (STA) Program which is overlooked by a qualified Speech Pathologist. Alhamdulillah, these sessions are proving to be quite beneficial to the students as their records show To view the booklists and more information about the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge, visit: Ms Saeeda Imran Curriculum Coordinator 7

constant progress. We would like to give special thanks to the Integration Aides for doing such a wonderful job at keeping the students engaged and being such a great support for the form teachers. Jazakumullah, May Allah reward you for your efforts. Ameen. Special Needs Department Foundation - Grade 6 Foundation News It was quite an eventful term for our Foundations. Our little learners consolidated their learning with a range of activities in terms of their numeracy and literacy. The most interesting parts were their Western Water incursion and a full of fun, day trip to Melbourne CBD. During their incursion, our little students were able to enjoy the presentation and avail a chance to understand The Water Cycle. The most fun part was the story of Donna The Water Droplet. Information about healthy hydration and water conservation was some extra perk. Our little explorers fully availed their chance to explore various Historical Monuments, Aboriginal Heritage such as Kangaroo skin and boomerangs etc. Learning the importance of different places through traditional Aboriginal stories were the most interesting parts of their excursion. They also visited ACMI and got a chance to inspire from modern digital technology. Writing a recount about their excursion reflected their deep learning and exciting experience. Our foundation gems also used their artistic abilities in various artworks. They did not miss the chance to add a sweet message while designing and making a beautiful purse for their mums. Understanding the value of Ramadan was a valuable part and all the students enthusiastically participated in making of Ramadan posters. Our term successfully ended with the end of Ramadan, and we wish you a very happy Eid. Foundation Team 8

Grade 1 Geography Dioramas As part of Geography this term, the year One students have amazed us by their brilliant dioramas. They each created their own cities, indicating an understanding of natural landscapes, managed and constructed environments, all of which we have been learning about this term. Good job Year One! Grade 4 Girls - Excursion to The Royal Botanic Gardens On Monday 1 st May, the Grade 4 girls went for an excursion to Royal Botanic Gardens. As part of their learning in Geography, the students were given the opportunity to learn the basic skills of good gardening practice. This was intended to enhance their learning in the classroom regarding the use and management of natural resources and waste, and the different views on how to do this sustainably. The program focused on water conservation, organic gardening methods, composting and worm farming. The girls were particularly excited about holding the worms and letting them wriggle around in their hands! The hands-on experience was followed by a tour through the Children s garden and the wider Botanic Gardens. Along the way, students were also met by a few friendly guests. With a wealth of knowledge under their belts, the year 4 students were then able to design and develop their own garden at school, whilst also helping the College s kindergarten to set up one of their own. A special thanks to those parents involved along the way! Ms Medina Zahic Grade 4 Teacher 9

Grade 5 & 6 - Excursion to Sovereign Hill This term was a super exciting learning experience for our Grade 5 & 6 girls. On Monday 22 nd May 2017, the Grade 5 & 6 girls went for a History excursion to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. The excursion was a supplement for the students with the topics, themes and programs covered in the classroom. Our girls had a fruitful and memorable time where they learned about the Putrid Past at which the colonial Australia in the 1800s and the development of Australia as a nation were explored. They learned about what life was like for different groups of people in the colonial period and examined significant events and people, political and economic developments and social structures during that era. Overall learning generally centred around the way of life of the people in the colonial period. The girls also had a great opportunity to experience how it was to be in the tunnel as a gold digger in the Red Hill Mine. They had fun doing the gold panning too and ventured around the premises during the general viewing session. All in all, the girls had such an enjoyable day learning through the various activities that they enthusiastically participated in. As part of their learning journey of Australian History, the Grade 5 students were required to plan, design and construct a diorama showcasing the settlement of the natives or pioneers of Australia. Similarly, the Grade 6 students were required to plan, design and create a poster for an advertisement to encourage people to migrate to Australia during the 1960s 70s period, as their project. Students applied their researching skills in consolidating the appropriate information prior to constructing and creating the diorama and poster, respectively. From their research findings, students wrote a short write-up to accompany their projects. On completion of their tasks, students did oral presentations on their projects in the class. Overall, the girls had a wonderful learning journey throughout the term with a rewarding bonus of Ramadan by learning virtues and practically experiencing them. The whole class actively participated in decorating their class for upcoming Eid as well. Ms Roszana Ramli Grade 5 & 6 Teacher 10

Year 7 and 8 Yr 7 & 8 - ROBOTICS INCURSION Term 2 brought a unique and exciting 21 st century skilled experience for grade 7 & 8 girls. Robotics Incursion gave hands on experience to understand real world digital technology challenges. The girls were able to understand the importance of accuracy while digital coding to achieve artificial intelligence. All the girls actively participated in specially designed series of activities like programming driverless cars for challenging them to estimate and achieve the distance on the assigned road. That helped them to understand better about the concepts of accuracy and estimation for programming. Overall, it was a wonderful and beneficial experience for their learning criteria and will hopefully help open many doors for them in the future.
