5 INTRODUCTION In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the especially Merciful. All praise is due to Allah alone, who is in command of all the knowledge in the world for it is He who has taught us all that we know. As we embark on the journey of learning, and it indeed IS a journey and not a destination, we must remember to purify our intentions. Our children are a trust from Allah of standing in front of Allah statement.. I know that this has become somewhat of a cliché, but when we think on the Day of Questioning, we realise the importance of this Out of the three deeds that will continue to benefit man after his death, one of them is a righteous child who prays for him. So all of you are guardians and are responsible for your charges." (Bukhari) Education is sacred in Islam, for the first command to the Prophet Muhammad was the command to read. Children are like a blank canvas, or clay that is ready to be molded wet and compliant. Giving them the right education in the right way at a tender age is what will shape their characters and determine what kind of Muslims and Muslimahs they will become. This is a humble attempt to cover the Reception curriculum (ages 3 to 5) so as to give parents and teachers ideas on how to impart that knowledge in a more holistic, fun and Islamic way,. إن شا الله I pray that Allah put barakah in this project and make it beneficial for all of us. 6 How to use this guide First and foremost, purify your intention. Teach for the sake of Allah inshaallah become a form of worship. and it will Begin every lesson with the remembrance of Allah : This guide covers Mathematics (Numeracy), English (Literacy) and Knowledge and Understanding of the world (Science and Geography). The topics needed to be covered are split across three terms and each term has the same theme for all the subjects. The autumn term theme is Allah the Creator, the spring term theme is Prophets of Allah and the summer term theme is The Five Pillars. Each topic has an Islamic and academic objective. The objectives are met through a number of activities. Remember that each child is unique. Do not make the mistake of forcing, pressuring and losing your temper as that will kill their love of learning. You, as the teacher, can determine how each child will progress through the topics. 9 MATHEMATICS AUTUMN ALLAH THE CREATOR TOPIC TITLE: NAMES OF THE DAYS OF THE WEEK Islamic Objective: To be aware that Allah swt created the night and the day and to be thankful to Allah for each new day to earn good deeds. To learn the days of the week in Arabic. Academic Objective: To learn the names of the days of the week in order ACTIVITIES 1. BE THANKFUL TO ALLAH FOR EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK Resources: Card Paper, Colour pencils / Crayons/Paints Instructions: Each day for one week, the child can state one thing they are grateful that Allah created for them. They can make a model of their favourite thing and add a picture/word of the thing they are grateful for on the model. Example: A large rocket with one large star for each day labeled with the name of the day, and they colour a picture (of what they are grateful for) and stick it on the star. 2. MAKE A DAYS-OF-THE-WEEK RHYME Instructions: Say the days of the week on each finger in a rhythmic way. Watch a You-tube video on the days of the week. Do it at the beginning of every math lesson for a week. Make Arabic days of the week rhyme too. Further Resources: MAKE A WEEKLY CALENDAR Resources: Card Paper, Colour pencils / Crayons, scissors, ruler Instructions: Make or print out or a colour-coded chart or wheel with English and Arabic days of the week and hang it up where they see it every day. Begin on the Saturday before and let the children remember everyday what day it was yesterday and tomorrow and how many days left to Friday. 12 LITERACY AUTUMN ALLAH THE CREATOR TOPIC TITLE: HAVE AN EMERGING SELF-CONFIDENCE Islamic Objective: To learn that Allah created Adam (AS) and taught him the names of everything - essentially - how to communicate. Talk to the children. Be a role model about how to express oneself and listen to them. They will learn how to talk from imitating you so teach them how to communicate politely. Say 'please' and 'JazakAllah kheir' and have proper adab (manners) when talking to them. If you respect them, they will learn to respect others. Do not be-little their opinions and let them share in some family discussions to ultimately reach a decision. Academic Objective: To begin to have confidence to speak, and listen to others about wants, needs and interests. ACTIVITIES 1. AKHLAAQ CHART Instructions: Make a reward chart based on good manners and etiquettes. E.g. talking nicely and respectfully, remembering your duas, listening to their teachers, peers, parents and siblings, coming to an agreement about issues like sharing without squabbling. Reward them at the end of the week, and remind them that the true reward waits with Allah. 13 LITERACY AUTUMN ALLAH THE CREATOR 2. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT Instructions: Role play - bad adaab when speaking and good adaab when speaking - child spots the bad and the good. Make it fun with rewards. Further Ideas: Put up reminders around the learning space to remember to be polite and respectful and listen. Make a poster together on proper etiquette of communication. You can include the hadith pertaining to etiquette of speech: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Saying a good word is charity. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, The best amongst you are the ones who have the best manners and character. (Bukhari) 3. WHAT DO YOU THINK? Instructions: Ask their opinion about different matters and decisions and listen attentively to them. Their confidence will grow when they realise their opinions matter. You can have an opinions jar which is used when there is something to discuss as a family where everyone puts their opinions forward. Academic Objective: Children should be introduced to the different food groups and the vocabulary relating to healthy eating. ACTIVITIES 1. THREE EQUAL PARTS - PLATES Instructions: Tell the children the story of Aadam AS and how Allah created him from dust. Allah created us all. He also tells us that we must take care of our bodies and give it the right kind of nourishment so it stays healthy. Make a simple food chart of the kinds of foods we must eat to keep healthy. Also refer to the Prophet (SAW)'s diet and lifestyle - how he encouraged being fit and dividing your stomach into three parts. Draw two similar pictures of an empty plate and empty glass - the children can either draw or cut out pics from magazines to make a healthy 'sunnah' plate and a non-healthy plate.
