When there is a crisis we are the last to respond or will not even care to respond because we do not have any relive fund for our community. JOTHY plans to positively respond towards this call by introduicing JOTHY DHANA FUND. Under its plans we wish to launch various fund raising activities for the cause of Hindus and Hinduism. The Hindu word for religion is Dharma. The word, Dharma is derived from Dhru which is a root word in Sanskrit meaning to sustain or preserve. Therefore, Dharma means the values which sustains the whole universe. We live in the age of Kaliyuga. This era (age) is dominated by evil influences. Human intelligence is curtailed by the ignorance and everybody is driven by materialism. Shreemad Bhagvat (The Hindu Scripture) states that the foundation pillars of Dharma (religion) are:- truth, compassion, charity/alms (daan) and moral values. In Kaliyuga the Dharma prevails only on one pillar and that the foundation pillar is Charity. As it is well described in Manu Smruti (A Hindu Scripture complied by Lord named Manu) that in the era of ignorance, illusion and evil influences (Kaliyuga), human beings are ordained to perform the acts of giving. Every one is obliged to donate for charity. This is the only way you practice your Dharma. The famous Saint Tulsidas has said that in Kaliyuga the Dharma means to contribute time, money and effort for all good causes. One should give paramount importance to a charity work. Furthermore Tulsidas says that by performing this noble, selfless act of generosity, it leads an individual on to the divine path of a self realisation. According to Tulsidas the way to God is to serve him, work for him help the others without thinking of reward or personal gains. I m in the Heart of Dharma I am in Your Giving & I am in the Receiving - Krishna in Bhagvat Gita JOTHY (4) Lord Krishna has guided Arjuna in chapter 17 of Bhagvat Gita saying that one who does the charity work with the sense of obligation/moral duty and with the utmost pure intention then his action becomes a divine service. Such charity activities purify the individual soul. Therefore give for the sake of giving as it is your moral duty to give and don t think while you give. Vyasji the famous Rishi (seer) has said in the Bhagvat; One should commit one self where ever you get an opportunity to support the charity work. This is because we are ordained by our scriptures to donate generously for all good causes. Examples being like building a temple, or to dig a well or erect drinking water facilities like a reservoir. Each individual should put aside one tenth of his/her annual earning and this amount should be donated unto the feet of the Lord. It is also said that if an individual gives his/her first income in religious charity then his/her wealth is purified by this sacrifice. -By The Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) JOTHY DHANA FUND 1 Is about contributing a little but in a collective effort. Why does Hinduism have so many Gods? A: Hindus all believe in one Supreme God who created the universe. He is allpervasive. He created many God s, highly advanced spiritual beings, to be His helpers. Q2. Do Hindus believe in reincarnation? A: Yes, we believe the soul is immortal and takes birth time and time again. Through this process, we have experiences, learn lessons and evolve spiritually. Finally we graduate from physical birth. Q3. What is karma? A: Karma is the universal principle of cause and effect. Our actions, both good and bad, come back to us in the future, helping us to learn from life s lessons and become better people. Q4. Why Do Hindus worship the cow? A: Hindus don t worship cows. We respect, honor and adore the cow. By honoring this gentle animal, who gives more than she takes, we honor all creatures. Q5. Are Hindus idol worshipers? A: Hindus do not worship a stone or metal idol as God. We worship God through the image. We invoke the presence of God from the higher, unseen worlds, into the image so that we can commune with Him and receive His blessings. Q6: Are Hindus forbidden to eat meat? A: Hindus teach vegetarianism as a way to live with a minimum of hurt to other beings. But in today s world not all Hindus are vegetarians. Q7: Do Hindus have a Religious Holy Book? A: Our holy books are called the Vedas. The Veda, which means wisdom, is comprised of four ancient and holy scriptures which all Hindus revere as the revealed word of God. Most widely read is Bhagvad Gita Q8: Why do many Hindus wear a dot (tilak) near the middle of their forehead? A: The dot (tilak) worn on the forehead is a religious symbol. Among others, it represents divine sight and shows that one is a Hindu. For women, it is also a beauty mark. Q9: Are the Gods of Hinduism really married? A: It is true that God is often depicted with a spouse in our traditional stories. However, on a deeper philosophical level, the Supreme Being and the Gods are neither male nor female and are therefore not married. Q10: What about caste and untouchability? A: Caste is the hereditary division of Indian society based on occupation. The lowest class, deemed untouchables, suffer from discrimination and mistreatment. It is illegal in India to discriminate against, abuse or insult anyone on the basis of caste.

Scriptures & Vedas JOTHY (6) Our principal four books of the Vedas are Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva that includes over 100,000 verses. The knowledge imparted by the Vedas ranges from earthy devotion to high philosophy. Their words and wisdom permeate Hindu thought, ritual and meditation. The Vedas are the ultimate scriptural authority for Hindus. Their oldest portions are said by some to date back as far as 6,000 BCE, orally transmitted for most of history and written down in Sanskrit in the last few millennia, making them the world s longest and most ancient scripture. The Vedas open a rare window into ancient Indian society, proclaiming life s sacredness and the way to oneness with God. Elaboration: For untold centuries unto today, the Vedas have remained the sustaining force and authoritative doctrine, guiding followers in ways of worship, duty and enlightenment. The Vedas are the meditative and philosophical focus for millions of monks and a billion seekers. Their stanzas are chanted from memory by priests and laymen daily as liturgy in temple worship and domestic ritual. All Hindus wholeheartedly accept the Vedas, yet each draws selectively, interprets freely and amplifies abundantly. Over time, this tolerant allegiance has woven the varied tapestry of Indian Hindu Dharma. Each of the four Vedas has four sections: Samhitas (hymn collections), Brahmanas (priestly manuals), Aran yakas (forest treatises) and Upanishads (enlightened discourses). The Samhitas and Brahmanas affirm that God is immanent and transcendent and prescribe ritual worship, mantra and devotional hymns to establish communication with the spiritual worlds. The hymns are invocations to the One Divine and to the Divinities of nature, such as the Sun, the Rain, the Wind, the Fire and the Dawn- as well as prayers for matrimony, progeny, prosperity, concord, protection, domestic rites and more. The Vedas advise: Let there be no neglect of Truth. Let there be no neglect of dharma. Let there be no neglect of welfare. Let there be no neglect of prosperity. Let there be no neglect of study and teaching. Let there be no neglect of the duties to the Gods and the ancestors (Taittiriya Upanishad ). United your resolve, united your hearts, may your spirits be one, that you may long to gether dwell in unity and concord (Rig Veda ). There, where there is no darkness, nor night, nor day, nor being, nor nonbeing, there is the Auspicious One, alone, absolute and eternal. There is the glorious splendor of that Light from whom in the beginning sprang ancient wisdom (Shvetashvatara Upanishad 4.18). Taking as a bow the great weapon of the Upanishad, one should put upon itan arrow sharpened by meditation. Stretching it with a thought directed to the essence of That, penetrate that Imperishable as the mark, myfriend (Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.3). The Aranyakas and Upanishads outline the soul s evolutionary journey, provide yogic philosophical training and propound realization of man s oneness with God as the destiny of all souls. Today, the Vedas are published in Sanskrit, English, French, German and other languages. But it is the popular, metaphysical Upanishads that have been most amply and ably translated.

JOTHY (7) Official Launching of Havis Pure Ghee In conjunction with Malaysia Hindu Sangam 37 th Annual General Meeting, in association with KS Jaya Traders, MHS has also launched its own product the Havis Ghee. Its 100% pure ghee highly suited for daily food application as well as for Hindu rituals. Mr. Khanna Simmathiri and Mr. Senthil Nathan of KS Jaya Traders said that Havis Ghee will be sold in two sizes, 800g tin and a pail of 15kg at the lowest price in the market. MHS encourage all the temples to use the Havis Ghee which is made of pure ghee from New Zealand. Ghee or clarified butter oil - often blamed for obesity and heart diseases - is not that bad after all. scientists have just discovered that cow ghee could protect us from cancer. Cow ghee enhances the availability of enzymes responsible for detoxification of cancer-causing substances and decreases the availability of those responsible for activation of carcinogens, scientists from the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) have reported in the latest issue of the Indian Journal of Medical Research. The new finding, however, does not mean you can go ahead with liberal amount of ghee in your food. One must ensure that the intake of total fat (including ghee) should not exceed the prescribed limit of fat consumption. Fights Cancer Researchers have deciphered the mechanism of ghee's protective properties. 'Feeding cow ghee decreased the expression of genes responsible for cell proliferation and raised regulated genes responsible for cell apoptosis', explained Dr Vinod Kansal, who led the research team. One probable factor in cow ghee is the presence of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is known to possess beneficial properties. Cow ghee is a rich natural source of CLA, whereas, vegetable oils lack this particular fatty acid. Most vegetable oils contain high amount of unsaturated fatty acid as well as linoleic acid - which is considered procarcinogenic as it forms free radicals known to damage DNA. Dr Kansal said 'Ghee poses no danger to cardiac health aslong as the total fat intake remains restricted to the prescribed limit. Moreover, ghee improves blood HDL level, which is good for heart, he added. 'I have serious reservation about doctors prescribing vegetable oil brands with highly unsaturated fat which is pro-carcinogenic,' the researcher said. Ghee is a premium cooking oil celebrated for its taste, nutritional benefits, and medicinal qualities. Ayurveda, the ancient medical science of India, recognizes ghee as an essential part of a balanced diet, and considers it to be the best fat one can eat. Ghee is the very essence of butter; the end result of a long, slow, careful clarification process that removes all the moisture, milk solids and impurities. The absence of milk solids and water in ghee make it completely shelf stable. Ghee has one of the highest flash points (485ºF) which make this oil the best choice for high temperature cooking. 9 JOTHY (9) Gayatri Mantra AUM BHOOR BHUWAH SWAHA, TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM BHARGO DEVASAYA DHEEMAHI DHIYO YO NAHA PRACHODAYAT Summary of the Gayatri Mantra Gayatri Mantra (the mother of the vedas), the foremost mantra in Hinduism and Hindu beliefs, inspires wisdom. Its meaning is that May the Almighty God illuminate our intellect to lead us along the righteous path. The mantra is also a prayer to the giver of light and life the sun (savitur). Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life, Remover of pain and sorrow, The Bestower of happiness, Oh! Creator of the Universe, May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light, May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction. 10 From Page 9/.. Gayatri Mantra in Sanskrit Gayatri, the five-faced Goddess, is said to have domain over the five senses or pranas, and protects these five life-forces of those who chant the Gayatri Mantra. In her role as the protector, Gayatri is referred to as Savitri. Origin, Benefits and Chanting of the Gayatri Mantra The Vedas are widely considered to be the source of all true knowledge, the word Veda itself meaning Knowledge. Gayatri Devi also gave to mankind the Gayatri Mantra, also known as the Guru Mantra or the Savitri Mantra. It is one of the oldest mantras, and generally thought of as being amongst the highest and most powerful mantras of all. This mantra is therefore often referred to as the Mother of the Vedas. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna had proclaimed to Arjuna Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri. Rishis selected the words of the Gayatri Mantra and arranged them so that they not only convey meaning but also create specific power of righteous wisdom through their utterance. The ideal times for chanting the mantra are three times a day at dawn, mid-day, and at dusk. These times are known as the three sandhyas morning, mid-day and evening. The maximum benefit of chanting the mantra is said to be obtained by chanting it 108 times. However, one may chant it for 3, 9, or 18 times when pressed for time. The syllables of the mantra are said to positively affect all the chakras or energy centres in the human body hence, proper pronunciation and enunciation are very important. Chanting of Gayatri Mantra removes all obstacles in our path to increased wisdom and spiritual growth and development. The teachings and powers incorporated in the Gayatri Mantra fulfill this purpose. Righteous wisdom starts emerging soon after Jap(recitation) of the Gayatri Mantra is performed. JOTHY (10) Sathya Sai Baba teaches that the Gayatri Mantra will protect you from harm wherever you are, make your intellect shine, improve your power of speech, and dispel the darkness of ignorance (Dhiyoyonah prachodayaath). References to the Gayatri Mantra in Scriptures The Upanisads (secret texts) of Hinduism contain several references to the Gayatri Mantra. Chandogya Upanisad ,2,5 (Qualities of Gayatri) This entire creation is Gayatri. And the Gayatri is speech for speech sings (gayati) and protects (trayati) this entire creation. Gayatri indeed is all this, whatever being exists. Speech indeed is Gayatri; for speech indeed sings and removes fear of all this that exists. That which is this Gayatri, even that is this earth; for on this earth are all the beings established and they do not transcend it. This well-known Gayatri is four-footed and six fold. Chandogya Upanisad (Origin of Bhur Bhuvah Svah) Prajapati (the progenitor of the worlds) brooded on the three worlds. From them he extracted their essences; fire from the earth, air from the sky and the sun from heaven. He further brooded on these three deities. From them he extracted their essences: the Riks (Rg-veda) from fire, the Yajus-mantras (Yajur-veda) from air, and the Saman (Sama-veda) from the sun. He brooded on the three Vedas. From them he extracted their existences; Bhuh from the Riks, Bhuvah from the Yajus-mantras and Svah from the Samans Therefore if the sacrifice is rendered defective on account of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans), then with the Mantra Bhuh Svaha (or Bhuvah Svaha or Svah Svaha ), the Brahman priest should offer an oblation in the fire. Thus verily, through the essence of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans), through the virility of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans), he makes good the injury of the sacrifice in respect of the Riks (or Yajus or Samans). 12 From Page 10 Brahadaranyaka Upanisad (Gayatri as the Protector) The Gayatri Mantra is based on truth. For truth is based on strength. Strength is breath, and is based on breath. So, Gayatri protects (tra) the wealth (gaya) (the breath!) of those who speak it with earnestness and devotion. When one recites Gayatri on behalf of someone, it protects that person s breath too! Brahadaranyaka Upanisad (Four foots of the Gayatri) This verse talks about the unbounded wealth contained within the four foots of the Gayatri Mantra. The first foot (AUM BHUR BHUVAH SVAHA) is said to be equivalent to the wealth contained in the three worlds put together. The second foot (TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM) is said to be equivalent to the wealth contained in the three main vedas. If one were to receive a gift extending as far as there are living beings, that would equal the third foot (BHARGO DEVASAYA DHEEMAHI). The fourth foot (DHEEYO YO NAH PRACHODYAAT) is based on the glory of the sun, whose power and wealth remains unequaled and unrivaled. Hence, there is no amount of wealth that can equal the fourth foot of the Gayatri! Gayatri Mantra Long Form and Praanayama The complete form (or long form) of the Gayatri Mantra contains an invocation to the seven spheres, followed by the traditional 24-syllable mantra that is most commonly chanted (Details of each syllable can be found in the Gayatri by Words article). The final part of the mantra is an invocation to the Goddess of light to illuminate our path as we move towards higher consciousness. AUM, the primordial sound, resides in all elements of the universe. It permeates the earth (-BHUH), water (-BHUVAH), fire (-SVAH), air (-MAHAH), ether (- JANAH), intelligence (-TAPAH) and consciousness (- SATYAM). We pay homage to Gayatri, the one who shines like the sun (tat savitur), the one who destroys all our sins through her everlasting and effulgent light. Dear Goddess Gayatri, please illuminate our path towards our higher consciousness and lead us to our true purpose in life. Please shine your light (- JYOTIH) in our path so we may partake of the everlasting nectar (RASOMRRITAM) of Brahman while chanting the primordial sound, AUM! Gayatri Mantra Mantra or Prayer? JOTHY (12) The Gayatri Mantra occupies a unique place in that it has both the power of mantra and of prarthana (prayer). It is important then in considering the Gayatri Mantra to distinguish the difference between these two deceptively similar words. A mantra may be articulate or inarticulate, or a combination of them, as with AUM. It has an inherent power, known as Mantra shakti, which has a positive influence not due to any philosophical meaning behind the mantra, but simply due to its utterance alone. A prayer on the other hand does have a philosophical meaning behind it, and it is generally through this meaning that the prayer or prarthana has its power. Since this meaning can be easily understood, the method of prarthana is generally the form of worship used by most people. The Gayatri, or Guru Mantra possesses both the power of mantra and the power of prarthana, and thus has both an intrinsic power (ie mantra shakti ), through its mere utterance alone, and also an instrumental power (ie prarthana shakti ), which is derived from the understanding of its meaning and philosophical significance. Hence, the repeated and correct chanting of the Gayatri Mantra, with proper understanding of its meaning, is believed to be of the greatest good to the individual. 13 Hindu Temple Worship The Science of Hindu Temples JOTHY (13) By: Paremasivem Subramaniam Artham Ulla Hindu Matham Scientific Reason There are thousands of temples all over India in different size, shape and locations but not all of them are considered to be built the Vedic way. Generally, a temple should be located at a place where earth's magnetic wave path passes through densely. It can be in the outskirts of a town/village or city, or in middle of the dwelling place, or on a hilltop. The essence of visiting a temple is discussed here. Now, these temples are located strategically at a place where the positive energy is abundantly available from the magnetic and electric wave distributions of north/south pole thrust. The main idol is placed in the core center of the temple, known as "Garbhagriha" or Moolasthanam. In fact, the temple structure is built after the idol has been placed. This Moolasthanam is where earth s magnetic waves are found to be maximum. We know that there are some copper plates, inscribed with Vedic scripts, buried beneath the Main Idol. What are they really? No, they are not God s / priests flash cards when they forget the shlokas. The copper plate absorbs earth s magnetic waves and radiates it to the surroundings. Thus a person regularly visiting a temple and walking clockwise around the Main Idol receives the beamed magnetic waves and his body absorbs it. This is a very slow process and a regular visit will let him absorb more of this positive energy. Scientifically, it is the positive energy that we all require to have a healthy life. Further, the Sanctum is closed on three sides. This increases the effect of all energies. The lamp that is lit radiates heat energy and also provides light inside the sanctum to the priests or poojaris performing the pooja. The ringing of the bells and the chanting of prayers takes a worshipper into trance, thus not letting his mind waver. When done in groups, this helps people forget personal problems for a while and relieve their stress. The fragrance from the flowers, the burning of camphor give out the chemical energy further aiding in a different good aura. The effect of all these energies is supplemented by the positive energy from the idol, the copper plates and utensils in the Moolasthanam / Garbagraham. Con t Page 14/

From Page 13/ JOTHY (14) Theertham, the holy water used during the pooja to wash the idol is not plain water cleaning the dust off an idol. It is a concoction of Cardamom, Karpur (Benzoin), zaffron / saffron, *Tulsi* (Holy Basil), Clove, etc... Washing the idol is to charge the water with the magnetic radiations thus increasing its medicinal values. Three spoons of this holy water is distributed to devotees. Again, this water is mainly a source of magneto-therapy. Besides, the clove essence protects one from tooth decay, the saffron & Tulsi leafs protects one from common cold and cough, cardamom and Pachha Karpuram (benzoin), act as mouth fresheners. It is proved that Theertham is a very good blood purifier, as it is highly energized. Hence it is given as prasadam to the devotees. Our practices are NOT some hard and fast rules framed by 1 man and his followers or God s words in somebody s dreams. All the rituals, all the practices are, in reality, well researched, studied and scientifically backed thesis which form the ways of nature to lead a good healthy life. The scientific and research part of the practices are well camouflaged as elder s instructions or granny s teaching s which should be obeyed as a mark of respect so as to once again, avoid stress to the mediocre brains. This way, one can claim to remain healthy by regularly visiting the Temples. This is why our elders used to suggest us to offer prayers at the temple so that you will be cured of many ailments. They were not always superstitious. Yes, in a few cases they did go overboard when due to ignorance they hoped many serious diseases could be cured at temples by deities. When people go to a temple for the Deepaaraadhana, and when the doors open up, the positive energy gushes out onto the persons who are there. The water that is sprinkled onto the assemblages passes on the energy to all. This also explains why men are not allowed to wear shirts at a few temples and women are requested to wear more ornaments during temple visits. It is through these jewels (metal) that positive energy is absorbed by the women. Also, it is a practice to leave newly purchased jewels at an idol s feet and then wear them with the idol s blessings. This act is now justified after reading this article. This act of seeking divine blessings before using any new article, like books or pens or automobiles may have stemmed from this through mere observation. Energy lost in a day s work is regained through a temple visit and one is refreshed slightly. The positive energy that is spread out in the entire temple and especially around where the main idol is placed, are simply absorbed by one's body and mind. Did you know, every Vaishnava(Vishnu devotees), must visit a Vishnu temple twice every day in their location. Madurai Meenachi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu (Top) is an icon of Hindu Temples. It remains majestic among thousands of Temples in the world. Temples are said to be the House of God on Earth. The moment you step into a temple compound, you are in fact stepping into the Embassy of God where you become immortal body become fully charged. JOTHY

The History of Sri Tirupati Balaji - Sri Venkateswara from the Puranas Vaikunda Ramana Vengketa Ramana Shrinivaasa, Govinda! Govinda! JOTHY (15) The Rishis headed by Kasyapa began to perform a sacrifice (yaga) on the banks of the Ganges. Sage Narada visited them at that time and asked them to tell him why they were performing the sacrifice and who would be pleased by it. Not being able to answer the question the Rishis approached Sage Bhrigu. To reach a solution after a direct ascertainment of reality, Sage Bhrigu first went to Satyaloka (the abode of Lord Brahma). There, he found Brahma reciting the four Vedas with his four heads in praise of Lord Narayana and attended upon by Sarasvati and not taking notice of Bhrigu offering obeisance. Concluding that Brahma was unfit for worship, Bhrigu left Brahmaloka for Kailasa. At Kailasa, Bhrigu found Lord Siva spending his time pleasantly with Parvati and not noticing the Sage Bhrigu. Parvati drew the attention of Siva to the presence of the salord Siva became furious at the intrusion of Bhrigu and tried to destroy him. The sage cursed and left for Vaikuntham. The angry sage went to Shri Vaikuntham. Shrimannarayana was reposing at that time on Adisesha with Shri Mahalakshmi at His feet in service. Finding that Shrimannarayana also did not notice him, the sage was infuriated and he kicked the Lord on His chest, the place where Mahalakshmi resides. At once the Lord hastened to make apologies to the angry Sage and pressed his feet to allay the pain caused to the leg. In doing so the Lord removed the eye in the foot of the Sage, which gave him power as to defy the Devas. The Sage thereupon decided that Shri MahaVishnu was the most Supreme of the Trimurtis and told the Rishis the same.they thereupon decided that Shri MahaVishnu was the fruit of the Yaga and sacrifice was offered to Him (VishnuAt the commencement of the present Sveta Varaha Kalpa, the whole Universe was filled with water and the earth was immersed in it. Con t Page 16

From Page 15/ JOTHY (16) Lord Vishnu took to form of a White Boar and dived into the water to lift the earth. He slew the demon Hiranyaksha who caused obstruction to him and rescued the earth. Brahma and the other Devas extolled Shri Varaha at the time with the chanting of the Vedas and showered flowers on him for saving the Earth. Lord Vishnu decided to stay on Earth in the form of the White Boar for some time, to punish the wicked and protect the virtuous. This place thenceforward came to be known as Varaha Kshetra and Varaha Kalpa began from that time. After the departure of Mahalakshmi, Lord Vishnu left Vaikuntha in a forlorn condition and took his abode in an ant-hill on the Venkata Hill under a tamarind tree beside a Pushkarini. Brahma and Mahesvara, taking pity on the condition of Vishnu, made up their mind to assume the forms of a cow and its calf to serve him. The Sun God informed Mahalakshmi of this and requested her to sell the cow and calf to the king of the Chola country assuming the form of a cowherdess. The king of the Chola country bought the cow and its calf and sent them to graze on the Venkata Hill along with his herd of cattle. Discovering Lord Vishnu in the ant-hill, the cow everyday emptied her under over the ant-hill and thus fed the LORD. Finding that the cow did not yield any milk, the Chola Queen chastised the cowherd severely. To find out the cause of the absence of milk, the cowherd followed the cow and hid himself in a bush and discovered the cow emptying her under over the anthill. Getting wild over the conduct of the cow, the cowherd aimed a blow with his axe on the head of the cow. But the God rose from the ant-hill to receive the blow and save the cow. When the cowherd saw the Lord bleed at the blow of his axe he fell down and died. On the death of the cowherd, the cow returned bellowing to the presence of the Chola King with blood stains over her body. To find out the cause of the terror of the cow the Chola King followed her to the scene of the incident. Near an ant-hill, the King found the cowherd lying dead on the ground. While he stood wondering how it had happened, the Lord rose from the ant-hill and cursed the king to become an Asure from the fault of his servant. Up Seven Hills at Tirupathy Entreated by the king who pleaded innocence, the Lord blessed him by saying that His curse would end when He was adorned with the Kireetam presented by Akasa Raja at the time of His marriage with Shri Padmavati.hereafter Shrinivasa decided to stay in this Varaha Kshetra. He therefore requested Shri Varahaswami to grant Him a site for His stay. His request being readily granted, Shrinivasa ordained that a pilgrimage to His shrine would not be complete unless it is preceded by a bath in the Pushkarini and Darsan of Shri VarahaSwami, and that Puja and Naivedyam should be offered to Shri Varaha first. Yasoda brought up Shri Krishna, the son of Devaki, in his early years. Yasoda was not blessed to witness the marriage of Shri Krishna with Rukmini and she felt very sad. Shri Krishna promised to fulfil her desire in her next birth as Vakuladevi in his next Avatara as Shrinivasa. This Vakuladevi was sent to serve Shrinivasa by Lord Varahasvami, on whom she was attending till Shrinivasa came to Venkatachala. Sometime after, a King named Akasa Raja who belonged to the Lunar race was ruling over Thondamandalam. He had a brother named Thondaman. Con t Page 17

From Page 16/ JOTHY (17) JOTHY (16) Akasa Raja had no issue for a long time and so he wanted to perform a sacrifice for obtaining an offspring. While he was himself ploughing and ground for sacrifice, his plough turned up a lotus in the ground. On examining the lotus, the King found a female child in it. The king was happy to find a child even before he performed a sacrifice and carried it to his place and gave it to his Queen to tend it. At that time he heard an aerial voice which said "O King, tend it as your child and fortune will befall you". As she was found in a lotus, the king named her Padmavati. In course of time Princess Padmavati grew up into a beautiful maiden and was attended by a host of maids. One day while she was spending her time in a garden picking flowers with her maids, Saint Narada approached her. Assuring her that he was her wellwisher, he asked her to show him her palm to read her future. He foretold that she was destined to be the spouse of Lord Vishnu himself. At this time Lord Shrinivasa, who went for hunting chased a wild elephant in the forests surrounding the hills. In the pursuit, Shrinivasa was led into a garden, where Princess Padmavati and her maids were picking flowers. The sight of the elephant frightened them and their Princess. But the Elephant immediately turned round and saluted the Lord and disappeared in the forest.lord Shrinivasa came on horse back and saw the frightened maidens and he was accosted by them with queries. Lord Shrinivasa had explained them about his birth and parentage. He enquired them about their princess and her parentage and birth. When he was informed that the Princess was Padmavati (lotus-born) the foster Daughter of Akasaraja, he loved her and made advances to the Princess. He was repulsed with stones by the maids and he urgently returned to the hills leaving the horse, which fell on the ground Vakuladevi, as usual, brought dinner to Shrinivasa comprising various delicious dishes. But she found him lying on his bed love-sick. She enquired the cause of his sickness. The Lord informed her that unless he secured Princess Padmavati, he would not be well. Vakuladevi then asked him to tell her all about the Princess, who she was, and how he came to love her. The Lord then narrated the story of her (Padmavati s) previous birth and his promise to wed her. In olden times Lakshmi was staying as Vedavati in a Rishi Asrama in the forests. At that time Ravana, the lord of Lanka came there and tried to tempt her. Vedavati grew angry and cursed him that she would bring about his death. To fulfil her words, Vedavati entered into the fire but the fire-god rescued her. He took Vedavati to his house and entrusted her to his wife to take care of her. When Ravana was about to carry away Sita from Panchavati in the absence of Rama and Lakshmana, the Fire-God appeared on the scene and offered Vedavati to Ravana as the real Sita who was kept with him by Rama to evade Ravana. Ravana took Vedavati to Lanka thinking she was the real Sita, while Agni(Fire-God) took Sita to his house and asked his wife Swahadevi to look after her. After the destruction of Ravana, Vedavati entered the fires when rejected by Rama. Then the Fire-God offered the real Sita to Rama. Rama then questioned her as to who the other lady by her side was. Sita informed Rama that she was Vedavati who suffered all the tortures for her sake for ten months in Lanka and requested Rama to accept her also as his spouse. But Rama declined her request saying that he was wedded to policy of having only one wife during his life time, and he promised to wed her in her next birth as Padmavati, born as the daughter of Akasaraja when he will take the form of Shrinivasa. There upon Vakuladevi thought that Shrinivasa would not be happy unless he married Padmavati and she offered to go to Akasaraja and his queen and arrange for the marriage. On the way she met the maidservants of Padmavati returning from a Siva Temple. She learnt from them about Padmavathi's love-sickness and went to the queen along with them Akasaraja and his queen Dharanidevi became anxious about the health of their daughter. They learnt about Padmavati's love for Shrinivasa of Venkata Hill. Akasaraja consulted Brihaspati about the propriety of the marriage and was informed that the marriage was in the best interests. After the departure of Vakuladevi Shrinivasa could not rest in peace. He doubted her success in the mission. He therefore assumed the form of a Yerukula-woman and entered the streets of the capital telling fortunes. Padmavati's maids saw her and invited her to the presence of their queen. Con t 18/

From Page 17/ JOTHY (18) The maid-servants went and informed the queen that the fortune-teller was hesitating to come into the palace without an invitation from the queen. The queen came out herself and invited the fortune-teller into the palace.the fortune-teller was taken to the presence of Princess Padmavati. The fortune-teller saw the palm of the Princess and told the queen about the cause of Padmavati's indisposition and advised to give her in marriage to Lord Shrinivasa. She also told the queen that a lady would approach her shortly to formally request Padmavati's hand in marriage on behalf of Shrinivasa. After the departure of the fortune-teller, Vakuladevi went to the queen along with the maids and informed her that she came from Shrinivasa to request the hand of Padmavati in marriage for him. Having consulted Brihaspati and heard from his queen about the prediction of the fortune-teller and arrival of the messenger, from Shrinivasa, Akasaraja decided to bestow his daughter on Shrinivasa and he called the palace purohits to fix a Muhurtam for the marriage. Akasaraja informed his Ministers and other Officials of his intention. Immediately a letter was drafted for being sent to Shrinivasa requesting him to come and marry the Princess. Akasaraja entrusted the letter to Sukamahamunin for being delivered to Shrinivasa. Suka went to Venkata Hill with Vakulamalikadevi. He presented the Patrika to Lord Shrinivasa, who felt pleased and sent his garland through him for Padmavati. Immediately Lord Shrinivasa called for a conference of the Gods to win their consent for His marriage with Princess Padmavati. To meet the expenses of the marriage, Kubera lent money to the Lord. Lord Shrinivasa started for the residence of Akasaraja with his consorts and Brahma and Siva and his vehicle Garutman. At the entrance the Lord was received by Akasaraja with all honours and was taken in procession on a mounted elephant to the palace for the marriage. In the presence of all the Devas, Lord Shrinivasa took the hand of the Princess Padmavati and wedded her and thus blessed Akasaraja.

100 Years Old Temple Gets a Remake Chembong Sri Mahamariamman Temple The New Temple Under Construction JOTHY (19) Located along the main road of Jalan Seremban- Tampin in Chembong, Kuil Sri Mahamariamman has been around for more than 100 years. Built by the Estate Workers during the British occupation the Temple was an icon as Chembong was only a small bypass town with very few buildings. Lechumanan Govindasamy, 67 years old who is the Temple Advisor said that the Temple s last know record was in 1918 when it underwent a Kumbabishegam but further commented that it was only an indicative date as his father and even grand father worshipped Goddess Maha Mariamman in a small shine years before that. During those days, Indians often gather in the Temple for all reasons. It was a center for worship, past time, community activities, announcement and even political gathering. Today headed by a committee of devoted residence in Chembong, Negeri Sembilan, the Temple is being rebuilt in a moderate scale. Ground work and initial structures have been erected. Work is in progress. The Temple Management humbly urge Hindus to support the building of Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Chembong. The Temple is a registered body and is also a member of the Malaysian Hindu Sangam. The Temple still plays an important role in uniting Indians who numbers over 1,000 families with a population of over 4,000 Hindus. Chembong has grown from its small town size to a industrial zone. As a result, we have a large population of Nepalese workers too who frequents the Temple. There are 8 new housing estates with no temple within the vicinity. The Temple is indeed an importance more then a necessity. 20 The Science Behind Ear Piercing Hinduism is Scientific JOTHY (20) Contributed by SV.NAVIN KUMAR HYPNOTHERAPIST When I was young, I use to ask my great grandmother whom had almost pierced 10 pairs of earrings why do you pierce your ears? Her reply would be that It s all for good health the routine reply that s been provided when each time I query on any of our rituals or traditional habits and deeds. It s been a prolonged query in my mind on why do we pierce our ears, what is the justification behind this tradition? I was keeping searching for the right reason behind such tradition. Adding on to the same query, hereby I also would like to share my experience during my visit to Pakistan due to work alliances. There I used to go to a Krishna Temple. Yes, there were Hindus there, in Pakistan which was quite surprising for me, where initially I had a perception that Pakistan comprises of 100% Muslim citizen. There I had a chance to have a chat with Mr. Gokhul Nath, the trustee of the temple. He had 3 sons, where all of them including Mr. Gokhul himself, had pierced both their ears. When I raised in the question to him on why do they had pierced their ears, that s when I got introduced to the term acupuncture. Based on his (Mr. Gokhul) justification, what I could interpret was if acupuncture, the medical method is somehow related to the tradition of ear piercing, then definitely this tradition should contain some scientific reasons behind it. To obtain a clearer perspective on this matter, I moved to researching through a few other vedha s for reference. That s when I came across the Karna Vedha, which consist of some relativism to this ear piercing tradition among Hindus. Based on my readings in Karna Veda and also a few occasions of discussing with a Swamiji, in Kollimalai, Tamil Naadu, ear piercing is completely scientific, where there are justifications behind this action. Adding on to this, the actual ear piercing contains some rules as well which is though a matter of Hinduism but it is scientifically justified too. A few of those rules and justifications would be as stated below: I. A child should be pierced his/her ears between the age of 1 to 3 years old. (both ears) II. Must bald the head before piercing. III. Only silver or gold earring should be worn. Justification: It s has proven scientifically that, a human nerve system would get stronger from 1 year old onwards till the they turn 3. After 3 years old, the system tends to get stiffer. So when the nervous system is still fresh, at the beginning stage of getting activated, that s when the ears should be pierced. When earrings are pierced especially gold earrings, they tend to energize our blood circulation to run smooth via the vibration (developed for the metal: gold/silver). When this occurs, there will least chances, for blockages, and 95% of resolution of hair fall problems. (this is proven scientifically) Balding the head, before piercing, resembles a scientific reason too. When the babies (aged between 1 to 3 years old) are being bald, then being pierced with gold or silver earrings, this lead them to have a strong and health new cells growth (for hair), which resolve the hair falling problem. Actually, there are total of 24 spots (shown in the picture below) that can be pierced to embrace the discussed scientific benefits. (through ear piercing).but it would not be that much applicable at the current era which is modernized. But the concern that I would like to raise here, at least one whole/spot should be pierced to ensure that we do cater ourselves with the mentioned scientific benefits. If we notice, all of our Hindu Gods/Goddess have pierced their ears, the ancient kings as well. This resembles that, we Hindus, had been implementing the ear piercing tradition as to enhance the scientific benefits among us. In a nutshell, we Hindus can strongly indicate that all of our ritual and tradition do consist some valid scientific reasons behind them. That s why I m proud to say that Hinduism is Scientific.

What is Hinduism? By Rajenthiran Rasappan JOTHY (21) A rare inside look at the world s most venerable and vibrant religion, revealed in forty-six illustrated journeys into an intriguing realm of temples, Deities, yoga, philosophy, gurus tolerance and family life. From the Editors ofhinduism Today Magazine. THE JOYS OF HINDUISM Today we want to speak on the joys and happiness found in Hinduism, our ancient religion which brings forth the wonderful feelings of a belief in the cosmic processes of reincarnation coupled with knowledge of the laws of karma and the wisdom of dharma in which everyone has his rightful place and purpose in life. It brings the broadmindedness of total acceptance of all other religions as expressions of the One God s creation, the blessing of a complete devotional path revolving around powerful temples, the fulfilment of a profound mystical teaching founded on yoga and brought forth by the seers and saints and gurus and so much more. Our religion is so strong, so rich and varied that very few can claim to understand it in its completeness. It is immense, an immense religion, so immense that we had difficulty sometimes explaining it to those who hold to a simpler doctrine, especially if they have been subjected to erroneous concept about our religion promulgated by invaders and missionaries of a score of alien religions. It is time that the world knew of the greatness of Hinduism, knew it as it is. Of course, we cannot explain it in an evening. My satguru the great Siva Yogaswami of Columbuthurai, would say, The time is short and the subject is vast. But we can have a look at some of the aspects of Hinduism that bring such joys and happiness to over a billion devotees around the world. Each Hindu s belief in reincarnation is so strong that it totally eliminates the fear and dread of death. No true Hindu really fears death; nor does he look forward to it. The world death in the vocabulary of the Hindu holds a different meaning. He does not take death to be the end of existence; nor does he look upon life as a singular opportunity to be followed by eternal heavenly existence for those souls who do well and by unending hell for those who do not. Death for the Hindu is merely transition, simultaneously an end and a new beginning. Over two thousand years ago, Saint Tiruvalluvar wrote, Death is like failing asleep and birth is like awakening from that sleep (Tirukural 339). In one of the ancient languages of our religion, the physical body had a name which literally meant that which is always dropping off. The Hindu s knowledge of reincarnation gives him the hope of attaining a future birth and in that birth making further progress toward the perfection that he intuitively knows is his atman, his soul. He is working in this life to gain enough good merit, enough punya, to deserve welcome into a fine religious family as a good soul that will not upset the family but add to its love and harmony and productivity. That is one aim ever on the mind of the devout Hindu, to live well that he may live even more perfectly in a future life on this planet. That is our aim; and our other beliefs, our accumulated knowledge and the many facets of our religion, give us the strength and the wisdom to believe in such a far-reaching way, to look beyond the immediate day-to-day concerns into our ultimate objective, which is realization and liberation, moksha. Nor is this belief in the cycles of earthly existence, in reincarnation, merely a belief. It is a certain knowledge for those who have had even a tiny glimpse into their origins to the point of remembering another life or just intuiting that the soul did not come into existence just before one s birth. The Hindu believes that the soul undertakes many sojourns on the planet. We see the wisdom in this cycle of birth, death and rebirth. The Famous Tanjavoor Peria Koil Pregatheaswaran

Pradosham Technology of Karma Removal A MUST READ by ALL HINDUS JOTHY (22) The Saturday pradosham is a very powerful pradosham, called the great pradosham or Maha pradosham especially if it fall during Waning Moon (Dark Moon period) as the first pradosham observed in ancient times is said to have been on a Saturday. Monday Pradoshams are also special because Mondays are most fit for Lord Shiva and it is the day ruled by His consort goddess Parvathi. When Does it Occur? All Pradoshams occur between 1-1/2 hours before and right up until the moment of sunset in the time zone where you are physically. The smaller energy level Pradoshams occur every day during this time. Lord Shiva requested Siddha Thirumular (also known as Sundarar, one of 63 saivite saints) who was helping God Shiva, to bring the poison to Him. Thirumular immediately brought the poison in a shape of a ball about the size of a Navakani and handed over to God Shiva. God Shiva then swallowed this poison which stuck to His throat blue in colour. Removing Sins with Pradosham Technology Pradosham literally means the removal of sins (Pra - Removal, Dosham - Sin). Pradosham is a specific window of time that occurs during the day. The energy during this time makes it easier to dissolve and release karma. Stories, prayers and rituals have been built around this time to help us better work with and understand the significance of these karma busting energies. There are different energy levels to Pradosham depending on which day of the month that it occurs. Each energy level indicates how much karma may be released at that time. Pradosham are a gift from the Universe to help speed our evolution and make our lives easier and happier. Con t Page 23/ The middle energy level Pradoshams occur twice each month - on the 13th moon day after the New Moon and after the Full Moon. To determine on which days these Pradosham occur, begin your count on the actual New Moon or Full Moon day and count that day as "1". Continue the count until you reach "13". If you are counting from the Full Moon, Pradosham will normally occur two days before the next New Moon, and if you are counting from the New Moon Pradosham will normally occur two days before the next Full Moon. The larger energy level Pradosham occurs when one of the 13th moon days occurs on a Saturday. The planet Saturn is considered the Lord of Karma who delivers many of life's tougher lessons to help us refine and evolve their souls. On a Saturday Pradosham it is believed that Lord Shiva has more influence over Saturn and can cause Saturn to loosen or release entirely some of the karmic bonds that limit us. Kasi Visvawanathan Omsivanalayam, Kg. Pasir, Seremban

From Page 21/ Cosmic Energy from the Shiva Lingam As a Result of Pradosham Pooja JOTHY (23) There are many levels of benefit from Pradosham. On the most immediate, practical level it is an opportunity to cleanse and release more of the karmic poisons that can limit our freedom and happiness. That s Why it is Best to be Present during Pradosham (Energy Rays Radiate covering over 50 meters Radius) Be in a meditative mode during the pradosham time and chant the "Thiru Neela Kantam" mantra by focusing your mind in throat region. If can try to visualize blue colour while you chant this powerful mantra with focusing around your throat region. Pradosham and God Realization The purpose of our human life is God realization. But Siddhas tell you that you can get to your life purpose only when your karma has been wiped clean, and the time is ripe for grace to flow to you. When that happens an intense flowering happens, and both the material and spiritual worlds open up for you. You have a choice then on the abundance that you are presented with. Whether you take the spiritual or material route, one thing is certain: you have to completely eliminate your karma to even to get there. Pradosham rituals give a great opportunity to build a road to prosperity and true happiness. On the 13th Moon Pradosham days, special poojas are offered to Lord Shiva who eliminates your karma and helps to bring light into your life. Nandikeswaran Nandi or the divine bull has a special place in Lord Shiva`s heart. Nandi is the privileged one who carries flowers to Mt. Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. Nandi is not a mere bull but a divine Sage who has guided endless number of Rishis. Even now when one prays with devotion to Nandi, you can see miraculous results happening. Nandi is the one who carried the poisons from Paarkadal to Kailas hill and later Thirumular change the poison in a shape of a ball about Navakanni and handed over to Lord Shiva to swallowed. God Shiva performs Ananda Thandavam (Cosmic Dance) in between the horns of Nandikeswarer If One Observes One day Pradosham pooja, it is equivalent to 15 days temple worship. 11 days Pradosham Poojas, it is equivalent to observing on temple Kumbabishegam. If one observes 120 Pradoshams, it is believed that one will have no more births. If one observes Maha Pradoshams, which falls on a Saturday, one will attain the blessings and benefits from Lord Shiva equivalent to praying for 5 years. Chant: Tiru Neela Kantam, Tiru Neela Kantam, Tiru Neela Kantam during Pradosham and obtain its real benefit. Con t Page 24/

From Page 22/ JOTHY (24) Puranam The esoteric benefits of Pradosham are outlined in part of a wonderful story of when the angels and demons in Ancient times joined together to try and get an elixir of immortality. They used a magical snake that volunteered to serve as a rope to churn a magical mountain in a magical ocean of milk. The angels pulled from the snake's tail and demons pulled from the snake's head. They worked very hard and were rewarded with many gifts that emerged from the ocean, including Goddess Lakshmi, who is the Hindu equivalent of Venus. Eventually the elixir emerged. However, fate turned the moment of victory into a terrible disaster. The snake was in so much pain from the constant pulling that it vomited poison just as the elixir emerged. The elixir and the entire area started burning from the poison. No one was able to stop the destruction so the angels and demons prayed for help. The story continues that Lord Shiva heard their prayers, gathered up the poison with and swallowed it, saving the elixir along with everyone and everything. By goddess Parvathi command, the poison froze in the Lords throat, painting it blue and becoming an embellishment, gave Him the name Neelakantan. [It is also a common practice for womanhood to worship Goddess Parvathi for long life of Husbands as She is having Maangalya Baagyam and could turn the poison into nectar]. NOTE : Pradosham Time in Malaysia & Singapore The actual Pradosham time in Malaysia and Singapore is from 5.00pm to 7 pm but unfortunately most of the temple mistakenly observing from 4.30 pm to 6 pm just by simply following temples in India. In India the Sun set time is at 6.00pm but in Malaysia and Singapore the Sun set time is at 6.30pm. Pradosham occur between 1-1/2 hours before and right up until the moment of sunset. Enlighten your local temple head or priest by giving this article and start to observe the ritual for Pradosham at the right time. Remember, what you do is important but when you do it is just important. The efficacy of spiritual practices can be increased greatly by timing it according to Siddha injunctions. Moorthy on His Birthday Celebration organised by the Malaysia Hindu Sangam, Negeri Sembilan State Council. Translated in English to be as close as possible Oh young lion who is Malaysian Hindu Sangam s leader, dwelled in the hearts of Tamilians. In fact we just got to know you but time has passed so fast nevertheless you are just halfway your 100 golden years ahead. You are born to accomplish great heights. Coming from the land once ruled by the Mighty Cholan Empire call Kadaram, no wonder you poses such great bravery and sharpness. Or are you from the great warrior class? Because of these inborn qualities you are able to maneuver even your enemies by your fluent oratory skills Your leadership is regarded as a precious gem stone. Being the protector and defender of Hinduism, Hindus today stand proud because of you. Despite tons of oppression, as a leader you are able to overcome all challenges without causing a bit of dejection from us. We stand by you as our Leader We pray to God in one spirit to Bless Upon You with Good Health and Success. Happy Birthday Dear Datuk RS Mohan Shan - JOTHY
