1 FIRST NEWS First United Methodist Church Volume 9 Issue 3 March 2018 As United Methodists this is our mission: to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Where are you seeing God? Seeing God in our Discipleship So, we ve all thought about where we are in our own, personal discipleship process. We pushed little colored pins into the appropriate shapes on the Narthex Discipleship Board to indicate the ministries we were engaged in last year. We pushed red pins into the shapes to indicate the ministries we plan to take on in Now the big question: Here s the thing. Once we intentionally pursue growing as disciples of Jesus Christ, and engaging in ministry as His hands and feet, God shows up. Well actually, God was there all the time, but nothing enables us to SEE and EXPERIENCE God s presence like getting involved in growth and ministry. There is something wondrous about discovering God at work in us. We hear God s voice as we join others in Bible Study and fellowship. We feel God s love as we reach out to take the hand of the suffering. We see God s face as we look into the eyes of those we serve. Sometimes all it takes is opening our minds to the possibility that God is here, doing God s thing, when, WHAMO! We experience God first hand. For example Every week I have our Confirmation class join in a circle to pray at the end of our class. Every week the young people reluctantly circle up and join hands with giggles and shuffling feet, embarrassed at the prospect of saying a prayer out loud; hesitant to expose themselves before their peers in such an intimate way. Until three weeks ago. We had just spent our class putting together the Ash Wednesday service. The youth had outdone themselves by thinking of creative ways to help the adults who would attend the upcoming service, to really, REALLY think about what Ash Wednesday and Lent are all about. That evening, as we made our prayer circle, there were still giggles and shuffling feet, but the content of the prayer changed. They were engaged. They were actually talking to God about their hopes for Ash Wednesday. They started naming personal needs and concerns. Suddenly it was very apparent that God was right there. With us. I saw the face of Jesus in the faces of my confirmands, and I went home saying, Thank you Lord for reminding me why I do what I do. How about you? What changes are resulting from your commitment to grow in new ways, and be involved in new ministries? Where are you seeing God in your life and in the lives of those around you? I want to hear your stories. I invite you to call me to schedule a time to come to my NEW IMPROVED office (now located in the former library) so I can hear all about what God is doing in your life. Give me a call. (575) Let s experience God together. Worship Times Sunday School - 9:15 AM Sunday Worship - 10:30 Pastor Tina Page 1
