SECRET OF SUCCESS The readings are fairly simple and straightforward. Do just these two things love God with your whole self and love your neighbor as yourself and you will be saved.

Mark says that loving God completely must also be accompanied by loving our neighbor. Jesus loved his Father with his whole soul, his whole mind, his whole strength.

2 SECRET OF SUCCESS The readings are fairly simple and straightforward. Do just these two things love God with your whole self and love your neighbor as yourself and you will be saved. Deuteronomy and the psalm emphasize the importance of loving God with our whole selves. Hebrews reminds us that Jesus loved us as he loved his Father and so he offered himself for our sins. Mark says that loving God completely must also be accompanied by loving our neighbor. Jesus loved his Father with his whole soul, his whole mind, his whole strength. The love between God and Jesus makes them one. Everything hinges on the completeness and the inclusiveness of that love. LOVE We all love rules to measure our actions and assure us that we have done enough. Today we are given two rules that offer us none of that. First, there is the promise that God's mercy will be showered not only upon the Israelites, but one day upon all the Gentile nations as well. Secondly, the People of Israel are encouraged not only to believe in Divine Mercy and to call upon the Lord, but also to be merciful, that is, to live mercifully. The prophet Isaiah, for example, continually encourages the Israelites to trust in God's mercy: "Then a throne will be established in steadfast love [hesed] and on it will sit in faithfulness in the tent of David one who judges and seeks justice and is swift to do righteousness." Isaiah teaches them that they must wait patiently for God's mercy to manifest itself, even as He has waited patiently for their conversion (38:10): "Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore He exalts Himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him." When the Lord does pour out His mercy upon Israel, however, He will do so in abundance (40: 29-31): He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might He increases strength. focus only on love: love of God and love of neighbor. There are not seven or ten. There are just two. You must love God but you must do it with your entire being. Everything you are must be focused on and reflect loving God. And then you must love your neighbor. The first is key to the second. Unless we understand how God loves both the lovable as well as the unlovable, we will never be able to love ourselves or any other creature or creation as God loves them all. The Gospels remind us that Jesus sought the broken, the marginalized, the unwanted to teach us how God loves. If everything about you is about loving a God who created and redeemed you, then you love as God loves. If you love as God loves, you recognize the weakness in yourself and in the world yet you still love that broken self and broken world as its Creator does. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; Upon Him was the chastisement that made us whole, And with His stripes we are healed.
