James Plyburn 1813 Rayon Drive Parkersburg, WV Church Office: Pastor Jim s Cell Phone: ; Parsonage: Church address: spumc1813@gmail.com website: southparkersburgumc.org Thuse News To Know Christ and to Make Christ Known South Parkersburg United Methodist Church Newsletter Pastor s Message Christ is Risen! Christ is Risen, Indeed! Thanks be to God, for loving us enough to send His Son to live and die for us! Thanks to each of you, for making the celebration of Easter a joyous and special occasion at South Parkersburg United Methodist Church! Memories that I will cherish include the Mid-Ohio Valley Easter Parade, with our award winning float and dozens of children, youth and adults walking or riding along Palm Sunday with another parade in our sanctuary children waving palms and raising their voices in song special music provided by an awesome young men s quartet Easter Egg Hunt at the parsonage and a visit from the Easter Bunny inspiring Holy Week services and delicious meals at Trinity UMC beautiful Easter morning Sonrise service and breakfast with Mt. Pleasant UMC glorious Easter worship service in our sanctuary enhanced by the beauty and fragrance of Spring flowers and the flowered cross! What a wonderful and memorable Easter it was! The challenge now before us is to continue to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, as we seek opportunities to invite others to receive the gift of salvation God offers freely to all who will put their faith and trust in Jesus. I look forward to facing this challenge together, and sharing in many more memorable events in the name of the Risen Savior! Pastor Jim Easter Memories
2 Backpack Blessings Ministry Still Growing!!!!! As soon as I gave this article to Mom, this ministry grew again! I had to call her and tell her to increase Gihon by one and the total by one! So, depending on your outlook, that can be both good news and bad news. The bad news is that there is such a need in a community; the good news is that SPUMC is answering the call to help fill that need! April was a busy month. Our numbers swelled to 18 children at Fairplains and 9 at Gihon. That s 27 weekly bags that we distributed to the schools. I just can t say No! when the schools call. We continue to provide a copy of the weekly children s bulletin in the bags and this month, we also added a special treat for Easter weekend. We hope to have a representative from the schools join us one Sunday in May to give an update to the congregation on how this ministry is helping the community. Even though school will be over soon, we plan to continue taking donations during the summer so we can start the new school year with a stockpile of food! If we have enough, the plan is to add Martin Elementary and Edison Middle School to the program in the fall. This will mean we ll be servicing all four elementary and middle schools in South Parkersburg. This plan will only be accomplished with the help of your continued monetary donations, food donations, and especially your PRAYERS! Sam Backyard Ministry Spring is finally here and as I write this so is the rain. The rain refreshes everything and nudges the flowers, leaves and grass brightening the world. Spring is a time when many of us replace indoor or patio furniture and other household items. If you are replacing or just getting rid of things around your house which are still usable please consider donating them to the Backyard Ministry. If they are small items bring them to the church. If you have furniture or larger items please see us about picking them up. We can normally pick them up within a few days and take the items directly to a family who can use them. Remember, it has been said that one mans trash is another mans treasure. Many of our backyard friends moved on during the last few months. Some went on to better circumstances and some just moved on. For us as a church family that means there are new families moving into the park. More importantly it means new opportunities to show our Christian love to our neighbors and to Make Christ Known through our words, deeds and by the examples we set. Many of the new folks moving in come with very little. They are always in need of any kind of furniture. Many do not have beds, a couch, chairs or a table. They often need dishes, pots & pans, and greatly appreciate small kitchen wares(toaster, coffee pot, mixer or microwave) along with towels and sheets. Every one of them will need at least a couple of fans when the heat of summer comes they do not have air conditioning and many windows aren t operational. They will spend more time outdoors to deal with the heat. Outdoor furniture of any kind is always welcomed for these times. We also help our neighbors by providing things that they cannot buy with food stamps such as paper products, toiletries, feminine products, cleaning supplies and laundry products. As the weather heats up we will be looking for warm weather clothing and shoes. I want to say thank you again to everyone for helping us ensure that every one of our neighbors had blankets, warm coats & gloves, socks & shoes and other winter necessities. Our church family is awesome! Cathi - 2 -

5 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY NOTES It was wonderful to experience the season of Lent Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus and celebrating Easter together! The children participating in SPARK each Wednesday evening walked with Jesus to the River Jordan, Capernaum, Samaria, the Sea of Galilee, and Jerusalem. Music, crafts, drama and puppets brought the Bible stories of Jesus baptism, miracles, and Holy Week to life. Our youth followed in these same footsteps on Sunday evenings, as they gathered for meals they prepared themselves ( Larry made fantastic chicken noodle soup, Cody created Un-sloppy Joes, and Andrew served the famous Wilson pepperoni rolls! Delicious!), watched the DVD of actual sites where Jesus walked, read the scriptures, discussed the Bible stories, and prayed together. Special activities included mask-making for the Masquerade Ball to Fight Friederich s Ataxia and attending the Ball (They had a blast! Thanks to all who helped make this possible AND supported a very worthy cause!), walking or riding in the Mid-Ohio Valley Easter Parade in Parkersburg, and helping the Easter Bunny hide eggs for the children s egg hunt at the parsonage. I am proud of our fine group of youth and encourage others who are in middle school or high school to join us on Sunday evenings at 6:30 P.M. in the Youth Room upstairs in the CFC. SPARK - for children ages 4 years old thru 5th Grade - continues on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 P.M. in the church building. Nursery care is provided for children 3 years old and younger. Parents - Please bring your children and plan to join the adults and Pastor Jim for Bible study in the sanctuary. YOUTH GROUP - for middle school and high school students - meets on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:00 P.M. in the Youth Room upstairs in the CFC. Sheila Mays has been practicing special music with the children and teaching them to play the melody bells during SPARK on Wednesday evenings (Ages 4 years old thru 5th Grade) and during Children s Church each Sunday (Preschool thru 2nd Grade children). Valma and Mark Adams have also been practicing special music with the older elementary children (3rd - 5th Grade) during Sunday School each week. Both groups will be providing special music on Mother s Day (May 11th) and Father s Day ( June 15th). Please encourage your children to participate and help prepare them to share in this special time during worship. They are such a blessing! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS COMING!!! Mark your calendars for July 13th - 18th (6:00-8:30 P.M.) Classes will be available for all ages! Make plans to join us each evening, as we celebrate God s creation and the many gifts He has give us, at WORKSHOP OF WONDERS! OTHER SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH District Church Camp at Cross Roads Church Camp - This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy learning about Jesus and worshiping God in a natural setting - not too far from home! Spring Heights Summer Camp - Our beautiful conference camp is located not very far away...in Spencer, WV. A variety of Christian camping experiences are available for all ages. Please take a look online at this beautiful camp or pick up a brochure for more information. Summer Youth Celebration (for middle school and high school youth) June 23rd - 27th at West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, WV. This is sponsored by our West Virginia Annual Conference Council on Youth Ministries and is the annual gathering of youth from around our conference. It is a mountain-top worship and learning experience! Don t miss it! Additional information and registration forms for camps and SYC are available NOW on the counter in the Gathering Area. Please pick these up and return them to the church office with your registration as soon as possible! As school comes to an end and spring sports and vacations begin, please make time to gather with your church family...to worship and share His special love! Jennifer Plyburn
