3 Animal Blessing The annual blessing of animals, live and stuffed, will take place on Saturday, October 6 at 12 Noon on St. Paul s front steps. It usually takes about fifteen minutes. Please tell your friends and neighbors they are invited even if their pet is not a Catholic. Thank you! Parish Shirts and Hats for sale Beginning the weekend of August 4th there will be 175th Anniversary shirts and hats for sale at $10 each. They can be purchased after Mass. Ad Book So far we have $10,000 in ads for our 175 th Gala Ad book. The ads come from local businesses and those far away but want to support the parish. The Committee of five have done a wonderful job getting them. Secondly, they are coordinating the Ads and getting them ready for print. Also, we have a $1,000 in personal Ads where parishioners donate, $50, $35, and $25 to print their name in the personal contribution section. Thank you! Gala Tickets The sale of Gala tickets have doubled since last week. Thanks for your generous response. Anniversary Mass If anyone wishes to be on the Anniversary Mass Committee, please come to a meeting on Monday, September 17 th at 7 PM in the rectory. All are invited. Rosary for Healing On Sunday night, October 7 th at 7 PM in St Paul Church, there will be rosary, benediction and the sacrament of anointing. There will be five decades of the rosary, each said by a parishioner. Each decade will be dedicated to a particular need for healing. At this time I would like to list five particular needs that the five decades should be dedicated to. Please return this decade need paper next week in the collection basket. Rosary Prayers: 1) Decade one need 2) Decade two need 3) Decade three need 4) Decade four need 5) Decade five need School Bag Blessing The annual blessing of the School Bags, will take place on Sunday, October 7 at the 12 Noon Mass at St. Paul s Tree of Life Recently, you received a letter from the parish about putting names on the Tree of Life that will be in St. Paul and St Mary Churches. There are five categories, dove, acorn, gold leaf, silver leaf and bronze leaf. The purpose of the letter was threefold: 1) The committee wanted to acknowledge the contributions by members of the parish who have already given. This way your name or the name of someone you love can be put on one of the categories of this tree. We are not asking you to give any more money. 2) However, if you wish to get into a higher category or if you wish to have more names on the tree of life you may contribute more. 3) It was a way to give an incentive to those parishioners who have not contributed yet to make a substantial one like you already have. Capital Campaign Local Business Meeting On Tuesday, business leaders from the Ninth Street Villa, the Spice Shop, the Chocolate Shop(by phone) and the Visitor Center and the Anastasia s Fish Market met at the rectory to discuss how they could insure the future of St. Paul and also how the St. Paul Parishioners could help their business. Members of the Capital Campaign spoke about what we are doing now to insure our future. Both were parents who have young children going to Mass with them. One of the members prepared an unbelievable spread of food for the guests and decorated the room to make it feel very warm. I mentioned that a number of visitors come to the Ninth Street Market and then go to St. Paul or St. Mary for Mass. Some have even permanently joined the parish. Also, when parishioners leave Mass they go to the Market for brunch or to buy food. Both places work together. I also pointed out that just as the parish competes with indifference of people toward religion and those who have left because of scandals, so the Market competes with many new local restaurants and new fruit and vegetable places in the area. Next, I said that one of the criticisms of the Church is that it talks about money. However, forty per cent of the Gospels are about money and the shady people who try to make money off of others. Finally, I pointed out that all of them have taken ads out in our Ad book for the 175 th anniversary and we are grateful to them.

4 Anonymity Recently, there was much controversy about an anonymous letter sent to the New York Times by an anonymous insider of the President s Administration. There is now an investigation of which insider was responsible for that editorial as well as a guessing game by political talking heads on TV. I know of many priests, including myself, who have been targets/ victims of anonymous letters. In my first year at St. Paul I received a flood of them. They attacked my character, my mental and emotional status and integrity as a priest. People could attack me without being held accountable for what they wrote. This is gutless and disingenuous. Accordingly to the letters there was a group in the parish who wanted to let me know what they thought but felt uncomfortable putting their names on the letter. Does uncomfortable mean having no grit in the fabric of their personalities? These people probably were not from South Philadelphia or from the parish because I have always found our parishioners very frank and up front with me. I remember reading an attack on the Pope in which the writer said that many bishops have told him they are afraid to speak their minds for fear the Pope will retaliate. That does not say much about the integrity of Bishops who are afraid to say what they believe. Sometimes newspaper reporters will say this article is based on anonymous sources. How do you know the journalist is not making up the story since the sources cannot be checked? My advice is this. When someone comes up to you and says there are people who think this or that about you. Ask them to give you their names and that you will contact each and every one of them. Usually, their response is I can t do that. When people say that, you say, the reason you cannot is because these people do not exist and you are making it up. They will reply, I am not making it up. Then if you are not, why are you afraid to tell me their names? I would like to talk to them. At least Jesus knew who would betray him but he was God and knew all things. We can only attempt to make anonymous people feel comfortable enough inside their own skin so they can come out of the shadows and become real again. You always knew what was on Jesus mind and he did not pretend to be somebody that he was not. All these great entertainers will be backed by the legendary City Rhythm Orchestra and the vocal sounds of Steve Ritrovato. There will also be a performance by the Vivaci Dancers.
