1 Westerville, Ohio The Voice of grace August 2012 Evangelical Lutheran Church Sunday School Rally Day - August 26 - Rally Day - August 26 - Rally Day Plans for Rally Day have not been finalized at this time, but we do know that it is on August 26. We can also say that it will include spending time getting to know one another through games and activities. Rally day is a good time for children to dress more casually. Parents, please watch for upcoming information through the Sunday bulletins and the website. An extensive look at the upcoming Sunday School Program for will be featured in the September VOICE. August 26 Call Committee Begins Process of Calling Associate Lisa Kuhar Selected as Chair As was reported several times over the past month, representatives from the Mutual Ministry Team and from the Personnel Committee engaged Church Council in a very thoughtful and well organized dialog. We Lisa Kuhar, Call Committee Chair discussed the vision and mission statements of Grace and how we can continue to be faithful to those statements. These two ministries proposed that the best way to move our mission forward to implement some of the goals of the strategic planning sessions last year is to begin the process of calling an associate pastor. Church Council agreed and unanimously voted to proceed with the call process. On Monday July 16th the call committee, which consists of: Lisa Kuhar-Chair, Sue Monroe, Erin Bopp, Molly Oakleaf, Amy Quinn, John Hicks, Larry Beckwith, and Tom Seamon met with Pastor Suzanne Dillahunt, assistant to the Bishop of the Southern Ohio Synod. Pastor Dillahunt outlined the process of calling an associate pastor to Grace. We have filled out the Synod required congregational profile, and the position is now posted on the Southern Ohio Synod website. It has been two years since we have had an associate pastor at Grace and all involved believe this step is important to support our many ministries. An associate pastor will facilitate, instruct and advocate for our ministries, especially for our Youth and Family ministry and other teaching ministries. An associate pastor will also allow Pastor Will to focus on his role of leading Grace. I am confident each of you share in our excitement about the more than 60 ministries we are blessed to enjoy and support within and beyond Grace. I invite you to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we proceed to call an Associate Pastor to be with us in the mission that God entrusts into our hands. With you in service, Bill Kulju, Council President

2 My Time To Look Up Over my years as a pastor I stood by many a hospital bed to pray, encourage, support, read Scripture and take the presence of Christ to the one in bed. It is both a privilege and humbling experience to be with a patient who is very ill and with family members who wait. There are many kinds of illness but today I am remembering those first open heart surgeries back in the 1970 s. The small county hospital in Northern Michigan where I was pastoring at the time was not equipped for such a surgery. Patients had to be transported down state to Saginaw or Petoskey where doctors had been trained for this radical new operation at the Cleveland Clinic. Then, days in the hospital s Intensive Care Unit followed. Recuperation was a long process. For me, the thing about hospital visits was that I was the one standing by the sick bed looking down. I would say things like, Be patient. Follow the doctor s orders. Remember that Jesus is with you. The church has you in our prayers. After a word from Scripture and prayer I was on my way. Then, walking through the hospital corridors to the lobby and on to the parking lot I would get in the car and move on with the day s agenda. I was always empathetic and at the same time was free to move on alternating between work and leisure, rest and activity, church and family responsibilities. It is a different thing to be the one looking down at the person in bed. To be honest thoughts went through my mind. I hope I never have to be on a respirator. I hope I never have to be tethered to life support mechanisms. Thank God I enjoy good health! Now, that has changed. On June 8, 2012 I suddenly experienced shortness of breath. I went to the hospital emergency room. Tests began. The symptoms worsened. There was no diagnosis. It was scary! Then, on June 12, it was discovered that the mitral valve in my heart had ruptured and had to be repaired...quickly! My lungs were filled with fluid. The order was surgery...now! From that point I remember nothing for the next couple of days. My kids came into town. Pastors visited. My brother drove to Columbus. My wife stood by. I remember nothing. It was later that the surgeon said to me, You were one I am convinced that the prayers of many have helped. The cards, some with words of Scripture, some with encouraging thoughts, some with hand-written notes, some that are funny and make me laugh have been so helpful. -Pastor Walston sick puppy. It was later that family members informed me how those days played out. It brought tears to my eyes. Then it dawned on me. Now I m the one in the bed. I m the one looking up while doctors and nurses and technicians and family members and pastors look down at me. Now I, Mr. Independent, am dependent on others. I want to get out of bed and return to the person I was before June 8, but I can t. Now I am the one hearing the words I had said so often to others. Just be patient. Give yourself time to heal. Do what the doctor tells you. Don t be in a hurry to go home. Now prayers were being said for me. Now I m the one having to have blood drawn at 4:00a.m. and a blood pressure cuff squeezing my arm every hour and wires stuck to my chest. Now I m the one reaching for the teddy bear when I have to cough Pastor Richard Walston because it hurts. Now I m the one taking pills and eating food that doesn t taste the way it used to. Now I am the one on my back looking up from the bed instead of the one looking down from the position I have long held. But... I am learning that looking up is a good thing. What the doctors say and what friends and family tell me appears to be coming true. You will get better. You are getting better. I ll admit in these last few days I can feel it. I am convinced that the prayers of many have helped. The cards, some with words of Scripture, some with encouraging thoughts, some with hand-written notes, some that are funny and make me laugh have been so helpful. Phone calls and visits have come from family and friends and lots of support, lots of support from Pastor Will and the Grace family in Westerville. Thank you. Thank you! I know that many of you have known serious illness. You have been the one looking up from a bed. You know, as do I, what that feels like. But may we, in all circumstances, always look up as did the Psalmist when he wrote, I lift my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord... 4 The AMAZING Women of GRACE The Background - Sometime in the late 1960 s - no one seems to really know the exact date - Grace began a ministry to provide a monthly meal to the residents of Faith Mission in Columbus. The meal was prepared by a group of Grace women and delivered to the Mission location on Long Street and served there by several Grace men and women. Some of the Grace folks involved at that time were Darolyn Hanley, Roberta Bertelsen, Millie Becker, Peggy and Dick Retherford, Cathy Burroughs and John Smith. At that time the Long St. location served the men in one room and the women and families in another. They also had an inebriated unit in the same building that required the volunteers to make plates and deliver. Today s Mission - Today, under the operation of Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio, Faith Mission has services and programs offered at the following Columbus locations:* Nancy s Place-325 E. Long St. serves women daily Faith Mission on 8th Avenue -599 E. 8th Avenue, serves up to 110 men each night. The Faith Mission Resource Center at 315 E. Long St. where clients are given assistance in finding employment, learning computer skills and resume writing. The Clinic at Faith Mission, also 315 E. Long St., provides medical, dental and vision care to homeless persons The men s shelter -151 N. Sixth Street serves 110 each night (up to 134 during winter overflow months). Triple Delight - The men s shelter is where this story of our Amazing Women of Grace begins. Twelve times a year, beginning at 11:00 a.m. the second Wednesday of every month, 15 to 20 women gather in the Grace kitchen and begin cleaning and dicing 40 lbs. of potatoes, slicing 30 lbs of hams and turkey hams, and spreading butter and garlic on 15 loaves of Italian bread. They combine the potatoes, hams and 4 large cans of green beans (ergo Triple Delight - an old camp recipe) into 4 roasters, and by 12:15 they are cleaning up and getting ready to go to lunch. This activity follows the Women s 10:00 a.m. Bible Study. The rest of the food, 4 large cans of apple sauce, the bread, paper products and loads of cookies, are packed up ready for pickup at 5:30 p.m. by those volunteers who deliver and serve the food to the 100 to 150 men at the men s shelter at 151 N. Sixth St. (Note: Triple Delight has always been the Faith Mission meal except the summer months for several years when the young people of Grace prepared and served sloppy joes.) During our renovation, the women traveled to Living Word Church in Galena and prepared Triple Delight there. The Faith Mission Meal preparation takes place the second Wednesday of every month. It is one of the numerous ways that Grace serves our Lord through community outreach. Reaching out with the love of Jesus to serve our community The Wreck - You may remember the train wreck and fire early Wednesday morning, July 11th. The Faith Mission at 599 E. 8th Ave. had to be evacuated. As the Grace women were getting ready to prepare the meal at 10:00 a.m. Kathy Snead received a call from the mission downtown explaining the evacuation and that those men were being sent to the downtown site. (Interestingly, the women had decided a week earlier that they would begin preparing the mission meal at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m. because they planned lunch at Bun s in Delaware) The evacuation meant that instead of the 100 to 150 that usually eat at the shelter, there would be 200 to 300 men to feed. The Action - Undetered, the Amazing Women of Grace bought more food, unpacked three more roasters, and went to work as usual. There was a brief discussion as to whether an easier meal should be considered. Brief because Triple Delight is what they do, and do so well. Without delay or complaint, the extra meals were prepared and packed. By the usual time, 12:15, they were off to Bun s. The Result - The men of the mission, plus about 100 more from the 8th Ave location enjoyed the meal prepared by the women of Grace. It took an extra vehicle to deliver the meal, which Larry Cepek gladly provided, and it took a little longer to serve. But thanks to our dedicated selfless women, all s well that ends well. Our Amazing women of Grace are just that - AMAZ- ING! Heartfelt thanks - expressed numerous times to us by the staff and men of Faith Mission - goes to everyone of you. You are very much appreciated. These Faith Mission Faithful include Kitchen Krew Head Roberta Bertelsen, Jeanice Alexander, Patti Barb, Eloise Collier, Phyllis Drakulich, Joanne Figge, Rachel Gangestad, Carolyn Gibboney, Nancy Kleberg, Verna Kreachbaum, Rosemarie Litzinger, Juanita Martin, Jill Morrison, Barb Moser, Tricia Patterson, Linda Reasoner, Linda Seamon, Grace Sima, Joyce Strung, Karen Vann and Arlene Warbritton.
