the ECWO ECHO My grandmother took me to church on Sunday all day long, every Sunday into the night. Then Monday evening was the missionary meeting. Tuesday evening was usher board meeting. Wednesday evening was prayer meeting. Thursday evening was visit the sick. Friday evening was choir practice. I mean, and at all those gatherings, we sang. - Maya Angelou Life takes on a certain rhythm. Each households develops a daily routine, mixed with some weekly and monthly commitments. From an early age we learn to value and rely on some consistency in our day. Learning to recognize patterns and predict what comes next is an early concept in education too. Building sacred time into your routine can make it easier to commune with God. Sacred space is almost always easier to recognize and preserve. As we enter a church, synagogue or mosque often the architecture helps indicate what areas are most sacred. Many feel uncomfortable approaching an altar, or stepping behind it. Sacred time is just as important to safeguard, but often more difficult to identify. Sabbath is perhaps the most obvious example of sacred time. Our 24/7 culture has created some challenges to preserving the Sabbath. Even those who are not required to work on Sunday, often have other expectations on their time. We must be diligent to create time that is sacred; time set aside for God. The annual observance of Lent helps us to consider our lives and our spiritual disciplines. As we examine that relationship, perhaps we can consider how we create sacred time. First, our daily routine. What do we do daily to connect with God? Prayers at mealtimes can be a simple practice of gratitude. Prayer and scripture, when employed daily help to form who we are. Daily prayer and scripture disciplines don t have to be complex, choosing something attainable is most important. Next, our weekly routine. How do you honor the commandment for Sabbath? Is there an entire day dedicated to God in your week? Setting aside work can be difficult, but it reminds us of our freedom too. Setting aside a day for God is a reminder of our freedom, whether it be from Pharaoh or the internet. Defining Sabbath is a conversation that has been ongoing for thousands of years, so our own understanding may be a work-in-progress too. Striving for a deeper commitment here year after year is helpful. While we may also have monthly disciplines. I prefer to consider seasonal disciplines from here. Just as we have spring-cleaning and New Year s Resolutions the church calendar can serve as a regular reminder to review our spiritual lives and commitments. Lent is a time for us to consider our discipleship and how we can develop deeper connections with God. It is a time to prepare our hearts, souls and mind for the ultimate celebration in Easter. Each season and annual celebration holds sacred time for us to observe. As the weeks, months, and years unfold the repetition of sacred time can create a deeper understanding and abiding faith, if we are mindful of it. We must each work to create, honor, and preserve sacred time. This time has a cumulative effect far greater than the moments it represents. The toll of ignoring this need is hard to measure, but is certainly damaging. My hope and prayer is that we will use this season of Lent to consider the sacred time in our own lives and the covenant we have with God. Blessings, Fr. Mahalo to St. Tim's for hosting and Deacon Steve for providing his wonderful cooking for the event. The event was attended by members of St. Elizabeth PIM and St. Philips PIM, and others from the Diocese, Region, and community. Dr. Antonio Oposa a well known Climate Crisis advocate was on hand to give a strong message of the lifestyle changes that are needed by all. Dr. Travis Idol spoke on the important role of the Church to make this issue a moral and spiritual issue. And Dr. Steve Montgomery reported on what churches are doing in Hawaii and the world. Professor Willis Moore gave a great overview of the Pacific, and was a strong advocate for attending the upcoming National Episcopal Convention in Utah this summer with a Pacific Climate Crisis advocacy team and booth. Fr. Paul Klitzke and the Bishop are encouraging congregations to begin discussing and developing local and joint responses to this issue. There are many resources available, contact Fr. Kaleo Patterson for more information at kaleop@me.com or Kaleo Patterson Pacific Peace Forum Climate Change Series MEMORIAL WALK AND SOLUTIONS This is the second Memorial Walk and Solutions Meeting co-sponsored by the ECWO and Hawaii Bicycle League. These events are planned wherever a person who walks or rides a bike is killed on the roads or streets of Oahu. Last year there were a total of 25 deaths. This year so far we have 6. If you are interested in helping, the next event will be on March 31st, with details coming soon. Father Paul, Father Kaleo, Deacon Steve, and Dr. Haaheo Guanson coordinated and attended this second event which took place in Makakilo, for a young woman named Sarah Stanislawski.
P A G E 3 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 3 Go Where Your Gifts Are; You Will Find God There from Dot Shigemura Spirit given gifts are special abilities that God gives to every Christian to be used cooperatively for the strengthening of the Body of Christ so that it might better fulfill God's purposes. Throughout the Bible we can see that God gives different people different gifts to accomplish God s purposes. Beginning with Abraham and Sarah, where would we be today without their gift of Faith, David s gift of Creativity, Solomon s gift of Wisdom, Dorcas gift of Mercy, Paul s gift of Multiculturalism, and so on? And so it continues today that God s Spirit gifts each of us differently so that the Body of Christ is strengthened to better fulfill God s purposes. Each congregation needs Leaders who are supported by Vision, Wisdom, Knowledge, Organization, Teaching, Discernment, Giving, Service and Assisting so that the work of Justice, Mercy, Healing, Evangelism, Prayer, Multiculturalism and Mentoring can be done with Craft, Creativity, Encouragement, Faith and Hospitality. Spirit Given Gifts 2004, 2006, 2008 David Ewart, Are you struggling to feel God in your own life? Maybe you haven t discovered your true spirit-given gifts the ones He has given us that He wants us to use for His purposes. Go where your gifts are you will find God there. A spirit-given gift survey is posted online at the home page. Click on the link to take the survey electronically (it even tabulates your response, and along with giving you the score for each gift, it averages your gifts across four key areas of faith, hands-on, leadership and nurturing). your results to info@ecwo.org, and read up on each of your gifts in the Spirit Given gifts description booklet also found at the link on the ECWO home page. Continue to explore your gifts by talking to others who know you well to see how your results tie with their view of your gifts. Continue to explore gifts that have been unused, the difference in a skill and a spirit-given gift, and the differences between related gifts. Together, let us all continue on our paths of our spirit-given gifts so that we may walk more closely with our Lord and Saviour. On Spiritual Gifts from Kahu Kaleo Patterson In the days of old when we did a component on spiritual gifts we used the acronym DDU ( almost looks like DUI - ha). But D-D-U was used to advocate the need for every Christian to: 1. Discover: We all have spiritual gifts... Which in many cases lay dormant and undeveloped. May not be the same as talents or skills we may have. 2. Develop: As we discover our spiritual gifts, through prayer and tarrying, they have to be developed, through faith, study and training. 3. Utilize: the gifts are meant to be used, and they develop as they are used in the service of others for the glory of God, for the edification of the body of believers, or the witnessing and outreach in God's love.
V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 3 Celebrating Queen Lili uokalani P A G E 4 The Iolani Guild, in conjunction with Mrs. Dawn Ige, hosted a celebration of Queen Lili uokalani's life with a reception at Washington Place in January. The guild hosted the evening as a way for the attendees to learn more about the life of the Queen. Clergy and various dignitaries were invited. Washington place is where Queen Lili uokalani was arrested during the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. It later became the official residence of the Governor of Hawaii. Yelp For Church! Yelp it is a common response to the question: What do you know about..? Yelp s purpose is to connect people with great local businesses ( Yelp was founded 10 years ago as an electronic way for people to quickly find great (or not so great) restaurants, doctors, services, and yes, even churches by reading the reviews of folks who have utilized those companies. A great review on Yelp can make a huge difference to your company. A poor review well, ask anyone who uses Yelp to find a good restaurant those 1 or 2 star reviews can save you the hassle of going to a restaurant that has terrible service or food. And did you know you can yelp churches too? And that the largest age group on Yelp are those between the ages of 35 and 54? (expandedramblings.com; By the Numbers: 40 Amazing Yelp Statistics ). Help all those folks find YOUR church. Download the ap on your phone or tablet or go to yelp.com on a computer. Search for your church on Yelp and write a review about them. The more reviews each church has will give more credence to the average star rating and help the consumer make an informed choice (5 stars for a restaurant that only has 2 or 3 reviews is one thing; but 5 stars for a restaurant with 50, 100 or more reviews well that says something entirely different!). You may even find you have a penchant for reviewing and you most assuredly will find that you love the ability to look for great taco places near Wahiawa and have a list pop up of places you can head to for dinner tonight. Happy yelping!

V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 3 P A G E 6 Over 100 hungry people from the 4 ECWO churches met at Sumida Hall on February 17th, Shrove Tuesday, for another fantastic pancake supper. There were heaps of delicious pancakes in plain, banana, blueberry and pineapple flavors. These were paired with as much bacon, sausage, Spam or ham you could want. Many thanks go out to all those who cooked and supplied the meat items and cut fruit and deserts, but especially to St. Tim s chefs who worked tirelessly to keep the pancakes coming!
P A G E 7 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 3 Who was St. Stephen? St. Stephen was a Deacon in the early church at Jerusalem and is regarded as the first Christian martyr. He was one of seven deacons appointed and specially ordained by the Apostles to distribute food and charitable aid to the poor members of the community. Prior to this there had been much unhappiness among Hellenistic Jews (Greek speaking or Greek influenced) that their widows were being slighted in favor of Hebrews over the distribution of alms from the community s funds. Not much is known about Stephen s early life but it is assumed he was one of the Hellenistic Jews as the name Stephen is derived from the Greek Stephanos, meaning crown. Neither is it known how he came to be a Christian. It is said that he was a great orator, full of faith and the Holy Spirit and performed miracles among his people. But his teachings and signs of wonder began to arouse the members of non-hellenistic synagogues who challenged his teachings in a debate. Stephen bested these other synagogue leaders who were humiliated and angered. Enraged, they brought phony testimony against him and dragged him before the Sanhedrin, the supreme legal court of Jewish elders. They accused him of blasphemy and preaching against Moses and God, the Temple and the Mosaic Law. Stephen denounced his accusers calling them stiff-necked people who resist the Holy Spirit. Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. His words enraged the crowd who then took him to the appointed place where he was stoned to death. As he was being stoned he prayed that God would forgive his tormenters.
