1 the ECWO ECHO The Episcopal Church of West Oahu V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 4 A P R I L Social media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. Every time you post a photo, or update your status, you are contributing to your own digital footprint and personal brand. - Amy Jo Martin Social media... the phrase evokes an opinion from most anyone today. It s changed the way the world communicates, even though it barely existed a decade ago. There is some contention as to whether or not we are more connected than ever, given that at some gatherings a majority of individuals may seem more connected to their phone or other devices than the people around them. Like most things in life, moderation and balance remain essential in our consideration and use. While I do my best to set social media aside when I have the opportunity to gather face-to-face with real-live-people, I do appreciate the access to my many friends online. I know the realm of social media is still somewhat mysterious to some, so I thought I d outline what I ve enjoyed about each. Facebook: The behemoth. Facebook has far more users than any other social media. I know there are a few holdouts, some anti-conformists, some who are (perhaps rightfully) concerned about the sites Privacy Policy, and those without Internet access. Facebook offers a wide variety of engagement. Its vast user-list will allow you to connect with most anybody, friends and family, those you see regularly and those you haven t seen for years. I ve observed some friends getting back in touch through Facebook after decades apart. One can also follow interest groups. I like Facebook for a few key reasons. A quick scroll through will show me what some friends are up to, through text, pictures, or short videos. I can also search for a specific friend to see what they ve been up to, or send them a private message as well. Check-ins allow me to tell others where I am, what I m up to and whom I m with. All our churches are available for a check-in which is a gentle form of evangelism. Twitter. For a time it seemed as though Twitter and Facebook were competing entities. While I am sure there is some sense of rivalry, they are unique offerings. On Twitter you can choose to Follow friends, or interests, whose posts then show in your Feed. Certainly the following of friends is similar to the Facebook experience, but Twitter is more interest based. It is a bit more restrictive, limiting posts to 144 characters, altering how pictures show to condense the Feed view, etc. On the surface it feels less user friendly, however, those who stick with it often experience the advantages of these restrictions too. Instagram. It s recent growth has made Instagram a real contender in total users. Instagram mimics Twitter in the following of friends and interests alike. It offers a similar feed. Instagram is unique in that it is intended for a mobile platform, rather than laptops or desktop computers. All posts originate with a picture. You cannot post just text, not as far as I know anyway. Further, all photos are cropped to a square dimension. Filters that altar the look and feel of the photo can be applied easily, along with captions and tags of friends. I could continue... Snapchat, Yelp, Google+, etc. etc. but think I ll stop here for now. How do you use social media? Have you checked in at church lately? Get online, connect, share the Good News! Blessings Fr. Paul CLERGY CORNER Father Paul Klitzke

3 P A G E 3 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 4...and these are the days of Elijah FLASHMOB AND ICE CREAM TOO! SPIRITUAL GIFTS To discover the strengths of individuals and, therefore, the four West Oahu Episcopal Churches and our Region, a spiritual gifts survey was distributed at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner and for a few Sundays afterwards. That endeavor will be continued after Easter. If you have a survey to be tallied and/or turned in to the central recorder, please see Dot Shigemura at St. Nicholas or Vicki Millard at St. Timothy s. Pastor Kaleo or Deacon Steve can be the messengers from St. Phillip s and St. Stephen s, as they have staff meetings to come to at the regional office. For those who have not yet participated in the survey, please be receptive when you are handed one. Finding your spiritual gifts is not a psychological analysis or baring of secrets. You may be pleasantly surprised that you have the gift of Justice or Encouragement or Creativity. Wouldn t it be fun to find out?????

5 P A G E 5 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 4 HOLY WEEK PRAYER TIME For a number of years St. Timothy s has held an overnight prayer clock in Holy Week based on the Gospel of Matthew 26:40: So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray Jesus said this to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane after the Last Supper in the Upper Room. Our prayer time begins at the conclusion of Maundy Thursday service on April 2 and ends with the beginning of the noon Good Friday service which is 16 hours and overnight. The brave and hearty souls come at 1, 2 or 3 AM, but whatever time and duration (several hours?) works best with your schedule is fine. As many as wish can sign up for any given hour to create the unbroken prayer clock in the sanctuary at St. Timothy s. Daughters of the King will provide coffee, water and munchies. What do you do for an HOUR? You ll be surprised at how fast it goes if you have never done something like this before. Read the Easter stories in the New Testament of the Bible; the Prayer Book is also a great resource; or bring your Christian reading book. Just sit in the quiet of the presence of God. Try gathering up the Christmas greeting cards you received in December and pray for each friend or family after re-reading their message! An hour may not be enough. You are welcome to remain as long as you like. There are no rules, except that you come to the church at the hour you designate. This prayer time is individualized BY YOU because it is your Lenten gift to God in whatever form feels right. So, please sign up on the chart on the door of the church, beginning Sunday, March 22. We are called to be men and women of prayer. What better time than that night when we can say yes to Jesus request that we spend one hour with Him in prayer. Sponsored by St. Timothy s Daughters of the King Two Safeguarding God s Children training sessions have been scheduled for Oahu. Same day, same times, two locations. Sat, May 2, :30am to 1:00pm Location: Epiphany Trainer: Shana Valenzuela Max: 20 people Registration will close Thu, Apr 23 St. Stephen's will hold its annual lanai sale from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 25th. There will be lots of good used clothing for adults and children, knickknacks, housewares, toys, games, books, kids' bikes, items for the nursery, a few furnishings - lots of treasures to be found at very reasonable prices. All proceeds benefit St. Stephen's. Please come out and support us at 1679 California Ave., Wahiawa, HI and bring a friend! Sat, May 2, :30am to 1:00pm Location: St. Timothy s (Christ s Gathering Place) Trainer: Sarah Klitzke Max: 20 people Registration will close Thu, Apr 23
6 V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 4 MAKAHIKI from Kaleo Patterson P A G E 6 Makahiki is a culture based religious program embracing some of the old traditions and practices related to Makahiki, an annual harvest and planting festival and season of peace. Paahao or inmates meet weekly to study Hawaiian language, history, and chanting. The Makahiki Season begins with opening ceremonies in late November and closing ceremonies in late March. ECWO is developing this program as an outreach project to support the restorative justice of the incarcerated, but also makes available our clergy to assist with counseling and outreach during re-entry. Kahu Kaleo Patterson is the president of the Pacific Justice and Reconciliation Center which coordinates Makahiki and re-entry services, and is also the priest in charge of reentry services at St Philips in Waianae, and St. Stephen's in Wahiawa. Also assisting is Deacon Steve Costa, and Dr. Haaheo Guanson, and Lisa and Van Deveaux. Churches can support the project through donations to thrift shops for work clothing, or household items, or material and supplies used for the Makahiki ceremonies. For more information please contact: Dr. Haaheo Guanson (Makahiki Closing Ceremonies were held on March 31st at Halawa Community Correctiomal Center.)
