3 September 25, 2016 Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time / Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Page 3 A deep, personal and intimate encounter with Christ This is at the heart of Saint John Paul II s message of the New Evangelization. He invited and encouraged us to seek our Lord in prayer and in service. Isn t this something we all desire? So how can we meet and encounter our Risen Lord and converse with him, share with him, give to him and receive from him? Well, pretty much in everything, in every situation and in every person we can encounter our Lord if we remain open and available to his loving presence. Yes, even in what is unapparent to our senses, or in the most difficult of situations, and even in the people who most challenge us we can encounter Christ. Personally, I believe that the place we truly encounter our Lord is in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in which Jesus is really and truly present to us. I have come to believe and experience that one can never in this life be any closer to God than in the moment we receive Holy Communion, hence the name Holy Communion. We are united to Christ in a holy and mutual exchange of love. As much as I hunger and thirst for Holy Communion, it is Jesus in the Holy Eucharist that is hungering and thirsting for me; he hungers and thirsts to be in Holy Communion with each one of us. It is the moment of a deep, personal and encounter with Christ. He is loving us in the Eucharist. Ok, just in case you missed it; Jesus is loving us in the Eucharist! That is pretty profound and his love will continue to deepen and grow if we remain open and available to his gifts. Our Lord has inspire me to consider and contemplate seven gifts of the Eucharist. He gives us his grace, he blesses us, he spiritually heals what is hurting, he loves us personally and intimately, he showers us with his mercy, he grants us pardon, and gives us peace. Wow! Our Lord is pretty amazing May you have a Holy Communion. GOOD EXAMPLE A faithful Christian, illumined by the rays of grace like a crystal, ought to illumine his neighbor with the light of good example, through word and deed. Woe to the complacent Amos 6:1 There was a rich man and lying at his door was a poor man Luke 16:19-20 Lord, by the living standards of much of the world we in America have it pretty good. We may not consider ourselves rich but most are blessed with adequate resources to get along OK. Many are not. Regardless of the reason for their poverty, they are here among us. You didn t give a reason for Lazarus suffering. You identified his need and the rich man s indifference and complacency. I thank you, Lord, for the many blessings you have put in my care. And I believe you will also place before me opportunities to use those blessings to help alleviate the suffering of my brothers and sisters. Who will you bring to my door today? Lord, help me to make good decisions with sharing my time, my attention and my wealth. Aid me to respect the dignity of each person I meet. When I see a person suffering help me to see you. Gabriel (Strength of God) Raphael (Medicine of God) LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES The message found in today s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don t notice their suffering. God s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. A retreat for all widowed men and women on October 1st and 2nd, Joyful Again! is a nationally recognized retreat. It provides the widowed with support from others who understand the loss associated with the death of a spouse. Joyful Again! is a two-day retreat for widows and widowers who want to resolve the grief they feel inside and begin to live again after the death of their spouse. The retreat emphasizes self-help, personal growth skills, and personal spiritual practices that will enable the participant to take the healing journey. It is a group of 8-10 people who gather weekly to connect life and faith through reflection on the Scripture Readings for the upcoming Sunday liturgy. A facilitator leads the group in sharing their experiences of God s presence, hearing the Word of God for the following Sunday and then reflecting on how the message of the readings applies to their daily life. We have several groups at St. Mary s that are blessed with this weekly opportunity. Bereavement Support Group: The goal of a parish bereavement ministry is that no member of the faith community grieves alone. The outreach of our bereavement ministry is no less compassionate as it strives to be the loving comfort of God here and now to all those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. St. Mary s B.S.G. meets on the 3 rd Wednesday of each month at 2:00pm in the Pastoral Center. The next meeting will be on Wed., Oct 19th. Call Sandy D. at with your questions. Theology on Tap, a nationwide program allowing Catholic Young Adults to sit back in a relaxed environment, while learning about their faith is now active in Brevard County. The turnout has been amazing and has been growing at every meeting, with Young Adults from all around the county discussing topics ranging from current events to church history.
