Choose one of these classes to learn even more about the wonderful story of God's great love for us! This year we will all be studying the same thing from, "The Story". We are hoping that this will bring families together in some discussions with one another. Classes offered for adults at 9:30 AM:.. 1. Men s Class (Church Library) The men will be looking at the Bible study that goes with what we are reading in, "The Story". They will use video and discussion. 2. Women's Class (Counselor s Office waiting room) This class will be looking at 31 women of the Bible. We will see what we can learn from the great, and not so great, women in God's word. 3. The Story Class (Family Life Center) This class will be studying the material from the book we are reading. It will have a video each week and discussion questions. Prayer Request Updates We welcome your prayer requests to pray for your needs or the needs of others. Please remember to submit an update after two weeks so that we can pray more effectively, whether it be prayers of thanksgiving or to continue to pray as directed. Without these updates, the prayer request will be removed after two weeks as we will assume that these needs have been met. Pray for all people, asking God for what they need and being thankful to him. 1 Timothy 2:1 Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast St. Luke s Boy Scout Troop 12 is having a Pancake Breakfast, Saturday, October 22, from 7:30 11:30 am. They will be serving pancakes, sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee. Cost is $5 per person or $14 per family. Advance tickets are available in the church office (or purchase at the door). Veterans Day Save the date, November 6, 2016 and join us that Sunday afternoon as St. Luke s pays tribute to our veterans in honor of Veterans Day. There will be a luncheon followed by a full program of patriotic music and recitations. Our speaker will be from the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 military comfort dog ministry, and dogs will be present. We hope to open this program to our neighbors outside of St. Luke s. So, if you know any veterans or others who might be interested, please invite them. More information will be coming during the next few weeks. If you have questions, please contact Al Krodel or Dan and Shirley Anderson. 2
3 Serving Beyond the Rail The Chancel Guild is a traditional ministry working behind the scenes to assure the readiness, function and appropriateness of the altar, candles, paraments, and associated vessels, beyond the communion rail in the sanctuary. We consider it an honor to humbly serve our Lord by preparing His table for the serving of Holy Communion. In this preparation are many details and duties. We would love to have your help! And yes, we have men on our team! Please join us at our next meeting, Tuesday, October 11, 7:00 pm, in the Church Library. Any questions, please contact Connie at connie.pittman@stlcfamily.org or call x-115. OWLS October Luncheon The OWLS October luncheon will be Thursday, October 13 at 11:30 am. Brats and sauerkraut will be served at noon. Cost is $6.00 per person. OWLS (Older Wiser Loving Seniors) is fellowship for all people ages 60 + or younger if you want to! Please sign up on the OWLS board! Any questions call Barbara Murray at Food With Friends Thank you School Board for a taste of Oktoberfest with brats, German potato salad, sauerkraut and German chocolate cake. The only thing missing was Earl, Scott and John wearing their lederhosen. Small groups, Bible studies, men s mentoring, music, youth, school, OWLS, leadership, ushers, greeters, PALS or any other groups or individuals don t miss out on a chance to promote your ministry by hosting Food with Friends. There are four months still open. Sign up at the Information Desk in the Narthex of call Bruce Twedt at Food With Friends The Movie Night group invites you to the next Food With Friends on October 16, where they will serve STEAK & LOBSTER! Okay, that was the trick. Now for the treat: You will have a wonderful time socializing while enjoying some really tasty casseroles. Also, you ll get to participate in a contest for the chance to win a FABULOUS PRIZE! (Not a trick, maybe an exaggeration on the fabulous part!) Just bring a side dish or dessert to share and come prepared to have fun. Don t forget to sign up at the Information Desk! Join us for a Great Night Out! We have set up our very own screening through Tugg, and we need your support! Come join me at Kendall 10 Theaters in Oswego on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 starting at 6:30 p.m. for a movie screening of Worship Night in America - An Evening of Unity and Prayer for Our Country with Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Tasha Cobbs, Matt Maher, Phil Wickham, Kim Walker-Smith, Louie Giglio, Max Lucado and many more leading us in song and words to find hope in uncertain times! Join us! Only a few more days remain for us to make sure our local event happens! Can you help us right now by inviting your friends, family, colleagues, and church group to get tickets? If we don't hit the required tickets we cannot make the event happen at Kendall 10. Right now, our event is still below the goal. We can do this! As of October 4, we only need to sell 34 more tickets to bring this awesome experience to our area! Thanks to those who have already purchased their tickets. However, without at least these 34 tickets being sold by October 18 (LESS than 2 weeks away), we won't be able to participate with tens of thousands in this nationwide event! Get your tickets here before Tuesday, October 18, at 6:30 p.m: -in-america-an-evening-of-unity-and-prayer-for-our-country-7gdg. $12.00 for a single ticket and, better yet, $15.99 for both a ticket and Chris Tomlin's new album, "Never Lose Sight," (either the CD or a Digital Download)! See you there! Marj Zgrabik Advent Suppers Need Hosts! This year we have four Wednesday night Advent Worship Services and Suppers. We currently have two hosts. Open dates are December 14 and December 21. Please contact the church office and reserve your date! 3
4 Coming Soon! Beginning in January, 2017, we will have a new offering envelope system. Instead of a single booklet for the whole year, you will receive your envelopes in the mail every two months. The first set (January-February) will arrive in December. With the new system, the Church Office will not have to order enough packets for the whole year actually having to order more than we think we will need and then throwing away a bunch at the end of the year. The mailing list is updated for every order just the number needed. People who transfer out early in the year won t have to dispose of a year s envelopes; people who join late in the year won t receive a bunch of obsolete ones. The bi-monthly mailing also serves as a gentle reminder to infrequent givers of the importance of returning offerings to the Lord, and supporting the ministries of their church. As a result, churches who use this system often see an increase in offerings. People who contribute electronically can opt out of the system by calling or ing Connie Pittman in the Church Office (connie.pittman@stlcfamily.org, ext. 115) by November 11. For those who give electronically but still wish to participate in the offering in worship, there will be a check-off box on the envelopes that says I give electronically. Watch the mail in early December for your first set! Every child in our church and school who wants to get involved will have the chance to pack a box and leave a personal note and picture for another child to open. This is an awesome chance to tell of Jesus love to those who don t know him! Last year we sent 66 boxes, plus some families filled and sent their own. This year, the goal will be to sent at least 75! But there is a great need for gifts and/or money to be donated for these boxes. Please stop by the table in the Narthex to see what is needed to fill these boxes. And watch as we track the number of items received. If everyone helps, we can reach our goal for Christ! MEMORIAL OF THE SAINTS On the weekend of November 5 & 6, we will remember all those who have passed away in our congregation, family, and very close friends in the last year, as we celebrate All Saints Day. If a family member, or very close friend has passed away since we last celebrated this event on October 31 & November 1, 2015, please complete the form below and give the following information in clearly legible form to the church secretary by Monday, October 31, Please include the person s full name, their date of death, their date of birth, and their relationship to you. 7 Then he said, Here am I, I have come to do your will. Hebrews 10:9 October 7, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians, In the universe the Bible says there is order. (1 Peter 2:13,14) We see it every day in our jobs - workers, bosses, owners, etc. We also see it in government - presidents, congress, citizens, etc. There is order in our families, too. Even in heaven there are different ranks of heavenly beings. When we have a need, we go to the first level of authority and progress from there. But in our relationship to God, we go to the highest first. When we have needs, prayer to God is first. This is why Christians have the peace and joy in there hearts that those who do not know Him cannot understand in difficult times. Raising your child to trust in God is giving your child a gift of a constant and eternal authority that can be there for them. When asked what we should do when there is a bad storm, our students respond with, Pray to God. They also know that God provides help in this world. For a small child, a teenager, or an adult this is very comforting. Last night, as I sat at our Internet Safety presentation from Deputy Lawson of the Kendall County Police, I realized another reason that God has put our school here. Regardless of where our families are from as far as church affiliation - our church, other churches, no church connection, we are able to strengthen our student s trust in God that will lead them to rely on Him in difficulty throughout their lives; always remembering that God strengthens our faith through trials and perseverance. Of course, we should not neglect to give thanks for blessings of family, food and housing, freedom to worship, and a thousand other blessings that we take for granted. I very hardily commend all our parents to the spiritual insight and effort to send their children to a Christian school. Walking with God, Linda King, Principal Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 7
8 Wayside Cross Ministries for October Thank you for the 20 toothpastes, 26 razors, 6 toothbrushes, 6 shampoos and 5 deodorants you donated to the men in the Master s Touch Ministry in September. The men need all of these toiletries. In October we will be collecting MEN S SOCKS. Please place your donations in the LWML box located outside the church secretary s office. (Heads up for November we will be collecting men s gloves and hats so watch for sales!). Thank you for the help you give us in supporting this Men s Ministry. We are so thankful for all of you and for your help. PADS Kendall County PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) starts its seventh season on October 22 at St. Luke s. Seven local churches serve as hosts for our homeless guests to provide a hot dinner, a safe place to sleep, breakfast and a bag lunch. St. Luke s is the Saturday night host from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am. Please consider volunteering for a 4-hour shift once a month to help those in need. The three shifts are: Shift 1 6:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Shift 2 11:00 p.m. - 3:00 a.m. Shift 3 3:00 a.m. - 7:15 a.m. Our greatest needs are Shift 2 and Shift 3. See Patti and Randy Carter or Lorie Len with any questions. There is also information on the Missions & Ministry Board located by the Church Secretary s office. THANK YOU to our past PADS helpers and volunteers! This very important ministry exists because of you. Each year before PADS starts we have a kickoff meeting. It's a nice refresher for our current volunteers and provides information to our new volunteers. Our kickoff meeting will be on October 6 at 6:30 pm in the gym. We will serve dinner and dessert. We will also have door prizes! Worship Doesn t Happen by Itself! Get out of the Pews and SERVE! We have a couple areas of worship servant ministries that are in desperate need of volunteers! Ushers Usher teams are needed for all services, but most critically at 5:30 & 10:45. We have 2 & 1/2 teams for 5:30, 5 for 8:00, and 4 for 10:45. The more teams we have, the less you need to serve. You come to church anyway, why not actively participate while you are here? Ushers provide a much needed service at each worship by handing out bulletins, collecting offering, providing direction during communion, and providing assistance to the lay servers and pastor. Please volunteer to usher by contacting Chuck Granholm at or contact the church office. Nursery Nursery volunteers are critically low. Currently we have only 4 nursery volunteers! And while we greatly appreciate them, they can not cover all three time slots every weekend! We have had to stop advertising that we provide a nursery until we can get enough volunteers to commit to caring for the little ones during 8:00 & 10:45 worship services, and the 9:30 Bible study hour. This is an important ministry to provide for the congregation. If you have children that could use the nursery, please volunteer to take a turn! Or set a great example for your teen and sign up as a team. It s a fun way to serve the Lord! We are also in need of a person who could take on the scheduling of the Nursery volunteers. This task is done just 4 times per year. Please contact Kim Fuelling at or Connie Pittman at x-115 with questions, or to volunteer.
