2 Sunday School and Adult Bible Studies SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 10:30 am BLAM! Building Lives Around Music We are using a new curriculum that will center around MUSIC! 1st grade through 4th grade will be the target group. 5th and 6th graders will be an important part of this program-both as participants and as facilitators. High schoolers will be the trainees. We will sing at least once a month during a church service. This curriculum will include a short small group bible study session related to the music being introduced. Parents are invited to attend!! We will be in the small gym (right off of the main gym) and will meet from 9:30 to 10:30 am! Pre-school and Kindergarten will continue with Julia Kothera in the preschool classroom just past the mailroom. For questions or sign-up, please contact Lisa Steinwart at steinwart@aol.com. ADULT BIBLE STUDY It's time for you to decide to learn more about your Lord and Savior! It's time to step out and take a deeper walk with God. Commit to coming to an adult class! See you there! 1. Men's Class (Church Library) - Is This the End? This is a 10 lesson study by Dr. David Jeremiah. Signs of God s providence in a disturbing new world. Led by Kevin Cuyler. 2. Adult Class (School Wing) - Hebrew: The Fulfillment of Faith - In Hebrews, God gives us hope and courage in our discipleship so that we will not grow weary and lose heart. He directs us to Jesus who for the joy set before Him endured the cross on our behalf. Led by Bob Toepper. 3. Adult Class (School Wing) - Lord, I Want to Know You - When the car won't start we call a mechanic. When the bathroom overflows we call a plumber. Yet, when we are in the midst of a spiritual struggle we often fail to call upon God's provision, comfort and strength. In this insightful study of God's names, learn how to call upon the names of God so that you can connect with your: Protector in times of vulnerability, Healer in times of illness, and Provider in times of financial drought. Learn how to call upon specific names of the Lord who can provide for your every need. Led by Jan Hoffman. Wayside Cross Ministry for January In January, we will be collecting TOOTHPASTE again. This is one of the items the men always have a need for. Please place your donations in the LWML box located outside the secretary's office. Many thanks to all of you for your support of the Master's Touch Ministry at Wayside. The men and LWML are very appreciative and we wish all of you a Happy and Blessed New Year. Fellowship Servants Sign up Time! The 2018 Coffee Hour schedule is now available on the Bulletin Board by the Church Office. If you currently serve as a Fellowship Servant, please sign up for the dates that you can. If you are looking for a way to serve, this is a good opportunity! You would just need to pick up donuts, make coffee, and set up for coffee hour a few times a year. I m not sure we can go without donuts and coffee on Sunday morning! Please contact Mary Ruch if you have any questions! Ladies Night Out The next Ladies Night Out will be Thursday, January 18. We will meet at Bristol Tap, on Cannonball Trail in Bristol, at 6:30 pm, or you can call for a ride. Any questions, contact Pat Freeman at , or Nancy McNeilly at St. Luke's Church, I d like to thank you for allowing me to leave a drop box to collect donations in for my Eagle project. Your help allowed my project to get done quickly and efficiently. The 25 troops that received the care packages are very grateful for the items. Sincerely, Tylor Kinley / Troop 12 2

If you are interested and/or need more information, please contact Pat Freeman at or gari319@aol.com. Or you can complete a sign-up form located in Pat s mailbox #11. And yes, we even have men on our team! Please join us at our next meeting, Tuesday, January 30, 6:30 pm, in the Church Library. Any questions, please contact Ronnie Bailey. 4
5 St. Luke s Christian Academy s PALS group is hosting it s 2nd Annual Auction/ Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, May 5 from 6-11 p.m. at Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville. The theme is A Night to Remember. There will be hors d oeuvres, a sit down dinner, dessert and open bar. There will also be a DJ and silent auction. Tickets are $75 per person. This is an adult s only night to have fun and support our school! Babysitting will be available at the school for a minimal fee. Last year you helped us raise over $8000 for the school! Everyone who attended the fundraiser last year had such a great time they asked us to do it again! You don t want to miss this event! Contact Tami at the school office and let her know you ll be attending! Principal King s Weekly Academy Update New Year greetings from your Academy! Returning to the school calendar means looking ahead to coming activities. National Lutheran Schools Week, VIP day, Winterim, the 7/8th grade Spring Trip, and our Spring Play. These are all in addition to curriculum business as usual. We invite you to get involved with these activities or with daily/weekly activities. We are still looking for $350 to send our teacher on the Spring trip, Friday lunch help, milk pick-up, and especially help for the PALS coming dinner/dance. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, fithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol. Galations 5:22 First Prayer and Healing Service of 2018 January often brings the reality of our human condition back to the forefront of our minds as we deal with physical ailments whether it be a cold, the flu, or other conditions that are longer in duration. For some the dark days bring sadness and feelings of loss and loneliness. We have a Prayer and Healing Service planned for Saturday, January 27 at the 5:30 pm service. We will have a team of prayer warriors that are willing to pray with you at the alter if you would like to come forward for anointing by Pastor or one of the Mentors. We would also be willing to come to you to pray if you prefer to remain in your pew. Jesus was born to give us Hope, Peace and Love. He is the Great Physician and welcomes you just as you are! 5
6 Greetings to you in this new year of hope and opportunity! The Northern Illinois District's New Starts...New Believers initiative has a new opportunity to share the love of Jesus in our Lutheran schools through the Invest in Kids Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Your scholarship donations to our Lutheran schools in Illinois can go up to four times as far, depending on your tax situation! This is a result of the Illinois General Assembly recently passing the Invest in Kids Act, which provides for the creation of a state tax credit scholarship program for private schools. If you donate $100, you may receive a credit of $75 against your Illinois tax liability when you file your 2018 Illinois income tax return. This new journey, created by the tax credit program, opens doors for students who may not have had the chance for a new start in their life. It gives opportunity and hope to not only our current students but many new children in our communities. The Invest in Kids Act has the potential to provide incredible new support for our school families, while providing donors with a 75 percent state income tax credit on donations made to the scholarship fund through a scholarship granting organization (SGO). This could be particularly appealing given recent changes to federal tax law which may limit the benefits of itemizing deductions such as charitable contributions. You can participate by following three steps. 1. Register - Donors need an account on mytax.illinois.gov before applying for a tax credit. 2. Reserve - Reserve your tax credit with Illinois Department of Revenue at mytax.illinois.gov. 3. Donate - Donations are made through our SGO partner Empower Illinois at EmpowerIllinois.org. Tax credit reservations opened on January 2, These credits are available on a first come, first served basis until all credits are claimed. At this time, there are still millions of dollars in credits available which can be claimed by donors wanting to support scholarships for our Northern Illinois District schools. And, individual donors may designate their donations to a specific qualified school. Read more about how you can share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our communities on our website at We are grateful for your support, helping to provide a quality Christian education to this generation of students who need to know about the love of Jesus. Success of this program in 2018 will have an impact on educational choices for low-income students for years to come. Mike Zimmer Mission Facilitator Schools Northern Illinois District LCMS 2301 S. Wolf Road Hillside, IL (Potential donors considering making a donation should consult a tax advisor before doing so, as individual circumstances could dictate the implications of their donation.) 6
