1 Volume 35, Issue 8 August 2018 CASTING THE VISION FROM YOUR DOM Last month I explored reasons for fasting. This month I want to look at some of the spiritual bene its of fasting. First of all, fasting leads to a greater intimacy with God. For those who really desire a more intimate relationship with the Father, prayer and fasting can provide that. Fasting is a decision to die to ourselves and our carnal desires in order to seek God s will for us. Though fasting can be challenging in many ways, it also ills us with joy as we are drawn closer to God in a more intimate walk, seeking the One who is also seeking us. Mark 2:20 reads But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. Jesus knew with the absence of His physical presence, the disciples would need to fast to maintain that deep intimacy. Though fasting involves temporary sacri ice and discomfort, eternal bene its are reaped, which makes it all worthwhile. Second, fasting can bring us spiritual clarity. Our culture and the pressures of this life can cause us to become insensitive to God s voice and apathetic to kingdom issues. We can fall right in with the world s way of thinking and acting and allow eternal matters to lose their signi icance. Romans 12:2 states, And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Praying and fasting will sharpen our spiritual discernment and allow us to gain deeper spiritual insight and wisdom. Third, fasting allows the Holy Spirit to set our hearts on ire for Him once again. Our hearts experience revival and are refreshed. We become bold intercessors for the lost, the hurting and the broken as we are made more aware of the needs of others and focus less on ourselves. We are empowered to become agents of change and zealous witnesses that seek to lead lost souls to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as Acts 1:8 and the Great Commission in Matthew 28 commands us to. Lastly, fasting and prayer can break Satanic strongholds. In Mark 9:29 we read of Jesus disciples being unable to deliver a young boy of an evil spirit. When they asked Jesus why they could not, he answered This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Believers have the ability to tap into the unlimited power of the Holy Spirit and receive His strength and might to combat opposition from the enemy. 2 Corinthians 10:4 states For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. God provides what we need to wage spiritual warfare and win. Fasting allows us to lay aside everything that may hinder us and provides a channel for Holy Spirit power to low into us to combat the enemy s opposition. Is fasting bene icial? Yes! And the eternal bene its reaped cannot be compared with the few challenges and discomforts we endure during the process. Jesus knows this and expects us to fast and pray. That s why He said when ye fast not if. (Matthew 6:16) My prayer for you is that you will experience the presence and power of God in a fresh and exciting way as you seek Him through prayer and fasting. Next month, we ll look at guidelines to fasting. Until then, I am here if you need me. God bless you. 3 Volume 35, Issue 8 Page 3 We are about to start a new school year, and we are making preparations to welcome students back to campus right now. I would like to invite you participate and partner with us in one of 4 ways. Please pray about which or all you would be willing to be a part of and then pass the word on. The 4 th Annual Coastal BCM Golf Tournament is approaching. On Friday, August 10 th we will hold our fundraising golf tournament to raise money for students. Money from this past year s tournament helped send students all over the world this summer and also provided scholarships for students to participate in retreats and events. We need golfers, sponsors, and donations. Will you rally the people in your church to get on board? David with any questions! We would love for you to participate in the annual CCU Prayer Drive on Tuesday evening, August 14 th at CCU. We will only be a little over an hour, but we will drive golf carts around campus and pray for students. Will you join us? Please contact David if you would like to sign up! We are seeking for churches that would be willing to provide a meal on a Tuesday night for BCM. Students love homecooked meals, and we feed students each Tuesday night, so we are currently signing churches up to adopt a Tuesday night this semester. If you don t have the resources or people to prepare a meal, you can sponsor a meal through a financial donation and we will BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRY UPDATE purchase the meal somewhere. Please consider adopting a Tuesday night and come fellowship with students! We are collecting specific items to help welcome new international students on campus at CCU. Ideally, we would love to collect enough to give every new international student on campus a bedding package the day they arrive, so they don t have to go to the store immediately. We are collecting the following new and gently used items: towels, twin XL and/or full size sheet sets, new pillows and pillowcases, and blankets. If you would like to be a partner in this project, please contact David. Thanks so much for your partnership, David Neace, BCM Director davidneace@hotmail.com

4 Page 4 CASTING THE VISION ALASKA MISSION TRIP REPORT Seward, Alaska changes you. Every year, from May to September, people from around the world descend upon a li le fishing village in Seward, Alaska. Likewise, boat captains and deckhands, from across the United States, join the mul tudes, in order make a living and take these visitors on an Alaskan fishing adventure. For this reason, Seward becomes one of the greatest places to share the love of Christ. Nowhere else can you reach so many people, from every loca on, in such a small area, with the love of Jesus Christ. That is exactly the purpose and mission of the Alaska Missions Team; to reach boat captains, their crews, and the dockworkers, and share the love that can only come from the God who truly loves them. From July 13 th through July 20 th of this year, Renee and I, with our Director of Missions, Tommy Richardson, joined the Alaskan Missions Team in Seward Alaska and had the pleasure of serving these captains and their crews, by feeding them, talking with them, caring for them, and in many cases, simply praying with them and for them. Someone once said, I would rather see a sermon than hear a sermon any day. The Alaskan Missions Team exemplifies and demonstrates the love of Christ by simply serving and caring for these hard working captains and crews, who work 12 to 14 hour days, on the open seas and through unpredictable weather. Fishermen can be a hard group of people to reach. However, when they know that you care about them and love them uncondi onally, they are more apt to see the love of Christ in you. Being new to the mission, Renee and I weren t sure how welcomed we would be. Rela onships and es had been grown over years with baby steps and small seeds being planted by the members of the Man Cave Ministries missions team. We knew these were people who worked hard and were focused and diligent with their tasks. A gentle balance was required. Writers are o en told show, don t tell. This was our goal. To show Christ in us, not tell them. To lead them along with drops of love in Christ, not overwhelm them with floods of eloquent words they had no me and o en no desire to decipher. Our worries were in vain. God laid the path for us to share our love for Christ. The fishing boat crews and dock workers were more than welcoming. They received us with open hearts and open arms. We developed new friendships. God allowed us to share the gospel and gave us a gi in return. Alaska, and the people there, brought us a new sense of belonging. Now more than ever before, we learned that no ma er how different we are, no ma er how far from Christ you may be, we are all God s children. His love is everlas ng and he wants us each and every one of his people to come home with Him one day. In fact, this year s trip resulted in two more children entering God s Kingdom. A er years of ministering, fruit was harvested when a former deckhand and his wife received Christ for salva on. As a result of our involvement in the Alaska Mission, Alaska will always be in our hearts, on our minds, and in our prayers. Anyone who denies that there is a God has only to look at the majes c snowcapped mountains, or listen to the rhythmic rush of streams, or catch the scent the wild flowers on the breeze that grow on the side of the road. The creator cannot be denied. Contributed by Denis & Renee McCorry

There are over 600 students here! We heard from Congressman Brian Mast from Florida (Army veteran that lost his legs in Afghanistan), South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, Dr. Bernice King (CEO, Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change), and many others are to come. Thank you for ALL your support! Back in June we took 16 students from 5 different churches to Camp Pinehill. There were over 60 kids at camp for the week. The kids had a great week learning about Jesus, singing, playing, swimming, ishing, and a bunch of other stuff. Oh, and by the way WE HAD 5 SALVATIONS AND TWO REDEDICATIONS JUST IN OUR GROUP!! It was AMAZING! We already have two churches going to youth camp the last week in July. I am praying for what will happen that week. We still have time to add more teens. Continue to pray for ALL the teens that ministry reaches out to. If you would like to sponsor a student for a trip or just donate to the ministry, please send checks to the association and put attention student ministries. Thanks!
